Does Far Cry 2 ever get interesting?

I'm a few hours into this game and it's so boring. The missions are all the same: go to X to kill Z, recieve call from A to kill Z in a different way; it's like an MMO. The story sucks, it takes way too long to get anywhere since the vehicles are so slow, and the AI always seem to know where I am no matter what I do. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I thought Crysis Warhead was a better game (from what I can tell so far). Does it ever get interesting?

Im playing it right now, i got everything set on very high, it looks pretty nice. Although i do agree with you 100%. It just doesnt have that "OMG I want to keep playing feel". Warhead did it for me, it was full of action! This one, just seems like a stalker/crysis wannabe.

Stab yourself with a syringe, get call, drive to spot, kill person, get diamonds, buy guns, get sick, pop a pill and repeat the process. I'm not too far into the game.... but come on? The intro was awesome with all the firefights but this is getting ridiculous.

The pacing of Far Cry 2 is definitely different. I'm about 40% of the way through, and the game does pick up quite a bit for awhile... but then it drops you down to boringland again. All the driving around you have to do is just tedious, especially when the checkpoint soldiers constantly respawn. Lame. I hope someone comes out with a mod to permanently kill those fuckers.

I think it's a fun game, but it's definitely not the same sort of non-stop action thrill ride that Warhead was. The pacing is just strange, but it's definitely more realistic. Far Cry 2 makes me actually fear death a little bit, whereas I couldn't give half a shit in Crysis, I would just reload.

It's definitely not a perfect game, and anyone who expects otherwise will be disappointed. I agree that it can be boring at times...

I don't think it's worse than Crysis, but I'm finding myself no more inclined to play it than I did Warhead, which I never finished. It's just sort of trundling about shooting people.

I ve got 2 complains about the game

1) Driving from point A to point B across the map is boring... there should be like mini placed that have a small story, found a meat packaging plant that had a kidnaped persone... sorta like that but a little more fleshed out would be awsome

2) Takes like 5 shots to a bare chest soldier... what the hell, one should drop him and have him moaning

Yeah I thought it'd be the new half-life after that awesome intro-drive. But having played about 2hours i've come to the same conclusion as you.

I was looking forward to wandering about in the desert/savannah, sneaking in on random banditcamps and moving on into the wilderness.. instead i get this driving around on roads in a car to get to the action and back to get a reward and having to sleep in houses and shit... this is not the game it should have been.

If they made it more densely-populated and eliminated vehicles I think it would be twice as good. Condensation of mission arcs would be good too, so that various factions focused on different regions.

Yep +1. Love the way the game looks but it's freaking boring. I have to say this game is hugely disappointing after all the hype.

The fact i bought this game makes me want to cry (or fall asleep) warhead was worth every penny and then some.

God, yeah. Shame you didn't work for Ubisoft at the time of inception! :D

I'm a bit confused as to why I can't start multiple missions at once, is there a way to do this? It seems anytime I want to start more than one, it wants to cancel the current mission. I don't see why this is, I should be able to go after a caravan of gun trucks while killing a subject on the way or something. And some of the traveling is just stupid, don't make the start point in part A and the mission objective the farther possible point away for from the intel or what not. Other than that, I'm having fun.

Welcome to Boringville. Population: Far Cry 2. I found more fun in trying to see how many people I could kill in the cease fire zone, then actually playing a few of the missions. Like you said, it's just plain boring. I think the last entertaining FPS I played was the beginning of HL2. Crysis had some decent moments too.

I was just checking out some screenshots again from the original far cry. Now that game had some color and style. I guess this game had to fit the boring look though and stick with brown everything.

Far Cry, now that was a great FPS.

Ubisoft had a great license with this game and turned it into a completely different game - muppets!

Here's hoping Fallout 3 doesn't fair similarly.

amen to that, with all the crashes ive been getting with far cry 2, ive been hoping that fallout 3's release date would get closer and closer, because yea, it's just plain not fun when i try to continue my game and have the game crash -.-

that and the missions/cars/getting around places is very boring.......

i usually take the bus to get close, then steal the car nearby to get to places...

all well, im going to have to go try out the MP i guess then.

I really wanted to like this game...the trailers and hype got my expectations up. However, I am going to have to agree its just plain monotonous and boring.

If it didn't have the Farcry name associated with it I think it would have been dismissed as a second rate game. There is absolutely zero that connects it with the original except the name on the box.

Half the time you run around with the fucking map open running from point A to point B. No cut scenes, no pacing, bad AI, no variety in enemies, okay graphics. This game is very underwhelming.

