Does Far Cry 2 ever get interesting?

You can fill another page with SixtyWattMan's posts in this thread.. Almost all of them are just flaming the hell out of Farcry 2... We get it man, you hate the game...If you hate it so damn much, why do you keep posting in this thread? Is it just to keep everyone informed daily about how much you hate it ?

OT I'm just over 70% completed. I'm definately loving my buddies if I die halfway to an objective, just wish I could bring them to the fight before I die. :p

What difficulty are you playing on? Also I'm curious, how many briefcases have you found?

This game is sooooooooo damn boring.
Why did i buy this game.. WHY?! Stupid me
*Smashes his head into wall*

i too was scratching my head for the first half hour as well wondering when this game would get better - here's what turned it around for me...

- better weapons... sniping definitely adds a whole new element as well as getting used to the weapons themselves. i'm coming from crysis and cod4 so it took a little time to shoot and kill without assault scopes and cloaking lol

- briefcases... cheesy game incentive but it adds a fun element

- properly using the transportation available to get around... cuz walking is no fun unless you have to sneak up on a site...

Yeah, last night it finally got fun for me. It's all about getting enough diamonds so that you can buy deadlier equipment. Now that I have the grenade launcher and flame thrower I'm pretty happy with the game. I'm 5.25hrs in, 12% complete.

If there were less patrols and checkpoints I think I would actually really like this game.

Played a bit more myself the other night. Once of the best FPS shooters out there, that is for sure. I am loving it.

I pretty much did the same. Since driving jeeps means you're constantly getting harassed - I adapted my play style and started using the buses constantly for large distances. I also find the boats are a great way to get around as well, as there seems to be fewer obstacles on water. Traveling by boat is also a great way to show off the gorgeous graphics and surroundings - seeing as you're not cramped up in a car looking through a dirty windshield.

But of course, in addition to those other mods of travel, I'm also finding myself walking more too -- which I can understand some of you not accepting. But I don't mind it. It's fun to stalk around through the foliage, and you can often times find some goodies when you travel off the beaten path. Until they nerf the enemy respawn times, I'm having a much better time by avoiding road travel.

Anyways, I'm a little over 20% complete and still thoroughly enjoying the game.

Couldn't disagree more. I suspect you are still well within "honeymoon afterglow."

I'd really love to know what folks' criteria are for glowing praise like this on this game. I'm jealous of you folks that are this happy with this game.

I WANT to feel this way about it but I simply can't.

Someone mentioned a while back that they "can't wait to see the Fallout 3 hate threads" and such. There are always haters for everything but I'll bet right now that I won't see the level of sheer hate in growing numbers directed against Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 haters will probably be people that hated Oblivion and some really old school purists Fallout fans who wouldn't be satisfied with anything past another 8 bit game anyways.

I KNOW before even firing it up that Fallout 3 will be a much better game overall than Far Cry 2 is.

Opinions differ. Nobody is going to convince you to like the game, especially if you don't. What is the point?

What is the point...I think that's the common theme to the whole thing like: What is the point in killing enemies and destroying entire areas when they literally re-spawn in your face ad infinitum, into eternity?

What is the point indeed...

I WANT to feel this way about it but I simply can't.

I think it really boils down to what type of gamer you are. The more goal, fast paced, and achievement oriented people probably won't get as much out of is as those who like more open ended, laid back, and free style gameplay.

I'm enjoying it thoroughly, but it does have it's problems. The AI is shoddy, the missions are repetitious (so far), and I don't like the fast respawn (hopefully a patch or mod will make it better). But I'm always taking it in slow chunks and not playing 6+hours at a time. I also enjoy breaking up the game play. I'll do a mission, then explore for a little while, then maybe do a side quest, then maybe go looking for diamonds, check out a point of interest, etc. I don't just do mission after mission, after mission. Right now I'm really just enjoying exploring the world and slowly watching the story unfold, maybe I just have too much patience. :p

Really? You are judging all every FPS that has come out in the past 10 years on this piece of shit? This is one of the worst games of all time. If you want a good FPS go try STALKER, HL2, or even Crysis FFS.

Yeah, i've been wrapped up in WOW, WC3, StarCraft for several years... I've got a thing for blizzard entertainment.:p

Easiest way to sum up this game would be GTA in Africa, and everyone hates you.

After reading a few posts, maybe I'll try using the bus stations more.

Question: How do I get back on track to kill the jackal. I'm only getting side quests done atm.

Overall, FC2 was a great concept, but mostly it's lots of poorly executed potential.

I wish the developers of crysis, oblivion, and FC2 would listen to the community about all of their downfalls, and then join forces to make a truly kick ass non-boring, non-linear RPG/FPS.

