Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

First time Diablo player. I couldnt get used to the always clicking where you want your guy to go but its growing on me. Great game btw.

Got my level 55 DH to 280% Crit Damage and 23% base crit when in caltrops, 25K frost arrow crits, I am just flying through Hell right now.

You don't have to spam, just click and hold. Same applies for attacks, and you can also use shift for that also if you don't want to move.

This isn't WOW... I don't have a very clear memory of how the tooltip worked in WOW, but most people that confuse this number in D3 seems to have been mislead by WOW's tooltip as far as I can tell from the sample of people on my friends list who got it backwards.

This is exactly correct, and i was confused at first too. In WoW your slow 2h crossbow would have like a 3.6 attack speed, meaning one attack ever 3.6 seconds or something.

But yea, the D3 way makes more sense =P

I've completely gone to using the move button, which i bound to w, instead of mouse. Saves my wrist that way lol

May I ask how? What items? I can't seem to get my total DPS/crit to above 24k.

I love it when Act 4 Inferno drops me a Lvl 50 helm, totally need that. Fucking lame! Took me 151 deaths, plus the 30 sec revive time and you drop me a blue level 50 helm, oh the rage

that's weird. It shouldn't be possible. In Hell whimsywhatever the lowest blue i got was around lvl 56...

Started a DH last night, got to level 33 in a couple hours. My friend (barb) and I were flying through everything since we are basically twinked out (if you consider twinked spending 20k in gear, heh). It's crazy that some of those low level legendaries are so cheap. Bought a crazy bow (for the level) for 15k, then got another one that I'll use in a few levels for 20k. Good thing is I'll be able to use some of my Monk's gear upon 60.

DH is pretty fun so far, though it's really too early for me to tell if I'll like it or not.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but it's pretty good. Diablo 3 Inferno Guide for Monks. Other classes should get a kick out of it too, though the video isn't entirely true. :D

My brother did the exact same thing with a WD.

Too bad he's back on his monk since it's still faster to farm on his Monk due to all the gear he's already accumulated.

On another note, they actually responded to this list: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5593230830?page=10#189

That's cool. Lots of sweet updates coming down the pipe. But really, what UI bloat is skill timers going to make??

I'd like the comparison tooltips should show every stat change, but i can understand that children would get overwhelmed.

One that i haven't seen mentioned, and that i'd personally love, is to have the skill tooltips on your bar actually show the damage the move will do based on your stats. That way, you could very easily see the difference in damage between two equal-dps weapons with different attack speed.

I think the "UI bloat" comment is a way of saying "we are Blizzard, we're lazy and we would rather have a gazillion patches then fix it all in one go!" They do this all the time with Starcraft, et al. They make gradual changes every few months and take the entire game offline (making it unplayable, usually for multiple games) and call it maintenance for 8 hours. You'd think for the amount of money Blizzard pulls in they could make a better sophisticated server array that doesn't have to be completely shut down for 8 hours to be updated.

Well of course they could... but that would cost them more monies *tear*

From a design standpoint I somewhat understand where they're coming from with the UI bloat, but making a modular UI seems to have made much more sense than what they have now from the beginning. Almost all of their reasoning is "our UI is not modular", so my question is: Why isn't it?

PoE does a great job showing "absorbtion" (energy shield) in the UI. No bloat needed. Some of that blue post = excuses. Some of the changes actually coming sound good.

First legendary dropped for me yesterday. Barbarian belt (Im a monk) oh well, identify and sell. But what are the stats? Not a single stat a barb would want. FML! the hunt continues.

Don't get too comfy using bait the trap for caltrops. Inferno requires way too much kiting for that rune to be useful for the most part.

Woooo! I finally finished Act 2 Inferno solo! Man I haven't felt that good in a long while.

edit: Also thanks Breath of the Dying for giving me that "ray of hope" by mentioning that you used the Archon. I felt like I would've never passed phase 2 of the boss fight without using it.

