Finished pics?..We want to see it in progress so we can rip it to shit and make all sorts of suggestions on how you can make it better...c'mon...Ideas aint worth a damn here..action is. ;)
Touche' LOL
payback's a bitch :)

damn this is a really awesome mod, inspires me to go out and buy a dremel and mod my case

I think with a little tweaking this lighting for the logo will be really sweet. Here are a couple of early pics, remember that nothing is painted yet:

Looks nice. What's going to be painted out of that shot?

Painted out?..What I mean is that this part of the case is only primed with gray paint..i havent done the many many hours of detailed airbrushing and hand painting yet ;)

i think he meant "out of that shot, what is going to be painted?" like, are the spotlights going to be painted?

looks damn sweet like it is right now, even unpainted...

really explains a lot of this...

Crim - I think he means "What, in this picture, is going to be painted?" Anyways, that lighting setup looks sweet, even with nothing painted - will probably look completely kick-ass painted up and everything. and I think that the industrial-looking lights complement the rock pretty well, and seems to emulate a bare-bones facility look on a martian base. The only thing I would change would be to adjust it so that ring of light doesn't appear on the rocks next to the cd bay door. But I know you said it was a rough set-up, so I'm sure you'll tweak to perfection, as usual! ;) Great work!

edit: damn, clarification beaten like a rented mule.

Ohhh--ok I interpreted his question differently--answer: Everything! :p

Maybe I'll fashion some alum tubing into a snoot (focusing tube) to get rid of the light spill..I dunno...looks kinda "evil" hehehe

Yeah, it sort of has an evil thing going on, but more over, IMhumbleO, I think the light spill just looks sloppy. I'd leave the evil to your chainsaw temple inside of the airlock and the pentagram window. I think if the lighting just hits the Doom 3 logo, it will accentuate it much better, and draw more attention to it, rather than distract the eye away from the logo, thus making it less dramatic. Also, the details of the rocks would look better since there is no competition between the logo and the rocks. The eye would look at each individually, instead of both at the same time, thus appreciating each more fully

btw, i'm not an art scholar or anything, nor am I attempting to be. Just one lowly person't opinion ;)

You can just put heatshrink around the LED itself, then gradually cut off little rings of it untill you get just the right amount of light.

Added a little snoot to each light...Seems to focus it better...I like it!...Just about all I can do with it considering the angle of the mounted fixtures. The logo will really pop even more once painted..Looks kick ass if I say so myself =)

Man, you work fast!

Looks good, though I would try to focus the left one a bit more, maybe.

I feel like I'm being really critical, but I'm not trying to be! It looks really sweet!

hey its all good!...I appreciate the participation--

I will def have to play around once its painted..this gray primer doesnt do wonders for reflections and such--We'll revisit this part of the mod once its done :D

i agree... it could use a bit better balance between the two. and yeah it looks a good bit better like this... lights it up more and all.

just something to try: maybe aim the lights a little bit higher? i think that trying to center the pool of light would make it look better.

the reason it looks unbalanced is, if you'll notice, that the 'M' is further away from the right light than the 'D' is from the left, but as he said, it'll be tweaked later - you can't see shit with gray primer

also, I believe from the beginning he's been saying he wants to aim the light at the bottom of the logo, not light the whole thing...

Wow - I was at the point where like oh this is kickass - it cant get any better than this right? Wrong - you keep making it even MORE kickass. VERY awesome!!!

looking great as always and you continue to just amaze all of us....as for the position of the lights...why do they have to be symetrical? there is something to be said about being asymetrical

Been around awhile and have had the opportunity to see the logs for pretty much all of your work Crimson. Its great to see someone with such talent for art add that to their computer passion. Your creativity and imagination don't cease to amaze me. Great stuff.

About the angle of the lights:

Maybe you could try to light the logo from near the top of the "building" flood-light stile... Doh! I forgot you added the "catwalk," then maybe you could hang the lights from the botom of the catwalk. I guess you should do some testing. BTW are you 100% sure about the catwalk? it does seem kind of narrow, on the other hand that black "step" was just huge.

