Destiny - Discussion Thread

Game has a bunch of flaws but I am enjoying it with my friends. It is getting a bit repetitive but good that they opened Venus planet for me so going to continue with that. Gunplay is really cool and enjoy it quite a bit. Only issue is that it wants to be an MMO which means doing some ridiculous missions in the same damn location over and over and over ad nausem. Once you hit level 20 I think best thing you can do is wait for the expansions to roll out. Is it worth the 60 bucks, I think so that it is. I am enjoying it quite a lot.

In PVP the game could seriously use a M+K setup. This is my first foray into MP on a console even though I have owned consoles since PS2 days but hot damn do I suck ass at it. Need to really improve my skillset and also weaponry. Walking into MP at level 5 wasn't a good idea lol. Was getting one shot killed.

ITT: people who don't have enough RL friends to play with so end up complaining day in day out.

Seriously guys, the game is way more fun with friends than random pugs. Hell, add some people here if you don't have any RL friends to play with.

That...or you must be "fun" at parties to be having this problem.

I understand the shortcomings, but my god is PvP ever fun with friends.

In other words, theres a remote few who really like destiny and theyll die for it, understood.

Weapon damage is normalized in PVP.

Really, the trick to PVP is WATCH THE RADAR. Aiming is really difficult at first because controller, but once you get a feel for it, it's not really awful. Once you get on someone, you really only need small adjustments.

Let me get this straight...

In what is, to all intents and purposes, an online game based on fireteams and co-op play...there's NO in-game voice-chat?

To be fair, any game is better with friends vs randoms. Even terrible ones.

The problem is Destiny was hyped and marketed as a "Social" game, yet provides almost no in-game tools to facilitate this for people who didn't already arrange something beforehand.

On Xbox one you can chat with anyone you invite to a fireteam.

Yes, as long as you start a party there is voice chat. There is no proximity chat though other than in the central hub. Say you're running around doing patrols and see smother player, you have to randomly go through the trouble of starting a fire team (party) for any communication to occur..

Unless you can convey what you need through a dance or wave emote lol..

I'm level 9 now and am enjoying the game a fair bit. My only gripe is that most of my friends game on PC or PS3 so I don't have anyone to group with. I was hoping this was more open to PUG and I could easily group with other players I came across. I'm lucky if I cross paths with 1 or 2 other people when I'm playing.

There is in-game voice chat for fireteams only, and this is true on my PS3.

I do not have an interest in a PS4 yet due to my computer not overpowering the system specs for it, so until my computer is upgraded I'll get a PS4.

Destiny is fun to me, and fun in the sense it's something new and different; however this is coming from a person who mainly plays MMORPGs on the PC which usually consist of Guild Wars 2, or World of Warcraft. So for the 'dumbed down gamer' Destiny will tend to be fun.

The above, and my interest on how the PvE progression will pan out over time. Did I enjoy the story of the game, let alone the gameplay of 'Defend your Cortana-ripoff'? Not at all, but i enjoy the interaction with people through the elder game.

Playing beer pong and watching movies are also fun to do with friends that doesn't changed the problems this game has. Anything is better with friends, Diablo 3, CoD, BF4, etc. the difference between those games and Destiny is I think I'm over it already.

Don't get me wrong, if Bungie releases monthly content for free and large yearly Expansions for a cost I will gladly come back to it. There is nothing wrong with the core mechanics or artsyle/presentation.

I dunno I play this and just wonder where that 6 years worth of development is. I'm also scared to think of how this additional content will be delivered. If it's anything but free I'm going to just SMH. 19.99 for those expansion packs they are hyping up is frankly insulting. I'll be goddamned if I pay 20 bucks for what they say is in it when the retail release was this shallow.

Hey, so I'm a co-developer on a project called Phase. We're hoping to help make gaming in groups easy again, particularly with games like Destiny that don't have the right tools built-in.

We just launched an alpha version of our android app this week (yes it's free), so all feedback is very welcome and appreciated. You can download it here. If you need to find it without a link, search "Phase Alpha" in the Play Store.

Here's how it works:

1) Start up the app and register a username.

2a) Join one of the already existing public games and play with the group when the scheduled start time rolls around. There is a group chat option with notifications to help get everyone organized and playing together.

2b) Alternately, hit "create game" and make your own game (use any title you want), time to play, and platform. If you mark the game as public it will be visible to anyone on the app. Also you can optionally invite friends from your phone, through email, or directly in-app.

3) **That's it!** A reminder will be sent to all invited players 5 minutes before your game starts, then it's time to play.

