Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

I've never played Elden Ring or any games from this company.

I'm a PC gamer, and almost finished with Doom the Dark Ages, and totally burned out on World of Warcraft after 20 years, and want something new and fresh to play. Would you recommend this game for me?

Absolutely. I'd consider it to be among the best games of all time. It also does a pretty solid job of easing you into things so you can get used to the gameplay. If something seems too challenging to defeat early on, it probably is. You might watch one of those "things I wish I knew before playing XXX" videos first, just to get a broad idea, but otherwise you can just hop in and see what the world is all about.

This game changed gaming for me as I know it. It was my first Souls game and I've since ran through ALL of the rest. If you get through it it'll open a whole new world of gaming for you. If you decide to hop in blind you'll likely find yourself frustrated and incredibly confused, these games don't hold your hand in the slightest. Patience and persistence is the key. It took me a ton of time in this game to get the mechanics down, but once I did and started making progress, man, among the best gaming experience I've ever had, might be my favorite game of all time.

I would say start with Dark Souls remaster because it was the easiest for me and a more linear game which I think is good practice. Glad I started with Demon Souls and DS1. Elden Ring is better in every way being open world and lots of places to find/explore but I found myself wandering a bit too much and not getting much done progression wise and ended up being over leveled for some stuff. Also that first real mini boss is tough as hell and the game gets easier once you get passed it.

Idk, I think DS3 would make a lot more sense than 1 as a transition into ER. However, the fact that ER isn't linear, that you can just run around collecting things and clearing catacombs, caves, and the like gives you a lot more opportunity to acclimate. Should probably just hop in. I wish like hell I could play it for the first time again.

I can see that somewhat. However DS3 is one I have yet to beat. I found it pretty brutal about half way through and never went back to it. DS1 I beat in a week. Either way, Elden Ring is a no brainer. Probably the most fun but not the easiest for a souls first timer.

Wow that's crazy. I thought the actual dungeons in DS1 were suuuper hard, not to mention the insanely tedious runs to bosses. That game was a one and done for me, but also I had performance issues with that game for some reason across multiple systems, never got to the bottom of it and no one else seems to have the issue. DS3 to me feels more balanced and approachable (well, except for the DLC), it's my favorite next to ER, you gotta get back to that one.

I made it prob 1/3 the way through ER but ended up starting a new char and beat it with a friend over 2 months or so with the seamless co-op mod (ini edited to make it as tough as single player). We really took our time and explored everything. I actually enjoyed that more than the single player.

Doing another playthrough DS2 (SoTFS) since I never played that version. prob 30% through after about 20 hours.

I agree that DS1 would be a good starting point...not because it's the smoothest transition to modern Souls game but because it's the opposite, the most obtuse...this will then make you a hardened Souls vet which will make the other From Software games easier in retrospect

I played all the Souls games in order of release (including Bloodborne and Sekiro) and found it easier to understand all the mechanics by starting from the beginning...going from Elden Ring and working backwards would be fine as well but I don't think you'll appreciate Dark Souls 1 (or even DS2) as much by doing it this way...it'll seem dated in comparison

I'm a PC gamer
Note: a controller is recommended for Souls and Soulslike games. Xbox controllers work off the bat with Windows PC. Regardless of whatever Souls or Soulslike game you play first you might get your ass kicked in for a bit as you adjust to the genre. Don't get discouraged, dying in these games is normal and part of the experience.

if you enjoy getting stomped over and over and over and over, then yeah they are supposed to be great.
personally i like beating the shit outta stuff and winning after a try or two, not 30.
these guys are a bunch of masochists ;)

Well, with elden ring you can have easier time with magic without needing to perfect your iframe dodge skills, I mean you still need to get gud but at least there are options for getting by.

It’s a shame you feel that way. These games are so rewarding, nothing beats the feeling of triumph you get once you learn the bosses and finally take them out. These battles have literally had me shaking so many times. After getting into these games others that are easy by comparison generally bore me senseless. If anything that’s a reason to avoid them, most everything else just feels lame af now. There’s a huge learning curve but once you get good at one, you’ll be at least decent in the rest. It took me probably 30 hours in ER until I started to kind of “get it”, and I’m so glad I did.