Hate to say it I had more fun playing Crysis and Warhead.

Ubisoft = epic fail :rolleyes:

[H]ard exclusive. I just got my hands on a screenshot from the upcoming 2012 release of Far Cry 3.

LOL. THAT'S FUCKING FUNNY. I just spent 20 minutes trying to like the game. The aspect ratio is weird, there's no story to speak of. They took the IP rights into the bathroom, shit in the toilet, and wiped their asses. The smear on the paper is FC2. It is a sad day. If you'd have told me 4 years ago that FC2 was going to be prettier, but so fundamentally different and flawed that it resembled nothing of the original, I would have smacked you. Now, I just want to smack myself. This game is horrid.

Nuff said. I stopped playing after an hour. Done with it. Call it "Safari" game.

agree 110%

I played through warhead twice.
I cant even push myself to finish FC2.

I am seriously trying to forget I just spent $50 on it. I can't believe I did.

I know this is sandbox gameplay, but its really fucking horrible when you do the same thing over and over again, just slightly tweaked.

Ill admit that the first hour was pretty fun. Put after that. Its the same thing over nad over again.

I got so bored i just took the bus to the end of the map and killed the jackal. Then I popped a malaria pill and collected a few diamonds on top of a house to buy a belt.

Here is hoping to fallout 3 being better... Why do I always buy the bad games.

It's a game I really want to like. The feel of the gunplay, driving, and the open world is incredible. But like you all said, waayyy too repetitive. It desperately needs more varying missions, and maybe a better fast travel system like Oblivion's (travel to any point you discover).

That sucks, what realism? I paid 50 bucks for it, was going to buy another copy for my son, but I think I'll just stick with one purchase since I can activate it on two pc's at once with no issues. I'll never play it online either so....

I will finish it though...but it certainly is NOT going to hurt my CoD4 online play too much.

i like Warhead better than FC2 also. I'm not that far into the game, but it certainly feels like I'll be doing the same thing for the next many hours.

is the mouse control a little weird to anyone? kinda sliding/sticking/smooth? even on the main menu with the cursor

Wow, I'm not sure if even one person came to the defense of this game yet in this thread. Looks like it will be a pass for me.

I don't know why I even read these threads, when my preorder from Amazon hasn't even gotten here yet...and now I'm already beginning to regret my purchase!!

Well, I'll determine for myself soon enough.

LOL refuse the package, I'm pissed I purchased it on Steam or it would be going back.

I've only just started, and I'm sure it will get repetive, but it seems like an awesome game to me. Sometimes I feel like PC gamers expect a little too much... Every game over the past 2 years always has a thread of how people are disappointed. It's kind of ridiculous sometimes. I know I'll just be focusing on the parts that I like about FC2 and not get all pissed if it's not perfect.

I can name a few games I liked that came out this past year so don't give me that "PC gamers are so elite" crap. Far Cry 2 is garbage. The missions are repetitive, the driving is boring, the enemies are dumb and respawn waaay too fast. To me, it just was not a fun game.

I don't think asking for a bit of variety is asking too much, especially considering how many games are out there that DO achieve this. Obvioulsy it can be done.

It's funny when people complain that it should be more like FC1, can you imagine the complaints if they'd brought back the trigens?

It's a pity the overall game doesn't build on it's strengths more like CoD4 did, because I love the feel of it, I actually really enjoy all the driving around and randomly exploring. It's like Test Drive Unlimited, but in Africa, and with gunfights instead of races... I could do without the random patrols and checkpoints every 100 yards, that's what riles me the most. It would be nice if there were npcs (outside of ceasefire zones) who were just going about their business and not intent on killing you. And a more Oblivion-style central storyline that you could dip in and out of would be good. Maybe that happens later, I'm not that far in.

But it looks great. FC1 looked like a cartoon, at least until you set it to the "improved" renderer or whatever it was called. Yeah everything in FC2 is brown, but it's a much better-looking brown than FC1's over-saturated green and blue. It's no Crysis, though.

Get back to us after a few more hours and see if you're still digging it.

I'd trust the people on these forums any day over those bullshit game review sites. Paid to give good reviews. Kane and Lynch anyone?

During the tuturial I thought the FC2 had a unique approach. After 2-3 hours I was completely bored. Some of the visuals were pretty well done, but I won't waste any more time with it. Just not grabbing my attention.

I finish the game... but I hated it from the start. The end sucked too.

(spoiler)
You die at the end.
