Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

Good deal, I was picturing the Leds/floods on the buildings just as mentioned, perhaps sweeping back/forth, in/out. Although I wonder about the sweeping's visual effectiveness.

I've been toying with the idea to incorporate some manner of sweeping mini-floods/laser led's like that, on my own time. However, I've nothing pertinent, theme-wise, to make them fit in.
I'll be watching to see how it turns out.

Don't stop the rock. :)

This is one sick mod, it blows the Half-life 2 ones out of this world.....good job dude, I wish I can think of things like that

I do too =\ but, at least we can view people doing this

So whats the ETA for completion?

And what are you going to do with it when you're done?

Ebay it? I could see an auction for it going SUPER HIGH!

John Carmack himself might have to buy it and use it to pimp the game at E3, etc. :)

Yeah I think that the guys over at ID would want to buy it to put in the corp. headquaters

I already made sure the guys at id Software are aware of it. Needless to say, they were blown away by the airlock doors just like the rest of us. I will keep them up to date for sure.

A true artist. While impressed with all of it including all the stuff I saw on your web site, I'm most impressed with your use of color in all your work. Outstanding paint work.

Hey Crimson

I only played Doom3 from start to finish once, but I dont remember seeing that pentagram shape...

IIRC iD used a modified Necronomicon symbol like this one:

I think that etching is a little out of place. I mean, you're making this "tech" case (as it could be no other considering it looks like it's made out of armor shards). And then you're making a theme within a theme and gothing it up. Maybe you should consider something else to etch; such as, I don't know-- circuitry? You know, the kind ID use on the Q3A cd-case. You could also use paint and etching to make old blood, or dust and stuff.... And besides, a drill isn't the tool to etch things. You should use a CnC, or at the very least a router bit in, say, a dremel?

Superbright LEDs tend to have a high lumens rating, but a very low viewing angle. I happen to own one or two, and if you happen to get into the viewing angle (which is about 20°) it's fucking blindingly bright. Otherwise, you can't see that it's on. Maybe instead you should go for some not-so-bright LEDs, but with a broader viewing angle??

Great work, CrimsonSky!!!

I have a question though...
The overall intent of this case seems to be sensory assault, and you appear to be making an extremely "busy" looking case. Aren't you doing the case a dis-service to have a single, large theme on the side panel (that of the pentagram)?

Maybe keep the busy theme going with the side being the side facade of a building with windows and moving elevators, etc., with a smaller pentagram only visible by peering into one of the windows?

Sorry, don't mean to nitpick such an awesome work of art! Just curious if you have plans to busy up the pentagram motif.

UPDATE: Oops, I mis-read you saying it was part of a small window on the side...sorry!

Who used a drill to etch that pentagram?. Looks like a Dremel to me. Look before you comment--yeesh I thought you were actually following along :p Gahh.. Wait until its a bit more finished looking--once the paint is on it will come together--what we are all seeing here is bits and pieces--I know its hard to imagine the finished project, but its all in my head and inside there it looks pretty coool. :D :D

Definitly very nice, but its something that stands alone. Cant really compare it to everything else given that this is so different, yet, amazing.

With that chuck it looks more like a drill. Either way, you should use a CnC.

Actually, I believe this
pentastic1.jpg

is the glyph they use (complete with DooM Marine, UCA logo and Dopefish.

While I agree that this is an EXCELLENT mod, I do think that the "plain" pentagram looks a little out of place. I would like to see one more like what was used in the game (maybe not to the crazy amount of detail that is in that thing, but less "normal" then what you did so far) but I am not going to tell you that you have to redo it (the window) or anything. Maybe you could modify a stage lighting gel and use that to project the image? I dunno. I'm sure whatever you end up with will be excellent. Keep up the great work!

And this one is used at www.doom3.com.

But technically that's Activision and not id (AFAIK) maintaining that site so... Anyway, I think either one would give the feel of the game a little better then the "normal" pentagram.

please note that I am in NO WAY trying to dimish the excellence of this mod. Just pitching in my $.02. Sorry if I sound (sounded) a little abrasive.

that site may be run by activision, but it also appears in the game and that's the symbol I was referring to... they modified the original Cthulhu Mythos one by changing a few lines in it.

I'm following this mod very closely. I love the look you are going for, it's very fitting with the D3 ambient atmosphere. And, yes, I was also blown away by the airlock doors on that. :D

Keep up the good work.

I would happily enhance the pentagram or make another one(forget the CnC machine, don't have one) with a design that is clear and can be laid out in a pattern. If anyone feels inclined to give it a shot in Illustrator or Photoshop that would be great...I'll use it in this project ;)

I thought you were referring the teleport pentagram that shows up under the monsters, which is the other one (with DooM marine, UAC logo, Dopefish... that I linked first). Sorry for the confusion.

The Marine is easy to see, but where is the UCA logo and the Dopefish supposed to be?

Oh and awesome work CrimsonSky.

How detailed do you want and/or how thin can the lines be in the pattern? I personally suck with photoshop / illustrator but it would be good to know for those that don't. Something more like the Activision DooM 3 site logo, or the in game crazy complicated one ;) ?

Well not to jack the thread... but

[Threadjack]
The UAC logo is above the Marine's head in the nook of the star. If you rotate the image (or your head, or your screen) so that the marine is looking at you straight on (instead of a a cockeyed angle) then move straight up to the corner of the biggest star you'll see it right before you hit the star (although the UAC logo will then be cockeyed). It's the old DooM 1/2 UAC logo not the newer one from DooM 3.

The Dopefish is right in the middle of the image inside the interior pentagon and is facing up towards the top of the image file (as it is oriented now), though that one is up for interpretation. Like I said, I suck with photoshop so maybe someone else can highlight them and start another thread if they want to discuss this more.

sorry, I couldn't resist...

well I have some really tiny carbide bits for the Dremel, however the pattern still has to be transferred, cut with an x-acto, painted on (or hand drawn) and scribed. ...so it obviously cant be laser-thin lines. The diameter of the existing pentagram is 4"

I'm sure Kyle can post this info / request (along with the reference images) on the main page and the photochoppers of the world should be able to come through with something.

Maybe you could have a pentagram with circuitry coming out of it?? Lemme freehand you one.
ok done where can i host an image?

scanner was being a bitch.

For real! Where is Mark?? (Photochop Gawd of the [H]!)

p.s. I have been following along the whole time, best job I have ever seen, my compliments to you!

Well I guess I'll have something extremely intricate laser-etched for that little window then ;) Will get back to this part of the mod when I know more.

Wow that looks laser-ready-- :p
Not to scale :p
Hmm comes to think of it. It should be 4:1.. or something. It's small, y'see...

But anyway, that box I drew it in is supposed to be the window.

How about this (Taken from the id image):

pentastic1.gif

I did it with Illustrator, so it is all line art, but undetailed at the moment.
Keith

Dropper, thats really excellent--what format do you have the art in??

edit: nevermind just saw the comment beneath it. I'll find out what format the laser peeps need the art in as soon as they get back to me.

With Illustrator, I think I can save it in multiple formats. Let me know if you want more detail, like the creature(s) inside with the horms (will take some time).

Keith

I could duplicate that into an autocad *.dwf if that makes it easier for the laser guys.

Why laser, just CnC it. As well use a plasma arch cutter to do this. Totally unnecessary precision/power whatever. Still overkill. And the laser people will most likely have to code it themselves, as the laser (also most likely) operates much like a CnC mill. So, you have to code in coordinates for circles, lines, etc, which in this case is, yes time consuming, but not difficult at all.
