Does Far Cry 2 ever get interesting?

well, i'm around 20-hours in and about 50% and i'm still hardcore hooked on this game - still not seeing what everyone's whining about. there's so much to do in here, it's really hard to get bored. sure there's a lot of driving, but even that is a lot of fun, and the scenery is amazing. this is the most addictive game i've played since oblivion, and i think i like it a lot better because 1) it uses modern weapons and 2) a much simpler rpg system. Better that stalker, 'cause it's nowhere near as buggy, and better than gta just 'cause it's an fps :p - none of the other comparisons i could make would really be applicable.

to the guy earlier who was saying the ballistics are too weak - i have to agree that it's a mixed bag in some cases, as the calibers of various guns don't seem to be accurately simulated (point blank, the silenced 9mm seems to work as well or better than the 50ae). i've been playing thru as a sniper, and almost every hit is incapacitating, then you just walk up and finish them off with the auto of your choice - works like a charm! you have to remember that in real life the recoil on full-autos makes them very inaccurate at longer distances - so the problem isn't that it takes too many rounds to put someone down, but that you're just wasting ammo and not hitting them. take time to aim first and fire in very short bursts.

See, that's a big part of the problem right there. When you think of Far Cry you think it's a FPS'er not a RPG. Far Cry 2 is Oblivion in modern day and in Africa. Most were expecting a shooter not a RPG.... :( I know I was....

I hate that they tied the Far Cry name to this. I understand that they wanted to create a totally autonomous game, but i feel the Far Cry name has now been ruined. I too am a bit upset that I spent the money on this game now. I am fine with the graphics. In fact it is nice to have a game with fairly decent graphics that runs well (at least it runs well for me, I see that others are having problems). The layout of the land and enemies do not bother me. What my problem is, I just don't care about any of the characters. The story is pretty much non-existent. If they had given me more of a reason to travel to point A to perform said task, then maybe I could sink my teeth into this game. I will play it a bit more but I am sure that I will eventually just stop without finishing it.

Oh yeah, I was worried about the DRM, but if the install limit is somewhere around.....oh I don't know, lets say one, I think I will be safe..

this is a good point. i spend damn near all of my time sniping, but according to my statistics my hit accuracy is ~25%. i must be missing a lot with automatic weapons cause i'm dead on with the sniper rifle (obviously). of course this also accounts for when i fire bursts in the general direction of enemies just so i can keep them at bay while i focus on other enemies in the area.

hehe - ya, i wasn't saying fc2 is really an rpg, tho it does have several rpg-ish elements. i wouldn't say this is oblivion w/ modern weapons (see fallout 3) as much as i'd say it's stalker without all the bugs and driving abilities. was mainly comparing it here to the other more addictive games i've played, since even tho i'm mostly an fps guy, most newer fps' are less than 10 hours of game-play.

Scratched my disk up and sent it back for a refund, saying it had been damaged in the post. Happy days.

Not even close. Maybe if it was more like Oblivion it would be less tedious, but it is absolutely NOT like Oblivion. It's like going for a walk in a giant field - full of hundreds of people that hate you - for absolutely no reason whatsoever, and then doing so over and over and over again.

^^ thats pretty lame, hope you get the game back again.

The game's bad enough to warrant it. There's no fucking way they're getting my money, and until a PC game returns system is implemented this is the only way I can ensure it.

Yeah, how did you know genius?

Probably because the review is moronic. It's a guess, take it for what you will.

I remember about a month or so back people were talking about how great this game was going to be. PC Gamer had awarded it a 94 in an early review and was already a given that it would be great. Someone else had said that they were going to wait because PC Gamer basically sells out on these AAA releases and weren't trustworthy. Well to make a long story short a bunch of people were pretty annoyed with that and defended PC Gamer.

I don't known that persons name but he\she was right. PC Gamer really sold out on this one. I mean do any of these reviewers actually play through the whole game? This game is a very, very average game with ZERO innovation. A couple of gun jamming and bullet wound\bandage animations is nothing more than a gimmick. This is just another average game from another average developer in Ubisoft. On a good day this game gets MAYBE a 78% from me. When I think of the clipping, repetitive missions, repeated headshots and enemies still don't die, the dreadfull AI and endless driving a 65% is more like it.

