Dell U2713HM

@soldierblue thanks, the burn-in seems to be gone for now. It may or may not come back after a break, but I'm not waiting around to find out. I'm sending it back today and hopefully the replacement will be better.
The image retention would be a dealbreaker for me. I'd definitely check to make sure the problem doesn't persist with your replacement. This issue is often related to the panel part, usually caused by excessive voltage creating a persistent charge which remains on the affected pixels. If the wrong value is in the spec, then, unfortunately, all of them are going to have it.

And this can become permanent. I've got an LCD TV (S-PVA) that has ghost images from black bars permanently imprinted on either side as well as an accumulated overall halo from other images that are completely non-static.

This issue bothers me, because I was actually considering this monitor. It's one of those things that never seems to be fixed, or even acknowledged by the manufacturer as a problem, because it would be too costly to discard such a large existing inventory.

I just returned a 2711 because I've got a DisplayPort-only Mac Mini as part of my setup and it would refuse to link or wake at least twice a day and I'd have to fiddle with it.

I mean, we had some where I was working that did the same thing, but those were early revisions, and I'd heard about the issue. But damn, this thing was the latest revision and it's still got the problem? Come on.

Not to mention the whole, "yeah, U2410s can have this green/pink tint, but it's within spec".

I hope your replacement is better. Dell monitors usually have an 'LCD Conditioning' program on 'Other Settings' to help get rid of that sort of thing. I agree it shouldn't happen in the first place though.

I tested it again today and after 10-15 minutes I get image retention.
I'm on my way to the store, hope they can give me a replacement right away...

@BearOso if what you say is true and the whole batch has this problem, then I'm really in a tight spot. This was the best choice for me out of all 27" monitors.

Samsung S27A850D - notorious backlight bleeding
ASUS PB278Q - 6-bit A-FRC panel Asus rep confirmed it's actually "true 8-bit"
HP ZR2740w - high response time
Dell U2711 - high input lag

What else is there under ~700$?

@dremic I do like to keep things dark in my computer room for various reasons. One of them is that I don't see the point of having the lights on when all I do is look at a self-illuminated screen.
Call it what you want, but you should remember professionals (the other kind) do this too in order to get the best image results. ;)

I get to see the bleeding every time I watch a 2.35:1 movie, which is how most of them are. So yeah, I'd say it happens pretty often.

Third, and most important, I worked hard to pay for this monitor so I expect Dell to do the same.

agreed, at that price that shit should be flawless!

hope it gets worked out. have you played games on it? how is the response time?

what makes you think the PB278Q is 6-bit + AFRC out of interest?
YouTube user Guz West pointed me to the user manual where it clearly states "Display Colors 16.7 M(6bit Hi FRC)"
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/LCD Monitors/PB278_UserGuide_English.pdf - page 3-8, fifth from the end

EDIT: Asus rep confirmed it has a "true 8-bit" panel!

@dremic I only played for a short while but I didn't see any ghosting. Then again, I can't say I'm a hardcore gamer...
Tomorrow I'll get an answer from the store, and hopefully a replacement too.

Maybe the new ViewSonic VP2770-LED could be worth a look. Due out 09/25/2012 and slightly above your budget at 799$,

Of course, it might just be a defective one. Be sure to let us know how the new one works.

I'm still skeptical about it, though. The guy on overclockers.co.uk has the image retention, too, and even just these two reports so early on does not bode well, honestly. This isn't something a review would normally cover, and not many would notice it in such a short time frame.

Samsung S27A850D: back-light bleeding
ASUS PB278Q: 6 bit panel (unconfirmed)l, it will suffer from the typical IPS issues
HP ZR2740w: Aggressive anti-glare coating, no menu, dark horizontal brightness stripe, back-light bleeding
Dell U2711: aggressive anti-glare coating, tinting, wide gamut, poor contrast, newer IPS/PLS are better for gaming.
Dell U2713: back-light bleeding, burn-in, uneven colour temperature, tinting, dark horizontal brightness stripe

I fixed the list for you, Samsung wins.

There is a semi-glossy HP ZR2740W now, but who knows when they will be available

Burn-in, color temp issues, and tinting fall under Dell's perfect panel advance replacement don't they?

They should keep sending you monitors until you're happy.

Isn't the Asus using the same panel as the 850D? I thought it was definitely PLS.

Don't know yet.

If it uses the same panel as the 850D then it will be 8 bit.

Sure the Dell can be easily exchanged, but you can do this with any other display, depending on where you can get it.

What other manufacturers or retailers will cross-ship me a new display at no charge to me for 3 years? 5 if I buy the extended warranty. Serious question, as I'm waiting on the 30" version of this for my next monitor.

According to the Viewsonic specs it uses 3H anti-glare, the same type used by the u2711. :(

And so does the new U2713HM. Dont bother yourself to much with that, the spec sheet will state the same for most of the matte displays. It's not until you read a review or see the screen yourself that you can judge how harsh the coating is for that particular model.

Lol thanks :) I was indeed looking forward to these new PLS screens, and that Asus was my first choice.
Yes, it most likely does use a PLS screen. I know their marketing was a bit confusing, but think about it: PLS is derived from IPS, so there's a (small) grain of truth when saying "IPS Technology (PLS Panel)" - let's call it motive. If however it were to use an IPS panel, there would have been absolutely no reason to mention "PLS".

