Everex XT5000T Support thread

Be sure and keep us updated on the temps - that's the 50's main problem (aside from the IRQ issue).
 
I don't use wireless so I always have wireless turned off so thats not an issue.

The temps are for idle cpu - 54C and gpu - 64C.

Would it help putting some artic silver on it?

If I switched to PCMCIA or USB networking, would that solve the IRQ issue?
 
these irq issues suck. worse than ever now with my new cpu, seems to have aggravated the issue. i may try vista to see if that makes it any better :(

i'm using the new intel abgn wireless card

Found a great deal for an almost new in box unit for $500 with an upgrade to 2 gigs of memory and a second 100gb hdd already installed and working.
Can't wait to tinker with the laptop and see what it can do.

I use Vista x64 on my XT, and it still dies often when using the WiFi. So crappy. I wish this could be fixed w/BIOS updates.

have you posted about this on the everex forums for this model?
Personally I don't like wireless for any computer I use I am a die hard network cable freak.

I have not posted on the Everex forums for this issue.

I do plug-in when using the XT at my desk, but in the living room, WiFi is better than stretching the 50 cable I keep around for (re)builds.

I'd go post the issue on their forums I am sure the company monitors the forums.

I just got my XT5000T in the mail today.
This is one sweet laptop.
Just did a clean install of the OEM Vista (I'm going to give it a chance before I put XP Pro on there) and installing all the important updates now..:D

Monitoring != responding. This is a known issue.

Still a great laptop though. :)

Glad you posted that the tweaksrus video drivers work a lot better than the OEM driver pack from Everex.
I was having problems at first then did a reformat and reinstall on round two I started tweaking the system.

With the help of this thread and the tweaks video drivers I now how this system in full force running windows xp pro 32 bit SP3 all updates.
Plays games great for me and no performance issues at all.

I'm at work right now on my new laptop :D
As for all the people having problems with the crapy design layout of the keyboard and scroll pad do what I did get a bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse problem doesn't exists for me :p

Now that I have all that done and I know how to configure the system for max performance ( By the way ntune works just fine in windows xp 32 bit) I'm going to take the next step.
Time to buy some better memory, 2x larger faster HDDs, crack open the case to see what I can do about modding for better cooling since I want to upgrade the cpu, and install a copy of Windows XP Pro 64bit edition. ;)
 
:confused: Hi all, before you all blast me with read the thread noob replies, I have gone through most of the thread and have googled it, but I'm having problems setting up my RMclock so it won't throttle.

I have, last year, sucessfully set up RMclock.. it was working fine, then I stopped gaming for a bit and then reformatted lappy, and now that I'm trying out RMclock 2.35 (and even 2.30).. my lappy randomly shuts down.

I installed the rmclock, then deselected that "enable OS power management integration (restart required)".. then I set up my 4x as 0.8V and 8X as 1.00V (to be safe).

Everything runs fine in the max performance profile, i check the monitoring page, the cpu is running steady at 8x 1.6ghz, the voltage is 8x at 1.0V..

Then maybe 1/2 hour later, whether i am gaming or not, i get the random shutdown(everything turns off suddenly, not vista shutdown).

Any help please?

EDIT: oh nevermind i found a post on the other everex site, seems the AMD dual core optimiser is incompatible with RMClock, played some crysis for an hour and its been an hour after that and still up and running.
 
Has anyone taken apart the case/housing for this laptop yet?
I'm going to do some mods I have planned for it after looking over the unit.
I see some issues with cooling I want to improve on.

The plastic casing doesn't look too problematic to remove.
Once I get the project started I'll post some pictures here.

For cooling someone over on the Everex forum wrapped the heat pipe with copper wire and claims great success. I haven't tried it but sounds logical. Maybe check it out.

For disassembly I copied this from someone (sorry can't give credits, wish I had a link)
Taking it apart

1) Remove all screws on the bottom cover of the laptop and store them on a piece of masking tape.

2) Remove the speaker cover on the top by popping it off and remove the screws underneath.

3) After taking off the speaker cover, the keyboard should be removable so take that out, careful not to rip the data cable and remove the screws.

4) Unscrew the moniter and be careful you don't ruin the pins when removing/installing.

5) Carefully remove all screws inside of the laptop including those on the motherboard, sound bridge, and DVD burner.

6) Carefully lift the motherboard up and the battery should be taped to the inside of your laptop case on the other side where the keyboard sat.
 
hey all, i have been wanting to post this for some time because i think there must be a way to fix the temp issues because my video card died (at least this is what i thought BUT Everex said something was corrupted which is BS) about two months ago and I sent it in under warranty.

well, when i got it back low and behold my temps were MUCH LOWER! so low i am still not sure they didn't change the video card to something other than the 7600GS.

when i took off the back cover i could see some bluish felt looking material that i don't believe used to be there. here's a pic...

...the red squares is where the blue feltish-looking material is. it's more than likely just a thick thermal pad of some sort but i don't remember seeing it there before. whatever they did helped as everything seems much cooler especially the air blowing out the side. i haven't loaded any games since they wiped my hard drive but i'm gonna put stalker back on and try crysis (i know, lol).

anyone else had their vidcard fail on them or (like Everex tried to suggest) have a corruption problem where upon booting up you get no video or hdd led activity?

on another note... does anyone know where i can get a guide to upgrading the cpu? i just got a TL-60 and wanted to pop'er in there.
 
