Yeah I get lag all the time when playing 2 vs 2. Once huge space battles start, the game slows down a lot. We tried a 4 vs 3cpu game too and boy talk about lag city. I'm talking about click to build something and watching it build 5 seconds later. Even typing was laggy.

Xenogears, try the Empire campaign. The Empire, I thought, was tons of fun. I'm still finding playing as the Rebellion to be a drag. I'm sure it improves once you get ships with some power, but that sure is taking a while to get to....

Rebels have the best land units overall the tanks roll over infantry and smoke any unit and keeping gliders for walkers and just harassing almost invincible.

Space rebels and empire can own hard. I am leaning towards rebels though for simple pwnage and higher pop cap :).

Rebels leave x and a wings alone they aren't much use build corellian corvs they will chew up any bombers and fighters that come around. One corvette will eat many squadrons up alive. The missle corvette is even better and it can zerg capital ship gunpoints easily. Nebulon B frigate is ok but build the missle corvettes instead! Mon Cal's save these bad boys for last they are best for handling heavy capitals use shield ability on this and other ships once down to 1/4 shield so you regen your shield quickly. Y wings alwyas keep 5-10 if possible in reserve once hyperspace is open to base or objective use 3-5 to kill what you want maybe hyper your mon cal in now at this point :). Marauders and empires equiv missle cruisers can fire torps that ae at long range and will insta kill many squads of fighters and bombers be careful with these as empire has the only means at avoidance.

Empire fighter bomber squads come with all capital ships be sure to keep some corvs handy and use the ability for a high ROF dmg ratio when you see y wings zerging something. Handy for taking out mines too really fast ;). Doo not assume empire capitals are heavy hitters they aren't they are carriers mainly. I like imperials however acclamators and victorys can work well and cheaper. Interdictors are good for keeping your enemy off your side of the map and force them to hoof it you can play around with these quite fun but overall useless in most cases. I just use capitals on capitals along with bombers and hope the fighters and corvs can keep the x and a's off. It's really easy to build a large mob with empire but can be hard to manage if you want a set plan.

Im having fun with Empire campaign, I just went up a tech level, so now I can build AT-AT's and victory cruisers, also I kinda like the battlecam - that way I can watch at close range Vader take out x's and y's with ease.

I dunno if my install is just screwed-up:

During the main campaign and in the screen to manage planets/fleets/ground forces/blah blah, as I got more planets and fleets, my system started to lag hard. Still playable, but i'm worried. Space/Ground actual battles run silk smooth, but that big galaxy map, lag central. Is anyone getting this problem?

I love this game. I only have one major beef with it so far:

When you start a skirmish in space, your entire fleet is all jumbled together. Since I generally assign Antilles to Group 1, X wings and Correllians to Group 2, Y wings to group 3, etc..... this makes it nearly impossible. I have to zoom in, click on 1, assign it, click on a group of Y wings, assign it, click on another group of y wings, assign it, etc....

This is different from land skirmishes, since when you bring in reinforcements, their right there. Drag and drop around your troops, assign, move onto next squad.

Anyway, beginning space skirmishes are a pain in the ass because of this.

You can just shift-doubleclick a unit to add all units of that type on your screen into a group. I normally do capital ships 1, anti-fighter 2, bomber 3, luke 4 (for his lucky shot, which is pretty broken :p )

ARRR this game is driving me insane!!!!!
I am doing the Rebal story and I have abt 1/3 of the planets on the right of the galacy, the Imp have another third spanning the bottom of the map.

I have just completed the Wookie mission (the next is pressing forward through the Imp held planets). I have decided to soladate my position where I am and have captured a couple of extra planets (Nall Hutta and another one).

The thing is the Imp keep lauching attacks on Kashyyk and fooking me up!!!
I have a massive fleet in orbit now withthe largest space station I have access to with crusers upto Alliance Frigage. I have all ship types in orbit (with majority Y-wings for anti-crusers and alot of Corvette since they are good anti-fighters even got some X and A wings)

BUT the imp either comes along with a relatively small fleet and kicks my ass (its the auto-battles) or really screws me up. I have abt 50,000 credits and am churning out fleets as well as snowspeads and the heavy tank + art

HOwever, whenever I do get a sizeable force and decide to stop the imp by attacking Bothawui (where they always launch from) I get kicked!!! and then they come over and spank me!

its only on easy, I dont get it?

Don't have the game (yet), but...wouldn't the easiest tactic be to attack a *different* Imperial world than the one their forces are massing at and drawing off some of their resources? Dunno if that's even possible (again, no game....yet), but one wonders about the strategic depth to the game...

If the Auto-Resolve causes you to lose units, then don't use it. Once, I outnumbered the enemy about fifteen-to-one and used Auto-Resolve. I ended up losing most of my army and had to spend a lot of time rebuilding it.

you don't know what kind of forces are at each opposition controlled planet. You can send C3PO and R2 or a Spy droid to the planet first to get an idea of what's there but it still doesn't show what's exactly there.

I never use Auto-Resolve unless it's a ground battle that i know i can easily get. Here's a battle i had a few days ago, all the forces i had there were destroyed. The only thing that lived was my space station - level 4 i think, and barely at that. I lost a lot more tartan cruisers than shown because of the space station's reinforcements. But I did have a little help from my hypervelocity cannon :p

^^ I have to agree, if you want to lose units, use auto resolve.

You have to tough it out and do it yourself to keep an effective fleet/army.

I know exactly how you feel! I ran into the same frustrations at exactly the same part. It was annoying me for a long time! However, I don't know how you managed to save 50,000 credits and that may be part of your problem. I spent every ounce of my money on an army. Auto resolve does cause you to lose more guys, so you need a sizeable fleet. Since I don't have time to devote to taking all the planets manually, I used auto resolve for all battles not storyline related. After the wookie battle, I built a sizeable fleet and took over mon calamari with auto resolve. I continued building up a massive fleet that I put every single one of my troop in and continued to take over every single planet available with auto resolve. Then I had no probs just concentrating on the storyline missions.

However, this strategy is not recommended for most, since it may take away some of the enjoyment since when left with just the storyline missions, the game is very very short. You're meant to take over planets manually to get the most out of the game. However, it took me about 1-2 hours to conquer all planets with auto-resolve, but I imagine it would take days if I tried to do it all by hand.

WOW that sorted it!!!! I already had Mon Cal it was Bothawui that was giving me jip!!!
launching raids and auto-resolve just loosing them for me (forcing me to re-capture Kashyyyk and re-building the land and space

Only got soo much money cause kept getting raided!!! and in re-building my money would increase

Auto-resolve off and Bothawui space get taken - those Marauder missile platforms do alot of DAMAGE!!!! have 3 of them back with a couple of corvette to protect them and send in the Y-wings, A-wings (just as escort) and a few corvettes just for some firepower!!!

Land battle got done as well. Those snowspeeders are execelt. Love the animation as they take down a ATAT, but on the whole they are great for hit and run.

Well estabishing myself at Bothawui before pressing on

Oh yea space battles lag bad once you bring in all flleets full force at a station. Empire with some Imperials spacing in as well as some cruisers or corvs once they unload the fighters good god :).

The game isn't bad simple rock paper scissors unit wise one of the better SW games I think the graphics could be a hell of a lot better though.

BFME2 played that but it seemed so limited in the demo I hope the retail version isn't limited unit upgrade wise.

...that is just it, you don't use ships with power as the rebellion. I've yet to find a space battle in the campaign that I couldn't win with just y-wings and x-wings---not counting missions where you have to bring along something else for the storyline. I'm saying that with 3/4s of the space map currently controlled by the rebelllion, fyi.

Y-wings take out space stations and capships, X-wings take out enemy fighters/bombers and then help the Y-wings. I have the Y-wings take out shield generators and hangars and then go back and pound the station to scrap.

Capships are also vulnerable to planet-based defenses, which can get quite nasty.

Take 20-30 y-wings into the next fight, the star destroyers will not be an issue.

Yeah that's so horribly inefficent. You drop units left and right. I started one battle with like seven Y-Wings and they were shot down before I could even MOVE them. On the Empire Campaign, on Hard, I got 67% Military Efficency, which I think wasn't that bad. Economic and Kill Efficency were both 100%. I guess I don't like losing 30 ships to win a freaking fight...

...but they're fighters and bombers, look at what they cost. Bang for buck, you can't beat them, and the build times are so short, they're disposable.

Okay, I'm starting to get better. Rebel campaign is all about assault Frigates and Nebulon B frigates. Getting better at using unit specials too. Taking Mon Calamari with that shield and the artillery was a bitch...I musta sent 400 Mon Cals to their deaths :D I find fighters and bombers almost useledd unless you lucky enough not to have to face them famned Patrol ships...they just pick 'em off without much effort/

You have to use your x-wings as a screen in front of the y-wings.

