Defiance Discussion Thread

I loved the beta. Only played for about 90 minutes before I realized that this game is for me. Since they are wiping the servers I didn't want to replay everything. Preordered on Steam!

On the Syfy channel starting In April. Looks decent but still not sure how it will tie in.

My guess would be walk-ons with player-character look-a-likes on occasion if they ever bounce between the region the TV show takes place and the region the game takes place. If not, updates on how the game region has been changing throughout the TV show's storyline.

I read a thing on how like some big accomplishments that happen in the game by a player would be mentioned in the show. Like for example, did you hear about how Leroy Jenkins went into that hellbug nest in xxx and killed the queen only using a pistol? Obviously would be worked in some way but you get the idea.

I'm in. Although I've questioned the longevity of the game I found a pretty good deal on the Digital Deluxe version for $50 and decided to bite.
Steam deal isn't worth it IMO because I don't play Rift and with the money I saved I can buy tons of stuff in the cash shop if I decide to, i.e...lock boxes, vehicles, weapons

If anyone is interested CDKeysDiscount has the standard edition for $40 and the deluxe for $50

Damn you why didn't you post sooner lol

I would have gotten the Deluxe edition. I ordered it on Steam yesterday. Game will probably be terrible after a couple weeks, but I can see myself enjoying it enough to get my money's worth.

wish i got a chance to try out beta, i was late hearing about this. i was instead playing neverwinter, working on my race car and now im getting sucked into Eve for the first time.... but this does look interesting but im considered it could be a large terd. hmm

haha...sorry man, I just stumbled upon it late last night...

I've been holding off in lieu of finding a good deal, I've had the standard edition in my Steam cart for the past 3-4 days, just couldn't pull the trigger

I played the beta for one hour and loved the game so much I preordered and haven't looked back. Got all 3 tiers of rewards on steam and redeemed all 120 ark codes. Ready for midnight here we come!!!

I'll be playing tonight as well (hopefully). I'm preloading now, but my connection sucks ass sometimes.

I'm sure as it gets closer to release the servers will bog down. I was able to get 1.5mbps Sunday morning the 10gb download took a few hours.

I am at work now so will be downloading as soon as I get home at midnight. Add me on steam for some co-op fun dreamcast87 (I am using the PS3 wireless headset for now until new one arrives it works sometimes and others it doesn't so if my voice doesn't come through forgive me)

I guess the game is up right now. I still have 50 minutes to go on my download though.

Okay. I bit the bullet and got the game.

I actually didn't have much interest, but I watched the 14-minute preview of the TV show on the SyFy channel site and I have to admit, it was a lot better than I expected; in fact I got pretty pumped up. The budget for the show looks pretty big, like "Battlestar Galatica" level for the effects, but it was the quirky conversation between the alien girl and the human dude in the car that clinched it for me. Really nicely done. (Cool use of a Jonny Cash song.)

I guess the guy who did "Farscape" also created this show. It doesn't look like some lame video game tie-in but a well made production.

Just bought the standard edition game from Steam, and I couldn't figure out how to download the client, until I found this thread.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/224600/discussions/0/828934913371949638/

Had to find my Steam keys in my game library, then paste them (I had three keys) at the Trion website (I already had registered with Trion, since I had a Rift account there already). Then just downloaded the game client from the Trion site.

Taking about 2 to 3 hours to download the game. Right now, the downloading is averaging 1.48 MB/sec for me (I'm on a 24Mbps connection).

I'm launching now. I will post initial impressions shortly. I have no expectations for this game either way. Kind of just decided to get it yesterday, so we'll see.

The game has so many problems I'm not even going to bother typing them out.

From graphics to UI to chat.

It's strangely satisfying to kill mutants though.

It's pretty damn fun and addicting despite everything wrong with it. The open world and random people showing up helping is fun.

If it had open world pvp... wow

Yeah, it's pretty fun.

The graphics were really smooth on my system, better than I expected.

First 20 minutes or so though, I was a bit bored, and was a bit let down.

But when I got out of the newbie area, got my vehicle and hitting the more populated areas, it started really clicking with me. It's pretty cool doing missions and random people coming along on the same missions, clearing out the enemies.

I hope they do dynamic events, like in Rift, as it kind of seems like it's in place already -- maybe they do as I haven't gotten too far yet in the main mission. Pretty cool to get credit for a mission, just by being in the same mission area. LIke in Rift, or GW, it does seem the enemies get tougher if there are more people in the area fighting with you.

It does have some annoyances, like the console-like menu, not many graphic settings (or there any? I want to increase the gamma), chatting menu could use work, but it is addicting.

