Everex XT5000T Support thread

have a few questions

1. is there a new bios for this lappy

2. would raid option be enable if i install 2 hard drives

3. can the wireless be update to an intel or ralink (i have one of each spare)

thanks for any suggestions

i just got this lappy in today. i like it soo far, the keyboard and touchpad are my only gripes.

to answer your last quetion, number 3. yes, wireless can be replaced if its mini pci-e, other then that, your stuck.

also, im going to be selling the original stick of ram that i got with this laptop, i upgraded to 2x1gig ddr2-667 a-data stuff.

also, this laptop has a "turbo button" its the fan button. it reduced cpu speed to 800mhz and drops the volts down to .8v

2 things i cant wait for though. i cant wait to kill vista and get xp loaded up on here and i cant wait for my mouse to arrive, i HATE HATE HATE stupid touchpads.

anyone tried putting as5 on this cpu and chipset yet?? this thing runs really hot...

not only does it have a throttling button... but me and a friend of mine (who also has this laptop) discovered that it sometimes throttled down on its own (even when it was plugged into the AC adapter and still not hitting extreme temps). we used Notebook hardware control (a free app) to better set the throttling options better (Max performance while on AC, Dynamic (auto throttling) while on DC)

as far as AS5 goes...i remember reading in one of the threads about the xt500t here...switching from the stock pad to AS5 either made no difference or it actually ran hotter. I think the explanation was something like this: the way the chassis is designed, the contact plate for the heatsink/pipe needs the thicker thermal pad to actually make good contact with the cpu heat spreader and the contact plate

I just bought this a few days ago as well and I was lucky enough to get it for 699.99 at the Office Max site. It's an awesome laptop and offers a lot of bang for the buck (notice a trend here?) I installed 2gigs of G Skill ddr2 667 and it really flies now, although I'm still getting used to vista. Anyone find any good GPU drivers for this yet? Stock drivers don't let me adjust digital vibrance, contrast etc...I tried the drivers that were posted here from laptopvideo2go.com with the modded inf and I got the option to adjust contrast and all that but then I couldn't view video anymore, dvd or avi files in vlc. Any fix for this? I went back to stock drivers for now. Great laptop. I recommend you go get one. At this price get two! I am!

Are you sure about this... I have yet to see anyone successfully replace the internal Mini PCI-E card. I have tried, but the unit will not recognize the new card.

When you place a new card in the ESD table needs to reset to recognize the new card. Not sure how to do that with this Bios. Another issue may be the button to turn the wireless on and off. It may not even be compatible....

I believe someone on the Everex forum suggested trying a diff WiFi part from the same mfg, to see if it's hardcoded. Dunno if anything came of that, but I'd be interested - mostly b/c I'd like to add internal bluetooth and drop my USB dongle.

Hey, was going to buy 2 sticks of G.Skill 1gb pc 5300 (667 mhz) for my laptop, but have a couple more questions before i confirm purchase..

One, my sources told me that more memory may lessen battery time from its already low levels, any truth to that? Also, where do i add memory on this notebook, just take off the bottom case and i will see it, or what?

Also, Turion TL - 50 should be running @ 1600 mhz, but Core Temp says its running @ 801.68.. with power management at Minimum - maximum processor power of 100%, can someone explain why?

Thanks.

-eSteve

Edit: also, tried pressing the fan throttling button, did drop voltage back to .8, but turning it back off kept the processor at the same (801.68mhz) speed

Hi,
Hopefully we can post now without loosing the replies.....:(

Anyhoot, with the new video drivers I'm at 5.1 for graphics and 4.9 for gaming graphics without an overclock.

With the new Chipset/SATA drivers from the Microsoft update I went from 4.3 on the HD score to 4.5, Man do I want Raid 0 and 2x7200 rpm drives.........

The cpu is stuck at 4.6, if the scale is linear and not logarythmic then a TL 60 would put me at 5.7. I don't think that is the case though.

Tried the new R169 audio drivers, they are junk. Muffled audio but at least they were stable. BTW I've found if the audio gets muffled or lost on the left speaker I can mute the speakers and then unmute and the sound comes back.

The wireless update from Microsofts update is a must have. Increased signal strenght and not a single drop. Yippee...........

I know the hard core people here went over to XP, sorry but I like Vista. Yes it has some growing up to do and that has been true of any MS O/S.

Norton was tossed from day 1, went with Avast. it is free and no where near the resource hog. In the day I used to swear by Norton but times have changed.

A TL-60 (2.0GHz) will take you from 4.6 to 4.8... that is all. I have confirmed this myself. I think a TL-64 (2.2GHz) will take you to 4.9, and a TL-66 (2.3GHz) will still keep you at a 4.9! I believe you may need to hit 2.4GHz to break a 5.

has anyone found a program that with assist in changing the fan rpms and temp settings?

also...

ive tried every program mentioned that i can find to try overclocking my CPU

anyone find anything for this too???

everything ive tried for either purpose doesnt work or gives me the wonderful BSOD

Hi Athlon Alien,

I kind of figured the lower returns but was still hopefull. I really want to get a Raid 0 and 2 7200 rpm drives. Since I don't want to push the heat envelope in this thing I think the TL60's are my best bet.