IMO the game is interesting to say the least. Not worth my $50 but i cant say i am 100% disapointed I mean this is a ubisoft game. the money doesnt bother me too much since i preordered waaaaay in advance with my stimulus check :p I am now trying to decide whether to get fallout3 or call of duty next. I am trying to get in on the call of duty MP beta so i can make my choice.

i think this is the problem with trying to be too non-linear. the story gets lost in everything else your trying to do. Then you have those assholes that apear out of no where and shoot up your truck while your minding your own buisness out in the african savannah. That i grew tired of and grabbed a trainer because i get tired of wiping out a gaurd post only to drive thru it again ten min later and get the shit shot out of me again. jesus christ DIE ALREADY.

all in all FC2 i give you a 5 out of 10.

You mean a truly kick ass non-boring, non-linear RPG/FPS in your eyes, right? Post your phone number, I'm sure they'll give you a call.

What they need is a freaking kill counter. My one-man army has slain hundreds by now. I'm a walking genocide

A kill counter in the statistics is conspicuously missing. It would give some point to constantly killing enemies and destroying checkpoints over and over again.

I take the buses if the next objective is in the corners of the map. But I will drive or boat otherwise. I will usually take and take care of a dune buggy because I like the speed. I will drive right through and ignore checkpoints if I can. If they start shooting me, I'll get out and give a 3 second burst of flame to their jeep and drive on again while they burn.

how exactly do you KNOW that? last week people were saying the same thing about FC2 in comparison to Crysis. opinions seem to have changed since FC2's release. i suggest reserving judgment and keeping expectations in check until you've had a chance to try the game.

"My one-man army has slain hundreds by now. I'm a walking genocide"...lmao this is some funny shit :D I agree a kill counter would be nice.

Just imagine if there were some neutral NPCs to round out the map. What if there was one family refusing to be driven out, and when you come across them at first, if you're friendly they have you in for dinner. Then later you could have a quest option to protect their homestead from the factions. I think part of my frustration is the game world is so ripe for RPG elements but it's just dead and there's no continuity.

Sorry if I ignore 99 % of the posts this thread is impossible to follow... In a sandbox title it makes perfect sense with respawning guarding posts to let you try different tactics. I mean look at it the other way... Say there is no respawns... You clear guarding posts and then it´s a sunday drive to the next objective all the time...

Carpe diem, sees the day you know? Take what comes at you and don´t try to speed run through it and you may indead see what it´s all about... You could try flight simulator as well. Don´t run missions just make a flight in a cessna 172... Take off fly around or to an airport and land... It has no objectives whatsoever for an action freak it´s pretty much only transportation ;)... For other trained simmers they actually see and do a lot of stuff.

Some games requires more imagination like this whereas other serve you like COD leave nothing to your imagination.

And others go the middle route like Crysis for example :)

lol... Seize the day but see the day works too. I am said not more notice the amazing environments, you notice new stuff all the time but if you don´t have your eyes open or have to much of a hurry you do miss much :)

For those that want more action ala Far Cry or Crysis they will of course not be happy with it but I love the pacing. It´s never hard to pick fights if you say so and you can avoid guiard posts with a little planning too... However if you are stressed you can´t enjoy it. Like MS flight simulator it ain´t for everyone :)

I agree with what others have posted. I LOVE the original Far Cry and preordered this based on that. Aside from the repetition which has been covered to death, here are some things that really bug me.

Grand Theft Auto Africa is right… the AI is horrible in this and reminds me of “Grand Theft Auto Miami”. I’m about 150 yards away sniping from the top of a hill into a guard station. There’s nothing but field between me and the bad guys but they just all come out and run at me full speed with their shotguns. The best thing is a near miss causes them to stop running and stand still for some reason.

I can’t even tell you how many times badguys have been crouched behind a barrel as I walk by, look at them, switch to knife and stab them with them not moving at all.

Yesterday I thought I had cleared out an area on a mission and I’m openly just walking around searching for a case. Right in front of me a badguy “crouch runs” from 2 feet away and then takes “cover” with his back to me. I’m just standing there out in the open so I walk up behind him and stab him.

Remember in the original Far Cry the crosshairs moved with your breathing and if you were taking a long shot you had to hold your breath? I just found out in Far Cry 2 I can WALK while zoomed in with the scope and hit exactly where the crosshairs are every time.

The knife is the worst weapon in the game, all you need to do is swing it anywhere near an enemy and it’s as if you set off a grenade. Everyone comes running. WTF is this all about?

Maybe I’m spoiled with Rainbow Six Vegas 2 since that was the last game I played the crap out of but these weapon models in Farcry 2 are pissing me off. Why are the weapons all left handed? Why is the bolt on the rifles on the wrong side? Why do you need to re-cock your weapon during a tactical reload and where the hell is the recoil?

Using the G3, a 7.62x51mm NATO weapon takes 4-5 solid chest shots to bring down a shirtless badguy but I can use this air powered “dart gun” to one shot one kill someone from 200 yards away with a perfectly straight ballistic path.

The caravans you attack just circle around the same area over and over and over again.

Man I could go on

I WANT A REFUND!!!

