Dead Space PC controls suck balls

like i said playing dead space with kb + mouse is like trying to play resident evil with kb+mouse

If there is doubt about a PC game (consolized port, bad controls, etc) people are more likely to pirate it out to see just how bad the problems are, that is if there is no demo available.
oh I see now. if the controls are really as bad as the reviews and users are claiming then they deserve to have the game pirated for being too lazy and/or cheap to properly implement pc controls.

The controls need to be tweaked with your mouse. When the game is first installed, there is a nasty lag with mouse movement in the menus.Setting my rez to 1920x1080 helped a little. Also with Vsync there is a 30fps cap that is thankfully uncapped with VSYNC OFF.Still a little funky in game so I set Mouse Sens.(in game)and adjusted DPI settings on my G9 mouse and ALL IS WELL..YMMV!!..

g1xx3r, I appreciate the info. I was worrying that the game wouldn't be worth it with a mouse... instead I'd have to resort to "blehful" aiming with my 360 controller.

well thats only one somewhat positive review of the controls. most still seem very very discouraging.

Yeah, but he may be the only one to have put a little effort into it. My copy is downloading from D2D right now. I'm encouraged that with a little tweaking, I can get similar results.

Sometimes reviewers (even PC reviewers) have been known to not know that much about tweaking PCs/Games/etc. Granted, they shouldn't have to if they're reviewing an out of the box experience. However, I somehow doubt that the game can't be set up in a decent way with a bit of effort. I guess I'll find out in a few hours.

Yeah I've been wondering the above as well.

It seems that the general consensus about it is that it feels laggy/floaty.

That's a commong problem when Vsync is enabled. Perhaps it's enabled out of the box/recommended for certain speccs and the reviewers don't bother looking into the settings/are not tweakers?

Most reviewers seem to be non-enthusiasts/non-tweakers... irksome to see issues with a game when they didn't even take the time to configure it correctly

Vsync was enable by default and capped @30fps..After my adjustment, menu mouse is spot on and so is in game.Initially the mouse movement was HORRIBLE..I would move the mouse, then the cursor would move like it was tracking a spot on the screen.I had to guesstimate where it would stop to change a setting..Now..its perfect!

I agree. Even on the PC, gamers shouldn't be REQUIRED to do any tweaking for a good experience. I'm just saying that being enthusiasts, we should be able to get something working, and enjoy the game. Until I see it though, I'll reserve judgment on it.

I also have to wonder what level of lag and float we're talking about here. Is it like when a Quake 3 player turns off v-sync, triple buffering, etc. to get a snappy response at the expense of smoothness, and then complains at a couple milliseconds of lag on anything else? If so, I can deal with the float. If it's really squishy, then I'll definitely have to make some adjustments. Even with a floaty mouse, I'm inclined to think I'd do better than with a gamepad.

Only a couple more hours until I'm off work. :)

Wouldn't that mean that they're running the mouse through software instead of hardware? I know that I always make sure every game that allows it has Hardware Mouse turned on. A lot less lag & very few issues with Vsync when used.

I would hardly call bit-tech.net non-enthusiasts or non-tweakers. they are one of the best enthusiast sites on the net and said the controls are awful.

"Dead Space isn't an easy game to like and a lot of that is down to one very simple thing; the controls. The root of those control problems? Three words: it's a port".

"The controls however are a totally different matter; they are just plain awful. They are sticky, unresponsive and stiff "

Doesn't mean all of them are savvy to tweaking a game to work to their own preferences. Not all hardware nuts are great at OSes/games/etc...

Note the "Most"... meaning Not All

yes I understand. I just wanted to make sure that people realize its not just clueless reviewers having issues with the controls. that site is every bit as Hard as Hardocp. ;)

I went to Target, Wallmart and Shitstop and none of them recieved any copies of Dead Space..

The clerk I was talking with at gamestop asked his coworker if they got any, and that bitch looked at me, and said we got one but it's for a reserve. Fucker has beef with me because I returned an open Warhammer Online pre-order without the code to him once.

I personally have doubts... If I was a game reviewer and I noticed a problem with the mouse settings I would try tweaking them to fix the issue. Then, regardless of whether I was able to fix the issue, just make it a little better, of make no real impact at all, I would REPORT MY EFFORTS AND RESULTS.

The fact that Joe Martin just complained about the mouse without reporting on what he did to fix it leaves me confused and uncertain and in doubt of his ability as a PC game reviewer.

Vsync is definitly the culprit here.Even @19x10 I enabled Vsync and control went to shit.A bigger issue is that with Vsync disable, the framerate jumps to about 120-166fps!!No matter what I throw at it ie 16xAF 4xAASS the framerate doesnt drop. After a few minutes,my temps rise and I get the dread nvlldkm BSOD..Cant seem to find cfg files to adjust the cap to 60..I know the GTX280 kicks ass but DAAMN!!

yeah Im hearing the "vsync causing crazy lag" thing quite a bit. the thing is I dont want tearing either. it may not be a problem but in most games I do run vsync.

Disabled VSYNC and tweaked the mouse settings a little. It certainly doesn't feel like TF2 or anything, but it works fine. Enjoying the game immensely.

Just got it.

Confirmed: Vsync is causing the mad lag. It defaults to on and basically unplayable with it.

