DOOM: The Dark Ages

You weren't forced to use any weapon against any enemy.

the only enemy I remember where I had to use a specific weapon against was Khan Maykr, where you needed to use that shotgun with the hook attached to it to bring her down and punch her in the face lol

In my mind, Doom eternal leaned WAAY too hard on the rock-paper-scissors "you have to use ever tool at your disposal or you're not doing it right" You don't feel like a legendary nightmare of demonic lore, you feel like a cracked-out chihuahua controlling WAY too many guns with waaaay to little ammo.

I much prefer 2016's "hey, here's a bunch of demons, and a bunch of guns." and slaps you on the ass and lets you go for your life. Wanna use your super-shotgun to just blow heads apart? go for it. You like the plasma rifle and it's spammy hitbox? awesome!

Also, Eternal was rediculously linear. There were no open sandbox zones that you could explore and unlock in your own order. Everything was a hallway or arena, you have point-A, point-B, and point-C, and don't even THINK about going from point-A to point-C without first doing the arenas and platforming in point-B.

Doom 2016 wasn't exactly Open-World, but it had some really open environments where it's just a big zone, a bunch of interconnected arenas, and 3 objectives: complete them however you want, in whatever order you want, from whatever angle you want.

That NEVER happened in Eternal, and it felt LESS like DOOM because of it.

That said, the art design of the weapons and demons were definitely two notches better in Eternal. I much prefer how the cyberdemon and mancubus look in Eternal.

The regular edition of Doom: The Dark Ages costs $79.99, while the Premium Edition is $109.99...wow PC prices have jumped another $10

No, it's not.

Looks like blocking and whatnot. Interesting, they claim you will play like a tank. Seems like the opposite of what Doom is about. I'm not against it, just an interesting change. Lots of melee to. The minimum requirements are quite high. 8 cores minimum? Guess those that thought a 7600X3D would be a more affordable way to get a good gaming CPU will be disappointed.

Hopefully 12GB of VRAM is okay for ultra settings at resolutions below 4K.

In that longer presentation video, they talk about the most comfortable way to play and stuff, using a console controller.

WTF

This is Doom a PC classic franchise, KEYBOARD + MOUSE ONLY folks, or should be designed #1 with K+M mostly, and a controller should just be an afterthought.

But playing like a tank needing extra buttons to press for blocking and charging. Ugh what are they doing to Doom? Swimming and climbing up walls and trapezing is not Doom.

Just make another 2016 type Doom with 2025 graphics.

I'm looking forward to it. I like how they're changing it up to keep it fresh instead of just rehashing the same game over and over again.

I may prefer this to 2016 in terms of gameplay. We'll have to wait and see. Though Doom was generally about being fast paced, so I can see the disappointment some may have.

looks like I read the wrong info on another site...
I read a post that it is €80, so that may have been what it was. That would make it cheaper than the US at base price though, wouldn't it? I think the USD and EUR are still exchanging at a rate of around 1:1, and the European price includes 20-25% tax.

Not sure I like what I’m seeing, sounds like they’ll be leaning toward even more unnecessary mechanics for the sake of change than they did with Eternal even, the opposite direction I’d hoped for.

I didn’t hate Eternal, but had no interest in a replay, one and done. I beat the 2016 campaign 5 or 6 times and still mess around with it from time to time, total classic for me.

Did they show any of that dragon (or whatever) riding stuff we saw from before?

Agreed.

I've replayed 2016 a ton of times, yet never even fully finished Eternal, because it felt like Super Mario Doom, and also the low ammo thing frustrated me. And I'm an original Doom player, used to play it on my Dad's PC in the mid 90's.

Dark Ages seems like it's made with gamepad controllers in mind first, before the classic keyboard + mouse it should be. Just give me a run and gun Doom game with lots of ammo and a Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.

And where the heck is a new Quake game? Thought id Software would be working on that after Eternal?

I remember the first time I played Doom. A buddy of mine had downloaded a leaked beta of it from a BBS in New Jersey the night before Thanksgiving 1993. As soon as I sat down to try it, I knew that PC gaming going forward would never be the same!

Been a long time, maybe it was lack of ammo, whatever it was I found myself switching guns way more than I wanted to compared to 2016.
You had to press R, F, or V to use a specific weapon on enemies to extract ammo and stuff. I also didn't like that mechanic, I often ran out of ammo.

looks like there's a lot of parrying required in this game...I love the Souls games but hate parrying...at least with Souls parrying is not required, here with Dark Ages the developers mentioned that it's required to beat certain enemies (multiple consecutive parry's)

looks pretty badass. the parry/blocking thing doesnt look like its a requirement like souls though.

I loved the movement in Doom Eternal...you had to constantly be on the move...the ammo/armor/health pickup system was great...you never ran out because the arenas were always filled with those fodder demons for easy kills...Eternal is one of the all-time greats as far as first person shooters...too bad id Software is going to slow things down a bit with Dark Ages...

Doom: The Dark Ages will focus on simplified, ergonomic controls: 'You shouldn't be fighting the controls, you should be fighting the bad guys'

The Dark Ages promises to be more grounded—not necessarily slower, but less reliant on acrobatics...