I was ready to quit in the first half hour, but it's 4 hours later and I'm still playing. Definitely like an online version of Borderlands.

The combat gameplay is very addictive. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I don't know how it'll be after 20 hours or so. The loot that you get isn't much better than default equipment, so there isn't much motivation for better stuff. Most of the quests are exactly the same. I'm having a lot of fun now, but I'm not sure how it's going to hold up later. I think they'll need to break up PvE and PvP loot. That way you can get better and better stuff for PvE but also keep PvP competitive.

Looks interesting, but I think I'm going to wait a few weeks to see what people are saying then. Besides, I have a sneaking suspicion that this game is going to be pretty heavily discounted fairly quickly.

Any of you Playing on the US servers? I'm under the same SN in game if you want to get a [H] Group going.

How long did it take you to get your key from them? It has been 45 minutes for me and still no key.

They put the game up early last night so I was able to get a few hours in. Game is amazing! Here are the only potential issues I see....

Is Marin the only continent or does the game change settings?
There are only 3 competitive PVP maps?
What is the "end game"?
Mutants / Hellbugs are the only enemies?

You think so? I haven't been very satisfied with any of them so far.

Yea, I'm quite happy with the sounds and the vaporizing effects and such. They all have a different feel to them as well. Every time I think I'm set on two weapons, I try some others and switch it again.

1. Only Marin for now. I think DLC will introduce new areas...
2. Multiplayer consists of contracts, competitive MP and Shadow War
3. Gameplay will consist of main missions, side missions, challenges and Arkfalls
4. No, there several different enemies, i.e...Raiders, Ninety-Niners, Scrappers, Hellbugs, Mutants

What other games can you all compare gameplay and things like that to?

For people that normally don't play MMO type games how would they get along with this?

I think that's who they had in mind -- people that don't normally play MMO games. It's basically Borderlands but an online version, not a full-fledged MMORPG. It's almost like playing a single-player FPS game (although this is in 3rd person view) and you just happen to play in a persistant open-world that have other players around you.

If you're doing a mission, someone might come along who has the same mission and both of you will get credit for finishing it -- no need to group, just by being in the vicinity, you'll help others and yourself. If there are several people there, I think the mission adjusts the difficulty and it gets harder -- more enemies, bigger enemies -- like in Guild Wars.

I'd argue that Borderlands is a better game in terms of skills -- the special powers were much more fun to use in Borderlands -- and the weapon drops aren't as fun either, and the humor isn't there, but for what it is -- a light MMO that you basically just shoot stuff, it's pretty addicting.

No classes, you just work toward builds by spending your points, similar to Borderlands, but Borderlands had classes that limited the type of powers and skills you could specialize in. In Defiance, there's isn't that limitization -- you can specialize in any power or weapon.

Also there aren't any social hubs, like in Guild Wars, at least not that I've seen. So the social component, while there, isn't forced on you.

It's got Arkfalls -- kind of like dynamic events in Rift, the other MMO game that Trion made -- so that's fun. Usually a lot of players are there, fighting the enemies and sometimes a huge boss will pop out. You'll get XP and sometimes some decent drops.

You can group and there are co-op maps as well as PVP, but I haven't tried that yet. I've just been roaming the world by myself, picking up missions, doing Arkfalls, modding my weapons, etc. Definitely cool when there are other people in your area when you're fighting.

There's no way there is only one continent.

It's been said time and time again that the primary overworld at launch consists of the Bay Area, i.e...Corte Madera, Marin, Mount Tamalpais, San Francisco & Sausalito

I don't know if this is considered as one "continent" (as it should, since it's technically a region) by seasoned MMO players as I'm still new to genre...

It took several hours. I ordered at around 11:15 Sunday night and stayed up until around midnight waiting for a key so I could start preloading.
By 12:20am I still didn't have a key so I posted in the their support forum, I would suggest doing the same if you haven't received a key yet.
Also, make sure they give you both the game key and the pre-order key so you can get the Dodge Charger and other bonus items.

Thanks for answering my questions.

NP, I should have clarified that it's the surrounding Bay Area which is much larger than just Marin County, i.e...San Francisco, Sausalito, Mt. Tamalpais, Corte Madera

Played 3-4 hours today so far. Having fun, the questing doesn't seem forced at all in this game. Plenty of side missions and doing them seems to open up the main quest mission further. My social interaction has been limited thus far. Hopefully later on people will actually benefit from talking to one another

Yea, if anyone wants to get this game, I suggest doing it now rather than later.

I can't see there being all that many people running around doing the quests and such at a later time. I don't think I've done a single quest where there hasn't been someone else working on the same one.
