Dell U2711

This is on sale at Dell right now for $899.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=224-8284

Thinking about buying this but have a few questions for those who own this monitor.

1. Is this a good price? Have there been sales in the past where it's been cheaper than this?

2. For this price range, would this be the best IPS monitor to buy? I would be using this monitor primarily for internet, gaming, and photos.

3. Text clarity is extremely important to me, as I do a lot of reading on pc monitors. I don't think I've seen any monitor that has a lower pixel pitch than this - .233. Does this translate to razor sharp text onscreen? This is probably the most important thing for me than anything else. If it doesn't have razor sharp text, then no sale.

4. Are there any retail stores that would carry this monitor, as I would like to see it in person before considering a purchase. Stores like Best Buy only carry low end, crap TN displays. Are there any retail stores that carry higher end monitors like this?

Thanks in advance.

I don't own a U2711 but I can tell you off the bat that $899 is a pretty good price for the U2711. I haven't seen it sell any cheaper than $850 from eBay resellers. For the money, it's hands down the best IPS monitor to buy. The other two top competitors would be the NEC Multisync PA271W and the future Apple LED Cinema 27", both of which will cost you double the DELL with no huge benefits unless you are heavy into photography.

The U2711 does have RAZOR sharp text at .233. When it comes to text clarity, you can't do better than a 2560x1440 IPS display. The only real issue with the U2711 is it supposedly has a thick anti-glare coating which gives the screen a slight "sparkle" effect. I don't know of any stores that carry any displays similar to the U2711. Apple stores do carry the LED Cinema which are similar to the U2711 but they are glossy and have no AG coating.

One other thing to note is that the DELL U3011 ships in 1 month. If you don't mind waiting, the U2711 will most likely see a price cut after the 3011 ships. Or if you have the cash, just buy the U3011 which is pretty much a 30" version of the U2711.

I'm considering buying one, but I'm concerned that the text in windows will be too small. I've got crappy eyes and am currently using a 24" 1920x1200 monitor. Even on that monitor, I have to bump up the text size on a lot of web pages so I can more easily read them. I've never messed with Windows' DPI settings or anything. Would you guys say this is a poor choice for a person like me? Could the problems be easily overcome? Would I be better served by a fleabay 2709w? I do a lot of web browsing and play a lot of PC games. Thanks.

After reading about this monitor for nearly a week, I have finally jumped. Currently waiting for arrival. My main reason for purchasing is simply the extra real estate without having multiple monitors. I make music and being able to have the mixer and sequencer both visible at once on one screen will be a pleasure.

I don't own this monitor but having read the customer reviews for this monitor on Amazon and Cnet, the text is indeed small.

Ashok0 - thanks for the comments. I'd really like to buy this Dell, but am wondering if I'll notice a big difference between my HP ZR24w and the Dell? I don't suppose anyone here owns both the ZR24w and the U2711? If anyone does, is there a big jump in quality between the two monitors?

Hi! This looks and sounds like an excellent monitor. One thing keeps holding me up though; the debate over the anti-glare coating. Can someone who owns this try to take some pics of the screen? The way some people talk you would think Dell plastered an inch thick layer of this on the screen. How bad is it really? Do you guys get the sparkle effect described by some people on your u2711's? Are the whites dirtied up by the anti-glare coating?

I appreciate your help in advance!

You are not going to get much of an idea from a picture. Have you seen other IPS monitors, because from the sound of things, this is pretty much the standard LG IPS AG treatment.

I haven't had the opportunity to see any ips monitors in person :(

Yeah, seems like it. I'm sure there will be future sales. Like an above poster said, once Dell launches the 30" version of this, I'm sure there will be a price drop on the 27" model.

I doubt it. There's enough price difference between the current 30" and this 27" that Dell could just bring in the new 3011 at current 30" prices and leave the 27" where it is.

The 27" ACD is $999 btw..not double

Damn, I was just about to place an order but I missed the sale by hours. Oh well, I'll just wait until the next one.