I could get a TL64 but am afraid since AMD never released this for tray or box purchase it is just the few TL60's that barely made it to 2.2. I am not sure I wish to skate that close to the envelope, especially with my main system.

I am happy with the power of the 1.6Ghz but want the extra L2. If I have to replace it may as well up it as far as comfortable. My one fear is the heatsink tape.

I had great success on one installation a while ago. I stripped and cleaned the tape. Once this was done I used a polished copper shim the size of the cpu surface and thickness of the original tape. I then used the Arctic Silver GPU heat sink glue to fasten the shim to the cpu and then the heatsink to the shim. I lost 5C under load on that reinstall and was extreemly happy at the time.

for those of you who are cheap and only have the funds to buy 1 gig of ram....all hope is not lost. if you buy the adata ddr2-667 ram you can save the spd from it and then flash the existing ddr2-533 stick of adata ram that comes with your laptop. i did this and i tested it at ddr2-667 in both single and dual channel....32m spi passed flawlessly.

I'm running XP with 2 gigs of ram with this laptop, I have the built in XP power settings set to "Home/Office" and I'm using Notebook Hardware Control to control the CPU clock, but... the thing still throttles. For example, I'm playing CSS and getting good FPS then I'll notice fps drop to like 20-30, alt-tab, check NHC: 800 mhz. Then a few seconds later it'll go back up to 1600mhz. It seems like its auto throttling before it reaches 85 degrees, but Everex says 85 is the average temp (http://www.everex.com/support/xt5000t/xt5000t_faqs/xt5000t_faqs.htm#thermal) so anyone know how I can stop this?

I had that same exact problem. What I did was just take off the bottom cover and prop the back of the laptop up on a book, since I never moved the laptop. That improved the airflow under there dramatically and I no longer had throttling issues. I eventually got a notebook cooler for like $10 which not only solved my problems but even gave me some overclocking headroom.

Overclocking headroom...? What program are you using to overclock... I thought we were all still searching for one that worked?!?!

Also, to the poster above you... the laptop seems to throttle at about 80... so I have no idea how the normal speeds are 85, in fact, I'm pretty sure most of those 'normal' temps are made up, just like half of the Everex's specs/features.

Hi,
I haven't been able to get over 75C on my cores. All covers are on but I do use an aluminum base that props the back of the lappy up a bit. It rests on like an Aluminum screen too so I am sure this helps a bit.

I have noticed when you first turn it on the fan howles, I mean is really fast and slows down durring bios boot.. During operation it never gets going that hard. It would be nice to be able to over ride the default and get it going full blast when we want.

In all it would be nice to have a full control bios, not one that tries to protect us from ourselves. There are still a few of us out there that know, or at least think we know, what we are doing.

I am torn though, It took many years to get over the OverClocking addiction. A fully tweakable bios would be like putting a drink in front of an alcholic, and it his or hers favorite poison too.........

So, any talk on what the best cooler would be for this laptop? I have the LapCool2 and it seems to not do much as I still get up in the 80C's with it. What cooler do you guys use with this beast?

How the heck did you get it up to 80c?

Slap some AS5 on that thing pronto (and be sure to jam a dime between the retention bracket and the heat pipe so that it still makes proper contact with the core).

Ack, excuse me for being a notebook hardware noob, but what exactly is this retention bracket and heat pipe you speak of...

Waiting to recieve my everex xt5000t and i was wondering what the first things i should do when i get it are.... i keep trying to figure it out but all this talk about clocking and fps and drivers got me confused. so if u would make a list of stuff i should load or do straight out of the box that would rock.

and exactly which notebook cooler did you find for $10?? because i looked and couldn't really find any decent coolers for this gigantic computer. because like a lot of you i'm having the problem of it getting to 80C and throttling. Thanks

Most of the folks who are adding on less expensive coolers, are opting for what seems to be a slot-type cooler that clips on to the exhaust port on the right side of the XT5000t.

I used the Antec cooler. It's not quite big enough for the entire bottom but the Everex sat on it just fine and definitely dropped temps a LOT. It was $10 AR from Buy.com. I think I got best results with the bottom cover off and the cooler on. Very low noise too, compared to the tiny internal fan.

Also, sorry by overclocking I meant the video card. Before I could barely OC it without getting artifacts, but I was able to get a pretty good OC (don't remember how much) with the cooling pad.

Im tired of this throttling. Is there any way to turn my fan on 100% at all times. Also, can I lower voltage perhaps? Or can someone recommend a great cooler...and if you're going to recommend a cooler please tell me exactly how many degrees it cools it by?

I'm running at around 78-85 c on full load, and it throttles around 80 and its really pissing me off. None of the coolers are big enough to fit this beast it seems.

