Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

This game will get patched up and fleshed out over time, especially when they add back in the enchanter, more gems, another act, another class, and maybe charms with the expansion pack.

However, imo, this game will hinge on how they do the PvP.

The scary part is that there are lots of reasons ($$$$) for making PvP pay-to-win.

If the people who buy the best gear in the game can queue up and own people in shit gear, they'll definitely have lots of people buying items to do so.

If they queue people based on their total item levels, however, the PvP will be more balanced and more fun for everyone... except for the people who just wanted to pwn noobs. In this scenario, there's zero incentive go spend your real money on the best items, because you'll just end up fighting people who also bought their items.

The scary part is that Blizzard already said they don't care about balance in PvP.

What do you think? Will they allow pay to win?

The game doesn't have boe gear and there will be a RMAH. What do you think?

I really don't know, that's why i asked [H] what they think =P

I could see a huge backlash if they make it Pay-to-win, because of how much p2w games are hated across the board, so i'm sure they've considered this.

Alternatively, they want to get more money out of the RMAH...

I'm really not sure which way they'll go with this.

Depends on if good gear continues to get posted to the gold AH or solely to the RMAH. You'll most likely be able to pay to win, because you can pay for gear, which drives this game. If you suck at your build, you may still lose though. However RMAH or not, it goes back to the same dilemma that it would be pay2win either way, through 3rd party sites. The only way to stop it would be to make everything, or say just rares and up, bind on pickup/account, which would kill all trading.

Activision / Blizzard is about money making. I would suspect that all of the really good gear will be on the RMAH. Or the sinister side of me says...

Gold seller robs 500 accounts and posts gold much cheaper than everyone else on the RMAH.

Puts best of the best gear on the gold trading AH for 750 million or more each.

Laughs as you'll buy all his gold to buy the best gear for gold. Nobody knows they are buying from Ni Hao Capone as the AH doesn't list seller names.

Sounds like you think it'll be pay to win.. :(

It could be fixed the way you said, OR, they could just add a item-level comparison to the queue.

ROFL. I died laughing.

Is anyone paying millions for items?I just noticed on general chat some people list items for millions. I'd never pay that much though.

I guess we look at it different. You're talking about some technical issues and... story issues?

Polish to me is smooth animations, lack of graphical issues, etc. Know what I mean? The game runs really smooth and is pretty optimized. I didn't think the story had pacing issues, and with this type of game I'm not even sure you can quantify that. Voice acting doesn't really have anything to do with polish.

The stuttering/rubber-banding is server-lag issues. I honestly don't experience much of that and it will differ slightly for everyone during the initial phase (not to mention what if you just have a shit internet?)

So yeah, anyway. I still feel as a game it's very polished. You have gripes with other things though and some of those I agree with.

Yea, story is part of presentation, presentation is what you polish. Polish doesn't just mean the Monk's dick swings realisticly when he runs.

Some of you folks ...

Was Diablo 2's story even that great? I for one liked the story in D3...

Personally I thought the story was pretty entertaining, and I didn't have a problem with the voice acting (fucking Deckard Cain, come on) pace, or any issues with stuttering/rubberbanding. The boss battles in Diablo have always been pretty lazy. D3 was a notable step up in complexity of the boss design compared to D2.

The itemization and class issues are apparent, but the game was just released. Everyone wants to compare the balance of D3 with D2 but ignores that Diablo 2 has 12 years of patching and balancing applied to it.

They will fix the problems, I am pretty sure of it. WoW wasn't balanced at release either (way worse than D3 actually).

So, are the games polished, or do we need to wait 12 years for them to be? I'm missing something. Saying D2 had the same issues isn't an easy out. You keep making the same mistake at work, despite experience, and you get fired, right? Blizzard is the only game dev that can release a game with problems and not actually feel any negative backlash.

Why would it matter to me if they fix the issues a year from now? I'll be playing Grim Dawn by then.

yes, i've spent over a few million gold on a some items, mostly specific set/legendary items or weapons

also, are anyone else's auctions missing? my auctions tab is completely empty, and so is my completed tab, with no history of any of the items i posted yesterday evening. i also can't post any auctions with an error saying 'only 0 auctions are allowed at a time' :(

Yes. My Stormshield was 9M (28% block), and my fist was 5M (1030 dps), and every other item of mine was in the realm of 2-5M. As you get into Inferno, millions really aren't that much. I bought my items days ago though and prices have dropped for those same items 33%+ in just a few days.

I'm interested to see how the prices of items do as the game matures. Will they continue to decrease due to the market being saturated with said items? Or since everyone is gaining money and there are no money sinks, that items will be affected by inflation and increase substantially in price? As it stands now, prices are dropping like rocks, but I feel that's currently due to market saturation.

The market will sink and the reason why the market will sink is because Act 2 vs 1 inferno is such a different playing field. People are gearing up for just that. Plus you are going to get a lot of people who kill diablo on inferno and are completely done with the game.

It isn't like it was 10 years ago when Diablo 2 was the only action rpg that could be played online. I don't see many people farming for items for years, myself included.

The AH itself is the single biggest gold sink in the game.

There is actually a theoretical limit to how much items can cost purely because of the 15% AH fee.

For example, if on average during a single farming run you gain 15,000 gold from picking up gold and vendoring stuff minus repair fees / pots and you sell the loot you get for 100,000 gold, then that 15,000 instantly disappears.

If items suddenly were priced much higher on average, then the amount of gold in the economy as a whole would start decreasing.

So how much gold you have after spending millions? I am in inferno and barely have over 1mln, so that's why I don't see my self buying anything in that price range.

