Everex XT5000T Support thread

superkdogg, I believe you are correct in your assumptions and understanding. If you find some cooling solutions please keep us advised. But doing the things you mentioned will keep things useable.

I second everything WillyWanker said about Vista except I blew it off entirely. Even if you have an 8600 card I defy you to see any advantage in DX10. Maybe if you have an 8800 with a quad core ... maybe then in Crysis. The XT5000T loves XP and so do I.

I look forward to following your cooling adventures. Good luck.

Hi,
Vista is without a doubt a resource hog, and a fat little piggy at that. Vista slowdown is because it primarilly hits the HD hard. While you can pull some of the new features out to reduce the hit you will never get it to the point of XP speeds. So unless you are just a non gamer who prefers their eye candy on the desktop do not bother with Vista.

I sincerly doubt there is any game now, or in the near future, that will run better on Vista than XP. I can say the same of productivity apps as well. If you are an experinced end user XP is by far just as powerfull if not in most cases a more powerfull OS.

So why do I run Vista, well for the 80% of users M$ is cramming this new OS down their throats. I can help my frends and co-workers much better if I am familiar with the OS and its constraints. I personally WAY prefer XP as a usable OS, it had becomme so familiar I could trouble shoot problems over the phone without a system in front of me by just visualizing the screens.

So thank you M$ for enlisting me, and countless other users, in your public Beta program to support hardware manufacturers in having to develop super computers for home use......

trying to think of a way to remove the conflicting irq's ;)

Oh this will remove the conflicts alright. The OS won't run, therefore no conflicts.

And there is no way to fix an IRQ "conflict" (which isn't really correct; it is normal for devices to be able to share IRQs). While not always the case, for us the devices that share an IRQ are hardwired that way. There is nothing you can do to change that short of redesigning the motherboard.

I have a couple questions before I get ahold of this thing tomorrow and start tweakin.

How much clearance is there between the heatsinks and the inside of the cover for them? I'm thinking maybe some little copper fins on the heatsinks/heatpipes may help w/cooling.

Has anybody run the cooling fan's power supply wires external and connected them via USB so that the fan runs 100% all the time? Might as well leave the yellow wire alone so you still have monitoring of the fan speed. I looked it up and it's a 5 volt .32 amp fan, so it should be able to do almost 10 CFM if it's at 100%. I might even wire in a variable resistor so I can control fan speed externally.....or, now that I think about it (I won't do this but somebody else could) the volume dial on the front would make a wonderful fan speed controller.....

Has anybody (despite the heat) tried overclocking this thing? Others in the family get up to 2.0/2.2, and I don't see anything holding us back other than heat and memory/mobo. Mobo is a non-issue since it will run way faster, and most memory has decent headroom so while 2.0 may be stretching it, 1.9 should really be in reach as far as I can see.

I'm definitely going to add some fins or something to the GPU side, as it looks inadequate. It probably won't help the card OC any higher, but it ought to keep it more stable under heavy overclocks and in long gaming sessions.

One really fast question that I think I already know the answer to.

Will the 7600 allow for WoW and similar games to be played on max settings at the native resolution?

Thanks!

I don't think we can get the cpu over clocked as there isn't a util, to my knowledge, that will alow us t d othis. Our bios is well locked up and with Vista at least, I havent seen a way to the fsb etc.

Before trying heat pipe mods with fins tec get some silver paste on and the heat pad off......

I read somewhere that nTune would allow CPU overclocking. I'll confirm or refute this later today.

It was post #49 in this thread where I read it, unfortunately the latest version seems to have taken away this support. Anybody have older versions of nTune or know where to get them?

If I remember correctly in later threads, once shutdown and restarted/rebooted the setting will not "stick". Had to redo each time.

My wireless doesn't work at all. It doesn't even show up in the device managers. I tried reseating it and it didn't work either. I also just recently updated the bios to c.1c. Does anyone have 1.1A around anywhere? This might correct the problem. Thanks.

Anyone replaced their dvd-rw? Mine no long reads discs, still lights up and spins up like it's trying to read but never actually reads them. Wondering what you all replaced it with since it doesn't look like a typical slim drive.

Buy an external drive.
Other than that I thought one of these sites, here or the Everex forum, listed a drive at Newegg that would fit.
Possibly a Sony.

The 2 versions of nTune I've tried don't work at all. They read the FSB as having a range from 8-20 (wtf) and none of the settings work-when you click apply it says it failed and restored original settings. Having to redo the settings after a reboot is no problem for me, since this computer is my answer to moving into a much smaller home office. 17" are hardly very mobile anyway and mine will be staying plugged in at least 95% of the time.

Vid card OC went pretty well-ran 510/450 for about 3 hours and no problems.

Very first thing I did was RMClock and set .800 for the 4x multi and 1.0 for the 8x multi and locked the 8x multi when plugged in. No overheating or instability at all.

Also ordered up a 5400 RPM 100 GB drive. I think I'll go the Raid1 route for data security. Maybe-still undecided on this. What I do doesn't involve enough writes to make Raid0 worth it, especially with a slowish CPU, but I may do it just because I can. If I find that storage is an issue, I may switch later, but since I have about a TB on my LAN for storage, I doubt I'll need more than 100 GB of it on my laptop at a time. It's mostly for games and websurfing is all. Still up in the air about what to do here.

I've yet to peel off the bottom and look for cooling mods. RMClock may be all it needs, and I'm not one to invent mods where they are not needed.

Has anybody successfully gotten AMD Overdrive working under Vista? Vista won't let me run it as admin (box is gray), but it says the program needs admin rights. I'm obviously an admin account to begin with......looks like I'll be doing the XP thing in order to facilitate overclocking her a little better. The CPU should be able to get at least 20% more clockspeed, which is worth using XP and doing some cooling enhancements if necessary.

