Does Far Cry 2 ever get interesting?

You didn't SERIOUSLY think Cote was going to win did you?

Hell no.. I just think the way the fight ended was pathetic.. I just fail to see how that little side step of his screwed his knee.. Also, I wanted to see Silva pound him out :D

I borrowed it from my generous colleague and gave it another shot today... Wow, I didn't realize how bad the voice acting was since the first time I played it we were listening to the stereo. I think fc2 is suffering for a distinct case of the sum being less than the whole of its parts.

Where is the depth/gameplay/fun factor? Don't get me wrong it's a decent shooter which could be a great shooter with a patch to fix the unreliable aiming and AI but will that make it any more fun? I think not; at least not for me. Imho the core game mechanic is just too flawed to overcome its shortcomings: it lacks the visceral satisfaction and variety of destruction present in gta or even crysis and it lacks the sense of progress and accomplishment after that initial play period.

Seriously, I felt like I was back in the Dragon Warrior days when every three steps was another random couple of slimes I had to kill. I mean what is the point if almost every mission is the same and the enemies respawn? After I got though playing 21 ways to kill a mercenary/convoy/1-800-henchmen clone, I found it rather pedantic and tired.

I was about to uninstall it when it hit me: It not a fps or even a game at all. It's a philosophical simulator not unlike the sims. Brilliant. You see the player is Garcin, Ubisoft is Inès, and the game is Estelle. Bravo, chaps, Bravo.

My new found appreciation for this pièce de résistance of modern art in hand, I am going to rush down to my local frys and promptly bronze it in its entirety after which I will place it upon my mantle for all to enjoy.

a blown ACL will floor anyone, no matter how tough you are. it's unfortunate the fight ended that way, but that's the way it goes sometimes. the Koshcheck vs Alves fight was good though. there were FC2 adverts all over the place during the fight :D

on topic to keep this thread from getting booted to GenMay: a gripe i have about this game is that you have to unlock the southern territory to unlock additional weapons. they shouldn't have made weapon unlocks contingent upon unlocking the southern territory. i want my damn AR-16.

I think people have built up FC2 to be far more than what it really is, which is an action based FPS. Lets get this straight, right off the bat, this is not an RPG, as much as you'd like it to be!

I'd like to address a few of the points people have made, the voice acting, it does feel a little sped up, but I actually appreciate this, you can get all the pointless waffle out of the way so you can get back out there and blow stuff up, in a more story orientated game it might matter, it's to the point, brief summary of mission objectives and you're done.
Accomplishment? Complete missions, earn diamonds, get larger more fun weapons, blow shit up. if you're after deep dynamics you'd expect from an RPG game, they're not here, this is not stalker-esque.
Travel, it's not that bad, dont like checkpoints? don't drive through them, go off road, go down roads without checkpoints, learn how to use the bus system to travel across the entire length of the map instantly.

I think more valid gripes are that enemies take way too many bullets to kill, between the large amount 10,000 hp enemies in some areas, guns jamming, needing to repair your limbs and take health packs it makes gunfights a bit too hectic. This is made 20x easier by staying at extreme range and picking off most people with the sniper rifle and picking off jeeps with rockets, or going for the mayhem route yourself, throwing as many grenades as possible, shooting everything exposive (barrels, jeeps etc) destroy all their cover and set them on fire, seems to work best, rather than cowering behind cover and being more passive.

I like FC2, I really wish they'd built the game with better (read: working) stealth elements so I can take my machette and silenced pistol to peoples heads without every enemy in a 50m radius being alerted, even in the pitch black where I can't see dick all but they clearly have bionic eyes with built in night vision.

Everything points towards head on full force tactics which work well and look fantastic, blowing shit up has never been so satisfying, so Im kinda abandoning my ideas of what I'd assume the game would be and sort of playing it the way it's obviously meant to be played, and having a lot of fun.

I disagree that Warhead was better than Far Cry 2, but that is just a matter of preference IMO. I enjoyed Warhead but felt it was was too short. Far Cry 2 I way better optimized (run the game at ultra high with 2x8800GTs, Not a bit of lag), and it also looks better than Warhead. I like the open nature of the game as I feel it adds more emmersion.

I can understand how hardcore FPSer's can get a little bored with the traveling and what not as it has no set paths (I personally love the freedom) and there isnt always constant action occuring.

It comes down to preference. I am a big RPG fan so the openess of the game appeals to me. All of the Halo fans out there might not like it as much though (good riddance).

I don't think anyone here wants or expects it to be an RPG. The problem is that It's not a pure FPS and it's not a RPG either, but it tries to be both and succeeds at neither.

How is it trying to be an RPG?

Please don't say " well the maps are large", it's "open world" in the sense that it's been designed to make you really feel like you're in africa which is a big place, but really all that means is it has large maps and therefore you need ample transport to get about the place, this doesn't make it any less FPS and anymore RPG.