You've obviously never worked for a software company. This is an efficient way to release a continuous stream of content/fixes while also mitigating the risk of introducing too many bugs/issues at once.

Sure, large content patches are great but they also ultimately come with greater risk.

Yeah, after playing BF3 and experiencing their patches, I would way rather have many smaller patches that fix things quicker (like Blizzard does) than have a large patch breaking other things and having to wait months for another big patch only to have more bugs.

Played Diablo 1 quite a bit, even legitly found a Ring Of The Zodiac a few times.
Played Diablo 2 relatively hardcore for 9 years (last time I played was a few months ago during a previous ladder)
Played Starcraft so much I memorized my CD Key, used to get up at 4 am in the morning 2 hours before school just to play it
Played Warcraft 3 tons, favorite player is Grubby, go orcs.
Played World of Warcraft quite alot, 5 85s, been playing on and off since 2004. Experienced all the expansions and most end game content. Got rank 12 (14 was too much effort) during vanilla's cruel pvp honor system

Played Diablo 3. Completely disappointed. In the process of getting a refund, this is pretty unfortunate and Blizzard has really fallin from what it once was. Can't believe I'm asking for a refund from my all time favorite gaming company, something is seriously going wrong with them internally.

Do you actually state the reasons you're disappointed anywhere?

Do you actually state the reasons you're disappointed anywhere?

In the refund form? Nah. There's only a 2000 character limit. Not worth the effort typing it all out anyways over and over. Here's some directly from here that I typed up previously though.

Just hit 60, kind of annoyed at all the stuff that's been simply scrapped from the game.

-So many item suffixes/prefixes have been removed.
-The different types of elemental damage on weapons aren't actually differen't at all in function, they just look different. Gone are the days of poison over time, or low min-high max damage of lightning.
-There's no such thing as light or heavy armor, everyone wears everything
-Stats are distributed in a homogenized manner, there isn't any out of the ordinary "Wow!" niche items, like the goldfind% seems capped extremely low somewher around 15% per item, whereas in Diablo 2 a single item like the armor "Wealth" had +300% additional gold find which opened up "gold find" builds. This type of stuff is what made D2 have replay value.
-There's no such thing as individual characters, everyone can be anything at the click of the button. This means there's no replayability in trying a differnent "build" of the same class. One class of each is all you'll ever need. More replay value gone.
-Everyone's abilities is based off weapon damage, so wizards walk around with 2 handed axes with +intellect.
-Boss drops aren't truly random, every single time you kill a boss with 5 stacks of Nephalem Valor you get 2-3 rares and 6+ magicals. Every. Single. Time.
-Inferno is ridiculous at Hell gear levels
-Legendary items have lost their identity and don't truly stand out from the pack. Similar to uniques in vanilla Diablo 2, where rares were better. This was fixed when LOD came out.
-There's all kinds of "social" additions (banners, achievements, etc) but the Battle.net 2.0 lobby interface makes it seem like there's no community at all. Battle.net 2.0 is so shitty
-Due to the design and camera, it feels too much like a corridor RPG
-You can join anyone on any act if they are on your friends list, even if you didn't complete previous acts
-Art assets are recycled wholesale from WoW, the Demon Hunter's "Boar Companion" is a WoW model/animation, and the spiders are WoW model/animations.
-Act 1 and 2 seem decent, Act 3 and Act 4 seem somewhat rushed, especially Act 4.
-All the weapons sound the same when using attacking abilities. The Barbarians "Cleave" sounds the same when I have a sword and when I have a maul equipped.
-All kinds of problems with the auction interface, you can't sell something that isn't repaired, and you can't repair something that is in your stash unless you take it out. The auction house is also very laggy
-Due to the way the game is designed, hardcore is COMPLETELY impractical, especially Hell and Inferno. ESPECIALLY Inferno. The game design and "hardcore" mode doesn't match up, they took a D2 concept and applied it to a totally different style of game and it's a complete failure as a result.

