Dishonored

Just when I thought Bethesda was the least douchey out of all the behemoth publishers.

Meh. All of those are just for pussies who can't play the game without an advantage to be honest. None of them are needed to enhance the game.

That said, still retarded.

It's up for preorder on steam now. "Pre-Purchase Now and receive Arx Fatalis for free plus an additional discount on the Quakecon Bundle!".

I'll wait.

To be honest, I think the hollywood actors do a pretty damn good job. Which makes it a little sad, that the others aren't quite so good.

I don't know why but so many people apparently suck at reading a script with the right emotion, even a little.

Hollywood actor performance isn't the complaint. The cost that they command is.

The concern here is: How much extra cost going to Hollywood talent might take away from the product itself?

If given a choice I'd much rather the costs all go to the product. There are plenty of awesome voice talents out there that don't cost near as much as a Christopher Plummer or a Susan Sarandon any day of the week.

I still think this is going to be a damned good game. Pretty much nothing is going to dimish my enthusiasm going into it but this load up of Hollywood talent and what that HAS to cost is of note and mild concern for me.

^heh, this comment concerns games completely unrelated, but had BioWare/EA put its money back into production instead of hiring Martin Sheen in ME2 and ME3, I think the overall products would have been even worse.

My point is that I think hiring Hollywood talent can go a long ways. Granted, the role Martin Sheen's character played was a major one and thus got maximum exposure. I'm not really sure Bethesda did that with the big Hollywood talent it paid for in Skyrim.

Squandered for the most part in Skyrim.

At least ME2 and 3 you could easily see that Sheen was well used and they got their money's worth.

Oh, I think so too. I'm hoping they give their investments a chance to shine in this game, similar to the way BioWare did in Mass Effect. Thankfully Bethesda isn't developing this title.

And anyway, it's weird that the voice work was squandered in Skyrim considering FO3 had pretty major actors voicing prominent characters. Bethesda should know how to get this right. The only thing anyone remembers from Skyrim is the annoying guard chatter LOL.

Let's everyone take a moment to pause and genuflect in gratitude on this point.

Exactly.

3 Dog, aoooo

A good example of annoying in Fallout 3. I usually made it a point to shut radios off in any area I was in.

Mainly because the ME series was like 80% dialogue. Other games it makes a lot less sense for.

How do you know that those are abilities for people who cant play the game? considering the game hasn't even been released, it is just as likely that they toned down and eliminated abilities from the game just to be able to do this.

This is definitely in my "$10 or less" pile now.

I just don't get why Bethseda usually hires these big "hollywood" names , the onyl reason is PR.

When it comes to actual voicoe acting, getting well known hollywood ACTORS (IE not voice actors) takes away from the game, because most people can't seperate them from their known actor/actress and the character they are voicing.

Real voice actors are great at being able to do multiple voices tot he point you won't realize it's them doing the voice, when they work you focus on the character they are playing, not the person behind the character voicing it.

When you heard Patrick Stewart or Sean Bean in TES Oblivion did you think about the character or did you go "Hey, that's Patrick freaking stewart!?"

I wish instead of blowing all their money on hiring big hollywood names so they can slap it on the box and generate PR, that they'd instead use that money on hiring a LOT of good VOICE ACTORS.

In both Oblivion and Skyrim Bethseda could have used sooooooooo much more voice work from more people/talented voice actors that can do multiple characters, instead you had many people that sounded exactly the same because they didn't.

If you can separate an actor from their character in a TV show or movie why can't you do the same for a game? There aren't a lot of good VAs. There are a handful of good VAs and even less great VAs. As long as the voice and tone are good I couldn't care less who is doing it. For a second or two I might go "Oh that's x person" after that I stop caring and focus on what they're saying.

What are you talking about? There's an ENTIRE industry of great voice actors, you do know that right?

Maurice LaMarche
Lani Minella
Rob Paulsen
Billy West
Tara Strong
Vic Mignogna
Mark Hamill
Phil LarMarr
John Di Maggio
Jim Cummings
Frank Welker
Peter Cullen
etc etc etc

Plenty of great talented voice actors out there that could easily do multiple voices and you can't even tell it's the same person, because they are actually GOOD at voice acting and don't just read the lines like most hollywood actors that act then do a voice role on the side.

As far as separating them, the thing is when you hear an actor voicing a character the reason it's harder to separate them is because unlike real voice actors, actors do not change their voice. They sound like >insert name< doing the voice, rather then becoming that character.

Jennifer Hale
Nolan North
Jesse Cox :)

I think the problem is that they probably get around the same money (recognized actor vs top voice talent), but many producers seems to go with "good enough and PR'able" vs "great but unknown to the public."

Sure doesn't take much around here with some of you. Unreal.

I define a great voice actor as one that has a very wide range to their voice and could do almost any role put in front of them.

Not for me. When I play Mass Effect 2 or 3 I don't hear Martin Sheen I hear the Illusive Man. Now something like Oblivion yeah it's Patrick Stewart but I have absolutely zero attachment to the story or any character in the game so there is nothing to draw me away from the person behind the voice. However it would be the same if it were something like Cullen or Paulson doing the voice. If it's all done well I don't hear the actor.

Dishonored kill improvisation video

http://kotaku.com/5933284/see--how-dishonored-will-let-you-improvise-some-really-cool-kills

For me the highlight was when the enemy fired the gun, the player stopped time, possessed the dude, moved him in front of the slow moving bullet, and whamo! Assisted suicide.

Fun video, though I have to say (and yes, perhaps I'm being picky) the animations/FX look rough around the edges. I'm still very excited for the release (preordered in fact), but the fidelity isn't exactly AAA...

Perhaps it's just that the footage is primarily from console sources? Or perhaps it's just the limitations of multi-platform, console-focused development..

Been a bit of both in terms of footage. Most of it console.

still looks mostly like a supernatural version of Assassin's Creed to me which takes place in City 17/Rapture

Dishonored system requirements revealed: render murderous masquerades on 4GB RAM

Tom Senior at 03:27pm August 14 2012

Dishonored is due to arrive on October 9 in the US, October 11 in Australia, and October 12 in Europe. That's when we'll get to jump into the town of Dunwall and begin an inventive murder spree in an an ominous old town designed by Half-Life 2 artist, Viktor Antonov. Years of pre-production research and design went into crafting that city, so it'd be nice to be able to see those dusty alleyways on maximum settings. Luckily, the Dishonored system requirements have been posted on the Dishonored Facebook page with a list of minimum and recommended specs. Here they are.

Minimum Spec:

OS: Windows Vista / Windows 7
Processor: 3.0 GHz dual core or better
Memory: 4 GB system RAM
Hard Disk Space: 9 GB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 512 MB video RAM or better (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850)
Sound: Windows compatible sound card

Recommended Spec:

OS: Windows Vista / Windows 7
Processor: 2.4 GHz quad core or better
Memory: 4 GB system RAM
Hard Disk Space: 9 GB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible with 768 MB video RAM or better (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5850)
