Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

I just thought it would be nice to give credit where credit is due, but if you want to take credit for someone else's work, go right ahead :p.
I really don't understand what your trying to get at, it's not like he's saying he said it.

Nice work Crimson, will we be treated to a video of the blast doors opening too?

Okay, I will drop this, for the sake of the thread and the awsome work Crimson is doing here. I was just giving him a hard time, nothing more.

True, but we want a functional interface that will launch apps, video, etcetera within it ;) ..not just a background image
You might want to look at an HTPC "frontend" app. Something like myHTPC will let you create a skin for it and it's perfect for stats and app launching (thats it's purpose anyways ;) )
Stop on by the HTPC subforum and take a look around: http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=103

Yeah I have Beyond TV3 in my htpc--love it--maybe when BeyondMedia comes out it will have some potential in this mod ;)

ambitious [my idea] but, why not: -
(i) have a plexi glass covered 'lava river' going round the base/under the gantry way, which is either thick and glutinous, and closed. or more watery, and attached to a water cooled system.
(ii) have some figurines fighting on the walkway (some warhammer 40000 models would do)
(iii) some dead scientists bits/intestines/pools of blood mingled around rocks

I drew it. Duh. ;)

The attention to detail that you guys use in your mods is the level that I have for illustration and UI design. Right now, I'm upset because I'm using a font that's off. I'm just really nitpicky.

IN WHAT?????????????????

looks like a combo of photoshop cs and coreldraw whatevernumberthey'reuptonow.

Completely drawn in Flash MX. Long story...I was a traditional illustrator, then I got a job...all they had was a copy of Flash 4, so I learned how to draw in it. I have a hard time drawing in illustrator now, but can if I have to.

::wolf whistle::

that would be near impossible to do in coreldraw 9 without taking an entire day.

Wow, I just noticed that "we're" nearing 600,000 views on this thread....pretty damn cool if you ask me, deserves an honorable mention just for that. ;)

Oh wow hardcore - I though you cheated and did something with a screenshot maybe?

WHEW!! Ok all the basic engineering and construction on the LCD module/motorized blast door is finally complete. I've completed the roll up door and integrated all the parts of the LCD kit. The next step is to finish up the airbrushing/hand painting and mount the servo unit to operate the blast door.

here is the roll up blast door. It was constructed in segments, with each segment having its own bolt-type hinge, so its very flexible. The bolts are small steel rod inside plastic tubing, with a hing plate. there are 24 hinges in all. Each hinge can fit inside of a dime--so its pretty small. It operates similar to a store-front security gate:

Here you can see how flexible it is. Each segment had to be slightly smaller than the radius of the blast door tracks that it rides on.:

The door is inserted from the bottom of the track:

Here is the door in place. It still needs fine tuning and adjustment, but that will happen when the servo is installed:

Once the parts of the LCD kit are mounted in place, you will get a sense of the how this design works from a structural standpoint:

The section that holds the control panel for the LCD now has a hinged door to hide it:

Here i'm adding a detail strip to the top of the module. Details were scribed and cut from plastic and then mounted to the strip (in white) The strip is then glued to the top of the module. Creating a detail strip firt makes it easier to add small detail, rather than gluing them directly to the larger module itself. Also if ya screw up, you wont have to scrap glue off of a finished part :

Clamped in place for final test fit:

Then finally glued in place, and airbrushing is started:

More to come soon!

Crimson, I'm sorely disappointed... the door for the LCD control panel (hinged from the left) looks below the standard you have set for this awesome project. The hinge, and and necessary clearance space for movement, are easily visible and look amateurish (and we know you're no amateur!). Why not have it hinge down? Or better yet, have the cover held in place with Velcro. It's not going to be accessed that often is it? It's just tooo obvious in that position (front, dead-center).

It's not frigging done yet. Don't even talk about "standards" Gah..velcro--you deserve a noob-smack down for that one :D

themark, I had the same thought at first (just not as harshly put). But, if you want to get gritty about it, you could see it in the following 2 ways:

1) It's an industrial-style mod. In industry, rarely is any surface completely symmetrical or finished, so the gap in there is more true to life.

2) It isn't finished, and it's been a long time since an update has been posted. Be thankful, ya little maggot! All joking aside, being "sorely disappointed" in something that's already 4000 levels ahead of where we're at is a little, well, ungracious.

This guy has chosen to share this excellent mod with us. Respect, brother. Respect.

marko pogolo, you have a bit of learning to do yourself it seems. i would like to see you do a competing mod and have it turn out at least half as good. you ought to be ashamed of yourself for that one. i for one think some of the things he is doing are incredible.

and velcro is the worst idea ever. you musta got that one after bangin' yer head against the wall a bit much cuz it needs to win a st00pid prize or something.

tho your response to my challenge is likely to be a "no way" and a weak excuse, it still stands.

LoL!..whoa easy on the guy its all cool-- ;) I will have two hot girls in bikinis tongue kissing at all times in front of that door to completely distract people from the hinge.

will they be missing their heads? b/c we all know what the women in the Mars Station had happen to them...

Took a break from construction tonight and enjoyed some airbrushing. There is still a degree of weathering i have to do on it, and some drybrushing with silver to expose worn metal. Here is a mock-up of what i have so far:

Doom_2

The best way to hide a hinge is..you guessed it...with another hinge! I needed access to a mounting screw so i made this little flap:
