DOOM: The Dark Ages

"Making Doom more accessible than ever"

"for controller"

"any player can find their challenge"

Welp. id software is going the Blizard route: Sand down every edge, soften every bump and water down any spice, make it as easy and "plays itself" as possible.

The Dark Ages will probably be fine. There will be some kind of controversy about it when it launches, something to do with monetization or staff sentiment or something, but people will largely dismiss it as "Hey, give them the benefit of the doubt!"

But then it will get worse. The next game will be incredibly basic and watered down and double-down on everything that people didn't like about Dark Ages, and people will complain but ultimately still buy it.

The one after that will be irrelevant, NPC normies will buy it and it will be profitable, but like the mouse pressing the dopamine-button, id software will be slowly dying while it fulfils basic profitability.

This is the pattern I have seen time and time again. Look at any legendary, industry-leading studio that drifted into corporate profit addiction, they all follow the same pattern.

yup. but id hasnt been id for years.
ps: ill sheepishly admit i used a controller to play 2016, on my couch...

some yahoos are trying to make the female "slayer" an issue, not coming from "the usuals" as some put it though....

I beat 2016 on a controller on MY couch! on Ultraviolence, too!

Which goes to show.... It didn't NEED special treatment. nobody was complaining.

our point was that it was an already existing option and doesnt need the "Accessibility!!" spin. and that this isnt og id....

I tried playing Doom on a controller when it came out on PS or Xbox I don't remember. Yeah I was destroyed. Meanwhile on PC at one less than hardest was a great time. So yeah fuck controllers for fps games.

I got all the single player achievements on both the PS4 and XB1 versions of 2016. In both cases I used a controller with back paddles, though. Taking your thumb off the joystick to jump and do other things is the worst part about using a standard controller.

even when ray tracing was added to Doom Eternal it still ran with incredibly high frame rates thanks to Vulkan...I wonder if Dark Ages with even more RT will run just as well

Eternal just had ray traced reflections. The entire lighting system is ray traced in the version of id Tech 7 that Indiana Jones uses.

I don't think you will have to wait for the next game.

Chances are that the further dumbing down will come in a patch.

I agree. I just meant to hell with playing Doom on a pad. I tried it and it was horrible. Why anyone would want to play any fps with one is beyond me.

With 84 days to go, a Pre-Install seems a little ill-advised but I guess it's never too early for some!

I'm not going to pre-order but I think this is one of those games where it's safe to do so...using the Vulkan API usually means a very smooth gameplay experience which scales well on older hardware...the gameplay should at least be as good as Doom 2016 or Doom Eternal so no worries there either

I'm trying to figure out why Doom games are not scary anymore. I think they are made to look modern so when you glaze over the modern Doom it's all supplied to you to where you have nothing to fear. The animations are faster so your like wtf. Im just as fast as the AI in Doom. The pixelated art help make the original game scary.

Because especially since Doom 2016, it's all about you being the scariest thing in the room

Like literally lore wise

Doom 64 is actually amazing if you want old school doom and an actual horror vibe. It's super creepy. The OST is nightmare fuel.

I'm glad they moved away from the jump scares...Doom 3 had way too many cheap jump scares where an enemy just randomly appears behind you

Doom is incredibly scary... for the demons :p

I just wonder where they're going to go after this one. At the end of Eternal the Slayer is back in stasis, Davoth and the demons are dead, Hayden and the Maykrs are dead. Time for a new Quake game.

Obviously Doom Rebirth, Doom the Begining, The Doomining. The Doom of Doom. DOOMS DAY 1. etc.

While there´s money, there´s incentive.

I like what one of the previews I read said:

"So far, so DOOM. It's what you would expect, too, and my initial impression is that it brings the tight combat from DOOM Eternal to the tighter design of DOOM 2016"

The shield soaking up like 10% of the screen in the corner in videos is driving me crazy

Especially with some bigger weapons, almost the entire bottom of the screen is covered sometimes...

I hope the visibility is customizable

2016's design wasn't tighter than Eternal 's. The difference is that 2016 followed id's old design philosophy of the power fantasy than Eternal does. Eternal still has some of that, but they wanted combat to feel more rewarding, so you can't just run around Super Shotgunning everything away like 2016.

all those demo do use quite high end hardware, but it seem like it will run quite smoothly and under 2s loading .....

It is nice to see something like Nanite being implemented though it does not work on grass, the video points that out. It is good to see more engines use similar technology. IMO this is more impressive and visually beneficial and impactful to even gameplay than things like ray tracing.