So i bit the bullet during the sale and the monitor arrived today. Coming from a 2405fpw this was quite the upgrade. Everything is so much better, I didn't even know what I was missing. No dead / stuck pixels or any other obvious flaws. The only thing that slightly bugs me is the ips glow, but its a small price to pay for how good everything else looks. I was expecting some buyers remorse after throwing down close to 1g on a monitor but right now i am not feeling any. This thing is kick ass.

I also bit the bullet during the sale and got it delivered 2 days later. While the picture is amazing and there are no dead pixels, I'm experiencing two of the problems listed somewhere above on this post:
1-There is a high pitch whining sound coming from the psu even when the monitor is turned off and video cable unplugged. The whining is even more noticeable when displaying white images (for instance when you open a new word document)
2-The monitor won't resume from power saving, not even power cycling it. Have to manually unplug DP cable from back of computer and plug back in.
Any advice?

I'm the one that reported the whine in power save mode or when the monitor was off. When I got home that day, I plugged the monitor into a different outlet on my UPS and removed a couple devices from the UPS, and haven't noticed the whine again.

I kind of doubt that removing the other devices or switching outlets did anything, since the UPS has not given me any trouble on that outlet, and stays below 70% load even with a PS3, Xbox 360, 32" TV, PC running near/at 100% load on all CPU cores while stressing the GPU, and two monitors on.

I'd just give it a few days and see if it stops. It could also be worth trying different outlets/power strips, or running it on clean power through a UPS.

I've never experienced that issue with exiting power save, although the monitor does take a while to display an image when first turning on my PC or resuming from standby/hibernate. My understanding is that this is due to the hardware resolution scaling the monitor has (delay when switching resolutions and powering on mentioned in the anandtech review here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2922/2).

I've been very happy with the monitor since the whine stopped the first day. On rare occasions I notice the AG coating, but only in web browsers or text editors, and not even then most of the time. I almost bought a 2nd one during the $900 sale, but I managed to convince myself to hold off till Christmas is over with and paid for, then grab one on the next sale. :)

The resume issue was resolved, apparently after a fresh install of Win 7 and 10.8a drivers. The whining is still there tho... I'm gonna give it till Monday, then I'm sending it back for an exchange.

UPDATE:
Either the whine has diminished considerably or I'm just getting used to it. I'm loving the over saturated reds!

OK, So I have a BenQ 24" (1920x1200) monitor and video card is ATI 5870. Probably at the end of November I'm looking to upgrade my monitor to a 27" or 30".

At this time I'm leaning towards Dell U2711 vs 3008WFP 30-inch. Considering that I have a 24", I may not notice that much of a difference with the 27". Since I game a lot, not sure if the 8ms response time for the 30" will be a problem.

Just checking what are the impressions for the U2711... I know that there are usually DELL coupons but I have not been able to find any for monitors... Anyone know if they have good deals on black Friday ?

Anyone know if there's a DELL monitor replacement coming soon ?
Note: Reading some past posts... I noticed that someone posted that U3011 is coming out soon... The reason I was leaning towards the 27" is because I wasn't sure if a 30" would be too big for my desk... Any 30" owners think that their monitor is too big ?

If there is another monitor suggestion, please let me know.... I'm really looking to spend anything less than 1,500.

Thanks in advance.

I'm also waiting to see what happens with the U3011 before upgrading my 24inch main display (an old Dell 2407wfp).

This comparison might be good:

2711 vs 3011 in terms of size.
http://www.displaywars.com/27-inch-16x9-vs-30-inch-16x10

24 inch vs 2711 ... really only adding size to the sides, but it will be a much finer dot pitch
http://www.displaywars.com/27-inch-16x9-vs-24-inch-16x10

Personally, I'm hoping that the 3011 is some magical improvement in terms of response times but I think in the end the 2711 is a better choice considering how close I sit to the screen.

