Do any of you remember the first installment of Driver from 1999? I spent a lot of time behind the wheel.....er keyboard. Ripping around San Francisco in that late 60's muscle car was the bomb, and apparently Ubisoft Reflections has recognized that San Fran was our favorite place to get it on.....no, not like that. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

Way cool, I played the old ancient one, and liked testdrive also.

I'd really like a "real" driving simulator, like following traffic laws driving around a city, lights, pedestrians and all, not as a game, but as a simulator for like drivers license tests, may sound boring to most of you, but it's something I've been looking after for long.

Oh was that game ever so f*ckin awesome. I also played for hours on end, running from the cops, and chasing the criminals as well. I played with the old microsoft force feedback Steering Wheel and Pedals back in the day.

Feeling the force feedback as I slammed into things, and then feeling the roar of the V8 through my speakers cranked up, as I slammed on the gas was the only way to play for me.

I miss those days...

Why don't you just go... drive?
It's a pretty convincing simulation!

as you know although this is a good game it will be a console port nonetheless. and you know what happens to console ports. LOTS OF BUGS.

Oddly enough - what I liked about the original Driver was the inherent graphical limitations of the time. The game looked like a sort of textured cardboard cutout city with prints of city stuff all over, I guess? It looked surreal to me, and that made it really fun. I know, it sounds weird. Oh well :p

As far as the trailer for the new one - I don't know - it kind of just looks like another GTA or something with a bigger focus on driving.

First I would need a car.
Second I would need a drivers license.
Third, a computer and a piece of software is somewhat cheaper than a car, gas, insurance.

Well, I probably would if I was rich like you. :(

But it could also be cool to have simulators from different parts of the world, learn how to follow their laws (how the different signs look), driving left or right side, so one could practice before going to India or Zimbabwe and rent a car.

That first game was great. It was a little bit like GTA, only about 99% driving.
I never could win that final mission either. There were these crazy FBI armored cars constantly coming out of nowhere. I must've tried it 100 times and never could finish it.

Driver was one of the first game I've played on my AMD K6-2 400MHz with a TNT2 Ultra. Shortly I upgraded to a Slot-A Athlon 1GHz.

You don't need to be rich to own a car?

That sounds like the least cool thing ever.

In Denmark you do ;)
Well, not stinking rich ofcourse, but it's pretty damn expensive, I cant afford it with my current income, there wouldnt be any money left for food and clothes :p

It was easy! All you had to do was not mess up. ever.

Was 234023532349% better than GTA at the time. GTA3 didn't come out for years after this, and the earlier ones were top down 2d games. GTA3 was pretty much a copy of driver2...(because you could get out the car in that)

He does have a point guys.

I grew up in Sweden, next door to Denmark. In the 80s whenever we took the ferry across and into Denmark our car - a rather average car by Swedish standards, a Volvo 740 station wagon - would get lots of attention as if it were some sort of fancy car.

As I recall the reason for cars being much more expensive there (as much as double in some cases) than just across the water in Sweden was due to heavy import duties and taxes. (Denmark has no domestic auto manufacturing.) I don't know if this is still the case today.

So, cars are more expensive in Sweden than they are in the U.S., and cars in Denmark at least were double as expensive as they were in Sweden.

That, and people actually have usable public transportation over there where we really don't here (unless you live in a very particular urban area, and even then its mediocre compared to European standards) so they don't really need cars as much as we do.

You might find this funny.

I remember when I first played GTA III. I got it from a friend of mine and I had no idea what the game was about. I remember getting in a car for the first time and I followed the other cars and stopped at the traffic lights so the cops wouldn't get me. Of course, it didn't take me long until I was killing hookers with reckless abandon. Of course, I do that in real life too.

I played the first 2 Driver games on a PS2. the only thing I didn't like about the first one is that you couldn't run over the pedestrians.

The Challenger R/T makes it more likely to win. If the engine sounds will be right. It was pretty good in the first TDU.

What an awesome game, killed a lot of time on that game with my PS2. Was super excited when Driver 2 came out. It was like watered-down GTA for households that didn't allow GTA (like mine lol.) And I remember trying to follow the traffic laws and keep to my lane, was a little hard.

Favorite part of Driver 2 was hijacking and driving a school bus. Oh, and San Francisco was freaking awesome speeding down hill, you could catch some major air.

i hear ya, i've looking for a "mow the lawn" simulator for a while now.

Can you get 98octane gas there? I mean, without traveling to a special station.

98 octane in Europe is the same as about 93 octane here, which is available at most gas stations at premium (except the few shitty ones that call 91 premium)

We use different methods to rate our fuels.

There are two primary ways to measure octane. RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number).

In Europe they go by RON. In the U.S we use the average of the two (RON + MON)/2 also known as AKI, anti knock index.

So the same fuel is given roughly a 4 - 5 higher octane rating in Europe than it is in the U.S.

Cars are expensive to own, maintain and operate. It might not be so to you, but I have different priorities.

I never said they weren't expensive. I said you don't need to be rich to own a car. My car cost me nearly $400 a month of payment plus $110 for insurance plus gas and maintenance. I'm certainly not rich, but I'm also not living hand to mouth.

Perhaps if you're living in Denmark as the guy I quoted does, you need quite a bit of money for cars, but not in the United States.

Why would you get a new car as your first car? You're going to hit crap with it, so get a nice cheap one. I wouldn't spend more than $3000 on a first car. After you've been driving a couple years, then get a nicer car.

lol what??? if you are a teenage girl maybe you'll go through a couple scrapes and bumps. Otherwise it doesnt take much to keep your car from getting smashed.

Could not agree more. Krotch and I don't always agree but here we do.

Your first car should - if not a beater - at least be an older car with cheap parts and one that doesn't matter too much when it gets scratches and bruises and has cheap tires for when you clip your first couple of curbs and rip the side walls.

Ideally, the first car should also be slow and boring to drive, to give you plenty of time learning to drive responsibly before getting behind the wheel of something fast and fun.

My first car was a $3000 Mercury Sable with ~$120k miles on it. It served me well through college.

Everyone, no matter how good they think they are at driving, winds up damaging their first car in one way or another.

And statistically speaking, girls are MUCH better drivers than boys.

Thats why young female drivers have insurance that costs less than half of what young male drivers have.

What kind of video is this? I only get an empty black box, but the other flash video on this site works..

Well I never banged up my first car nor do I feel drive any safer than when I had my first car.

And obviously that statistic has more to do with those bone heads driving like stunt drivers giving a bad name to all male drivers.

Well, it's a good day when you learn something useful. Thanks!

They need to check those statistics again, after the texting generation started. :p
Around here, it's pretty common to see a female teen in a brand new Escalade, texting away, while drifting into the lane to her left.
