Defiance, honestly, seems like a bad version of FireFall. I've already seen footage of it and read-up on it, and it almost seems like a blatant, bad, second-hand copy of what FireFall is doing, including with some of the creatures, the way "dynamic" creature boss fights are supposed to happen etc.

See, I'm actually more interested in it than FireFall because what I've seen of the gameplay it's got a little less of the homo-tastic anime styling and jetpackery, and is more of a Mass Effect cum BF2142 with quest design by the people who did Rift. Which was pretty good in terms of story. More promising to me than FireFall, at least.

Excuse me for expressing in a rather non-articulate way for a moment... lolwtfbbq!

"Homo-tastic jetpackery", I'm almost falling out of my fucking chair, ha ha.

No, but seriously, FireFall is truly an excellent game. I've been playing the shit out of it and it's not as "homo-tastic" (LOL) as it might seem. The gameplay is friggin' tight, fast-paced and the skills with the Battleframes are great. The visuals, such as in the environments especially, are seriously high-res and absolutely gorgeous.

I admit that upon first seeing Defiance, it did catch my attention. I'm still a bit interested to see how it turns out, but it both looks and plays way too "light-footed", very much like a console feel and look to it, and I'm not seeing any deep storyline either.

I don't see one in FireFall yet either, so I'd say they're on equal footing there, but in terms of the gameplay, creativity, visuals, general aesthetics and quality, FireFall is the prize horse, IMO.

So shove your "jetpackery" up your... nah, j/k, lol.

I also think this looks better than Firefall. I tried Firefall for a while and gave up on it. I just found it incredibly boring and I didn't enjoy their PVP.

I find it to be quite boring for only the start of the game. I think I'll be skipping it entirely.

Can't imagine shooting at bunch of dumb AIs would be fun, Firefall got boring after a hour this probably won't be any different.

this is like Firefall with less dev time and less planned changes before launch(since its rushed out to meet a TV show launch).

Is this a pay to play mmo like WOW? Or is it free like Guild Wars 2.

At the moment it's pay-to-play ($59 for base game, $39 Season DLC pack) however Trion haven't been that forthcoming with their plans if the show fails.
The only thing that turns me off is that Trion has never come straight out and said there's never going to be subscription model at some point, which is left open to interpretation.

I'd give it a shot if it was free for the base game, but I refuse to buy games at full retail price then be basically forced to buy addons in game to keep up.

then how do you expect them to keep the games going.

Got Neverwinter and Defiance betas this weekend. Might not be able to leave the house.

Yeah i'm definitely going to use this to judge if I pre-order or not. Figure I'll give it the weekend and then go from there.

They don't need a subscription, considering that there are options to buy different perks (double exp, more loot) and items from the real money store.

I went ahead and pre-ordered the game after a couple hours of beta. Really digging it, not 100% why, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it's a change of page from the fantasy titles that I find becoming more and more stale.

i know this is PC area but i already preordered the limited edition for 360 lol

Brings up another discussion in itself. I'm not really getting that consolitis feeling for the most part. I will say this, I had a hell of a time figuring out how to QUIT OUT of the game haha.

How's the game running on your system does it feel laggy, are you able to max out the quality settings and still get smooth frame rate online?

Runs smooth as butter. I have yet to see any framerate issues whatsoever.

Yep I'm not having any issues either, though I'm annoyed wit a few things.
*How do you form groups to play?
*How the hell does voice chat work?

Well I've put a few hours into this beta and regretfully am uninstalling. Didn't really feel it, it feels clunky and dated. Things like the gunplay, or the enemy AI and their movements - like something out of a game from 5-10 years ago. All in all about as direct a console port as it gets, they put zero effort into reworking it for PC -- there are essentially no video settings, and menus are obviously designed for thumbsticks (radial).

Environments seem imaginative and ambient music was cool, but graphics and visual quality were only skin deep - get up close to stuff and its console city. My videocard downclocked itself nearly to idle and game still ran at solid 60FPS 2560x1440 Directx9, so I'm pretty sure an integrated HD3000/HD4000 GPU could handle this game fine - thats not a compliment.

Ive read comparisons to Borderlands, but sorry, Borderlands is in a whole 'nuther league. Not sure how this is a $60 title, feels more like a techdemo or a F2P at best.

for some reason im digging this game and going to be per-ordering if i still feel the same way come end of the betas weekend.

need something to hold me over till star citizen

I'm digging it. Dunno, to each his own.

Don't think it's anything special per say, but it is a huge change of pace to the same WoW fantasy hotkey bashing BS every other developer keeps pushing out claiming it's "new and innovative". I'm also in the Neverwinter beta for the 2nd weekend, and Defiance is leaps and bounds ahead of that pile of closed-world "D&D" garbage. The difference is NW is F2P, so most people probably expected it to be garbage anyway. SPOILER: You were right.

I don't see a ton of longevity with Defiance but I see myself playing it for 60-90 days which to me is pretty good these days with all of the complete crap being released on the market. I'll play and watch the forums in hopes that Trion listens to suggestions and continues to make changes to the game. The only thing unsettling to me is the fact that is multi-platform, which eludes to the fact that anything beyond MINOR changes will be hard to make across the consoles and the PC. We'll see.

And Borderlands is not a good comparison.

Having been in the alpha for the past few weeks, there's no way this game is going to make it for the long haul, at least on the PC side.

Isn't this the game that's tying in to the TV Show? How does that work?

I wish they would collaborate with Funcom and slap the fighting engine onto The Secret World's story. We'd have a winner. Bargain basement at best right now though.

Do what I do. Approach every MMO with the LOWEST possible expectations. It's much harder to be let down. I mean when is the last time an actual GOOD MMO was released that had the power of keeping it's players around for more than 90 days? It's not going to happen again anytime soon so I just accept that mediocre games will keep my attention 2-3 months and then I will move on to something else, with single player game filler inbetween. It's working out pretty well. :)