As a hardcore Diablo, WoW, and retired hardcore Starcraft fan, I'd put this at about a 5/10 rating for Blizzard's standards.

The game is a massive failure in my eyes, and I'm a huge Diablo 2 fan. If you check the threads I created in the past here you'll see I talk about ladder resets in D2 and also anticipating Diablo 3. It's completely non-melee friendly in Inferno, really wish I created a Wizard/Demon Hunter instead of a Barbarian right now. And the game punishes you for playing in groups, the monsters seemingly get twice as much health and more damage so if everyone's not pulling their own weight, it's basically easier to just to play solo, doubly so against champion/elite packs. Then you have the issue with magic find. Created a magic find character? Your MF is split between party members so if you want to actually magic find, it's better to do it solo.

The way the game is balanced right now, most stats are entirely useless except if it's your main stat and vitality. I went vitality/all resist setup on my barbarian, had a bit more survivablity, but my damage became non-existant to the point to it was pointless. Main stat+Vitality is the way to go, even magics with high stats in those will be better than rares, kinda dumb. The legendaries aren't legendary and have no truly unique stats to make them stand out, so even if you do find one chances are it'll suck ass.

There's so many little things I hate about this game, instead of the elements being like Diablo 2, where poison gives a damage over time effect, lightning gave low min high max damage and so on, all of the elements don't have any effect other than to look graphically different. Then there's things like in the sell screen of the auction house, if you didn't repair your gear you can't see what you have equipped, whereas if it is repaired, you can see it.

Then there's entire art assets being taken from World of Warcraft, like the Demon Hunter's "Boar Companion", which has its model and animation taken straight from WoW, and the Witch Doctor's Corpse Spiders ability with spider model/animation taken straight from WoW. These aren't easter eggs either, they are due to laziness or a lack of time, and given how long the game has been in development, it's a complete mystery to me why they did it.

Then the fact that items themselves don't even matter anymore, armor is all the same, and weapons are basically the same. Wizards with 2 handed axes using the same kind of armor as a melee barbarian type. Wizards with 1 handed axes and shields etc

All in all I think the game is a piece of shit compared to Diablo 2. I hope the RMAH saves it.

It's completely and utterly unacceptable for a Blizzard game. There's so many things that make you feel like it's unfinished and rushed, which is an amazing fucking thing considering it's been in development for so long. The items aren't creative at all and every skill is based on weapon damage which makes the blues better than legendaries right now. So many things are dumb about this game. The auction house is messed up in almost every way possile, it lags, items disappear, gold disappears. WoW models/animations being reused in D3. Duping issues, issues where people can put 2h weapons in 1 hand, you can skip acts, classes are completely imbalanced in inferno, melee chars aren't viable passed act 2 inferno at all, etc etc.

BLIZZARDS ANTI-CHEAT SYSTEM WARDEN ISN'T EVEN IN THE GAME

It is glorious seeing Blizzard's reputation unravel though. I feel like I was a part of watching a company grow up and blossom into a flower and now it's shriveling up and dying.

Damn, I was just going through all your posts and had the links all copy and pasted, ready to reply to him. :p

I dunno. To each his own I guess. I feel like a lot of what you say I either just flat out disagree with, or will be fixed/patched by Blizzard in due time.

True that it could get patched or fixed in time. But why would he want to invest a $60 investment in something that might get fixed over time? What if the devs decide that most of his post isn't what they want and never get close to what he considers fun. I would have to go by the current product and base my purchase on that.

I hate to agree with PornoSatan because I am a die hard Diablo fan from the original, but he is exactly right. The more these guys point out the flaws, I keep saying "your right, your right!" It saddens my heart. I want so much to love this game, but I think I'm done with it for good. :(

Some of his complaints are just straight up game redesigns that won't ever change. Things like the armor, how weapon stats (dps) is taken into account, etc. But there was an open beta and plenty of information about that before the game was released.

Other things like the AH complaints will be addressed I'm sure. Blue's are already responding about upcoming patches and things they're looking to fix/enhance (in all regards not just AH).

