Dumpster Diving!

at the dump a few days ago i found a sega genisis model II with sonic 2, fifa soccer, and some other sports game, and ac adapter and tv plug thingy in box, no controller though but i have a few extra controllers.
i also found a macintosh classic 2(collectors value to me) and a digital dec pc(for a friend who is blind so he cant really go dumpster diving(or dump diving) so he asked me if i can bring him any dec brand equipment, or anything else thats cool that i dont want) i also found a compaq pII(kinda working) a few weeks ago without ram, hdd, or cd drive, but im thinking of adding it to my collection.

wow, did this thread get reset or something? I remember posting in this topic back in like 2002 or earlier. I had a similar handle too, but it got deleted prolly because of inactivity. lol. I remember becaues I would always go DDing with my hax0r buds. We found some cool stuff like paper shredders, old video games, a 17'' computer monitor, a few old computers, etc.. It was fun. One time we were in the dumpster and a garbage truck came and hooked onto the dumpster to dump it. Then we all popped our heads up and started yelling. lol. It was almost like star wars with the trash compactor. The driver really looked surprised and started laughing at us cause it was like 10pm. But I need to get back into the swing of things. This was back in high school when I had the time. Next time I go, I'll let ya guys know what I find and post some pix. :D

Yeah there was a big forum overhaul about a year and a half ago and everything before the first of 2004 got purged. Also accounts inactive for a certain period of time got purged.

Is it by any chance a quantum bigfoot? I never considered then ultra thin but they're the only "modern" 5.25" hard drives I can think of.
that's definately a Bigfoot.... the OEMs liked 'em cuz they were cheap, slow as hell though..... 4200rpm or something like that....... the things must be built like tanks though, i've got 4 of them laying around (8.4gig) and they all work great......

found a massive bag of candy in the blockbuster dumpster, approximately 300 candy bars. im afraid to try one....

Geez, I want to know where the magic dumpsters are that contain old P1 computers.
I just had to pay for one on eBay! Should come in tomorrow.

Where do you pick up things like that, because my old landlady's boyfriend just used to come in with piles of old PC's. he had like seven. He'd find them and fix them up. But WHERE??

my local community college was selling p3's a few months ago. they were from their computer science labs, and they worked just fine. only 5 bucks too. i woulda got one, but i had no use for them (especially with only a gig or who of HDD space)

so, i donno, contact your local college and see if they've got some old computers they're gonna get rid of soon. if they dont have any then, you could always leave a number for future dumps :)

It seems like most of the state schools in missouri have surplus auctions. Truman has one every few months, MU has one about every month, and Northwest has one every few months. Not exactly dumpster diving, but you can get cheap computers and shit there sometimes. MU sells most of their stuff by the pallet, so you can usually get a pallet of nice monitors for $100 or something. Too much for me, but if you actually need that many monitors then it's a good deal.

$100 dollars

keep 5 monitors

sell the other monitors.

Profit!

Step 1: Steal Underpants
Step 2: find poo stains
Step 3: profit?

*scratches head & wanders off*

ask your local police department? trash is public property if i remember right, and unless they lock it, i think it's free game...

Me and a couple guys I work with decided to spend a couple hours diving today since it was sunday and everything was still closed when we left our place of employment (night shift). We scored a very nice office chair from staples, a dell 4600 case in excellent shape from some random small computer store (dell cases really are nice!) and we got one of those thick plastic floor mats for the chair at another staples. A couple small things also like a whiteboard and a brand new electric pencil sharpener, but nothing really huge.

I'm definitely satisfied with the haul, will be making the rounds again tuesday night

Pretty unintentional but a good dive non the less.

I found a Tom Brady signed copy of the sports illustrated for Superbowl XXXVI in the dumpster when taking out my trash this morning

being a pats fan this is pretty cool

of course who know's if it's a legit signature or who this Liz character is who it was made out to

either way i'm happy!

It's funny to hear what people find when they go out looking. I'm also rather amazed at what some of you come across. I work at an OfficeMax as the Logistics person. I'm actually in charge of destroys and whatever ends up in the trash. It's funny to think that some OM's and Staples don't actually break stuff. I mean .. if I have a pencil sharpener that might be defective .. or say something just gets sent to the trash .. I make sure it doesn't work before it goes in the dumpster. I've had lots of software recalled .. have to break each disc. Lots of perfectly good chairs that I rip in shreds.

