Dell U2711

Every single LCD that is matte has an AG coating, and I honestly never been bothered by it... some are worse than others, and some people are more sensitive to it.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone know if there are any types of displays on the shelf at Best Buy that have AG coatings similar to the U2711? Bah, I'm half tempted to just pull the trigger on this thing and if I don't like it try the towel removal trick. It's only $899.

Buy it and if you find that you don't like the AG coating within the 21 day return period return it. If you can afford to buy it, it's not that hard of a decision :) The towel trick is quite cool, but I like my 5 year warranty too much to do it and I'm not that bugged by the coating anyway.

To see the U2711 without an AG coating, just go to any Apple store and demo the 27" iMac, which uses the same 27" panel as the U2711. The 27" iMac has a glossy screen with no AG coating. It also uses some different internal hardware, but it should give you an idea of how the U2711 would look like if you decided to peel off its coating.

Is that all the coating is, just a layer that you can peel off?

After some preparation yes, but that preparation involves taking apart the screen, soaking the front of the panel with wet paper towels for a period of time, then carefully separating the AG coating "film" that has loosened off the panel. As a side effect of doing this, your warranty is irrevocably voided.

Ok, I think the U2711 is a great display even with AG coating on, so you should buy it, if you have the money, if you really don't like it, you can take it back during the return period. :)

Also, AG coating will not bother 99% of the users. Maybe it was bothering me only, because I am using a 27" iMac at home, and I really like it. So when I bought the U2711 as an office display for my macbook pro, I was disappointed that it had different looks.

Also, its not the first time I took things apart, so I was quite sure that at least I do not totally damage the unit.

Plus, I bought this unit when it was on sale for $580 only at the local store, which is still a nice sum of money, but I had some worse losses in life, so its not a big deal (the worst scenario could have happened is that I could have had to take it back to repair the damages out of warranty). Luckily I succeeded and now I am totally satisfied with the display.

And the stand alone 27" apple cinema display is coming this summer if someone wants glossy.

After reading thru all the recent threads here, I've finally narrowed my search for a monitor to the U2711! The only thing holding me back now is these persistent rumors that Apple may be launching a mythical U2711 killer.

The thing is... is Apple even making computers and displays anymore? WWDC was this week and there were no references to anything Macintosh... only iPhone and iPad. Apple seems to be exiting the computer business for mobile devices.

I actually think the main difference between the U2711 and the Future 27" Apple monitor will be that the U2711 has an AG coating and the Apple will be nice and glossy. The other difference will be that the Apple monitor will cost more and have a whole lot less connectivity options, but hey it will match the aesthetics of your iPad and iPwnone 4 :)

I bought two - U2711's for $870 each about a month ago. They were shipped directly from Dell to me with a 3 year warranty.
The price fluctuates depending on the mix of sellers at any given time.
I've seen it as low as $800 on eBay.

ebay:

yeah I saw two of those sellers go down to $750 shipped a few weeks back before bing's cb. Mostly they hovered around 800-850shipped when 2 sellers were competing. Then one of them disappeared and the other guy is now sellng them at 899 as you see. With bing cb i couldn't pass it up, even at 899 i think its still a steal because you're getting back $72

Bing cashback ends in a month though! so hurry and buy one if you want to use that!

Guess microsoft doesn't think it needs to give shoppers any kickback now and they will keep all that money for themselves, but as soon as the cashback dissapears so will I, back to google shopping :)

Well I had seen that article, but it's pretty old. I'd love to see a 27" Apple Cinema display in June. But considering it's already June, and Steve Jobs didn't as much as hint about any displays at WWDC this week, I'm starting to think that summer will come and go and we'll still have no new Apple displays. :(

If you don't want to wait for an Apple 27" monitor which may or may not be released is the NEC PA271W which is coming out soon:

Just out of curiosity, is the AG coating on the Apple Cinema LED 24" or 30" anything like the U2711 AG coating?

If the 24" ACD has an AG coating, it certainly is not visible at all. I actually doubt that the 24" does have one, since it's a glossy display. On my 24" ACD, there is zero sparkle/grain effect. Same as my 24" iMac screen.