I'm sorry I rented this game and by rental I mean I bought the PC version. A total waste of $50. I don't know why I expected more from Ubisoft. I'm adding Ubisoft to my boycott list next to EA for publishing this crap and then sticking InSecuROM on it too boot..

Games like this and Fallout 3 will inevitably receive rave reviews from major gaming websites and magazines regardless of whether or not they actually merit it. I don't have Far Cry 2, but Fallout 3 is the bastard child of Oblivion and STALKER, and Oblivion and STALKER were both mediocre games at best.

I don't think half as many people are going to agree with you about Oblivion and STALKER, both of those games had rather large followings. We'll see how Fallout 3 goes... it definitely does have many similarities and unfortunately a lot of the same problems as Oblivion did...

You can't really compare those games to Far Cry 2 though.... I have a feeling this game is going to be dead and forgotten within 3 months, especially in judging from the responses of so many people who have played it.

Am I the only one that thinks the game has some retartedly long load times? Driving between areas I have to wait like over a minute for the next area to load. It makes it so frustrating ugh.

The respawning checkpoints wow...just horrible. It would make sense if they were re-manned after 3-4 hours game time at minimum. This is supposed to be the sticks it's not like the clans manning the posts would know instantly.

The malaria thing is so forced. Who came up with that idea?

this game sucks in every way...The only part that is fun at all is using the flame thrower to catch the woods or brush on fire and watch it spread.
Bad guys take soo many shots to kill, even head shots, I was actually being shot buy a bad guy the other day but he was pointing away from me and yet his bullets where hitting me as I stood behind him. They see you no matter what, the voice acting is like just one huge run on sentence. I cant tell if its ever directed at me or just another AI. How fun is it to shoot 3 guys then walk for like 20min or drive for 15min just to get in another battle. Then all you do is blow up trucks with ammo..WOW fun. I hope this game gets pirated on epic proportions so everyone loses money on this game for giving us a game that was soo hyped and tured out to be pure CRAP..i would rate it a 5/10

I have realized this game is great for wasting time.... and money. I decided to give it one more shot, and loaded into the game. did one mission, took me like an fucking HOUR!. I had to drive from here to there, from there to here, on my way to here i had to shoot some camps and steal their weapons, then on the way back from here to there i had to fight the same dudes again. If i tried skipping them, they would just chase after me.

the AI in Far Cry 2 is like an immature highschool girl who wants clothes from abercrombie and fitch and bitches to her parents non stop. YOU CANT ignore her because she will just be behind you, nagging and complaining until you turn around and say YES OK HERE HAVE IT!

its done, im now trying DEAD SPACE (LOVE IT!) and soon to try the new Brothers in Arms

To the contrary, this is exactly the type of forum where almost everyone will think that Oblivion was a mediocre followup to Morrowind because these people are enthusiasts, and Oblivion was watered down.

STALKER was a game that simply had too many flaws and was not a game where one played it to have fun in the traditional sense of the word. Clear Sky suffers from many of the same flaws.

Fallout has always been set in the post-apocalyptic scenario, so I'm not saying that it copied STALKER in that sense, quite the reverse is true. What I'm saying is that it plays like STALKER: the guns don't feel solid, the player is in a constant struggle for survival, you spend a lot of time in very dark tunnels with zombies and mutants running around making freaky noises in the background. Then as soon as you get out you follow a compass bearing in a beeline to where the next step of the main quest is (just like Oblivion).

Here is one of the most accurate reviews I've come across...for those that are still on the fence.

Not bad written but pretty poor review... First the story hasn´t been hyped the slightest. It has hardly been mentioned in the previews the focus has been on the fire and the assaults and open world.

Otherwise he tries to get a go on gaming mechanics that makes it easier for player but isn´t 100 % realistic but then he complaints about stuff that make it harder on the player but wants it less realistic to make it easier :D.

Imagine his frustration if you wouldn´t find any syringes or couldn´t heal out on a mission only in the safe houses for example... I don´t know if he understand what he asks for

I had a hell of a lot more fun playing Stalker and Clear Sky than either Far Cry 2 or Fallout 3

I fired up Farcry 1 after playing Farcry2 for an hour. Farcry 1 is just so fantastic up until just past the waterfall area. It was so nice to play a game that was vibrant and colorful. Farcry 1 really just kicks ass. Farcry 2 makes me cry.

