Does Far Cry 2 ever get interesting?

I'm downloading Far Cry 1 again from Direct2Drive... guess I'll give it another go :p

@LOCO LAPTOP, I would suggest you make that spoiler a little less easy to see or else some people might get a little upset.

I can name a few games I liked that came out this past year so don't give me that "PC gamers are so elite" crap. Far Cry 2 is garbage. The missions are repetitive, the driving is boring, the enemies are dumb and respawn waaay too fast. To me, it just was not a fun game.

Well there's mixed opinions on every game, but the general consensus on most major games has never been positive. I'm not trying to start a flame war, and by no means am I calling Far Cry 2 perfect or the best game ever or something. All I'm saying is I think it's a great step for PC gaming. It's one of the first games that has fairly well implemented an entirely open world. STALKER tried too, but that was worse than this IMO. Now if other games take note and the story and AI gets bumped to some other game's standards, imagine what we'll have on our hands. FC2 is just another piece of the puzzle.

Count me in as disappointed as well. I loved the original Farcry and the openness of it. I very much preferred the island setting and all the pretty colors as to the different shades of brown in FC2. Even though FC1 was linear it didn't feel that way, I don't know how many hours I wasted driving jeeps and boats around the island trying jump things and see if I could land them in a tree or some other stupid shit. I've played FC2 for about an hour and I don't know if I'll play any more. One more thing, the graphics are ok...but that's just it they're just "ok", maybe I haven't gotten in deep enough to show off all it has to offer, but I probably never will.

I played a couple hours but the repetitiveness really gets to me. Don't know if I'll even bother finishing it off.

Far Cry 2's world sucks. Basically what they did was they drew a system of towns, roads, and outposts and put mountains around all of it. Then along side off the roads they spammed trees, broken down cars, and if they were feeling giddy they put a puddle in the middle of the road.

If you want an open world go play Oblivion and you can learn what one is.

I just got back from a coworker's house where I played it for about thirty minutes. My short review: Graphics are good, the story sucks and fun factor decreases exponentially after twenty minutes. I'm glad I bought dead space instead.

I think its fun, to me its way more fun than Crysis ever was.

I installed it. Played it to 32%, and uninstalled it.

For sale on ebay it goes.

Pure letdown.

Unfortunately, have to agree 100%... and feel like I wasted $50, hands-down.

The most accurate way I can explain it, would be that it's an "open-world game that's extremely linear", due to the extremely lax gameplay. There's just simply not enough to do in all that open space, or even in the more "closed" spaces where there are actually characters and mission.

Looks good, but the characters are dead and lifeless. The gameplay is mediocre at best. It's literally doing the same things, in the same ways, every time you take a mission... extremely repetitive. As someone else has said, it takes more shots than it should to bring down a half-naked enemy. Though I was impressed with the hit detection (shoot a guy in the leg, he falls but doesn't die; he slowly gets up, limps away while reaching for his pistol... was impressed seeing such a thing). No "drive"... no "incentive"... the whole thing just feels dead, lifeless and don't feel as if you're actually "making progress" as you "progress". I'm not "nitpicking" either, it's just not put together well and have no "depth" from any perspective, regarding gameplay or otherwise.

I couldn't even finish it... total waste.

I think Fallout 3 will offer far more in terms of the "open-world RPG/FPS".

For the life of me i cant get into this game. Drive across map, do one stupid little thing, repeat. Its just...really really not fun. Talk about letdowns.

the devs know a game is monotonous and boring when they include a % completed stat. at least GTA/Bully/etc are monotonously fun kicking the shit outta people.

im almost 70% done. i'll probably finish it. i did this 70% in 4 days, the last 30 will probably take me a week.

i agree with absolutely everything in this thread except about FC1. i thought FC1 was merely OK. i enjoyed the awesome GFX, environment, and open world, but the gameplay, AI, and storyline were downright terrible. JUST LIKE FC2!

one cool thing about FC2 is the many different ways of killing people and blowing shit up. it's cool going all explosives with IEDs, semi-auto Grenade launcher, and mortar/RPG/RL. or run in guns blazing Quake or Unreal style with Mac10, MP5, and PKM/SAW. you can also go completely stealth with silenced makarov, mp5, and dart rifle. or finally completely ranged with M70 nade launcher, sniper rifle, and mortar.

i have to admit, the flame thrower is some of the most fun ive had killing mindless baddies since the grav gun.