You wouldn't say that HL2 is an RPG because you have driving sections, linear or not is irrelevent.

get a mission
complete mission
get another mission
complete mission
find diamonds
use diamonds to buy weapons
heck, you even have an inventory similar to an RPG, instead of pressing "I" to get to it, you have to go to your little warehouse.

Thosre are RPG elements, weather you want to believe it or not.

I wouldn't mind if it was a pure FPS and I wouldn't mind if it had RPG elements, but like I said, regardless of what it is, it doesn't do it well. You are of course, entitled to your own opinion. You're in the minority though.

Would I call HL2 RPG? No, but what does that prove besides absolutely nothing? Even if I considered it RPG, it is not relevant in the least. HL2 did what it did well, FC2 does not, and that's the whole point. The issue is not RPG or FPS, the issue is fun vs boring and FC2 is boring.

FC2 is not even slightly like an RPG, plenty of non-rpg games have defined missions structures, ways to aquire bigger and better guns, the safe house is nothing like a traditional inventory, it's simply a way to allow you access to all the other guns in the game while restricting what you can carry.

FC2 has none of the traditional RPG elements, if you think it's RPG like or trying to be RPG like, it's all in your mind.

HL2 not being an RPG proves that games can have elements similar to other genres but not actually belong to that genre, I think you missed the point there.

Anyhow I dont think FC2 is boring, I think it's action packed mayhem, in turn you are entitled to your opinion, but maybe you're not playing it right?

Meh, you don't get stats to level up, you don't level up... That's pretty NON-Rpg. The little I played seemed more like a GTA-style game in Africa... just without the hookers and blow

@ojax, lol, didn't mean to push your buttons. No, I don't keep up on all the video game threads, not many actually, just this one caught my interest because Far Cry 2 is the new game to play. And if you don't mind constant crashes, that's good for you, you have patience... I might too for a game I'm enjoying, but come on, you can't say it doesn't bug you, it annoys the crap out of me if that happens. Anyone play Gothic 3 when it came out?

You must be right, I suppose none of us are playing it right except you then. Read the thread, I'm not the only one who thinks it's boring. That's a pretty retarded statement.

you must play some BORING ass games if you think FC2 is action packed. shoot 3-4 guys at an outpost..drive, drive, or if your car gets blown up..walk for like 40min..then fight 3-4 more guys
Have them shoot you from soo far away and can never hide from them or never see where they are and they can shoot you even when you are behind rocks or on other side of a hill yet their bullets can still hit you..shoot multiple times in the head and dont die. makings of a great game there.

Actually I was going to raise this as another annoyance: not only is the voice acting phenomenally bad, but if you step away to look around out of boredom whilst they're talking, they don't keep speaking as in other games. You have to go back and start again, and there's no way to skip the chat either. I went to get a mission from one of the factions and there were two guys in a room, talking. I figured it was a pre-scripted event so I wandered around to look at the place while they droned, then when they finished went in to get my mission, at which point they kicked off the exact same conversation again. It turns out they'd been speaking to me before I even got close to the room, let alone inside it.

Also, I've seen nobody complain about the lack of RPG elements or style, simply that it's crap in its own right as a free-roaming FPS. I likened what I expected it to be to Oblivion, and said it would work better like that; if it was more populated and you could get multiple missions on the go and such, but that's not an RPG, that's just good design.

And at this point I will not trust anything game reviewers say.
The game deserves NO higher then a 6.5/10

Guess Im out of $50 :-/

I had a lot of faith in the game during pre-release.

Yeah I'm feeling more and more let down. I'm probably 2 hours into the game and the most fun thing I've done is jump off a 20ft cliff into a muddy pond. The graphics are awesome awesome on my rig, ultra max everything, even shadows, @ 16x12 with 2xAA. Looks very very good and runs in the high30's to low 60's. But it's getting so boring. And it says on the box its got 50 hours worth of game play?!?! 50 hours of THIS? It better get good soon. I'll give it another chance or two, once I've got my fill of Warhead.

This could be a prime example of a game with well done graphics but crappy crappy gameplay.

I'm glad I dont have as high standards as you people. :p

I've been playing for couple of hours now, done the training missions and then some, now I'm roaming for awhile.
Just found the safehouse with the hang glider, it was pretty cool, though I wish it was on a cliff or something, didn't get too far with it. Love sniping from like a mile away too. :)

Kane & Lynch ring a bell. Editor gives it a shitty review and he gets fired. It's called collusion. Don't trust professional game reviewers they are in bed with the publishers.

I don't really care if this game is trying to be an FPS or and RPG, it's boring. Whether it is one or another doesn't make it any less boring.

I havent tried it yet, but for those who have and found it dull as shit, whats you take on potential from user-made missions, etc.

Outlook is bleak. Pretty much the only type of mission available is "go somewhere / pick something up / kill someone"

and there are the same types of enemies through the whole game. At no point do they introduce new, or more varied enemies.

Far Cry 2 is a sandbox game with not very much sand in the box.

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/farcry2

Interestingly, according to metacritic the reviewers average score is 88% and the users average score is 69%.
In fact, the lowest score given by a professional reviewer is 70% which is higher than the users average.
Any theory?