Having a 2711 now, I'm sadly now wishing they had made a "glare" version that would have cut down the grain issues with the non glare layer. That said, it is a truly incredible monitor. If the price were close I'd go for the 3011. I would go for the 2711 over the 3008 however, but that's a close race. Honestly I think the 3011 could be a good one to wait for, for 3 reasons:

2711 prices will be more reasonable.

If you still prefer the 3008, you can find bargains, again keeping the 2711 reasonable in prices

3011 might be offered in both a Glare (higher contrast, no graininess, but glare factor to deal with) and a non glare version, which would give people their choice.

I'd at least wait the short time to see what gives with the 3011 then make a price/value preference choice from there. 3008's won't sell for long after the 3011 arrives, but they will go pretty cheap!

Thanks for the input. I'm actually not in a rush to buy... Thinking about buying at end November coinciding with black Friday. Hoping to see some deals around that time.

Initially i was leaning towards the 27" but I'm reconsidering and starting to lean towards the 30", but I'm a bit concern about having that big of a monitor on my desk. 30" in users... Any comments ?

I had a 37" monitor on my desk for over a year. Obviously, I do not feel that 30" is overkill in terms of size.

LOL, 37" monitor on your desk ? Damn !!
Can I assume you sat 3-5 feet away from your monitor ?

If that's the case, maybe a 30" is not overkill.... In general, I try to stay away from having 2 video cards... so hopefully my ATI 5870 will be enough :)

Yeah, lots of us had them. :)

I had a 5870 for a little while. It did pretty darn well at 2560x1600, actually. You can always add another when the 6xxx series drops and lowers the prices of the 5xxx series. :)

BTW, When u say you had a 37", did you have a 37" TV ?

I had a friend tell me... why would you spend 1,500 for a monitor when you can get a TV for less than that... I know that most TV's resolution are 1920 x 1080 and dell LCD Monitor 30" is 2560 x 1600.

So which is better ? LCD monitor or TV ?

It was actually a 37" monitor. One of the largest displays ever purposely-built as a monitor in fact, which is one reason (along with its price at the time) that made it so popular. It could be used as a TV if you connected a satellite or digital cable box to it, but rather than having a regular coaxial input like HDTVs do, it had 2 DVI ports...thus it being marketed as a monitor.

Tell your friend it's because 2560x1600 is an extremely high resolution and panels capable of displaying that many pixels are just expensive to produce. That's why 30" monitors cost $1000-$2000 when you can buy a larger 32" HDTV that only runs at 1080p for around $400.

Which is better? For PC use, usually the monitor will be superior due to sharper text and more PC-centric features. For something you're going to use equally for both desktop use and movies/console games, an HDTV may fit the bill. It all depends on how you plan on using it, what features are important to you, and what you're willing to sacrifice.

My intended use for monitor would only be for PC purposes... Internet, gaming and some various PC apps (No photo editing). I suppose I should only stick with LCD monitors vs considering TV's.

Honestly an IPS panel is awesome, but in most cases it can be overkill. If you're lookin for a single monitor a TN panel monitor should suit your needs. It won't be 100% uniform, but it will still look plenty fine for average use.

If you got the money flipping around, the IPS never hurts (they tend to keep resale value).

Throwing in a couple images for size comparison.
My new U2711 right next to one of my P2310H (23").

I received my u2711 this past Thursday and it had a pixel stuck on red that I could not fix myself. I called Dell on Friday, talked with some gentleman who was not American, and the replacement arrived Tuesday. The replacement is problem free and I love it. The AG doesn't bother me. I have no glossy screens including my TV.

Got mine yesterday and I love it. by far the best monitor I have ever owned.

To anyone that has experience with the U2711, what are your settings such as brightness/ contrast and other monitor settings?

Right now I have
Brightness: 30
Contrast 50
Input color format: RGB
Mode selection: Graphics
Preset Modes: Standard (tried sRGB but found it too washed out for my liking)

Any recommendations on these type of settings would be very helpful.

Anyone tried using triple monitors using the U2711 and two smaller monitors in landscape mode?
I'm trying to find two 22"/23" monitors that line up with the U2711 (height wise)
