Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

I recently beat Inferno solo as a DH, now i'm leveling up a WD Hardcore, let's see how it goes.

I can honestly say Im only still playing because Im making $100-$200 dollars a week off the RMAH. Otherwise Id be gone..

Whats your secret? I farm act 1 inferno (stack 5 neph buffs etc) and never find anything good. Ever. I only want to find one good thing, sell it for at least $60 (get my money back). Or even sell multiple items just to reach the goal of $60 but again, I don't find anything, sadly.

Farming differences to me are like this.

Diablo 2 ---- Faster runs, less Items to pick up, better Good items percentages, A working Teleport, Runes, better Set Items drops.

Diablo 3 ---- Slower runs, More Items to pick up resulting in worse percentages, Legendary weapons blow, better party system even though its limited to 4 players.

the feeling I get while farming both games is the same. Tedious but still fun and rewarding when something is found. I normally farm with friends while watching a movie so the tedium is drastically reduced and I enjoy myself very much.

Multiple contradictions... you also aren't having fun if something is tedious, you also aren't enjoying yourself "very much" when you have to watch a movie instead of PLAYING the game.

There is something to be said for games you can play casually with friends while relaxing.

I finally broke the unbuffed 20k dps barrier on my Monk. Hardest goal so far in D3. I could have done it with blue weapons, but I ain't slummin. I doubt that will be good enough for the Ghom wall, but whatever.

If you're willing to farm, I can tell you how to make guaranteed money. Star Emeralds... I'm averaging about $1.50 (after Bliz's cut) per star emerald, and they stay on the RMAH for less than 5 mins after listing every time I place one. Now gold is selling for $.25 per 100k, but after the cut, that's about 700k. Now, if you try buying flawless star and tomes of secrets, you'll end up on a losing proposition. And if you farmed all the mats yourself and sold them at average AH prices (3k per flawless star emerald, 1.5k per tome of secret), you'll only make 660k. Farming the mats yourself has an estimated $.09 more in profit (and taking into account the extra money you save, it really equates to $.14 more). Unfortunately, prices don't scale too well after until you reach radiant star, as a flawless star only nets you around $.12 profit, and perfect star is about $.18.

Now, a good approach is to farm the AH for Tomes of Jewelcrafting and Flawless Square Emeralds. What you're after is a ToJ for under 1500 gold or FSE for 2100 gold, and at that point, you'll reach the break even price for gold selling versus jewel selling. (Square Emeralds sell for next to nothing). But, I'll give a heads up. It's only the Star Emeralds and above which sell. The other types of jewels don't really sell (which is strange, as you'd figure more people would play mages & warriors after 1.03).

You only need 17k for Ghom.

Stats which I've killed Ghom, but died in the process:

450 RA
18k health
17k dps

Strangely, the rest of the stage is a piece of cake. I can manage to kill Siegebreaker with 12k dps (stacking up on as much magic find as possible) without even breaking a sweat. Literally, I just stand there attacking and never moving, and only use heal (with the damage booster) when necessary (just for boosting attacks, and not even healing. 500 LoH takes care of it all.)

Yup. Up until 99, you were still developing your character further. Obviously Diablo is a game heavy into stats, so I can't justify the removal of a whole layer of character progression.

Yeah, I've said this a couple times already (sorry for people who may have read it), but I think what D3 needs the most is "predictable personal character progression," the word "personal" being key. The race to 99 was one of them, though it wasn't the greatest form of progression IMO. Most suggestions I've read around have the same underlying desire. The word "predictable" isn't the sexiest thing to want in the game, but it's what people want on some level. A lot of people want a way to actually see themselves getting stronger with a sense of foresight to it. Right now, only the AH gives people a sense of predictability, and thus they feel forced to use it. Their predictable progress feels it's at the mercy of other players helping them out. Though this was also true in D2, the game was easy so it didn't matter much. That's a whole different topic to discuss entirely.

Mathematically speaking, D3 has a post-game progression system in atm, but it's only 1 system and it's randomized. If you put in X amount of time, you'll eventually get Y stat boosts. With every upgrade you get, you need more time to get more stats. Sounds like any old leveling system, but the problem is that it's random and you can't know when that stat boost will happen and that can be discouraging.

This desire for predictability applies to the items themselves. It's hard to get excited when you see any rare drops atm, even ilvl 63 gear, because of the random nature of the rolls. Mathematically, it shouldn't matter. A good drop will always be a rare drop (literally rare, not the item quality "rare"), so your hopes shouldn't be high regardless. But I think that being able to see a good drop right has it hits the ground, rather than buried in a sea of junk rares, makes a difference psychologically.

I haven't tried it solo. So far, Monk is MP only. For whatever reason, I'm beating my head against him with ~800 resists, 20kdps, 30khp and ~1100 LoH. Everything else has been fine. Even stupid affix packs can be killed without costing too much in repairs.

There you go. Even though D2 leveling was flawed, too, it at least provided that reactivity between gear and choice.

As a helpful hint, unless you can sleep your way through the Ghom fight, I would not try to face him in multiplayer. The reason is that Ghom is pretty much a very hard boss for everyone (hardest fight in the game honestly, barring some stupid affix elites). He's a fairly easy boss, minus the enrage timer, if you can get him to move as predicted. The problem is, with more players comes required teamwork, and each person doing his or her share, which is quite rare when it comes to multiplayer. And no offense, even friends sometimes aren't quite as helpful as you might think them. You have the stats to beat Ghom, and if it's your friends who you like to play with, they can join you after Ghom is dead, and get that quest completed that way, so you all can move on.

he said a monk, and we're talking about inferno. I have 27k dps, 730 resist all, 400 loh, 200 lpss, 500 lps 31k h and can only get him down to half, trying various builds. Somehow he can take 3/4 my health down in less than a second when I'm not standing in poison or close to him. If you're claiming you somehow beat him without being carried with those stats as a monk you are flat out lying.