One of my favorite things about them, and this one in particular, is the sheer volume of build variety, it’s damn near infinite. I have almost 800 hours in ER and that’s with almost no PvP, it’s just multiple replays using new builds, feels fresh with each one. Also, the amount of content you get for $60 here is absolutely stsggering.

Sony Acquires 2.5% Share in Bandai Namco

This morning, Sony announced in a press release that it has entered a strategic partnership with fellow Japanese entertainment conglomerate Bandai Namco...Sony agreed to acquire 16 million Bandai Namco shares for roughly 68 billion yen (around $465 million), gaining control of 2.5% of the company's total shares...

Strategic partnership likely referencing creating anime / manga / game collaborations or co-owned IPs in multiple media formats, because of crunchyroll and funimation ownership. Perks of being a shareholder.

Well that was unexpected. I would have expected Nightreign would get all the attention post-release.

Just started a new run and decided to use flails as I've not really messed with them. It took me a little while to get acclimated (was dying quite a bit) but now that I have the Nightrider Flail and have leveled up a bit I'm straight up crushing everything in my path. I can run up to any of the 'slow' bosses and hold L2 to practically insta-kill them with spinny bleed procs while 2-3 heavy jump attacks will generally poise break faster bosses. I've been doing a bit of co-op in the dungeons which has been entertaining as well. I'm going to try to stick with it through to the end but I usually burn out around Altus Plateau which I'm rapidly approaching.

Almost to the end. Just killed Morgott and am on my way to finish off Volcano Manor before I hit Mountaintop of the Giants. Currently running a +18 Nightrider Flail with a Cold Infusion on Wild Strikes. I'm mainly Dex so Keen does do more damage but the cold/bleed double-proc are too awesome. I've been doing a ton of co-op and blue-ghosting; killing bosses before they hit phase 2 and saving scrubs from red ghosts has been a lot of fun.

Ugh. I can't wait for the true successor to this game. That'll 100% be the game I actually take time from work off. The current lineup of future Souls-likes is bleak to me.. couldn't get into Nioh 1/2 so don't care about 3, Lords of the Fallen 2 is a maybe, never played Code Vein though so maybe that and the sequel are ok? Everyone says the genre is flooded but I certainly don't see it that way. I've ran through almost all of em and am itching for another.

I'll probably play ER again at some point but man I beat it to death, 800 or so hours and all PvE, obtained all weapons (min 2)/armor/spells/incantations inc. DLC, all endings.. there's just nothing left except maybe PvP but I never understood the appeal.

I agree.

Bloodbourne on PC would have been amazing, but we'll just have to wait for their next IP

Yeah it would, though the emulation using ShadPS4 is REALLY good, just no online features.

Have you tried Wuchang Fallen Feathers or Lies of P, both of which are solid Soulslikes.

Oh yeah, LoP is the goat Souls-like and Wuchang is great too. Also played First Berzerker: Khazan, Black Myth: Wukong, AI Limit, and Enotria: The Last Song.

I never did finish this. Last I knew the game didn't like more than 60fps... Is there a mod for higher fps yet? 4k60 is fine but 4k120 is better.

Have any of you tried any of the overhaul mods? I kind of want to try one out as I'd like to get back in there but need something new/different.

I've been getting straight up murdered on The Great Jar challenge. It's pulling in builds with Waterfowl Dance even though I'm just lvl 99.

Play that particular save in offline mode

I'm RPing a Carian Spellsword and loving it. The build diversity is crazy. I'm coming upon 500 hours; what an amazing game!

So paid DLC for other platforms then? Surely for just a few weapons/armors/ashes it'd be pretty cheap, either way I'll continue to fund them as long as they keep Souls games (single player though) coming.

I have little interest in playing ER on the Switch 2, will surely be a significant downgrade by every metric. I kind of hate that they're doing these Nintendo projects tbh.

rumor is it'll cost around $4 for just the new DLC content