Note: For friend invites that don't have the app, they'll get a personalized link to an RSVP webapp where they can see the game and accept or decline (works on iPhone). Note that for public games, usernames will be displayed and real names will not be visible.

-------------

So give it a shot and let me know what you think (we're also on facebook here). We're trying to help people not only find new friends to play with but also better organize times to play with their existing friends (because you know not everyone is going to be online all the time - but they've got their phones with them).

It's a pain forming a Fireteam on your own, especially once the raids launch. Phase aims to make that process a lot smoother.

Have you seen metacritic? Lol averaging a 75 right now. Its a mediocre game in its present state no different

Can somebody tell me how the fuck to communicate with a fire team? This is fuckn pissing me off. I get someone to join my team, I have the wireless gold headset, I can see them talking and me talking but neither one of us can hear each other. God fucking damn it the social part fucking blows in this game.

Never said it was anything but, as a matter of fact I said a 70-75 was about where I would grade it. You act like a 75 is something that means it is unplayable. You sound like your about to give yourself and aneurysm playing the game. If the game is driving you so batshit crazy why the fuck are you subjecting yourself to this torment?

Thanks I am also going to adjust my stick sensitivity. It is off for me in this game. Overall I am enjoying it but there are times of tedium. Just hit level 11 on it.

They need to nerf auto rifles more. They're still just plain good at everything and bad at nothing... and so you still see nearly every single person in PVP running around with one. I want to see some fucking variety.

Mine has basically 0 recoil, so once I'm on someone it's just time to hold the trigger down and win the firefight. Other stuff may be better situationally, but an auto rifle is still probably 90% as good. It's just a laser accurate damage hose.

Theres 1 rifle that isnt balanced, and its the Singen? I think. Everyone is saying that is the only auto rifle thats even viable in PVP

I'm not too far into the game. Level 4. So I think I screwed myself by not educating myself before purchase. I too bought the Digital version. I thought/heard/dreamt that this would be an open world with hubs along the way in the way of an MMO style shooter. But I'm greeted with picking a location and do a mission. The mission ends then I'm transported back into my ship. Rinse repeat. So there's not an open world to explore? Or I should've explored before finishing a mission? I went into this thinking Diablo but dang I was nowhere near it. Again not blaming anyone but myself. I too fell for the Hype.

If the maps and overall game arent at least as explorable and relatively open as say Borderlands, then that's disappointing. All the previews and teasers and E3 demos sure made it seem like a Halo-fied Borderlands, which is what initially got my interest.

Edit: escapistmagazine review called it a "watered down borderlands" and "more confined than borderlands" so it seems my disappointment is confirmed. 6 years of development seems like a long time for what they delivered based on the reviews I'm reading. One site called it a "sugar crash" game where its exciting at first but people may lose interest even faster than they did Titanfall.

I lost interest with titanfall in less than a week, so I guess I'm the exception. I still find Destiny damn fun in comparison. I just played a few games solo in crucible and although I didn't win them all, I sure as hell did the best out of the two teams. Averaging about 4-5k per control match.

The one with 12837128 rounds is literally fucking useless anywhere and the Gallahad is just as good as the Shingen.

Like 95% of the player base uses them. It's been like that in alpha and beta. They're easy as fuck to use and effective as hell.

i never could get into either borderlands. probably 9 hours total played between them. I am having way more fun in Destiny, and honestly i wouldnt even compare them necessarily. The PVP aspect is what i really like over borderlands. i guess the steampunk/post-apoc feel of borderlands with the cel shade look is what kinda turned me off. But i realize I am in the minority on that view, and I'll admit it.

I don't know how this always online bullshit isn't getting more attention. I've been 15+ minutes into a mission several times, only to get disconnected and kicked out for no apparent reason.

There's nobody else in my game. Why the fuck does my connectivity status matter? It's infuriating.

Yeah it's a halolands with no exploration and little content. The PVP is decent but that's about it. The loot is stale and the guns are pretty much identical with no soul. Whta gets me really is this game took 6 years to make and had a massive budget and backing from Activision did Bungie not know of Borderlands or even play it? No one at Bungie was like " hey guys there is this awesome game similar to ours but it is funner, has better loot and has 10 times more content and character than our game, maybe we should hit the drawing board again with Destiny?"

I just dont get how Bungie or Activision or hell the investors were completely unaware that Destiny was inferior to Borderlands in every single way and still released it without improvement or revision.

I mean really,
if you want a better loot game play Borderlands
if you want a better shooter game play Borderlands
if you want a beter exploration game play Borderlands
if you want a deeper RPG with actual builds play Borderlands
if you want a game with more interesting characters and NPCs play Borderlands
if you want a game with voice chat to players in your game play Borderlands
if you want a social online COOP that is better with matchmaking play Borderlands
if you want a game that is better than Destiny and on the PC play Borderlands

So much fail.