His remarks about no replayability because you don't have to reroll another toon just to try a build is pretty nuts imo. I'm thankful that I don't have to do that. Many others are as well. I would less likely to continue playing if I had to roll a whole different character from scratch just to try a slightly different build.

Weapons that make the same sound when attacking... lol?

AH is not really laggy anymore. That was probably from the first few days. There are some issues with the AH but they'll be ironed out no doubt.

He doesn't seem to really know what random means or the method behind their drop system.

Complaints about inferno difficulty, meh.

Legendary items will be tweaked a bit for sure. Maybe not to the extent he really wants, but they're looking into player complaints and trying to adjust accordingly.

In fact basically everything he says in the last quoted paragraph is being addressed or has already been addressed.

I could go on but it's not really worth it.

I was curious to see what his complaints were without having to go back through the thread and he provided that. For which I'm thankful.

I dunno. To each his own I guess. I feel like a lot of what you say I either just flat out disagree with, or will be fixed/patched by Blizzard in due time.

A lot of the problems are fundamental and would take, at the very least, full expansion pack levels of redesign to fix. The game has no lasting appeal to me. I now have a barbarian, wizard and DH at 60 in inferno because as soon as I get them that far I just lose interest. It's got nothing to do with a difficulty cockblock either. I think inferno is tuned fairly well right now, just with a few overly bullshitty mob mechanics that instakill you from off the screen. For the most part though, I can handle what I'm put up against if I play it right.

The problem is that I don't feel like my character is progressing at max level. I'm not looking forward to any items that are going to redefine me and be the cornerstone of my build like, say, Enigma is to a Hammerdin. I just push on through, occasionally finding a piece that raises my damage number up a few thousand points. I very rarely change the skills on my bar, and only for a very specific purpose if I do (usually a cheesy purpose) and I just generally feel no pull to keep playing max level characters.

I'm playing through the same content again, against the same monsters with the same affixes (just 1 more on an elite pack). I'm fighting the same bosses who employ the same mechanics. There's nothing that feels really fresh or new about it, ESPECIALLY not the loot. I'm getting stuff with slightly higher numbers, that's all. I'm not getting anything interesting in any other way, just bigger numbers. Same thing with the enemies, but it feels somehow more boring to me to know that the only thing I have to work towards is making my nether tentacles hit harder.

---

I would like to compare it to MedianXL, because that's what I do: I compare every loot whore aRPG game to the infinitely superior MXL. The concept of inferno difficulty is very much so based on the endgame that MXL brought to Diablo 2. Inferno provides the player with ridiculously tuned numbers and bullshit mob configurations to repeatedly one-shot the player. MXL has a series of what are called uberlevels, uber dungeons, heroic dungeons and bosses that are designed to be tackled once you hit the maximum level (120). They can be equally retardedly tuned as inferno, but most of them have a unique trick or gimmick that the player has to employ to get through them.

For instance, one of the heroic bosses, Quov Tsin, does absurd elemental damage and pierces through up to 300 of your resistances. To beat him, you have to stack items that increase your maximum resistances and about +500 to all resistances. You do this by using the game's varying item modification mechanics to create a set of really high resist gear. You cannot beat him otherwise. Most of the other bosses have similar mechanics to them that encourage the player to think a certain way, not to just make their damage number bigger, but I digress.

What makes MXL so much better is that theses uberlevels are an extra part of the game, not something you would explore and do earlier on. You aren't redoing the entire game again on another difficulty, that's boring. You're tackling entirely new challenges in entirely new zones against new enemies who play by different rules and different mechanics. In addition to that, there is an entire echelon of loot that is not available to players under level 120. Every set item (over 100) and every sacred unique (over 300), a huge variety of crafted items, runewords and gemwords that you cannot pursue until you get to max level.