I think that the lights might look better attached to some part of the building and not sprouting from the rocks, but then again, the ilumination efect will be very different, your current lighting really brings out the 3-D work you did on the logo. Lighting it from the top may not make it stand out as much. Oh and i would swing the lights arround so that the big screw is somewhat hidden by the blue cylinder.

Lastly, what I think we are all trying to say with these "sugestions/criticisms" is that you have done such an awesome job so far that anything less than perfect will just not do.

The lighting is exactly how i want it, but I appreciate the suggestions! (take a look at how the lighting is in the logo--its lit from below--not above) Well sorry to disappoint, but this piece will not be "perfect" in any way...God I hope not . i never strive for perfection--in anything. To do so is foolish, because there is no such thing in life ;)

Some of you have been waiting to see how the touch screen LCD from www.earthlcd.com will be mounted--well here it is!--I started constructing the architectural piece that will house the LCD unit---complete with motorized blast/storm door.

Here is the part during framing. You can see the curved channels that the blast door will ride on when the button is pressed:

Blast Door 1

The LCD during test fitting:

Blast Door 2

Here's where it's mounted:

Blast Door 3

I printed a door on a piece of paper just to give an idea. The logo will be lighted when the door is closed, and turn off when it's raised:

Blast Door 4

Blast Door 5

Now you see I've started to "skin" the framed piece:

Blast Door 6

More to come soon!

Wow does Mr. Fluffy actually like this part!!!??? :p

LOL nice ninja-edit. ^^^

Yes, I like this part :) Would be cool if you could give the retractable LCD a little push, and it would go back in by itself, sort of like a CDROM. You're still going to use that one you showed us a video of a while back, right? Otherwise, I'm just not up to date, and that ain't cool...

Yah i used my powers of 'edit" instead of quote..my bad

yah that retractable LCD was a piece of shit and i sent it back to the man that sold it to me--I went with a touch screen from www.earthlcd.com instead--

oh my hotness... jesus christ man you are really pulling out all the stops here. The boot up sequence is gonna be so secsie!!!!!! really crim again very nice job. What i find most impressive about your work is your concepts. I mean the fabrication is impressive... but what is even more difficult is getting it right when picturing it in your head. Really BRILLIANT work. so i assume you will be slot loading a cd drive or something. and also what is your plan for power switches and stuff?

the best part about this entire mod, is that you have no idea where its going and the suprise factor each time is awesome. there's never a dull moment.

see, the other good thing is when it goes like a week w/o an update, and then its a HUGE UPDATE with like UBER AMAZING stuff that's:

h0ly c0w, taht 1s ub3r l337 d00d!!

lol, jkjk, but you, u always seem to give us more than we are expecting...you are the man! :p

hehe..hey thanks man..appreciate it. the Doom3 logo in the base unit is the drive door for the full sized CDROM--I know its a big worklog to take in!--

Door Open/Close

ack..power switches? Hmmm..I might just be controlling a lot of stuff from the interactive mouse pad/control unit I'm making later on--maybe I'll integrate the switches into that ;)

For the mouse pad I'm thinking of a tethered (but removable) "control station" with built in VFD display, buttons for sound effects, fingerprint security scanner and other goodies, including the second pentacle window. :D

Hey, I only don't like the base it stands on. I like everything from the base up, though. :D

awesome..you're the one person i love to disappoint!..i hope i can do more very soon!..the less you like about it...the better it's coming out! ;)

Well, it's not that I don't like your work on the base... It looks good. But, rather, I don't like the whole idea. By the way, you're still going to have the 2nd window, right?

Because, then I was thinking-- what would you etch in the other one? Another pentagram? Doesn't really make that much sense to have two of them... On the other hand, the damned souls background from Doom2 would be good to spread over two windows. But, meh..

first of all fluffy even if you dont like the base.... you have to respect the whole internals of it. the cd drive... the sliding hard drive cage.... the electrical wiring "hub"..... and second of all.... where is your worklog here on hardforum?

He could probably somehow manage to stuff those into the case itself. It's a big case.