Send in a wave of x-wings with a wave of y-wings an inch behind. The enemy will focuse on the x-wings, while your y-wings just sail on through and trash the enemy.

Do not use auto-resolve. Look at all the dumb mistakes the enemy AI makes, do you really want an entity of the same caliber commanding your forces?

That's an interesting tactic. The thing that gives my fighters the most trouble is the Imp missile boats. They rip through fighters like there's no tomorrow.
Although, I've never had more than 6 or 7 squads of fighters in any given battle. I suppose if I brought a lot more Y-Wings the missile boats would go down a lot faster.
My strategy has been to have a few squads of Y-Wings attacking big targets, X-Wings attacking Imp fighters, and mainly Corvettes with a frigate or two for primary assault against missile boats and gunboats.

Sometimes I put 4-6 missile frigates behind the fighter/bomber screens, at max range, just to make the battle go a bit quicker, but it isn't necessary.

The key to using x-wings and y-wings vs capitol ships/stations is to saturate their defense. Sure, the capitol ship guns are powerful, but they a) can only fire so often and b) can only target so many ships at once. If you send in 5 groups of each, they'll just get destroyed before doing anything. If you send in 10 groups of each, not only will they survive, they'll take out the important hardpoints on the defending space station. Take out the hangars so they can't launch reinforcements and take out the shield generators so the x-wings can pound them too. After that, it doesn't really matter, since the capitol ships go down very quickly at that point.

Another reason I prefer the fighter/bomber approach is because of that nasty planet-based cannon that knocks out 2 hardpoints and turns the rest yellow/red on a capitol ship each time it fires. I've only saw that twice before I stopped using capitol ships, lol.

The x-wings are mostly decoy/cannon fodder, their only other important role is to remove any tie bombers if I have vulnerable frigates/capitol ships required for the mission. I'll usually leave 5-10 as a screen for any ships like that. There is that one corellian hero frigate which is good for that role too.

Yea the Sundered Heart? I've used that extensively in almost every space battle.

Here's a question....what do the field commanders and fleet commanders do? I know it says they give a bonus, but I'm not sure I can see the results.

Its kinda like having a Captain in a fleet. He has experience to pass along.

It was always best to have commander, general and admiral in Rebellion in a fleet. It seemed to do better to me.

I like Empire at War as a single player game. The length of time that Galactic Conquest scenarios run make it hard to commit to playing a random opponent online. As for things mentioned on this last page, auto-resolve usually causes you to lose more units than you would commanding the battle by far, but in multiplayer games when you move to neutral systems you have no control over the battle, which is ridiculous. I normally have to make a ton of units just to lose most of my attack force on one planet and get a minor victory. The auto-resolve in those are just insane. Wish there was another way of doing neutral planet battles in multiplayer. Also, bombers and fighters get taken down fast by tartan cruisers/corellian corvettes very quickly. Best bet is to mix and match. I usually have a mixed fleet and pull in different ships accordingly. I use missile cruisers for space stations and larger cruisers, bombers for space stations and cruisers, fighters and corvettes for fighters/bombers, and cruisers for corvettes/cruisers/space stations.

Bombers and fighters do get taken out by Corvettes/Tartans easily which I think was the purpose of them, best thing to do is to send in your bigger units that can soak up the fire better, read Mon Cal cruiser, Nebulon B with shield power on, ISD etc and then move in your bombers to strike at the hardpoints.

You could do that, or just saturate them with bombers, which will make for a quicker battle, and a fleet that takes less time to build/repair. On top of that, how many planets are you going to upgrade to where they can build capitol ships? Just about every planet you have will be capable of producing x-wings/y-wings and vectoring them continually to the front.

This is similar to Mitchell arguing the coming era of air power vs. the continued reliance upon massive destroyers.

Or you could do that, swarming them with bombers is an effective if in-elligant way of doing it. ;)

Well the bomber method is just zerging which most are used to in an rts. Bombers don't need to worry about shields anyways...

One thing though is against a human opponent corvettes take almost as long as fighters and bombers to build the corellian and tartans are easy builds because personally I have always kept 10+ in reserve in any fight especially if I fight against the Empire. Three corvettes will kill 10 groups of bombers real quick REAL quick if the tartan ;).

I'm playing the Campaign mode right now, and I can't get past Rebel Campaign 5, "Steal from the Rich"...the Droids just won't go to Mon Calamari to steal from them. It says they have to be alone. They are. Mon Calamari is the only planet I have to attack. The others aren't available yet. What am I doing wrong? What do I do now???

HELP!!!! This is very frustrating!!!