The more I think about the problems with the game, the more I don't like it. But when I start it up and play, I am pretty happy. I've put in about 8 hours and I'm 20% through the game. I will probably finish it, but I am not happy that I spent that much money on a game with half of its advertised features broken, and the other half not even in the game at all.

Agree with OP 100%.

I'm 30% in and this is easily the worst open world game I've played in years. The guard respawns, insanely long drives to get to your missions, awful AI that's at times completely retarded and other times omniscient with perfect aim from miles away... every time I think about firing up this game, I'm reminded of those issues and play something else. I won't even get into the floaty mouse controls with forced acceleration. Whatever the case may be, it took me a few rounds of TF2 to unlearn the crappy aiming mechanics of FC2 and readjust to your typical PC game.

$50 down the crapper :( Wish I had bought Dead Space instead... live and learn.

I actually like the game. I like the story, the setting, the feel of the weapons, the rewards for doing buddy missions, and just how damn brutal it is.

it's a little boring, but it's less boring than i would be just sitting around all night complaining about stuff on internet forums like i usually do. oh wait...

I think I'll take reading internet forums!

To those that complete the game, I think you deserve a medal for patience and courage under extreme boredom.

Worst thing is this game will sell millions when it does not deserve the success.

I'm a few hours into this game and it's so boring. The missions are all the same: go to X to kill Z, recieve call from A to kill Z in a different way; it's like an MMO. The story sucks, it takes way too long to get anywhere since the vehicles are so slow, and the AI always seem to know where I am no matter what I do. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I thought Crysis Warhead was a better game (from what I can tell so far). Does it ever get interesting?

I was wondering the same thing when I was playing earlier today. I was totally blown away for the first two or three hours by the visuals, the setting, and the vibe, now I'm really really bored with it.

IMHO it blows Crysis away visually but man, the gameplay gets soooooo boring and repetitive...

Back to Dead Space for me!

Sigh, I really tried to like the game, but I can't just bring myself to play it any further. The graphics are good but after a few hours playing I started to get bored. Perhaps they'll adress some of those issues like spawning checkpoints in a patch, but until then I'll stop playing it.

lol, i was heaps pumped when i first starte dplay, an hour later it was repeating itself, 2 hours later i exited and went on to crysis (to try and finish it).

Yikes.. Well to be the absolute minority here, I fucking love the game. Everyone was spouting about how they loved the "sandbox" aspect of Crysis, when I argued it was just as linear as most games. Now when a truly open, "sandbox" game appears, everyone flames it for being boring...

What happened to the arguement that you gotta think ahead and plan your route? I've barely had to drive very far to an objective thanks to the BUS.. And I can avoid almost every checkpoint going offroad.. Coincidently, I've found a ton of diamonds way off the roads...

I know some have fucking downloaded the hacked copy, and I've heard there has been more errors and glitches compared to the legit copy.. Whatever, piracy is obviously tolerated around here, which upsets me, but what am I gonna do? ...

I just cannot understand why everyone is driving so much... On the first map, consider the town and the bar as your home point.. Get weapons at the bar, then accept a mission in town ( main mission ) and locate the objective. Or locate a side mission from buddies at the bar, or a elimination mission from the towers... I've never had to drive farther than I would consider too long... If I do have a longer route, chances are I can unlock a few soldier points.. whats 2 - 5 guys? Like 2 minutes max taking out the camp and unlocking the point...