It's possible I'll try solo, but every accomplishment so far has been in groups with this character. Always the tank. This one is just not tankable in MP unless you've farmed the hell out of things, or got lucky on AH.

The only thing that I think would maybe seal the deal is upping my LoH offhand aug to 600 from 300. I wouldn't say the fight is close atm, but well past halfway into his health.

Soloing yields the best results imho. I've never played multiplayer other than to give out items to my friends or teach battle tactics.

I tried ~2000 LoH and 2000 life regen post 1.03, but the problem with Ghom is that later on, his clouds do like 15k/sec damage, which is just not really possible to live through, barring ridiculous hit speeds (which is possible with a DH or barb).

Deadly reach is an absolute must with Ghom.

For group fights, you will all want to be very close to each other (pretty much standing on top of each other). Just drag him around the edge of the room. This is where it really is tricky, as non monks/barbs have a tendency to want to stay as far away as possible, but you need everyone to survive, and as close as possible to not fill the whole room too early with clouds. Use blinding flash (Faith in the light solo, or self reflection in mp) and sweeping wind with fire storm, and his spawns should be a non issue. When he spews forth the acid, you all need to rush right onto him, so his clouds will double stack, and then just back off a few feet just outside of his cloud so you don't waste any more time then necessary. Going counter clockwise, you should be able to traverse the edges of the room twice before the enrage timer.

It's not your stats that are the problem.

Here, I just recorded this about half an hour ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXOKxrXtag8

Yes, my stats aren't what I stated, but that was awhile ago (I have since upgraded my gear) when I was determined to beat Ghom post 1.03. I'll admit it was an expensive endeavor then (I think I spent like half a million before I beat him), but these stats in the video are worse than what you have, and I took him down. (And I made several mistakes in this fight, but it's doable with much less hp. 17k is about the minimum dps I'd suggest though).

You can see the stats at the end of the video, but here's a quick synopsis.

Monk vs Inferno Ghom
HP: 29660
Resist All: 517
DPS: 17540.62
LPS: 751
LPH: 679

Deadly reach isn't necessary per say....I did it with Thunderclap at only 800 res all with 850 LoH

you can have plenty of fun doing something tedious and I do. to help you out here is the definition of tedious I am using "Obsolete Moving or progressing very slowly". I'll step up my statement and say I am enjoying myself 1 step above very much. I am enjoying myself more than people who are just playing Diablo 3.

Great example I wanted to watch Thor....but I know that Thor is going to be a pretty shitty movie so I watched it while doing an act 3 run. Thor was indeed a pretty bad movie but my time wasn't completely wasted watching it because I was also playing D3. Also my time wasn't completely wasted playing D3 because I also watched Thor.

There are plenty of games that are tedious but still fun anyone who has played a Civilization knows this.

In fact, some people prefer games that progress very slowly. Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc.

That's funny. I watched Thor while playing Sins the other day.

OK. Ghom wasn't bad solo. I will not be able to skip my WD buddy ahead, he wants to beat the game fair and square. He has some ~5k dps more than I do without buffs or anything, the fight is just dumb in MP.

Unfortunately, I can't give you tips on the witch doctor, as it's the one class I haven't played. (Multiplayer for Ghom up above). But if it's anything like the wizard or demon hunter for single player, your friend will quickly need to learn that DPS isn't everything. He'll need to start taking into consideration defense and resistances. This will be very helpful for Act 4 on the second boss who likes to teleport strike party members. Fortunately, he won't need too much. Maybe like 400-500 RA?

This is particularly hard for WDs. We're not normally used to taking any hits, what with so many pets and followers. I really had to change my game when I hit inferno.

He's about ~500 RA with better than average ac and defensives. I think the WD's need a boost to a few skills atm, some of them really drop off a cliff as far as effectiveness goes.

WD seems to hit a bit of a wall in Hell mode Act 2 while at level 52-53. More so than the Barb did. Act 2 is a bitch anyway, but seems overly hard. I had to change play style to move on. Though now 54 and and still in Act 2.

You can blow through Hell easily, just go buy a blue 700-800dps weapon with a reduced level affix off the AH. Makes the game trivial until you get to Inferno. I'm all for playing the game the way it was intended, but by Hell difficulty I'd already beaten the game twice and I wanted to get to inferno :)

Let the duping commence!!!

Yea, I hot that too. Key is MOAR INT. Get that DPS up, and use the bouncing skull+Garg and ZombieDogs + swarm.

Played this game for 90h, managed to collect 3 mil and then sold a rare item for 6m, so 9m to my name and i still can't upgrade or beat inferno act 2.

It was fun, good bye diablo 3.

Need some advice from some Inferno barbs here. I'm in Act 2 Hardcore right now and was getting pounded pretty badly until I upgraded more of my armor to include AR. I'm currently about 9300 armor buffed (including enchantress), 777 baseline AR, with some resists going up to mid 800s, 12500 dps (once frenzy has gone five hits in). Just took down Magda pretty easily earlier.

Is my dps going to be a hindrance for me to complete Act 2? I'm particularly concerned about Zoltan Kulle (which I hear is a 3 minute instakill enrage timer) and of course Belial, whom I tried about 60 times before downing with my wizard in non hardcore.

running 500 AR with 8000k armour and 40k hp with 28k dps and ACT II everything pretty much dies , except for crazy fast elites.Khule and Belial are easy MP to be honest :) Went through both pretty much within 3-4 tries.

^Barb? How the heck did you get your dps so high? Think solo would be easy too?