The difference is that the reviewers are doing it for a living thus taking the score seriously by really going in depth in graphics, sound, design etc. etc. and I'm sure that if you do that, Far Cry is worth an 8x score after all. The average voter however, is probably just like "how much do I like this one.. oh yeah far cry 2 sucked balls i give it 6"

LOL right bud we all are just shitting on the game for the sake of complaining. Have you even played the game? No? Okay then...the game blows! Period! End of story.

This review pretty much nails it on the head.

I've put about 13 hours into it. Well, probably about seven and the rest are from me leaving the pc on in game at an arms dealer while I went out to work.

It really is just boring. You travel for 30 minutes and then shoot things for 45 seconds.

I am great at racing but poor at shooting... Maybe that explains why I travel for 3 minutes max and shoot in 10 minutes hiding behind a rock or running for my life laying fire barriers to cover my escape ;)... In fact I don´t even have to be in a hurry to get where I want in 3 minutes I just am focused and don´t hunt diamonds or clear guard posts or whatever during the way.

By foot it takes a bit longer of course but you pretty much choose yourself if you go by foot or by car. I am actually disappointed about the buses... It´s actually subway trains since everything go black when you use them. Would be so nice just sitting in the passenger seat see the landscape fly by knowing the busses is safe zones noone shoots them :)

I'm amazed that they polished some things as much as they did to immerse you like yanking out bullets and sliding into the machine gun on jeeps and have zebras running around yet they left out so many other key immersion factors.

The map is open, but it reminds me of WoW. Pockets of populated spots surrounded by empty scenery and some wildlife. It's an African nation in a civil war. Civil means its fought at home. Where are the villages and refugee camps? There are no African women or children anywhere. Even the cease fire zone only has men with guns and one priest. Don't even get me started on how you can't go prone and you can't lean. Why don't we ever see the opposing factions actually fighting?

Every mission sends you to the opposite side of the map. No wonder they call it 50 hours. They assume you do every mission and drive back and forth and back and forth fighting the same outposts and getting jumped by convoys. If you could have more than one mission at a time it might not be so bad. At least you could do several missions and make it worth the drive.

Surprisingly, I'm still enjoying the game in spite of all these seemingly glaring flaws. The gunfights are plenty of fun and I intend to get my $50 out of it.

Look on the bright side, the best part of this game has yet to come...... the Zero Punctuation review.

Ok, I thought I would try doing all the weapons merchant missions to unlock some new weapons. At least that gives me a reason to do the quests. Off I go... First quest, stop the competing gun merchant convoy. Cool! 2nd quest... stop the competing gun merchant convoy. Hmm.... odd. Seems the same as the first one. Must be a coincidence, since this was from a different merchant. Pick up 3rd gun merchant quest... Stop The Convoy. WTF?????????????? Is there ANYTHING creative in here at all??? Im guessing 4th quest will be something to do with a convoy... and stopping it.

Really getting bored with this game now.

I`m gonna delete this game from Steam. I can't play it any more. I have to give up on getting any value out of my purchase. It's just not fun. In Far Cry you fought in the jungle, snuck around huts, snuck around battleships and experimental labs, sniped guys, did some hang gliding, fought helicopters. Then there were the monsters, which were an unwanted deviation, but at least they were a deviation, ie: VARIETY.

In Far Cry 2 you drive around, get smashed by retarded AI, drive around some more, and get smashed some more. I'm not playing this moronic game any more. What a letdown. I`m gonna reinstall BF2 to play on my new 52" gaming display.

Nope they didnt, no demo, and i assume we can all come to the conclusion why.... I mean if they do release a demo what will they do? release the whole game?

drive somewhere, kill someone, get diamonds come back and get new weapons, then go to a different place to get a mission and BOOM demo ends...eerrr... i mean BOOM sums up the whole game.

a demo would only be the full game, shortened without cut scenes and new guns.

Finished it. 22.6 hrs. It is repetitive, and takes a LOT of patience to play, but some parts of it are fun. Combat is good. Sneaking around is fun. The openness is good. Lighting things on fire is fun. The story's bad.. at first. It gets better. The ending's.. very sad. I won't spoil why.

And then there's the bad: the campaign needs a LOT more polishing. It needs a LOT more variety. Guard posts need to be allies of you when you're working with one camp or another. Travel takes too long - adding maybe 20 bus stops around the map would help. Game feels like the same amount of time was put into the tutorial as the entire campaign.

My thoughts? As much as I'd hate to say it, Ubi should've been like 3drealms and released the game when it was done.

I hate to be the majority but yes this game is a complete snore. Makes me wonder what the critics were smoking when they reviewed this one. Sitting in my room alone, with the lights out. Yes that would be probably be more fun this game.

That's more fun than any game IMO. :p

I took it off my hard drive. The first hour was fun, then I realized that the rest of the time I had been playing really sucked. Lucky for me a freind let me borrow it while he was out of town. If I had paid money for this, I'd be hugely pissed. Absolutely nothing like the original FarCry.
