I disagree with those that say you shouldn't put the logo on there. If you are paying homage to the game, you might as well throw the logo in :) Keep up the good work bro, I love getting up in the morning and having new pictures to look at
 
It just seems to me that the logo itself is part of the whole "look and feel"--For instance the HL2 logo--is simply a highly stylized symbol and lettering--the Doom3 logo has the rich texture in it that is part of the entire look.

Hey Crim
First of, awsome work. Your craftsmanship is outstanding.

I was just looking through your photo thread and was wondering about the base you made. Is it just supported by the few sheets of styrene and the L-angles? I didn't think the stuff was that strong and rigid. Are there any worrys that it might flex or warp?
 
Nice man, I just checked back in after not watching the thread for awhile....and its too bad i hadn't been....those Doom letters kick ass man, every new little thing you give us a glimpse of astounds me. :)

EDIT: wow, over 500k views already......can we double it by the projects end people? :D
 
Except the radiator assembly. Not pretty, but I imagine nobody will be able to see it's ugly side anyway.

Must get back to hitting F5... :D :D

Well I did take a pic of me standing on the top section--it was created in much the same way the base is. Good engineering is what gives it strength, just a matter of knowing how to work the thin styrene sheets ;)

Back to the topic. Ok considering where the window is, there's no way you'll be able to see the radiator anyway. So who cares? Just to get a glimpse from it you'd have to position yourself above the case like so:

Yes but the radiator and interior components will be painted and finished regardless if you can see them or not. Work in progress remember?

That would have been a pretty good idea--except those letters are pretty small--I s'pose I could have made the center pieces clear and left unpainted lines clear for illumination---as they are now each letter took about 3-4 hours to get just right--you could have tripled that for clear+painted :eek:

The logo itself will be located on a rocky Martian outcrop of stones and terrain in the front of the base unit--the lower half of the logo will be lighted with yellow/amber spot style LEDs ;) Pics will come in a few days--promise

how small are they Crim? the pictures make them seem kinda largeish...can we have a comparison photo of the whole logo to say a cdrom bezel or something?
 
yea a frame of reference would be good so we have an idea of how big (or small in this case) they are....either a ruler or coin of the realm
 
havent followed this for a few days... you sir have some amazing artwork here. I only wish i had the skills, supplies, and time to put something like this together. Keep working hard on this man, I cannot wait to see the finished product...

Dremels are good for doorstops...or you could cut the cord, connect it to poles and hang laundry on it. But if you needed to get one, the MultiPro variable speed series are good. Cordless is crap. For a real rotary tool get a Foredom ..they are expensive but last a lifetime.

A good multi-use airbrush is the Paasche VL series. A Paasche Compressor Model D is a good companion to it.

Anything more heavy duty than say the S series motor is more for stone carving and serious grinding (I think its the H series) --I have the S series motor and 44T handpiece...I love it--

Dremel Pros :)

*Get's hot as hell after a short period
* Very low torque
*questionable motor life

Foredom Pros :)

*
* High torque (balls for cutting /grinding jobs)
*lightweight aluminum hand piece stays cooler
*Long life industrial grade motor (Foredom has been making these tools for like 70 years)
*Fits all the Dremel bits
*It's not plastic
* Dial speed control (table top base unit) or foot pedal control (the best)

Foredom Cons :(

*Pricey
* A bit less manueverable
* Slower speeds (RPMs)

I second the motion on the Fordom tools. I use one for porting and polishing and it's great for getting into spots my pneumatic die grinder can't reach or is too clumsy for. The torque is outstanding and being able to control RPM with a foot pedel is a godsend.
Give you guys an idea of the torque, the metal D ring that the motor hangs from on mine has gotten slightly bent over the years. Diamond cutters/jewelers also use these things.
 
Is it wise to buy one used? I can use a CC engine with a Handpiece like that. Its like 50 bucks. They say it kinda rattles but he thinks its cause he tested it with no bit. And it comes with a pedle. Should i go for it? I could also get a Foremen rip off for 50 bucks and its a 20,000 RPM that can be adjusted down to 500 RPM. And it comes with bascially the same handle that the other one does. It has a foot control as well. Should i get either? If so which one?

I got around to casting some rocks for the Martian landscape--then applied a little basecoat of paint. From images of Mars, looks to me like plenty of rusted soil and blackish/gray rocks poking out. Here I imagined bedrock, what the building would have been built on-...sort of an outcrop of blasted and machine cut stone. The sides of the base will be smoother terrain. You can also see the Doom3 logo, which is now part the optical drive bezel. I'll have small spotlights illuminating the bottom half of the logo eventually

A used one should be fine--as long as it isnt too trashed--its all about the motor. Personally I'd avoid look-a-likes.
 
That looks freaking great man, I think it's better then the one that Valve commissioned from Piloux!
 
I agree. Piloux's is cool but CrimsonSky has attention to detail that is unrivaled (sp?) IMHO. This thread has made me start thinking about alot of things, but I have no talent ouside of painting. I'd probably end up shooting the dang thing anyway from frustration!!