Lol. 9/10 rant. Not enough cursing. :D

I just wish the flipping game would run for more than 5 minutes without hard locking my computer. The last game to do this was Assassins Creed... another UBISoft game... unpossible!

All my drivers are up to date and everything else works 100%.. excepot Far Cry 2.. inconceivable!

About to uninstall this and sell it on Craigslist.

BTW, my CETME (G3/HK91) can turn a cinder block into 10 pieces with one round and put a 8" exit hole on a 12" pumpkin... yet in FC2 it takes 4/5 hits to even put him out?

Bother.

Damn great review brother, you speak it as it is. So much for all the hype.

Hehe the wife has toned me down. I don't cuss half as much as I want to anymore.

I also have a PTR-91 (HK-91 clone) and I got all excited that the G3 was all over the place.. yeah right.

It paints a VERY inaccurate weapon... which is the opposite of what it is. I can hit man size targets at 300m all day long, irons only.

It'd have been better if the guard posts were on a slower respawn time either once a game day or hell I'd be willing to settle for once every 12 game hours.

Wish they'd also made the cell phone more useful. Seriously, the buddy missions scream for this.

Also wish there was more to spend diamonds on than weapons and upgrade in relation to weapons. Why can't I purchase a specific vehicle or purchase upgrade for vehicles(the jeeps are damn near useless, let me mount a gun on the wrangler!)? Why can't I bribe people?

I was giddy with the game until the ending stretch just up and pissed me off. I'll probably get myself to go through another run in the future though. Its not like its an absolutely horrible game. Its just that some things could've been done better.

Game is not worth 50/60 bucks. Since I can't return it, Ubisoft owes me another game; and so shall I receive.

Hmm yes that was a pretty good rant J So.

But personally I think the game is great apart from the slightly too 'aware' AI and the overdriven emphasis on driving back and forth in vehicles. These two issues really wear you down and it's just too bad cause this game have the potential to score as a new fps classic. The graphics are outstanding, physics are while not as good as ubisoft promised, still very enjoyable. Music subtle and nice. I really like this african setting tho I'd still have liked to have more missions set in the desert..

About weapon effectivity issue, I know it's lame that a barechested guy will take 5-7 marikov shots to the chest before he falls, but you have to remember that they had to make the cheapest weapons suck ass to make it worth upgrading to better weapons. The "endgame" weapons are much more effective and fun.

YEs there are some disappointing issues but overall I think this game is alot better than too many people make it out to be on this forum. The game gives you a weak first impression, my advice is to hang on and keep in mind that the gameworld is twice as large as the land the map covers in ACT1.

Now go and actually play it dammit, unless you're a highlvl whiner like J So :p

Oh I'm playing it and I'll beat it but man.. it could have and should have been great.

I just wish I could get the game to run for more than 5 minutes without hard locking my computer.

I really don't want to reinstall windows to play a damn game... :(

I remember about a month or so back people were talking about how great this game was going to be. PC Gamer had awarded it a 94 in an early review and was already a given that it would be great. Someone else had said that they were going to wait because PC Gamer basically sells out on these AAA releases and weren't trustworthy. Well to make a long story short a bunch of people were pretty annoyed with that and defended PC Gamer.

I don't known that persons name but he\she was right. PC Gamer really sold out on this one. I mean do any of these reviewers actually play through the whole game? This game is a very, very average game with ZERO innovation. A couple of gun jamming and bullet wound\bandage animations is nothing more than a gimmick. This is just another average game from another average developer in Ubisoft. On a good day this game gets MAYBE a 78% from me. When I think of the clipping, repetitive missions, repeated headshots and enemies still don't die, the dreadfull AI and endless driving a 65% is more like it.

I'm sorry I rented this game and by rental I mean I bought the PC version. A total waste of $50. I don't know why I expected more from Ubisoft. I'm adding Ubisoft to my boycott list next to EA for publishing this crap and then sticking InSecuROM on it too boot..

LOL that's completely unfair.

Uninstall the game before you upgrade / reformat your rig and youll revoke the activation. If you follow this theres a very little chance youll use up your activations even after a phonecall.

And I'm quite sure enemies always dies with a clean headshot.

Damn some of you guys a really really spoiled and cheap :/

Agree especially about guard posts and cell phone... If I am in a tight spot I want to call in a buddy and explain from which direction to act as diversion. I don´t really want them in the missions stealing my kills though ;)

Some things could be done better but why diss a game because it´s not perfect. I have never ever played a game I haven´t found anything to nit pick on.

As for buying it because it was labelled Far Cry 2... Well if you expect Far Cry I surely understand the frustration. I read a lot of previews so I pretty much knew what was coming. And as mentioned Crysis is Far Cry 2 :)

FC2 was kinda like seeing the Cindy Margolis playboy spread. We waited years for it with great anticipation. Then we got it and it was kinda bland and didn't meet expectations which were so high. At the end of the day it was nice but few people running around saying "dude you gotta check this out."
