Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

Ahh, see now i'm begining to think i understand the mechanics of the game incorrectly. You know the "Damage" number in your character screen? This changes when you add attack speed (iirc). Is this not the number which is used in skill damage calculations where they say, "220% weapon damage"?

That's a tough call because you have to take speed into consideration. Spells are described to affect "weapon damage" which can be higher or lower than your bottom-line DPS due to weapon speeds unless it's 1.00. I guess you can divide your bottom-line dps by the weapon speed + any speed modifiers to see your average weapon damage.

edit: Go you the "details" section of your character inventory to see the bottom line "attacks per second."

Correct. Now where i get confused is when i equip an attack speed ring.

So say my DPS number is 200. If i use a move which does 100% weapon damage, it'll do 200 damage correct?

With the attack speed ring on, lets say that number goes to 220. If i use the same move, which deals 100% weapon damage, does it now do 220 in addition to being able to cast faster?

Also, thanks for the replies <3

See, i thought that just adding attack speed did increase the raw dps number... maybe i haven't tested this enough.

Dont confuse DPS with actual damage

200 dps

100 damage every .5 seconds

you get a 100% + weapon speed

you still do 100 damage just every .25 seconds

obviously my math is fail but you get the idea

It does increase dps, but not raw damage (I think i interpreted your words "raw damage" differently in my head). So if you do 200 damage 10% faster, you do more "dps," but your damage is still 200. I think I just read things wrong.

Thanks you two for edumacating me.

All this time i thought spells just took that damage number and used it. I'm glad to have another mechanic to think about!

No. A 220% mod for weapon damage only takes the number listed on the weapon itself. It isn't influenced by overall dps.

Yoshi pointed out something important too.. and that is weapon speed effects the spells your using he said arcane orb why would I want weapon speed and hes right you dont wanna cast arcane orb fast its expensive AP wise you just want to cast it twice and have it rape and pillage. so its definitely a mechanic to keep your eye on.. like I use a staff so I adjust my skills to take advantage of the slow weapon speed and high hits.. like arcane orb and meteor :D

Okay so let me take this a step further, just to be sure. If you have a 200 dps weapon with a top end of 100, but attacks twice a second, do spells use 100 or 200?

no wonder my meteor became weak shit out of nowhere, I swapped to a one-handed weapon and shield!! The one-hander had a higher dps, but lower top end.

someome doesn't understand DPS. dps means damage per second - not damage per attack.

"Top end" isn't the best way to describe it. It should be the "average" damage (say it does 0-200 damage, average 100 and has a weapon speed of 2.00). That said, your spells would be affected by the average 100 weapon damage, not the 200 DPS. You'll cast 2 weak attacks twice in a second as opposed to a strong attack once.

I did a non-scientific calculation and it may or may not match up. My DPS is 13528, weapon speed is 0.90. Therefore my average weapon damage is about 15031. Arcane Orb (runed) is 2.28x more damage, which is 34270 damage on average. This seems to match my observations, though not exactly) as my damage varies from 30k to 37k. Not enough data.

I perfectly well understand dps, thanks. This is the first game where they've simplified it to a "damage" number, and the first game where your spells are effected by weapon damage. If i were just swinging my mace at shit, it wouldn't be that complicated, would it?

I was wondering the same thing just yesterday. For primary (free) spells and continuous spells like Ray of Frost/Disentegrate, lower damage/higher speed is fine. But for one shot spells like Arcane Orb, Blizzard, Meteor, slower weapons with higher damage should be preferable, correct?

Particularly if I'm kiting and only launching one orb behind me as it is possible and not until I run out of AP.

Defeated Diablo on Nightmare difficulty on my witch doctor, lvl 50. Got the staff of herding recipe. Now to farm these super rare items to craft it heh.

Worth it.

Just got a 700 DPS one hander with int and dex from the inferno one last night.

(I am a mighty wizard!)

edit: 653 top end, 1.3 atk per sec

Got a 560 DPS weapon with to use once i hit 60. 2.5% life steal and 400 hp per hit.

Not the most amazing, but it should be enough to get me started in inferno. I found it on the AH for only 60k :)

Also bought an offhand 106-240 dmg, 70 int, 40vit, 50k. This should allow me to burn though the rest of hell tomorrow.

D3 updated, now crashes on startup every time

I assume you are using the DarkD3 shader mod?
Copy the DarkD3 files back into your Diablo III folder (overwrite them) and it should load properly again.

Is the AH sort of bork? I did couple of buy outs and send it to my stash but I only see one of it and it does show up on account history. Should I contact CS for help or did the item goto my other characterse?

How many hours do you guys have in the game?
I have around 20 and only have a level 27 dh and just started Act III on normal.

And people mentioning Nightmare and Inferno, does that mean you are playing the game through 2-3 times? Is everything the the same, just harder?

Same everything just a lot harder. It's not so much regular mobs but the elite mobs and blue mobs get insane.

Got to Act 4 last night on my Monk. Started playing with my Demon Hunter buddy, we make a good team. I act as his safety wall and he just fires away from the back. Also found my first legendary. It sucks, but it's slightly better than the helmet I was currently using. Plan to beat Act 4 (and ding 60) today and farm up some gear for Inferno.

The AH prices are not inflated. In fact, everyone's pretty much complaining about the exact opposite saying that item hunting is pointless since you can find so many good items for so cheap on the AH. Gosh, go figure.

This is very true. There is just so much out there in the Auction House that you can easily find gear for your current level for very cheap. I just turned level 40-42 and I got some decent stuff, not legendary but gold for around 5-10k each buyout. I'm at around 1000 intelligence right now.

This sounds like me and my friend! :D

Me lvl 54 monk and him lvl 54 DH. Now at act 2

I just got MoH - time of Need which helps both for resists. He's so soft when taking hits, I always have to heal him.. :D

Ugh, this game. Played til 4am soloing my way through inferno A1 on my monk. Didn't want to stop since I finally found an inferno build that worked for me.

Luckily after an inferno run you get super rich. Valor stacks were up for the whole duration. Best thing I found during that run were some rare boots that sold for 600k, score!

Any one got hacked yet? I just got Hacked like 20 mintues ago while I was online playing. Wiped out my high lvl toon and my stash in less then 5 mintues it took me to reset my password. Never been hacked and I have had wow since day 1. On hold with blizzard now yay lol And they bought them a new copy of WOW while they were at it on my account.

Authenticator?

My friend got "hacked" yesterday, I've never used an authenticatior before but I have one now. Blizzard claims they haven't been compromised but I dont believe them. Too many people I know with a very high understanding of IT security are getting "hacked".

Finally decided to start selling stuff in the action house and its pretty bad ass. Getting 100000 for an Item vs 1200 sounds like a good deal to me.

Not sure how that's relevant. Did your friend have an authenticator?

Heh, yep. I use the MoH that gives spirit as I have just given up on trying to save him. He dies one or twice per map due to things getting past me or mobs teleporting to him. It was completely opposite when I was playing WD and him as Wizard. He was the tank and I was the one who died all the time. :p

If an authenticator is needed, it should be free.

I think the one for smartphones is free, at least the iPhone version.
