DoubleSight DS-263N - 26"

That's not good, was anything touching that part of the monitor when you took it out of the box? Maybe try running it for a couple hours and see if it goes away.

Nothing touching it, and the box was completely intact. I ran it overnight, and everything is still there. I guess I'll see if DoubleSight will advance me a new one and pay for shipping back. If not, I'll send it back to buy.com.

Sure is annoying. I bought this monitor to replace a POS monitor that Samsung sent me to replace a good Samsung that died. Three strikes and counting....

Come to think of it, there was a large silica dessicant pack in the box. I'm not sure if it was on the top or sitting on the bottom of the box, where the screen faces. If someone at the factory put it at the bottom by mistake, I can see how it might touch the screen. The only other explanation is that the monitor got through QA like this, which would not say much for DS's QA.

Got a call from DoubleSight. They are going to send me a new one, as this one is "definitely defective." They gave me the option of sending mine first and waiting, or getting one from them and then sending mine back. I chose the latter, obviously. I do have to pay shipping to send mine back either way, though they are covering shipping of the new one to me.

I mentioned that it would be really nice if they provided me a shipping label for sending the bad one back. They said they don't do that--and suggested that I might be able to get buy.com to do that kind of thing. But I decided to work with DoubleSight on it because I was able to request that they power up and QA the one that they're about to send me, to check for this problem and any others. Assuming that they actually do it and I get a perfect monitor this time around, it's worth paying for shipping.

This is the second time that someone has reported a pretty positive experience with dealing with Doublesight's CS department, which is encouraging. Sorry to hear you'll be paying return shipping, but I think you're right that it's probably worth it if they fire the panel up first and check for any defects. Good luck.

Thats nice they are doing that for you. Sucks about shipping, but still. Sounds like good customer service.

UNLIKE Newegg.

Normally I have no problem with them. They have always been the best. Newegg used to have the best shipping deals around. Extremely fast. Not anymore. I still haven't received the monitor. Won't be receiving the monitor now it seems. Ordered on Tuesday. Was scheduled to be here On Friday. I am not available at all on the following Mon-Fri due to pharmacy school. Was told that Newegg shipped it out 2 days after they processed my card (was at step 5 for 2 days before it was shipped). So magically this morning they reschedule the delivery for Monday.

Now I am told they will attempt to deliver 3 times before it either goes back to Newegg or UPS decides to place a hold on it. AND according to Newegg, their new contract says they can't place a hold on any item. So my monitor is going to get bashed around 3 times, then going to get sent back and then rescheduled to be sent to me.

Is this a sign not to get the monitor? lol. Gonna have to ask for a refund I think.

I was going to go to Florida on Wednesday, but didn't because of this. Thanks Newegg.

We'll see. If I actually get a perfect monitor, I'll be happy. If the next one has issues, I'll be much less than happy, even though they were plenty nice on the phone.

I think it's safe to say that a 26" NEC would have arrived with no inexplicable defects, but I guess it's worth playing this game to save $700 or so.

Mine came in about a week ago and I'm extremely happy with it. Color rendition and brightness are excellent, viewing angles are great, the clarity is fantastic. Overall I'd say it's the best monitor I've used or even seen for any length of time.
I do have one of those NEC 20WMGX2s coming to use as my second display, but the DS will definitely be my main one for editing. I only want the 20 to have a nice display for use with my PS3 at the same time as the computer, and to have an image browser open at the same time as my editor.

Here's a picture of my DS-263N calibrated and playing "The Chronicles of Riddick" in 720P from a Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi DVD-player (with HD upconversion and processing). Pictures don't do it justice, it looks awesome in person.

Thank you, everybody, for bringing this monitor to my attention, as it looks awesome. I know there has been discussion about this, but I haven't seen a consensus opinion: where is the best place to buy this monitor? I'm primarily interested in easy returnability for dead/stuck pixels. If I can easily return it right to doublevision, then I guess the vendor doesn't matter, but if not I'd like to know the best place to buy it from. I see a lot of you are using newegg, but I thought they had a pretty bad monitor return policy? Thanks!

Well I just got mine from Newegg and it was the first time I had a negative experience with shipping. Usually they are really good, but now they have a "no hold" policy with UPS... so if you can't be at home on the delivery date, they hastle you over putting the package on hold at a UPS store.

Let me just say this about the monitor... First impression is WOW. Best looking picture I've ever seen on a computer monitor.

Positives

  • Banding isn't as drastic as I was expecting. PS3 looks great to me on 1080p.
  • I've looked for the white glow issue... I see nothing.
  • Best viewing angles that I have ever seen... comparable to top of the line Sony LCD TVs... Up and down isn't as good as left and right however.... BUT it still KILLS any TN panel out. I have to stand up to notice any change in the Up and Down viewing angle.
  • Larger without sacrifice to the pixel width... very slight increase in pixel width... still a smaller pixel width than some monitors I've owned that were supposedly "proper size" with respect to resolution. (Does that make sense? 1920x1200 is supposed to go with 24 inch for the standard, instead of 25.5).