I felt like D2's story was more intriguing, it kept you guessing, because you never really knew wtf with the dark wanderer.

Lol what? It was the most simplistic and easiest story to figure out. If you didnt know who the Dark Wanderer I really dont know what to say.

I guess it would depend on how high the item prices were. They would have to be high enough to have the 15% AH fee out-pace the rate players collect gold from in-game, since the majority of the gold still remains in the players' hands. I am not big on economics (obviously), so I very well could be wrong. :)

I have 15M sitting on my account right now and I make 5-15M per day (depending on how much I play, 4-8 hours). Once you are able to effectively farm elites and then bosses (Neph buff), you'll make bank. Or you can use the most recent gold-making method of killing some Treasure Goblin over and over or farming the Resplendent Chest. There was a patch today so I don't know if those were fixed though.

Yeah, the ending cinematic of Diablo 1 showed you as the Dark Wanderer. Myself though, I didn't realize how yourself and the rest of the world would later connect though.

I still remember those cinematics to this day. I like the diablo stories, 3 included. The pacing is fine and the atomsphere is very much Diablo themed.

I'd argue that with the number of hacked accounts and the stolen gold that the supply can increase for those that are stealing. Let me pretend that I am an account thief and you're my victim.

I steal your account and 35 million gold.

I sell it to players X, Y, and Z.

You come home from work and notice your 35 million is missing.

You put in ticket to Blizzard asking for account restoration.

You get your 35 million back and I got to keep it by embezzling it through legit accounts. or just selling it.

35 million has just been added to the economy.

Now I know for a fact that Blizzard doesn't give a durn about gold sellers as I turned them in when I played WoW and my friends used to buy gold all day and never got caught. Hell my buddy borrowed 100k one day and went to the same guy I turned in and got my money back from him.

Just an observation. :)

And how big a percentage of the population is that?

This is also a static system and is not sustainable. AFAIK, everyone gets a set number of resets. IIRC this is how WOW worked.

The AH is a steady state system that works on the population.

Does the mobile authenticator work on WiFi only? I have an iPhone 3GS, but it's not active anymore since I just carry my work Blackberry.

Theres no connection between the authenticator and the authentication system. They're designed to produce the same codes independently and simultaneously (though sometimes they can go out of sync in which case you'll need an internet connection to resync them). That way, unless someone knows your serial code and can reproduce your authenticator, there's no way that anyone else will know your codes.

It doesn't need to work for everyone. Just the guys buying and selling gold. If the guys buying gold are willing to spend 20x gold as you to buy stuff then the prices of gear goes up. I mean if I see the wand of buttkicking being listed for 10 million and I was about to list it for 100k; I'm going to list it at 9.5 million. The system remembers the prices and averages them together to let others know what the average selling price was. All you need are a few people listing stuff high for this system to work. I had buddies in Aion that had 10 accounts for the explicit purpose of selling items to chumps willing to pay the price. They did RMT and made thousands off casual players. It is what it is. It was so profitable that he had at least 12 people working for him that I knew of. Each had multiple accounts doing this.

I would say hearing ominous sounds and stumbling across a room full of butchered and partially eaten people is a little different atmospherically and thematically than a purple disney witch surrounded by butterflies introducing the Butcher like he was Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 14.

Agreed. Also the story is fine, the execution is horrid. :p

Belial, Lord of Lies, isn't a very good liar. You were the kid the whole time? Oh my! This changes everything.
Azmodan, Lord of Sin, master of strategy, tells you his plans all the way through the Act. Reminds me of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers.
Diablo: "You may have closed my hell gate, but I still have one more!"
:D

Couldnt agree more. I actually preferred the style of the first game where you just go further and further into the depths of hell. Instead of putting me in an Oasis, put me into a deep deep labrynth with changing atmosphere as I go further and further down. The graphics look good in this game just too cartoony. Its obviously WoW with a Diablo skin which kind of sucks. The game is still pretty fun (especially in co op) but its been turned into something else. I wouldnt really call it Diablo even...then again I didnt care much for Diablo 2 either.

What's this "a patch is available, game is going to reset and restart, then go through the same thing over and over" shit?

Killed the Butcher on Inferno with my wizard when I had five stacks of Nephalem Valor, he dropped two yellows (both resist all gear pieces) and ten mostly worthless blues.

Had 24.5K dps and 30K health, I just used Venom Hydra and the occasional Seeker Magic Missile while running around and Teleporting amped on Force Weapon/Familiar Sparkflint/Energy Armor crit. Pretty fun fight, he was alot easier than the mobs I had to clear to get to him.

I had that issue. Before you log in, after launching the game, try to change your region to your home country (or home client version). It worked for me; it was on EU, changed to US, and was able to log in.

Is it just me, or is it with the male barbarian (at least), it looks like he actually knows who Belial is right after their first encounter? lol

Azmodan:
You'll never defeat my army!
:defeats army:
Azmodan:
You'll have to get past my assault on your defenses!
:gets past assault and puts up catapults:
Azmodan:
Your catapults suck.
:catapults decimate army:

Ha I have my own, suck on that!
:destroys Azmodan's catapults:

Nephalem suck did you know that?

I think you're nitpicking stuff. Ya some parts are especially cheesy, but no more than many of the parts D2 had compared to D1. D2 had midgets riding around on the back of other midgets. D3 has ominous sounds and rooms full of butchers or partially eaten people as well, I just think the blinders are seriously on in regards to the D2 nostalgia.

Exactly. Halls of agony, or is it pain, is a perfect example. Love the look of that place. Also attacking the beds with spiked wheels and watching the dead body get ground up, good stuff.

Don't forget magical ponies, and flowers, and clouds with rainbows!
