Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

It's time to get the rest of the base covered in Martian terrain--but before I can do that, I have to create the stealthed-out bezel for the optical drive that is on the front of the base.

On the bezel will be none other than the Doom3 logo, faithfully recreated in styrene sheet plastic, painted and airbrushed complete with metal plating like the original. the logo will be "pillow embosed" into the Martian surface, and when the optical drive button is pressed it will travel with the tray.

Where's my lava lamp? I'm going to take it apart and put those chunks of red junk in a water cooling system! LOL, j/k

On a side note.... tube inside a tube with either the inner tube sealed with red stuff (easier) see diagram below

or possibly a tube spliced inside another tube so you can pump red stuff, inside of the cooling tube (in an enclosed separate tube) and it looks like its inside.

Similar Example: the old water spicket that goes up and looks like its floating in the middle of the air with water coming out of it

That's a good idea, albeit a difficult one to implement. Why not do the same idea but with the smaller tube filled with the red goop to just wrap around the tubes? You could put some red UV dye in it and have a pulstating light to make it seem like its throbbing.


On a side note, if you want cheap LEDs. I recommend www.LSDiodes.com . It where I get all of my diodes and at $0.45 for a 5mm Blue LED w/ $2 flat shipping for any amount of diodes, its really cheap.

They got 5mm Diodes, 3mm Diodes[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif], THC3, S-Flux, Luxeon Stars, Multi-Color and Surface mount. I want to get some S-flux LEDs to mod my tail lights into LEDs, just cause I can :D

some people mentionned vapor before... did you know about ultrasonic foggers?

if you put a water cooling system in, you could add such a fogger at the bottom of the reservoir so that the fog floats on top of the water...

here's a site that sells some of them, to give you an idea of what they look like and the effect they give

it would never work because a resevoir is a sealed unit.

Crimson, coming from someone who is accustomed to thinking "outside the box," I'm surprised at that statement! A reservoir doesn't HAVE to be a sealed unit. You could use a big tub of water with no top, and it would work just the same.

Not that that would make you want to use the man's suggestion, but I just wanted to point that out, maybe help open your mind for another project in the future, or who knows ! :D

Sure--and you could put wings on the resevoir and it would fly too. I'm just not about reinventing watercooling technology at this point. I dont think an open topped water tub will be at home in this project--- :D

agreed with the nice work part. however, ima have to disagree on the 'open reservoir' idea. i've used an open reservoir, and you get evaporation. in a closed computer case, that gets stuff wet and shorts things out. bad idea.

though it would be interesting to have the reservoir fly around over the top of the case. you could make it look like a demon or something so it would fit in:p

Good question!!--It wont be on the existing bezel, it will be mounted on an extension piece and then that piece is mounted to to the existing bezel. ;)

I guess you live in an area with 0% relative humidity eh? I'd like to see some kind of REAL evidence that an open reservoir could create enough evaporation to cause a WET condition on components in a computer with fans circulating fresh air through the case ;) I run 2 large swamp coolers to cool my home in the Vegas summer, and have no problems with water somehow accumulating in my computer.

Anyhow, I was just pointing out that an open rez is not a complete technological redesign, in fact many people use them succesfully. On top of that, the evaporation adds to the cooling capacity of the system. If you know anything about thermodynamics, you will understand that water absorbs a tremendous amount of energy when changing from a liquid to a gaseous state.

Anyhow, just wanted to add a bit of enlightenment, no need to start a flame war and go off topic.

Hmm.. I'm sure you've probably already accounted for this, but is the motor going to be strong enough to move the letters? how heavy are they? I've always been fearful of breaking my CD drives by putting things on them and burning out the motor. :D

The entire decorative extension piece will be lightweight, adding only an ounce or two. The drive motor and gears wont even know there is something attached. ;)

wow that plastic stuff must be really super lightweight...I was thinking it was heavy like ABS or something. ah well - I was about to suggest you could put it on "tracks" to make sure it doesn't pull down too hard but it doesn't seem like it would be a problem with the weight figure. nice ass work on the lettering....damn you're good :)

I bought one of these foggers to put in my res. In testing prior to installation, it did work in a sealed case. There is a problem with this. This thing introduces a good bit of heat into the water. This is compounded when the res is sealed and the water is not able to cool. I wound up not installing the fogger in my loop because of the amount of heat it would interject.

Just sitting on the counter in an open res with an ambient room temp of 74 degrees, the water in the res got to 102 degrees in 8 hours.
 
great work on those letters.

I think your goign to have to write a proper tutorial on making say the D :D

It would apply to an awfull lot of uses and I would definately like to see it done bit by bit.
 
I agree with the above post. I was also curious how you made the letters. Are they flat clay that you carved with a putty knife then molded the ridges for the puffy factor? If you have the time for a quick write up I would appreciate it.
 
My hat's off to you CrimsonSky! After reading/watching you and Mashie work on various mods I finally had the courage to mod my antec case so I could switch to water cooling & it was a disaster! ;) Just kidding! It came out ok and if I do 5000 more case I might even approach 10% of your skill level :D

I think I can speak for Mashie as well when i say that we hope people will start picking up a few tools and hacking up their cases as a result of the efforts we are showing with our own projects--Now its YOUR turn Derf to go out and share your experience with other modders as well and make them catch the modding bug---cheers

I just though of an idea... Well your case is gonna be friggin sweet the outside is gonna rock but if you fixed up the inside of your case to look like the inside of the station and put a small camera on a servo in there and feed that video to your moterized LCD. It would be like the security cameras in the game and add a new viewing perspective to the case. Just my thoughts.. my brain is always going 3125115 mph
 
To be completely honest- I don't think you should add 'Doom 3' to the case- it makes it more as a symbol of the game as opposed to the case being part of the Doom world... Maybe if it was just left to the visuals to identify it, it would be better.. Does anyone know what I mean?

Yep, I agree with you. If someone doesn't know what the case is part of without the name (i.e. the doom world), I'd doubt they'd get it even if it did have the name on it :)

I appreciate it--but I like the logo and I'm gonna keep it ;) It's not there to identify the case mod at all, but rather as part my experience with the game itself