In MXL, max level is only the beginning. There is a variety of challenges associated with the uberlevels that give you unique and powerful charms. These challenges encourage you to play through the game with about 7 Firefox tabs open to constantly check the requirements because they are obscure and difficult to complete, but it's so rewarding. Every uber level can provide you with yet another really good unique charm, totaling about 25 in the game. Charms aren't in D3. Oops.

Then there's the sacred uniques, sets, crafted items and gemwords. A veritable cornucopia of max level content that is only available once you reach it. And I'm not talking about items that make your numbers bigger, I'm talking about items that create and define entire builds and entire ways of thinking about and playing the game, accomplished mostly through 2 things: 1) on striking effects and 2) item-only skills. Think Enigma, but WAY more powerful and gamechanging.

You create your entire character build around a unique item, and there are so many available with what amount to completely overpowered effects that there are so many viable builds available to the player. And you need all the overpoweredness you can get to progress through the logical ordering of the uberlevels because they are really fucking hard. It all feels so fucking good to learn and take advantage of. Farming feels rewarding when you land an item that doesn't just do a little more damage or increase your EHP a little bit.

Crafting feels rewarding because there are so many item-only skills that exist ONLY on crafted items. Crafting's random too, which gives you a nice shot of them gamblin' endorphines. It also pushes you to look for white items and ethereal items with the superior tags because it is based on a base item's statistics. Remember that? When items with the superior modifier (and they do exist in D3) actually mattered? When an ethereal item with sockets was extremely valuable because of the potential to put, say Breath of the Dying in it and take advantage of that +% damage? Not in D3. Just buy your 1k DPS blue item from the AH, you'll do fine.

Completing an uberlevel gives you not only some pride, but a powerful trophy. Knowledge of all the obscure mechanics that make up the skills and character builds is so useful; you can conjure a build out of nowhere using the most obscure shit, and best of all, it WORKS. It's such a rich and complex game, and it makes me sad to know that the fundamental systems in Diablo 3 are too restrictive to ever allow anything even remotely fucking close to it. And MXL is held back by an engine never designed for modding and no (legal) Battle.net servers. Just thinking what Laz could have done if mod tools like those for SC2 existed in the Diablo 3 paradigm makes me sick.

Just beat the game the 3rd time, twice on Normal, first time just now on Nightmare. @ Lvl 46, need a few more running around hacking and slashing stuff to make it to 50 so i can join in on HELL Difficulty.

Well worth it, Fun game IMO.

I'm enjoying the game.

I reached Diablo on Inferno yesterday, but just don't have the gear (or skill) to kill him yet. Phase two is unpleaseant. Only put in about ten tries so far, however. I've actually found Act IV to be a cakewalk as a wizard compared to Act III. Basic stats are ~45k hp, ~400 or so all resist, ~19000 dps. That works out to something like 1400 int and 1000 vit (using a 15% life gem in my helmet). I seriously need a new weapon, seeing as the best one handers on the AH do something like 50% more dps than what I have. I kid you not that I have found several wands in Act IV that are level 60, yet have a dps rating of 198!!! Random numbers hate me.

My big complaint is the massive difficulty increase that comes when playing with others. It is massively easier for me to solo inferno past Act 2, and that just isn't fun.

Ya they did kind of get carried away with the health multiplier for added team members. In D2 it was not nearly as severe. Its supposed to be hard but 4 player coop gives the minions ridiculous hp.

Pornosatan, you played till level 60 and you want your money back? Surely you have had worse investments in your life. You obviously had enough fun to continue on to the level cap. Do you squeeze every nickel till it squeaks?

This has probably been said before but.. I seriously lost a lot of my interest after act IV normal. I still play it.. but I remember wanting to get to the next difficulty etc to find better loot in D2.. in D3, its like that.. but something feels OFF. After normal mode I had no real desire to progress to hell, and into inferno. Though I am in inferno, its not that great.

same here. enjoyed playing normal but sorta lost interest after finishing normal (and then being hacked). Still near the beginning of nightmare.

It may sit that way for awhile too as I have Max Payne 3 downloading right now.