I guess I'm actually your enemy in this.. well just the person that prevents the joy of finding free stuff. Don't get me wrong .. I love finding free stuff. I'd throw stuff in the trash and not break it .. if it didn't risk my job :(

Timm3h, personally I'd be stockpiling until the day I moved on to a new job, in anycase that's not a bad gig, breaking shit!

The plus side is the majority of shit I break is already broke .. just have to break it more. Smashing the shiznit out of a piece of crap Lexmard 3-in-1 is a great way to relieve stress... hahahahaha. Though .. as soon as I find out the city laws I might go out and check a few places :)

Okay, for many of you, you may pass out.

Couple weeks back I found an emachines case with a 40gb hard drive, 48x cd burner, 56k modem, and xp home license sticker. All test out ok except the modem, which I don't have any real means to test with. Yesterday I snagged a 19" CRT that seems just fine as well.

Quite amazing. They actually hire someone to break stuff before throwing it out. That shows you the mentality that these larger corporations have. Its really kind of sad actually.

What store's dumpster were you in. Also I live in NJ so good guess!

ALso a few days ago, my friend found a Linksys Wireless Router antenna at 7.0 dbi

hehe picked-up a Konica/Minolta color laser behind a office supply store. Only thing wrong with it were the pickup rollers. Works like a champ now! :p

One thing that would help everyone here with dumpster diving is calling up your local trash pick up company (preferably the one that picks up the trash for Best buy, Wal-mart, Office supply stores, stores like that., also the name on the side of the trash dumpster might help with calling) and ask them what is there schedule for picking up for the business, I mean why wouldn’t they tell you, its only trash and they are in business to get it out of the trash can, so your just helping them, you could also pretend to be the manager of the store and ask when it is. This is just an experimental Idea, I personally have not tried it, but if someone does please post I am curious to see the results. Who knows they might even be willing to help. :D

Haven't had the best of luck over here (Maple Grove, MN).

Gone multiple times.. Rainbow Foods (a grocery) through out all their display, picked up some cool stuff to hang on the wall. Found an (at least) 150 lb wooden ... center of some sort from behind Old Navy, friend is using it as a tv center now. That's about all our luck. Tons of dumpsters, usually just find smelly junk, boxes full of trash, or stuff that no one wants. We've got quite a few places to dive, too. A few strip malls, an Office max, two furniture stores, misc. other stores. No luck so far yet, gone maybe 5 times all in the same month. Haven't been for awhile.

Any tips on how to scare up some good items? Sorry, haven't read the whole thread. As a matter of fact, I haven't read a DD thread since yoda643's old FAQ before it was unstickied a long time ago.

PIcked up a nice cart.

3 shelved, high grade wheels, sturdy plastic.

Very fricken nice, Man. Holds all my DVDs, CDs, Video Games, My mostly played consoles, and my modem and router quite nicely, with plenty of room for more shit!

Hey you're in Maple Grove to, cool. Lived there since 1991, but now I'm in Mankato for college during the school year.

I never could find any good dumpsters in Maple Grove. I only looked a few times downtown, but came up empty handed every time. Maple Grove Square right outside Osseo might have some dumpsters that aren't compactors like most of the down town ones are.

Anyone living in the Montville Norwich Newlondon Waterford Area of Connecticut care to get a small team together for a dive? Or perhaps you know of some good spots? I've been hitting up Staples peir 1 Dick's sporting goods, and Radioshake.

Hey Guys, Down here in Austin, interested in getting into some diving. Know of any good spots?

Yea, I have been wanting to hit up Central FL for awhile. I know UCF has a nice engineering dept. -- always thought some nice bits might end up in their dumpster.

Anyone in the Orlando area ever found some good spots? Maybe get a gathering together? Most of my friends are afraid to dive due to the possible legal implications, I on the other hand dont care.

Union County NJ representing. I've gotten tons of great stuff when my stepdad worked as a janitor at a big office building. Monitors, momtherboard connection kits. Whole computes, leather chairs etc. USB drives as well.

That ended a while ago though... :(

And now, I can't find a decent place around me that doesnt use compactors. Staples around me don't, but I have no use for the old staircase they threw out, and some staples rack things. Have yet to see a chair or anything IN the dumpster.... So anyone round me know of any good spots or wanna team up?

I don't know of any good spots currently. Wish I did. I'm in college right now in Mankato, and there isn't any time to drive around.

Staircase, not stairmaster :D You know the big steel/metal thing they use to get stuff they place out of the reach of hands of nasty little customers? Those. I'll take a pic like tomarrow.