On the second map, I had an objective at the furthest possible point from a bus stop.. However most of the trip could be taken off road in the desert, where I found 3 diamond locations on the way to the objective.

I might be in the minority, but I love being able to choose my next mission from anywhere, choosing to complete the main missions as much as the other side missions from buddies, towers, and weapon merchants.

I would absolutely agree with almost everyone here if the game lacked buses, and I had to drive / walk to every objective. I'm sometimes annoyed at having to kill enimies at points I've already captured, but I've found I can avoid most enemy locations by going off road...

I'm 58% completed with 17 side missions, 7 buddy missions... I've unlocked almost all the weapons, just the last 2 - 3 to unlock.. Main missions give the most diamonds, and upfront which is nice.. The assassin missions from the towers also pay decently.

I'm kinda bummed everyone is shitting on this game.. I crash every hour with no error, and have lost over 5 hours in gameplay, but I still keep loading the game right back up.. I have the steam version... vista 64.. Good thing I've become accustomed to hitting the autosave button... Although I bet my saved game folder is close to a gigabyte.. :p

Warhead is the better game. I'm currently playing through Warhead a second time, something I almost never do any more. Far Cry 2 Certainly has been a let-down to play for a few hours after the brilliant intro that seemed to show a truly living world. So far this has been one of the most repetitious games I've ever played. It's like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. For Assholes With No Taste. I particularly love the "open world" that feels like a goddamn rat maze.

I regret buying this game off Steam, because now there is no disc to smash in a ceremony of righteous destruction. What a fucking cocksuck.

This game is like fucking Space Invaders with all the patrols that constantly come along and attack you. It's just one wave after another of mindless enemies coming at you. I tried REALLY HARD to enjoy this game but every time I start to feel absorbed, another patrol comes along and smashes into my jeep the same way it happend ninety seconds ago. To me it feels like that's the whole game... smashy-patrol-shoot-fest, like BeachHead 2000 with the Dunia engine. Did they even playtest this fucking game?

I'm probably going to stop playing this game and hope that it either gets radically updated with a patch (good luck), or more realistically, someone out there figures out a way to turn off the random patrols. Just get rid of the constant enemy patrols who attack you on sight and it'd be a better game.

There is some underlying fun. The controls are certainly snappy. I've found that using buses and waterways leads to a lot less getting smashed by the AI patrols. Late last night when my eyes were drooping I finally got a mission that wasn't to attack a convoy. I'm gonna fire it up right now and see if I can't figure out a way to better avoid those patrols.

If this was a little more like Oblivion it would be so much better. That actually gave the feeling of being populated - you'd get cities, shops in every city, bandit camps, fauna, stuff that made it feel alive. The first time I played Oblivion I barely used fast travel because I liked wandering about discovering new places and finding things to do from the unlikeliest people. I expected FarCry2 to be the same.

Instead, you get a massive map, and a cool fire propogation system, and lovely sunshafts and such, but it's nearly desolate. The only interaction you get is with the checkpoints, which feel like someone went crazy with Photoshop's clone stamp tool and just whacked down the same fucking camp a hundred times over the map, but still took the time to ensure that they were far apart enough to be a bore going from one to the next.

I just did the first mission for the arms dealer, where you have to destroy a convoy. I reached the location, stood on a hill and tried to use my monocular to scout the place out, but it didn't achieve anything because it's just a stupid gimmick. I blew up some barrels and watched the fire spread a bit, burn itself out, shot at the convoy for a bit, but it escaped. Finally getting excited, I jumped into the nearest jeep, thinking it was about to get away. I roared after it, ploughing through a nearby checkpoint, trying desperately to reach the convoy to stop it. I had a hard time catching up to it because it was going full speed, but eventually I rammed into the side of the truck and pissed on it with the mounted MG. It just trundled away, and I grealised that I'd followed it full circle back to the initial attack point. The frigging convoy just drove in a big circuit around this point indefinitely, making it impossible for you to fail the mission.

