I havent even been in the game in like 8 months. I left my ship halfway between SagA* and the bubble.

I see what you're talking about now. I've started the other tutorials now. I have to find a way to better maneuver the ship via remapping the keys though as I do not have a joystick.

While Elite Dangerous can be played without a HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) or joystick, this is one game where having the proper controls makes a huge difference in game play and will save you a ton of frustration. It's also pretty much an essential "must have" if you are playing ED in VR. If you are going to invest any real time/effort into playing ED, I'd seriously consider investing in one. It doesn't have to be a fancy/expensive setup either, a basic $40-50 option like a Extreme 3D Pro Joystick or the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X will do wonders. Added bonus is that it can be used for other sims/games as well.

I've been playing this since Beta in late 2014, and I'm still in it today hauling goods, exploring and such, with over 20 weeks logged total game time. One of my last screen captures below.

So it'll be about 20m credits per 500ly carrier jump, based on beta. That's...not cool. I may hold off on Carriers until they get "patched". Still have an itch to play, especially back in VR someday (my Oculus broke). As much as I may gripe about the game (not here, usually on Frontier forums, heh) I always come back to play it.

I also started in beta, but stopped after Powerplay. Tried to play some more few times after, can't make myself.

Visuals are great, learning to fly was fun, but after that it was downhill for me. Lot's of never utilized potential and all that's left is grind.

This was actually one of the few games I played using the Steam controller. I got a lot of usage out of the touch pads and extra buttons, so I didn't feel the need for a Joystick.

Will that Thrustmaster you mentioned also work for Microsoft Flight Sim X?

You still had to use the keyboard though, correct?

Yes, and pretty much every Windows PC flight Sim out there. Look under the features tab on the product page, second column:

Configurations by default:
  • PC : Flight Simulator X (**) Microsoft®, the most popular flight simulator

Thank you!

This game is gold with VR + HOTAS.
Probably the best VR experience I've had.

Is Oculus the best VR to get right now?

Also, does this game have a storyline? (sorry about all of the questions)

No storyline, and I can't answer which VR system is the best. I owned the first Oculus and it was alright, now I have Index which I find good enough. It feels better on the head than Rift but it's also more expensive.

Finally started playing this. Bought it like 3 years ago, went through the tutorial, realized after the tutorial the game basically goes "okay..there's space. Good luck!" And gave up after a couple hours.

A youtuber I watch recently started playing this again, and with the horizon expansion being on sale for like $5 or something I grabbed it.

Insane amount I still have to learn. Driving the SRV is hard as hell. But I'm enjoying the grind so far

I've had a blast playing it. A while ago, I hit the elite explorer rank but lately I just jump on to enjoy the scenery.

Nice. First thing I did was the 2 system back and fourth grind for imperial rank, getting to Duke got me enough money for an Asp Explorer, did some engineering grind after that, went to the jameson crash and what not, got my FSD to level 2.

Set it up last night for mining for the first time. Was scary because I had to take off the supercruise and docking assists to fit everything and fly without training wheels for the first time haha.

Went to the triple LTD hotspot and filled up my explorer, caught a ride on a fleet carrier the 300ly back to the sell point and made 98 mil. Bought a python and gonna make it my mining ship.

My kinda "end goal" right now is get the Explorer all decked out and become a fuel rat 😁

I've decked out a Krait Phantom for exploring but my end goal is to get an Imperial Cutter to be a combat beast. The Krait Phantom needs some Guardian gear but that's going to be an interesting journey to figure out.

Got my FSD range engineering up to level 5 on the Asp and the Python. Did a bit more mining tonight. Instead of going the 400 LY to the mining spot, I went the 100LY to the selling spot and hopped a ride on an FC. First run was not good. 2nd one was better. Got Elite rank in trade :D

Congrats! I'm slowly working up on Trader since I haven't mined at all.

Oh thats cool, I had no idea Inara did all that. According to it I'm running about 200 million/hour right now in my Python. Been debating buying a type 9 but I really don't want to engineer a third ship yet. I've done literally 0 combat outside of the tutorial. Eventually I'm thinking I want to get a Corvette set up for that. PVE only though. I'm not a great pilot. Lose my bearings all the damn time.

Well... that was expensive. Got the FSD to extended 5 with mass manager, and whatever ranks Felicity Farseer could get me on everything else.Gonna just keep grinding creds for a while, then get to more engineer stuff.

I want to make a trip out to the Guardian sites to get those modules though, but I really... REALLY suck at driving the SRV. I think I need to pick up an xbone controller for it.

Please tell me that you are at least using a HOTAS setup to play ED and not just playing with a keyboard and a mouse. ED is a game that really benefits from a HOTAS setup.

Just been KB and mousing it. I've got an old Saitek X45 in the closet. Last time I used it I remember having nightmares finding functional drivers. I've been sniffing around to pick up something newer. But I have a strong belief that my wife would murder me with how much I spent on my sim racing gear haha.

If you still have that sim racing setup, then all you may need for good ED controls isn't a HOTAS, but rather just to add a good joystick. You can re-purpose your pedals and use them for throttle control. All you'd need is to add a good stick to the mix. Ya, that old Saitek may not be the best option - it most likely is worn and its sensors weren't all that great to begin with.... and like you said, getting drivers for it that work may be problematic. A good modern joystick is fairly inexpensive though - about the same as a high quality gaming mouse or a dozen fancy Starbucks coffees. For example, this Thrustmaster can be had for $70 - it along with some pedals would make for a really nice ED control setup.

Oh yeah, still got it. While she wasn't happy with the rig, I think the tipping point was when I had to build it it's own PC because it wouldn't fit in the office/gaming room haha. New wheel is coming this year hopefully. I want to go direct drive. Pics dont give it good scale but those are 27's, monitor stand is about 6ft wide lol.

I've debated getting a HOTAS and mounting it to the rig, but I like playing Elite on my "normal" PC (sig rig) in the office where the wife has her PC setup as well.

*threeofnine actually uses hotas

I still keep an eye on this despite being intimidated. Where are things at now for brand new noobs that wanted to jump into this thing? How overwhelming is this?