For the record, AMD Overdrive will "run" under Vista if you disable most of the Vista security measures. Google make 'vista administrator work like xp' if you don't know how to do that.

Problem is that it still doesn't allow any CPU stuff to work. It does allow a lot of memory options, but everything I tried just locked up my system so I called it a loss and moved on.

A64Tweaker also runs, but does not do basically anything else. Any aggressive setting locked up my machine and RMClock did not show any changes in the CPU speed.

Systool didn't work at all.

Old versions of nTune did not initialize, telling me that they couldn't find a driver (probably means no mobo support in the driver).

Long story short, it sounds like any OC on this rig will mean going back to XP. I'm thinking I'll have a dual-boot setup since I would really like to run Vista so that I learn more about it. XP strongly seems like the way to go for general usability, gaming, and overclocking- you know, the three most important things I need out of a computer.:D

I don't think AMD Overdirve works with this chipset or am I missing something?
That could be totally accurate. Like I said, nothing I tried worked. I was basically just posting in case future readers would like to know about what works to overclock the CPU in Vista. So far, it's nothing. I'll probably go to XP tonight and see if I can come up with something there.

Overdrive was made for the new AMD/ATi chipsets, not this old nVidia chipset....

I now have XP installed, but nTune still won't work to OC my CPU.

It reads available FSB speeds from 8-20. It allows the sliders to work, then calculates that the new CPU speed would be (for example) 8x8=64 MHz, or 8x20=160 MHz. I know this isn't a Pentium I computer, so I'm not surprised those settings don't actually work.

If anybody reading this has actually figured out a combination of drivers and/or nTune version that work to OC the CPU in this machine, please post it here or PM me.

Thanks!

superkdogg, have you tried Clockgen? It reads the clocks but didn't do much for me, but maybe you can get it to work.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, clockgen won't do anything for me either.

So far the options I've tried are:

A64 Tweaker, Systool, nTune, A OD (I knew that it likely wouldn't support this mobo/computer-I'm just trying everything), and clockgen. I even looked through the bios but the system bus speed is "locked by chipset" in the bios and uneditable.

That last bit makes me think if the chipset is locking the system bus, only something that really likes to work with the chipset will help. Hence my focus on nTune. That and the fact that post #49 in this thread says that he got it working but went down to stock due to heat. That was before all the RM Clock posts and also before the new bios that allowed the CPU's to idle properly, so I think along with those two things and maybe some extra cooling this thing should OC pretty well with good memory.

Why doesn't this laptop have 5.1 surround sound support...

I didn't expect it to hold me back considering 5.1 technology is older than the laptop, and i spent a couple of hundred bucks on a good 5.1 system.

Now im finding just 2 speakers working (theres only one audio out jack...). Im extremely pissed what a waste of money.

Is there anything I can do to get 5.1?

I don't know about this part, but I've read it supports at least 5.1 through the digital output, just not through the jacks. If you're really that pissed, can't you get a USB sound card that would do 5.1?

It is 5.1 capable. You have to buy a digital plug. There is a thread about it somewhere on these 70 pages or at Everex forums.

ah i wish you guys told me! :D

i used the wireless card from my mom's laptop in the mini pci slot lol.

WIRELESS-1.png

i guess its express slot card or usb for me lol.

time to put the broadcom back in my mom's laptop. her laptop wouldn't boot with the atheros in it ;) :D

I got mine from Monoprice and it worked perfectly in 5.1 config.

That's not why I am posting though... thought I'd let you guys know that my vidcard finally DIED!

My battery is definitely on the blink as well as it now only gets about 45 minutes on a full charge... I do have two 100gb HDDs running though. It should still do over an hour IMO like it used to.

So glad the vidcard died within warrany period!

The RMA request was painless enough though. Thought I'd let you guys know since there are so many worried about the heat... and rightfully so.

Maybe you will get lucky and get a 5300 as a replacement, since replacing the vid card requires a new MB. If they do replace the MB it will be interesting to see if you get a version 3.

Did anyone ever get an internal BT/WiFi card working? I'd really love to add internal BT. The USB BT radio I have sticks out rather far, and I use most of the USB ports often.

My XT5000T recent refused to POST, and I was within my warranty period so I got an RMA and sent it back in. I just confirmed today that the laptop is on its way back with a replaced motherboard. Apparently the fact that I was slightly undervolting with RMClock for heat control (and couldn't, obviously, disable it before sending it in), and that I had swapped out the thermal pad for real thermal compound, either did not void my warranty, or they did not notice. Either way, I don't believe either of those two things killed my mobo.

Now I probably have to go back in and re-apply the thermal compound, as I am assuming there will be a new (not-that-effective) pad in there.

But on the whole I also found the RMA process to be painless, and I have had good experience with Everex technical support so far. They don't always have all the answers (who does), but I love that I don't have to go look up what times I can contact them. Mobo aside, I have had good luck with this laptop.

i recentlty replaced the TL-50 with a TL-58 and now the sound is lagging up like im running the cpu at 100%! anyone else have this issue and maybe a fix?

I'll bet you wisely did not mention the alterations on the communication. Good move. Guys in the back don't care apparently. LOL

I always say too much, they ware me down with stupid questions and suggestions. Just act dumb and get the RMA number.

Congrats on negotiating the warranty mine field successfully.

I really want the MoGo, if they would just release the damn thing.

Same here. First it was fall 2007 then Jan 08 now the website (as of yesterday) doesnt give a date.

All look to be Mini Pci. We need MiniPci E.

Would like to know what bluetooth is in the xa1526. Have you seen this everex pdf that shows a location of a bt module between the hd's and dvd burner (but what kind)