Negatives

  • Banding isn't as drastic as I was expecting, BUT I have noticed it is in more locations than I thought I would... IE the start menu in vista... when you click it and on the right side where your name and the folder list is... the gradient in the back ground has very subtle banding. When I say drastic, I mean like how big the bands are... For the most part they seem to be very tiny... I've seen it in other dialog boxes which have gradients... but again they are very tiny... For graphic design this would probably be a bad thing. *UPDATE: I watched the Indiana Jones 4 trailer in 720p and the banding is MUCH more noticeable during scene fades... Looks pretty bad actually. Not enough to turn me against it, but still nasty looking. I then watched the Dark Knight Trailer in 1080p and I can still see it slightly during scene changes, but not nearly as bad. MUCH more acceptable. I still don't understand why banding occurs if the monitor is supposedly capable of rendering more colors than others, yet my older monitors didn't do that. REGARDLESS, unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, the banding seems to be better with higher resolution moving images.
  • Stand is worthless... manual says it has height adjustment... if it really does, I think I would end up putting my fingers through the monitor accidentally... Tilt works, but is very difficult. An aftermarket stand is a must buy if you want to adjust anything on the fly.
  • The purple glow that Toasty reported when using 1080p on the PS3 or a blu ray player is present... But you don't really notice it unless it is a black / darker screen... If the rest of the screen is brighter than the edges, then the edges looks more black... This hopefully will be fixed in a firmware update... can they do that through USB?
  • VERY Slight backlight bleed in the top right corner... not really in the corner itself, but on the top edge and the right edge leading into the corner... Overall, it's very little... MUCH less than other monitors that I've had... besides my SDM-HS95p which had the least of any I've seen. After coming from the FHD2400 however, this is perfect.

Haven't tested any games or anything yet... will let you know when I do.

So far so good... My favorite monitor yet.

I cant believe you dont see the white glow....... That was the first thing I noticed.......

Better not to see it though! :)

Maybe he doesn't watch his porn in a dark room?;)

Seriously though, way do so many people feel the need to keep their rooms that dark. Even consistently lighting is all that is needed not nightclub lighting.

All I can say is, I've turned off the lights and looked at bright screens, dark screens, solid black screens... no white glow from any angle.
The only slightly whiter area is the very slight back light bleed in the upper right corner....
UPDATE * Unfortunately it seems to get worse as the monitor heats up... I'll test it tomorrow to see if it is still as bad as it is now. Was barely noticeable earlier... now much more obvious.

Also, I noticed the slight greenish tint like everyone else said... but that can be fixed easily with an adjustment of the RGB on the monitor.
There is also one hot pixel... haven't seen any others so far...don't really want to look for them... cuz it'll just make me mad.

Besides the pixel being hot and the back light bleed in the top right, its a great monitor. I am probably in the top ten of the hardest to please individuals on this forum... and this monitor makes me happy!

I know I've read that Hot pixels can't be fixed with UDPixel, while stuck pixels can... but I don't understand why that is the case... Isn't a Hot pixel just the most extreme version of a stuck pixel? (hot meaning all 3 subpixels lit)

Just received my monitor last night. UPS dropped it off at my side door. Shipping from Newegg was quick as always (ordered Thursday afternoon, arrived Monday).

I am not a monitor guru but this seems to work for me. I don't watch movies on my PC all that I do is play PC games...mostly FPS (TF2, Crysis, etc...) and the general office stuff (web, outlook, etc...).

Yeah the stand is worthless but for $200 less than the Planar I knew that before I bought it. But once I get it positioned where I want it I set it and forget it.

I did a very quick check with UDPixel to look for stuck/dead pixels. Looks like I only have 1 stuck red pixel. It only shows up during the black screen check. However, I do have one concern. During that black screen check I have a "scratch" that shows up on the right hand side of the screen about 1 inch from the side. It is probably 1/4 inch long and about 1/32 inch wide. I didn't have time to take a picture but I will try tonight. Does anyone know what this might be? It seems to be inside the screen as I tried to gently clean it off. But it doesn't show up during any other color screen checks or when playing games, etc...Doesn't really bother me yet but want to know if it will only get worse?

W00t! :D

Got my replacement DS-263N today. No stuck pixels found using UDPixel and the "greenish" tint my last one had seems non-existent on this one. Only one minor gripe is some moderate backlight bleed in the upper right corner, but it's really not that bad, and much less then the one it's replacing.

One thing I did notice, however, my old monitor had no problem tilting downwards a bit to make the angle better, but this one feels like if I try to tilt it forward, it's going to break. :(

No biggie as I plan on replacing the mount anyway, but I find it weird.

All in all, I am now a 100% pleased Doublesight customer and would recommend this monitor to anyone lookins for a great picture, good size, and great cost! :D

So is newegg the best place to order these from, or are you guys using buy.com or amazon or somewhere else?

Well, the BLB looks less today, now that it is cooled down. It seems like it is a heating issue with the top right side of the monitor. If you get a chance, feel the BACK of your monitor, and let me know if yours gets really hot on the top right side as well (compared to the rest of the monitor).

The egg has really lousy monitor return policies unless you're confident in the manufacturers policy elsewhere is always better.

Agreed. Anything over 22" with them and you're screwed unless the manufacturer has a good warranty. I would definitely go elsewhere.

I am really interested in the monitor, though spending 700$ on a company I hardly know is something that's restricting me.

Hey M Diddy, did they send you a prepaid label to ship the other one back?

No label. I spoke with them about this last week and was told they pay shipping to you but not the return shipping back to them.

Don't let that stop you. For 700.00 you're getting a quality monitor and a good (not great) warranty. ;)

Nope it won't stop me...I already bought it. However, check out these photos. I might have to call DoubleSight for an exchange as well.

It looks like a "scratch" but only really shows up on a black screen. You can also see the stuck red pixel. Any ideas to fix this without sending it back?

Well I can't imbed images so just go look at this picasa album:

hi everyone i just got my ds-263n today!! does the back panel that covers the ports snap open?? seems like it's really hard to access those power/dvi sockets at the back. thanks

I would send it back. Looks like some pixels were damages during assembly. Just call them and start and RMA. Easy as pie! :D

I am considering buying this monitor now because its $250 cheaper than this dell, and I dont think the Dell is worth the money considering the issues. Where is the best place to purchase this?? hows buy.com return policy? or provantage?