And what do you mean a "semi-glossy HP ZR2740W", like a completely new monitor with the same name?

Don't know yet.

If it uses the same panel as the 850D then it will be 8 bit.
There are 3 posibilities:
1. Asus has a typo in all manuals (I checked several languages)
2. Samsung developed a new PLS panel for them
3. Samsung is lying

It's probably #1 or #2. The 850D is 8 bit. Asus is probably marketing the PB278Q as IPS with the PLS in brackets since IPS is a well known panel type.

Newer ZR2740w's should be semi-glossy. HP sent one to Extra Hardware CZ who already reviewed the original. The only reason to send them another would be to let people know it is semi-glossy, expect to see some more re-reviews..

Exactly, they're using the IPS name to gain popularity and interest. It's a simple and effective marketing technique.

That's speculation. Why didn't HP publish this update somewhere on it's site?
How would I know whether I'm about to buy the new or the old version?

Because most people don't know there are different matte coatings, and, if HP were to put a positive marketing spin on the fact that the newer units have semi-glossy coating and advertise the change current owners would feel ripped off.

They were smart about it, only the hardcore will find out=less exchanges.

How would I know whether I'm about to buy the new or the old version?

IDK. Best to wait a while & see if they become common or phone HP and request one.

Does the new version have a new model number or anything that makes it identifiable?

When the heck is it coming out in the USA????

No clue, as it has already been a month since it was released in Japan and Australia. I'm most likely going to get it from Dell.com once it comes out as long as it's a reasonable price. Dell has a gift card promotion right now (buy $400 GC and get a $75 GC) that ends near the end of this month, so hopefully it happens during that time period.

The guys at the store said they couldn't see any image retention, so I had to go there and show them :D
I should get a replacement tomorrow and I'll keep you posted.

I'd bet money that these Dell IPS displays carry LG LCD panels inside of them.

Have you guys heard of the image retention problem many customers are experiencing with Apple's new Macbook Pro with Retina display? I think you're experiencing the exact same issue.

Check this out...
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034848?start=0&tstart=0
(NOTE: Apple has started censoring posts and even handing out 1 week suspensions to some people for discussing the IR issue)

There's also a Facebook page dedicated to this problem and it's starting to get some traction...
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Apple...Macbook-Pros-with-LG-Displays/515441551804955

So, this is absolutely NOT acceptable, but you are NOT alone.

Good luck with this.

You bet correct son, dell never produced panels, LG have always equipped dell monitors and many others.

Not always but since their switch to IPS around 2010. Before they used Samsung PVA panels in many of their ultrasharp series

Have they had an image retention issue before, or is this a new phenomenon? To be honest, I hope this is new, because then it adds credibility to the idea that we've all simply gotten a bad batch of LG LCD panels installed in our displays.

Nothing that was ever widespread or discussed much on any of their models. To be fair it's only been reported on 1 sample so far of the U2713HM as far as I know so may well be just a faulty version in and amongst plenty which have no issue with it. Guess we will see

I had a U3011 with horrible image retention. Could set something for about a minute and it would stick. I think it might be just bad luck because the replacement was from the same batch and doesn't have the problem.

Once the HP ZR22740w is confirmed as a semi-gloss monitor, I will add it to my 'List of Semi-Glass Monitors' thread. Same for the new Dell U2713HM, if it turns out to be semi-gloss or even semi-matte.

Make that 2 samples :p My replacement still has image retention visible after only 15 minutes.

Te reason why this issue isn't widely discussed is probably because it's hard to see. It's most obvious on a dark (80%) gray background (RGB 47-47-47).
You might think you won't be using such a background too often, but it's exactly what you get in 3ds Max and PS CS6.

Also someone said there's a guy @overclockers.co.uk with the same problem, so make it 3.

Backlight bleeding is even worse on this one. It clearly looks like a yellow stain on any dark background. Watching movies is impossible. The image below is exaggerated, but make no mistake, the bleeding is clearly visible with the naked eye.

Someone at the factory must have wiped their booger off my screen:

Other things I don't like with Dell U2713HM:
- you can't deactivate the power LED
- the USB hub only works if the monitor is turned on; This means if you plug a keyboard or mouse you can't use them to wake the system.

I am honestly disappointed of Dell. I'm going to send it back today or on Monday and get my money back.
The problem is I need a new monitor, and there's nothing else. :( How bad is the response time on the HP ZR2740? Will I see any ghosting in games?

Were the ones you had at least uniform? I see a quite a bit of yellow tinting on that grey pic (maybe it's just the shot), but what about the first?

I'm in the same spot as you. There's nothing interesting out there. I wan't something legitimately good. I don't want a S27A850D that I know someone's going to suggest because it seriously looks like a foregone conclusion that you will have tons of backlight bleed. I don't want to play panel lottery, I just want something at 1440p that isn't glossy and doesn't have a metric ton of QC issues to sift through.

Edit: The 2713 and the Retina MacBook totally both have LG AH-IPS displays (though some MacBooks have Samsung PLS panels that don't exhibit the issue).

There is a fair amount of tinting but it's hard to notice and I wouldn't call it an issue. I believe the first one was better in this regard.

One option would be to wait for the new LM270WQ3 or LM300WQ6 panels from LG, but I have no idea when such monitors will be available.

I'd be willing to keep the Dell for a few months and then sell it at a loss, if only the bleeding wasn't so bad.