Oh yeah, all the guys I killed about two minutes beforehand, and all the barrels I'd blown up: they'd all respawned. Everything was back to normal, even though I had hardly stepped out of sight of the damn depot.

I give up. I think I actually had more fun with Crysis, and that was a heap of spunk.

Dude... I don't know why you brought up piracy in this thread. I'm pretty sure every time that piracy is even hinted at on this forum people get basically yelled at, slapped around, made an example of, and possibly banned. What's more funny though is that you whine about how people are getting errors and glitches if they got a hacked copy, but then like 5 paragraphs away you mention how you crash every hour?!?! Good call! If people are crashing more with a cracked version, that's too bad, but a crash an hour with a legit copy and you are enjoying that? I think it's been said enough here that you must be a sucker for punishment to go back to a game like this and have it crash non-stop.

Has anyone mentioned the TERRIBAD voice acting?

Jesus christ they are all monotone, it's like they don't even breath because they never pause........they just keep reading, keep reading......

aside from the respawning checkpoints (console... how would an xbox360 maintain all the previous damage data of an open world as large as this) i've enjoyed my time with farcry 2.

this circle-jerk of swearing and anger is very funny though. ha ha, you wasted your monies.

This game is as boring as mercenaries 2 was, at least mercenaries 2 had destructible environments and a lot more action.

funny...i am holding out for more reviews from fellow [H]ders about this game and as more and more bad reviews show up, the more i am intrigued to get it and see if it is REALLY that bad...

hmmm.....

Umm actually, read a little closer and you will see lots admitting to pirating the game, and fucking excuse me for taking a stand against those who do it. Nobody is getting yelled at, slapped around, or banned... wtf have you not been reading some of these threads? Also, there are forum rules, but apparently they mean fuck all..

What's more funny though is that you whine about how people are getting errors and glitches if they got a hacked copy, but then like 5 paragraphs away you mention how you crash every hour?!?! I mentioned the problems with the hacked copy because some experience problems associated with the hacked copy, and fucking bitch and complain and write some bullshit 2 hour review ending with, uninstalled. I also never whined about people getting errors and glitches in the hacked copy... lol.. I also did not whine about crashing frequently... Fucking seriously learn2read.. I labelled it a slight annoyance if that and because of autosave, its almost not an issue... Surely something that will be patched, or perhaps its something with my computer..

But hey, fuck it, lets all be hypocritical fuckwads and post admitting to piracy in one thread, and bitch about DRM in another... Whatever..

the problem is the hype it seems... some seem to expect this to be a rpg not a fps... Since when was story crucial for a sandbox fps... Look at the original Far Cry.... It´s the gameplay that matters...

Also it´s Crytek that made Far Cry not Ubisoft... It´s al right that a new game studio makes their own version based on the strong points of Far Cry... Which was before the aliens though I actually liked the change of pace that included as well.

As a non stop action game for adrenaline junkies they will of course get bored... MTV generation and all but for those that are into flight sims, racing sims and can actually enjoy the environment the bigger environments are a plus not a minus. True more wild life to make it more living would been appreciated but still. You rarely have to take the same route back if you don´t want to. Of course since this is not a 5hour title but a 25h title you will probably come to a point when you seen it all but that´s life :)

It certainly wouldn´t been better if they quadrupled the number of guarding posts and bases and shrank the area 4 times then it would just be another action shooter I am afraid. If you don´t abuse the quicksave function in order to be time effective you get tons of intensive for playing it right instead of the jump in and reload gameplay.

^^ It's pretty much like you put a mind reading device on me and then wrote this. ;)

The only thing I'll disagree with you on is your harsh assessment of Crysis. Crysis and Crysis Warhead are definitely better games overall than this at present.

Far Cry 2 is going to need patches and especially mods up the wazoo. The potential is easily seen by all and it could be a hell of a game but at present? It feels incomplete and the super fast respawning just kills it for me.