Get a patrol mission in old Russia to scout an area. Get to the area and find the spot you need to stand at for the ghost to scan is wide open for a walker to shoot you. Solo the damn walker, reward? 450 exp. WTF?! You get more from helping with one during an event. Had I known the reward would have been so paltry, I wouldn't have bothered.

Still soloing a walker was epic.

Edit: I was lvl 7 at the time

QFT. Since last night's post I borrowed a friend's copy and have been playing today. What I can say is that after five minutes into the first mission, I just wanted to go play Borderlands. Ofcourse 5 minutes doesn't mean much, the point is that's how fast I already didn't care and wanted to bail. So I played 2 hours, took a break, then 2 more hours. One thing that stuck out was that by the 5th or 6th mission, it was already recycling a map from one of the earlier missions.

I actually want to like this game, I want to find the upside that people are swearing is there, so I'm going to fight through the boredom and keep playing and give it at least a few days. And I'm playing on 360, so in fairness, maybe the PS4 version would be more compelling due to the better graphics, though fundamentally its the same game. I also haven't tried any PvP yet so maybe that's where it gets better.

Maybe its also just a generational thing. Being in my 30's maybe I'm past mindless console shooters, and when I talk to my nephews I'm sure they'll be going on and on about Destiny since they're big Halo kid-fans. Maybe I'm just not the target demographic.

I am happy that the game seems to pick up a bit around levels 8-10. The first few hours I felt a little bored with everything. my personal rating up to level 12 so far would be a 7/10 game. With some quality DLC/addons it can only get better.

My feeling is if we're going to have to wait for DLC/addons for the game to get better, well they've failed or at least done things in the reverse order. The game should have been an 8 or a 9 out of the gate with as much hype as its received.

On the bright side, at least the game has revolvers.

The game was a blast until I hit level 20 and finished the campaign. Now the fun is completely missing.

A quote from BreezyLimbo from NeoGAF;

It's easy to break the AI in the game, to a point of being ridiculous. Since all the enemies are on a tether, once you figure where that tether is...

For example, melees AI is simple-Avoid grenade areas, get target. When you apply the tether, it becomes-
1-Avoid grenade areas
2-mind the tether area
3-Go to tether if possible

So what happens if you put a grenade between them and their tether? They freeze up. They try to retreat to the tether area but can't, and they can't cross the grenade, so they'll just sit there.

Harmless. Ranged enemies will shoot at you when possible, otherwise melee is a bit broken.

I never noticed this at first because of my distant playstyle (more ranged) but the webm video is hilarious.

Eh Game is fun so far personally the only one I'm really looking forward too is The Division. Until than everything is a distraction.

After playing the Alpha I told myself that it was simply "an Alpha and to wait". Waiting for the beta , things improved , more content and overall I enjoyed it but I wanted more content.

Now after playing since the 9th I can say that I'm honestly pretty disappointed with how much of this game was just left "unfinished". So much of the story is buried in DLC and that's just a severe let down. I expected a large amount to be dealt with in DLC content but not to the point that I feel like we only got about 30 percent of the story and a broken game at launch.

The 3 player co-op just doesn't work. Its frustrating as hell coming from a conditioning of 4 player co-op (from even Bungie's own previous games , frustrating) having to deal with friends who want to play but have to be turned away because people like to group together to do things. Major blunder. I hoped Bungie would account for this and attempt to offer missions that properly scale but instead its just mindless and effortless.

The game itself is utterly broken in many different ways. The loot system is the worst possible for such a game. Being excited to get a legendary only find out it was worth 2 strange coins or some weird blue item you can't even use or the worst.. a legendary FOR A DIFFERENT CLASS!! I've ran into this problem 4 times now. Not kidding 4 FUCKING TIMES!! I have 3 pieces of Warlock legendary gear and 1 hunter and ZERO for my Titan. It reeks of laziness on Bungie's part. This is not something that would have passed "Q/A" without some bells going off. That means they ignored it and entirely so. This one issue is putting off even the most hardened fanboy.

The MP is tripe. Its fun but mediocre at the same time. The worst part is someone AFK can , at the end , get an Exotic item even though they didn't participate in the fucking game! I just can't even fathom this passed Q/A without notice. Another lazy brush applied to a final release that had several phases of internal and public testing. Unforgivable.