From the bottom up, you have the core of the processor, on top of that you have a copper block with a heat pipe running through it, and on top of that you have the retention bracket holding the whole assembly together.

What I did was remove the retention bracket, pull the copper block/heat pipe assembly aside, and use some AS5 thermal paste in place of the thermal pad that came with the notebook. After putting the heat pipe assembly back in place over the core, I stacked a dime on top of back of the assembly, and then installed the retention bracket back on top of that. The dime makes up for the lost thickness of the thermal pad, and keeps the whole cooling assembly snug against the core.

Hi,
I wanted to confirm the bios setting for throttle, it is set to 80C. This was confirmed by downloading CPUCool. The top setting was 80C as read from bios. I reran Prime95 and comfirmed it again.

as the 2 cores averaged above 80C it went to throttle mode. In throttle mode it never seemed to let the average stay above 75C before reengaging. but I went "Old School" and that improved my temps.

Now before anyone else does this I assume no responsability what so ever. This is an old trick I've used on heat padded cpu's before and it worked for me. I can now run prime95 at 8K FTT for 3 hours without a single throttling and at an average 77C. it is extreemly simple as well....

Go to Radio Shack or you favorite electronic hobby store and get a couple of cans of compresed air or dust remover. Important NO MOISTURE......... and that is all you need to get, besides downloading prime95 or some other dual core stresser.

Use your stresser untill you finally start throttling and then immediately shut down (never do this while there is power on). use the compressed air liberally on the outlet and inlet. to both be sure all dust is blown out and the heatsink gets cooled. Repeat this at least four times, Over Heat, Blow & Cool. (You will hear your fan free spin from the compressed air, try not to blow it up!)

So what does this do, well two things.

1st and most obvious is it makes sure you heatsink is clean and radiating as much heat to the air as possible.

2nd thing is everything as it cools shrinks, even heat transfer pads. if it cools rappidly the pad shrinks rappidly. Since the heat pad, by preasure and contact, is bound to cpu and heatsink surfaces there is a miniscule shrinking of the freely exposed area consensing and compressing the pad. this denser more molecularly aligned pad will now transfer heat better from the CPU to the cooler.

Now this also translate to under load giving more heat off from the vent, but out of load and at 1/2 speed it will give of less heat as the cpu just wont get as hot.

Now this is no major overclocking wonder, it may only translate to 2C-5C (2-7%) improvement but it may be enough to just get you by. You must remember to dust your cooler at least once a month and even more often if you are in a dusty enviorment.............

Also remember as you increase the transfer rate from you also increase the transfer rate of heat to the cpu, Dont overclock the GPU or you may be defeating the entire purpose.

Hope this helps others as well...............;)

Have to add an edit, if you leave the covers off dust at least once a week. More open area for air to get in is also more area for other particles..............

ive found a program that beats the throttling issue, its a thing called RMCLOCK. its pretty awesome, dual priming i forced my laptop to hit over 80ºC and had a cpu-z window opened, i hit 82ºC load and boom, no downclocking.

i just made sure to set my profiles, i have on for just chilling, websurfing etc, where its at 6x and .950v, one for battery savings, 4x and .800v and then power user, 8x with 1.125v. its really rad and keeps temps in check when i dont need to be haulin ass.

Good find.......
I am now using RM Cooler as well. Since I no longer have the Over heat issue I am not using the power management, but it is there if I need it.

I noticed though With Prime 95 I was averaging 77C but just that increase from 1.075 to 1.125 put me right at 82C but no throttling. I went to profiles and changed to 1.075 but am also wondering about under volting to see if that cools things down a bit.......

This is a serious problem and I almost would not recommend purchasing this laptop because of the overheating issue that it has. The throttling back and forth makes playing games impossible....

I'm not going to disable throttling as that could damage things, I just want to some how get this thing down 5c so it stops this insanity!!! I almost want to return the bloody thing.

I know this is probably not the propoer thread to request a comparison, but I've reading about the XT5000T for the past couple of days and have yet to make up my mind if I should get this or the HP dv9207us which has the HDMI output. I also read about an upcoming replacement which was posted back in April, but I have yet to see it anywhere online. The prices between the Everex & HP are very close, but with the Everex you don't have to deal with Rebate hassles.

I really would like to get one of the two in the next couple of days. If either one had a WUXGA screen, my choice would be very easy. I'd appreciate some feedback from any of you who've compared the differences between these 2 laptops as far as performance, build quality and customer support is concerned.

Thanks in advance,

Z

Aha, I gotcha now. They use thermal pads... no wonder it runs hot. Thanks for the info.

Well all I can say is I haven't done a dang thing. I'm running it out of the box, its 70 degrees in my room, but on heavy loads I consistantly reach 85c, even their website says 85c is their average operating temp....

It throttles down to 800mhz around 80c...so WTF, who designs this crap... Replacing any sort of thermal pad with arctic silver is most likely going to void my warranty.