I could see 12 hours of game time or so going by and maybe "reinforcements/replacements" come along to replace the guys you wipe out but the way it is now is completely unrealistic and takes away any incentive to do anything at all in game for me.

ojax, ease up on the f-bombs guy. Kids do read these forums, especially the gaming one. There are better and more intelligent ways of expressing yourself.

I rented this from blockbuster for 360, it's an ok game. I get pissed off a lot, enemies take a million shots to kill even headshots dont seem to drop them in one hit. Saving and loading takes quite a while too.

It will hold me over until tuesday, then I'll swap it for fallout 3. I got that monthly rental deal at blockbuster, gonna save me a bunch of money during all these holiday releases :p

Right, and that's the problem... the gameplay is completely lacking in this game. Hype is not the problem. There are plenty of games that are "under-hyped" that people end up loving to death due to the excellent gameplay. Even if people were expecting something different (though I cant imagine what) if they got good gameplay of any sort, you wouldn't see so many people unhappy with this title.

funny...i am holding out for more reviews from fellow [H]ders about this game and as more and more bad reviews show up, the more i am intrigued to get it and see if it is REALLY that bad...

hmmm.....

Look at all the responses... valid points being made, not just people "ranting" about why it's horrid. From a life-long gamer and someone with good taste, a keen eye for design and strong sense of aesthetics, I can tell you undoubtedly, this game really is as bad as people state, and as I've stated.

- Extremely poor implementation of confrontation that does become extraordinarily repetitive, as if the majority of the conflict is with the patrols that continually hound you.
- As I stated earlier, it's an "extremely linear open-world game", due to the fact that there's nothing to do in all that open space.
- There's no sense of purpose or accomplishment.
- The characters are lifeless and droll. Most of the lines spoken actually sound like they were rushed when recorded.
- No depth to the story (and yes, even an FPS or light RPG/FPS can have a friggin' story; Deus Ex, anyone?)

It has an extremely "dead" feel all around due to these reasons, and others, listed.

There is a difference between a truly open game that is SO boring that you wish it was linear and one that makes you want to actually explore your surroundings, like Oblivion did for me and many other gamers.

Exactly.

Has anyone mentioned the TERRIBAD voice acting?

Jesus christ they are all monotone, it's like they don't even breath because they never pause........they just keep reading, keep reading......

Already mentioned it earlier, but mentioning it again now... yes, it's almost horrifyingly monotonous.

Bottom line: while everyone has their own tastes, likes/dislikes etc., this is a bad game, period. I'm never one to just look at "what could have been done" with harsh scrutiny unless something is that lacking. I'd be perfectly content, as would others, if there were actually something to the game... a game that otherwise makes you feel as if you've been thrown into some random, meaningless world, doing random and meaningless things for random and meaningless reasons.

I really don't know what else can be said to get these points across.

It's one thing for a game to be purposely "mindless", for just some intense "shoot-em-up/blow-shit-up" enjoyment, when it's done right. It's another to try to make some appear to have more to it than there really is... more beneath the surface, but to end up having it's elements be only skin-deep... and in this case, just barely.

I wish i could return the game but stores dont take back open boxes.
I cant stand how the enemies can see you from like a mile away..then they can hit you no matter what even standing behind rocks, walls or on the other side of the hill..somehow their bullets keep hitting me. Then the voice acting in this game is stupid. its like I cant tell if they are talking to me or they are talking to themself and the talk is all fast forwarded sounding. Shooting badguys 3feet away takes multiple shots to the head. Then you are left to be killed if you try and help a buddy or try and heal yourself. You attempt to heal yourself only to be left wide open to take 3x more damage..then dead..You cant ever see the bad guys either till they shot you 5 or 6 times. I think the African land looks very nice but this game is sooo boring and sucks in soo many ways :(

Ahh you're right, I did kinda go overboard there... My apologies.. I got home late from the pub with some vodka anger... I was upset at how the Silva vs Cote turned out..