The gear that is good and not locked behind a comedy of errors know as "Engram's" is just absurdly buried in "requirements". It would take you at least a week plus to get enough Crucible marks and probably another week to get the rep if you farmed constantly. The rep is permanent but the marks even with bounties just deplete so fast. One weapon is around 150+ marks. Getting "geared" would take months.. WILL take months for most. The randomness of awards from doing Strikes and PVP makes it all the more frustrating. I just can't even imagine all the things Bungie ignored to push for a release now. This game would have benefited from another 6 months of testing and polishing.

I find myself reduced to farming lower level mobs and chests in the hopes of getting an Engram that will result in a class item for me. Hope against failing hope really. I'm level 24 and managed to gear myself as much as possible. Now I can't even participate in the raids coming up because the gear I need is held behind a gear wall that is entirely based around RNG. Its not because I don't measure up as a player but because Bungie couldn't be bothered to actually consider really balancing its game before releasing it and critically so in terms of loot which is the most important balancing aspect of any game.

Unless Engram's are fixed and gear is more attainable I won't be coming back. I tried my best to hold out for the release for judgement. This game is a total mess. Its lazy in many aspects of its presentation. Bungie has had years upon years to get this right. They are not a "new" developer they get the end game but they seem unable to accomplish this even with almost a $500 Million budget. I've seen indie games better balanced than this that cost a few million to create. This game will take months to patch and well over a year to finally flesh out the story. The fact that Bungie claims this will be a 10 year franchise is laughable. It'll be dead in the water if they take their sweet time making it even worth playing past level 24. Shipping $500 Million dollars worth of games is very different from SELLING $500 Million dollars worth of games , putting out a press release stating this is just PR nonsense. I'm very curious to see ACTUAL sales figures down the line..

Unless you get extremely lucky RNG this game is a waste of time. I'll check back in a month or two and see if they've bothered to patch the more serious issues. So glad there are so many other really great games coming between now and December. I'm also glad I didn't buy into the hype machine. Boy , I would have been REALLY let down if I did that..

I got the Destiny PS4 bundle this weekend and gave it a try for a few hours. I hadn't really followed its development too much, other than that it was Bungie's next big thing and had a bit of a hype train going. So far, it's definitely extremely... mediocre. Some aspects are really, really polished - the movement and shooting controls are just about perfect, and the graphics are usually really good. Good music and other sound design, etc.

Biggest issue is that for being an online-only game, it's just horrible if you don't have a list of friends who also have the game and are also playing at the same time as you. You can't really "PUG" stuff like story co-op (unless I missed something) so right away I got slapped with that awful feeling of solo grinding an MMO. NOT what you want in a game like this AT ALL.

RIP Bungie. :(

im a little disappointed i bought a PS4 for this. the game is ok, but thats really all it is. and unless theres a steady stream of free content coming out for it, i just dont see myself playing it for that long.

the story was a bad joke, dinklage was a terrible voice actor, and the mission style was repeated every damn mission (ghost scans something, 3 wave of enemies, done). the loot system is just... weird as hell and makes no sense. and what little loot does drop is worthless.

and then theres the no in game social options at all.

the game could be good, i think most of the parts are there, but its missing some serious content/variety.

Sooooo totally agree with this.

I'm chugging through the story; I really try to finish games but I find myself having to force myself to log in to Destiny. I just don't particularly care what happens next in the story...

Also Dinklage sounds like he can't wait to go home and is just reading through the lines...

So glad there are so many other really great games coming between now and December. I'm also glad I didn't buy into the hype machine. Boy , I would have been REALLY let down if I did that..

At least you have gotten legendary engrams or legendaries in general. I'm stuck at level 24 because I have never gotten a single legendary anything to drop for me. It's pretty terrible. I keep reading about all these people complaining about how they've only found 7 or 8 purple engrams. I wish I had their "bad" luck.:(:(:(

Sooo...I've not actually played the game but I'm building something of a picture.

The whole social/MMO bit of it just sounds like the MP from Mass Effect. Is that a reasonable parallel? Fight waves of enemies in an arena, rinse and repeat?

The lack of loot etc. just sounds a bit lame...but Bungie's frame of reference is Halo so maybe it was asking too much? The weapons in Halo were pretty "meh".

BUT...what's with the, allegedly, poor plot?

The whole thing just sounds half-baked and I'm glad I didn't buy into the hype. However, I'm probably one of the few people who thinks Halo was tremendously overrated in the first place.

Looks to me like the lads at Bungie were short on cash and decided to throw something together, utilising a lot of their existing assets and came up with Destiny. You can see the Halo influences throughout, some of the armour styles, the weapons, the weapon sounds, Dinklage-Bot.

So lame.