For sure that review is right on. That review is kind of how I felt after playing Far Cry 2 around 3 hours in, sick to my stomach and just not interested in finishing it. That dude really stresses the bad parts of the game so I skipped to the last page, you know not wanting to have to relive it again.

Seems about right on the money. I hate this game in its current state. Hopefully there will be a mod out that corrects the major issues, ie respawning and tedious travel/driving and perhaps more than 1 mission at a time.

From that article this amused me

"It gives an amazing initial impression but soon kills you from inside. To tell the truth, the African setting in Far Cry 2 gives you a sense of virtual claustrophobia, you will feel sickened to be trapped in deserted African setting. One and only achievement of the Game. It truly makes you feel a part of something you will never get to witness and does it nearly perfectly and also the fire propagation, wow ! That's two awesome things Far Cry 2 gives us. Far Cry 2's opinion by many will be based on looks, it's like Paris Hilton, you love her looks until you know what lies beneath"

I bought this the day it came out and stopped playing it that week.

Open ended my ass. They made one boring section of Africa with tress, a few guard posts, and a safe house, and then just copied and pasted it 100 times. What's the point of making it open ended when you just want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible? There is no incentive to take a longer route because you'll see the exact same thing, only you'll get shot at more. I found myself not even caring as guards shot at me, I just drove past onto my mission, did what I needed to do and hightailed it out of there. A few blasts from the flamethrower took care of anyone trying to chase me.

Farcry 2: The Quest to Fix Radiator Mounts

ROFL this is the game to a T

i just finished it last night.....the ending BLOWS in my opinion.....i couldnt have been more disappointed

Also i remember seeing a video that said if you shoot a badguy in the leg his buddies will come running to him for help, when i do that they all unload on me and can hit me even though im sitting behind a rock

Can someone please tell me how to change the map size when you view it by pressing 5? I don't know how to zoom out on the map and it's really annoying.

Same here...stopped playing within the first few hours and its been uninstalled ever since. However, I just finished Dead Space and it was better than I was expecting it to be.

Boring game and bullshit SecureROM crap. I had to crack it just to be able to play. Would never finish the online check and failed to start. Oh wait, maybe SecureROM was trying to save me from something?

taking one of the BEST games in history (FC 1) and turning it into refried zebra shit = EPIC FAIL.

I was rather disappointed as well. Just finished it yesterday. I started to do a bunch of sidequests and then thought why? It's not even fun to do them. I got SO freaking sick of driving around and running into the same respawned BS all over the place. Gosh - it had so much potential too!!!!!!

I rather shove a horde of Trigens up my ass then play more of this peice of Gazelle shit.

From another thread;

1. As everyone has stated the immediate respawn of outposts or other areas w/ npc's is irritating as all hell.

2. As said above the ability of npc's to catch up to you in a vehicle immediately is rather ridiculous.

3. Inability to go "everywhere". I understand that you can't scale vertical rock ledges but there are many many many many places that you should be able to go but are unable to get to because of "invisible" walls.

4. When I shoot someone in the arm with a shotgun at point blank range they need to go down immediately, not necessarily die but not just stagger around and start firing again.

5. A rear view mirror would rock

6. I'm sure I've got a couple more but that's all that I can think of for now :p.

Bottom line:
I'm only 56% done I think and already have 26hrs of game time in. I am a big fan of mission oriented games so I am having a blast but there are a couple of things that really do irritate me. I really do enjoy this game and will probably spend another 24hrs finishing it.

I still enjoy the game, but the instant spawning and rubber-banding of enemies continues to perplex me. How the fuck does the game make it through play testing with these elements as they are? God damn this game would be so much more fun if I could spend five minutes without having to fight the same guys I fought five minutes ago.

It's like if Coca-Cola came with raisins in it. You think at some point before they put the stuff on the shelves someone in the company would be like "all we have to do is remove something and we'll have a much better product..."

I'm trying to look on the bright side...

Buy the game and RTFM

QFT. Obviously the lot of you are using a cracked copy. FYI FC2 multiplayer is a hoot.

If you've played this game legit on a good computer, tweaked to your liking, spent hours in both SP and MP there's NO WAY you'd classify this game as something 'epic fail'. Also, please excuse me while I go vomit from reading that hideous expression.