The 30" ACD probably does have an AG coating, but I have not examined one close up, so I can't say for sure.

Hey guys, what do you use to clean these displays? I'm a little hesitant to try anything since I know it's not glass. Thanks.

I use a mix of distilled water and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle... then spray it on a microfiber and clean the screen.

I use that for all LCD screens...

This, and never, ever use Windex or other ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia will ruin your LCD monitor.

For those of you, who hate the Anti Glare coating of the U2711, check out this glossy U2711 of mine:

Ohhhh /drool, I've always wanted to do that to my 3007.

Did you essentially just cover the screen of the LCD panel with wet paper towels for several hours (after disassembling of course)? If so, how long did you let the screen soak?

Yep, in case of most (but not all) LCD panels, the glue that holds the AG coating is water based, and the material of the AG coating usually (but not always) lets water through, so by soaking the AG coating, the water will loose up the glue, and you can simply remove the AG coating. After two hours of soaking, most (but not all) panels will let you remove the coating without problem. You have to try it out to see, whether it works for the 3007 or not (probably it will). The most importanat thing: if you feel resistance during the removal, stop it, because if you tear up the polarizer (the layer beneath the AG coating), you are in big trouble (the polarizer can also be replaced, but it's not easy to get a 30" polarizer sheet and reapply it).

For more information, check out my step-by-step instructions for the U2711.

For more studies, check out LumenLab's forums. They perfected the various techniquies for the AG removal, because its essential for DIY projectors. :))

For more U2711 coating removal testemonies, check out this thread (djdude is the guy, who did the whole thing first, he gave me the inspiration).

Awesome, thank you for the information mrsteve.

I remember seeing that thread over in the Lumenlab forums a couple years ago and thinking "man I'd love to do that to my monitor", but I didn't want to risk bricking my new baby (new at the time anyway).

Seeing your results however has given me a change of heart. I think I'm going to give it a shot on my next free weekend. I just hope my AG hasn't completely baked onto the monitor glass over the past couple years.

Seems the Dell SB 20% coupon email stacks with the 10% coupon that been going around on deal sites, so I just got two U2711 ordered for $1600(+tax) from the Dell SB website.

Wow I think I am gonna order one of these guys for sure. Just one last question, is it safe to say that the AG coating is less obvious in a dark or dimly lit room? I will mainly be using this for movies and gaming, I rarely have any bright fluorescent lights on.

Artificiary,

do not forget to post your results. I think doing this with a 30", you'll be be a first timer.

Ashok0,

IMHO the AG coating is the same obvious in a dark room because of the sparky, grainy appearance. But some actually like the AG coating, so you'll have to see and decide.

I can't findout the deal like that. Can you let me have the link or where is the good deal? Thanks.

Also, in my Windows update I see this optional update item related to u2711 and the info is rather vague.
Does anyone know what is this for?

edit: As soon as I installed the optional update, the Color Management control panel which was open during the installation refreshed to display that Dell U2711 is the default profile. I wonder if that's all this update does - to automate the default color profile selection?

Glad to see another with no problems. I personally LOVE mine. I was very nervous about buying one because of the thousands of complaints but I got none.

Just so people know, I go graphic design (brand development), photoshop photography editing and 3d design and this monitor is great.

What did you use to calibrate your monitor?

No, not the greatest set of speakers in the world, but for someone that just wants decent sound an a clean desk top you can not beat this sound bar on your U2711

Is there any reason I should get the 3008wfp over this(other than the obvious difference in resolution and screen size)?

I would say no. If 16:9 is fine for you it should be fine.

In addition, according to www.prad.de, the U2711 has a pretty good sRGB mode in terms of color calibration, so it should be a good screen in that regard.

Great, thanks. What about in comparison to the NEC PA271W? I haven't seen any good comparisons between the two.

I ordered one last night, from the seller you linked, and it shipped today. It is coming from the seller, though, and not from Dell. The seller said it will have the warranty on it, so I hope that is true.

The PA271W will have the same panel, different electronics, and a higher price. Yup, I just checked and it's a lot more here in Canada.

It will allow internal calibration but likely will have an average to poor sRGB mode. If you are not doing professional photography and wide gamut printing, stick with the U2711.