I don't really care for Vista anyway, but I especially like XP for the Everex. Vista's video demands can easily drive the heat up, even when the candy is off. It is hard to compare numbers because so many people use XP on the Everex. Just a thought.

yeah, i would have switched long before now but i've used up all my xp oem keys and just haven't had a chance to run down a cheap one yet.

if anyone knows where i can grab one (home even) plmk... for a reasonable price that is.

Hey Syngen, check your optical out port and make sure it's working. I too got my system RMA'd and I went to connect my notebook to my home theatre system and the optical out port isn't working now. it worked perfectly prior to sending it in... used it often too after getting my mini toslink cable.

i didn't luck up on getting the 5300 as a replacement. although the RMA was very painless (hated they didn't pick up the "shipping to them" tab) they don't seem like the kind of company that gives out those kinds of upgrades no matter how inconvenienced the customer may have been.

i also just noticed that when they sent back my system my optical port no longer works when it worked great prior to them doing the repairs.

yes, i overclocked my vidcard like an idiot. i got caught benchmarking bug for a while :)

oh yeah, i upgraded to a TL-60 yesterday which was very easy.

my temps don't seem to be much different judging by the temp of the exhaust.

using atitool the vidcard seems to be idling at 69 or so.

i thought i read where someone had problems with a couple of things after upgrading to the TL-60?

so if i get a mini toslink cable, i can use my laptop to a optical or coxial digital input on my receiver? :D:D:D

Many Toslink cables will come with mini adapters.
Or just buy an adapter.
Try Newegg or Amazon.
No need for anything special just the mini adapter.

Santech wrapped some copper wires around the heat pipe after slathering it with paste.
I think aluminum fins, cheaply made from aluminum foil used in hobbyist metal working crafts, offers more surface area to dissipate heat.
I swear Tanware posted somewhere about pasting something then blowing compressed air into the fan causing whatever was pasted to compress offering more contact surface for heat dissipation.
 
I have two of these notebooks. Mine is showing severe symptoms of the black-screen problem. My wife's is completely dead, despite many tries to get it working.

How many other people are having this problem?

This reminds me of the Deathstar saga, I am starting to think it's going to result in the same thing.

i feel ya. i traded away my xt5000t. i'll get another laptop one day but for now my smart phone is pretty good and holding me over :)

if only it didn't have that wireless problem, i would have definitely kept it

Were you running XP or Vista? I notice it runs warmer with Vista. Maybe the video chip problems increase with the extra heat. These are toasty little numbers any way you cut it.

Both of these are Vista systems.

Everex asked if I upgraded the ram. Trying to be truthful I said I had on one. I bought two crucial sticks to put in mine and put the A-Data stick in my wife's.

They then went on to say that the memory "corrupted" the computer and BIOS. What bullsh!t is that?

I then mentioned I had two laptops with the same problem. They said that while the symptoms are similar, the causes could be different. Yeah, bullcrap.
 
These people are truly hopeless. I called them the first week and talked to them about the heat. Mentioned RMClock and they accused me of overclocking. They look for any reason to void warranty.

I don't know if they are as dumb as they sound or just hamstrung by company policy.

Anyway thanks for the info. I can keep CPU in the 50's mostly in XP so may save the video. But who knows what is really causing these dead screens. 70 should be a walk in the park for a video card. I don't get more than 3 years out of a laptop anyway ... 2 more to go.

I really hope it's incompetence and not poor policy. Everex should know that selling a laptop with a good screen and decent graphics is going to hook the gamers and if they supported the product (which they didn't/don't) they could have much more $$$ later from other purchases.

At any rate, I've not had any problems with heat. I roll RMClock with .900 at full speed all the time and usually have the video card at 500/450 with no issues. The only precaution I take is having the right side of the lappy elevated about 1/4 inch to make sure the intake isn't blocked.

To the person with cooler air blowing out the side, I'm not sure that's a good thing so be careful-ish. If there's the same amount of heat being generated and less is getting blown out that would mean that more is going somewhere else. Just my .02.

Has anybody figured out a CPU overclock on this thing? I just don't have the fundage to score a better CPU.

I shouldn't complain too bad though. With AA/AF off, I can get manageable but not great framerates in Age of Conan (generally 20-25) with all ingame options maxed, shadows off, SM 2.0 @ 1440x900. It's not a super machine, but that game's no WoW!

I've also thought about using some JBWeld to hold ramsinks or HS fins that I've cut off of old stuff to sink the heatpipes, but haven't done it yet. Before anybody jumps the JBWeld, I know it's not a great conductor, but it's certainly not as good an insulator as the air that's normally up against the heatpipes so the worst that could happen is it won't work. If I ever get around to it, I'll post pics.
 
Much like Dell and HP our videocards are bad. This explains the quick death of many laptops.

Never seen an OC solution.

EvilWizard is spreading his poisonous truth ... some XT5000T's are prematurely assuming room temperature. Could be video related but symptoms are lacking. Alive one day and dead the next.

Jasmine is performing an autopsy on her cadaver as we speak. We may have to call in CSI.
 
Hey guys I want to upgrade my harddrive and install windows XP as well. Do you know if the StepNote XT5000T supports the Sata2 3.0gb a second or is it only the 1.5gb ones? I know it comes with a 1.5gb sata2, and its slow as snot.
 
Supports 3.0GBps, as long as you set your drive up right (jumpers and such).
 
The guy I sold my xt5000t says that it no longer will post. Just has the hd led and a few led lights turn on and then nothing. Screen stays black. Anyone having the same issue? I would like to help him out if I can. It was never overclocked and when i had it all I did was upgrade the ram.