Turning Vsync off makes it perfectly smooth and natural. How can these reviewers be so stupid/uninformed about graphics technology? Vsync causing input lag is nothing new.. I get it with Doom 3 even worse than I do with this game, yet Doom 3 is a perfectly fine PC game?

Anyone try forcing Vsync through ATI/nVidia drivers? I'd try but I can never get those to work (I remember trying to force AA in HL2 through my drivers with no success).

There is some tearing, but it's very little.

Too bad those early reviews probably turned off a lot of potential buyers.

It's promising to hear there's a solution to this. My question is how do the devs not notice this? Are they all running the same cloned PCs? I mean, com on people! It's not like it's a problem halfway through the game or on a certain level, but it's funked from the start.

OK, I figured out what makes the game feel so damn weird to me. For some reason, when you are looking around, mouse movement is extremely slow if you are near a wall or low detail area. If you pan by an area with a lot of detail or objects further away, the mouse moves quickly. As such, when you are fighting enemies, as they run along walls your mouse moves agravatingly slow, with you having to repeatedly pan your mouse to track them, while if the enemies are in a detail heavy scene you have to be very careful about your mouse movements or you will scroll right past them. I initially thought this might be something to do with Vsync, but after enabling the option in my NV control pane and ingame settings I found that all this did was make the game run a choppy mess, with the controls still behaving as before. Is anyone else having this problem? It seems to be the most pronounced in aiming mode. That said, the game runs very well on 8800GTX, with the game running super super smoothyl at 1920x1200 with everything turned on to the max. I just wish I could get my controls working smoothly. I am running a logitech G5 mouse with the latest version of the Setpoint software.

Like G1xx3r, however, I did get a BSOD when running the 178 drivers. After installing the 180 Beta just released today, however, I haven't had a crash yet.

Just for the hell of it, I fired up the game again and set all my ingame details to low to see if this would improve the game. What happened is very similar to what I posted above, with the reduced graphic detail the controls become more sluggish. With the game set on low details, the mouse controls were so slow that the mouse barely moved even at the highest DPI settings. What the hell is wrong with the controls in this game, and why did I just waste $60 bucks on this turd without waiting for some reviews of the pc version? As is, I have now spent the entire afternoon trying to get the controls resolved, downloading different video drivers to get around BSOD, and still am left with a game that is by all means unplayable. To top it off, the game refuses to recognize my Logitech rumblepad so I stuck with the keyboard mouse control combo. If PC gaming ever dies, it companies like EA's fault that shovels unfinished shit like this out the door and then expects the consumer to run around and try and find solutions to their own broken software.

Not sure what that could be. Are you saying this happens ALL the time?

The aiming is very slow in "aim mode", which it should be, because it's meant to be a percision shooting mode.

Make sure you have vsync OFF both ingame and in the control panel, and just to be sure, make sure your nvidia settings are set to allow the game to control everything (i.e make sure it's not forcing any crazy AA settings or stuff like that in the control panel that could reduce performance/compatability)

By the way, I am running 178.13 set and haven't had any BSODs on my end

On your machine, does the aiming and view panning speed jump from fast to slow depending on the location and surroundings, through? Is this is the way it supposed to be? When you in a low detail corridor with an enemy running at you, the mouse is practically glued to the screen and you really have to fight it to get it to move. I you are fighting in effect laden more detailed scene, however, the mouse moves too fast. This doesn't seem at all like precision aiming to me.

I have all my settings in the NV control panel set to application preference, with Vsync disabled in game. Nothing seems to have help the situation.

Just launched it and set all settings to low. I had no trouble aiming, it was no different than in high quality mode

I just grabbed this game for the PS3 last night and the controles for the console arent all that great either. It took me a while to get use to them, but after you do, the game is an absolute fright fest! Im loving this game!

...or everyone could quit b*tching.

I bought it for PC, and it plays like a charm on my mouse and keyboard. (and runs great all maxed out too)

Of course, I have a 360, and i tested my 360 controller setup on my PC (you can either use a wired 360 controller or u can use wireless (with the $20 microsoft 360 USB adapter for PC), and it plays just like it does on the xbox 360 using that.

Sooooooo.... why were we complaining again?

Oh Resident Evil 4 for pc?

well geez, i must agree, the keyboard/mouse controls for that gamed sucked on PC... but once again, just slap your xbox 360 controller on your PC, do a quick 2 minute remap, and your good to go.

If Only I had this much time to b*tch about such stupid minor things, I guess I would be a lot less productive too.

Use common sense folks, there's allways alternatives if the keyboard/mouse for a port dont seem right (not that they aren't for Dead Space on PC, as I stated, they feel fine, other then the option menu mouse cursor.)

I wish it was that simple, Beavermatic. Even with Vsync off, as some have suggested, the controls are still seriously knackered on some systems like mine. I tried installing FRAPS to record a video of what is happening ingame with the controls, but the program automatically caps your ingame FPS at 30 and for some reason when the app is running in record mode the mouse movement is fine. The funny thing is, enabling Vsync in the ingame options, which also seems to cap the FPS at 30, introduces a huge lag with mouse movement which renders the game unplayable. There is literally a half second delay between when you move the mouse, and when the pointer moves. This happens on both menus, and ingame. I have still yet to find an effective way to normalize the speed of the mouse so that it isn't dreadfully slow when in corridors and enclosed areas, and uncontrollably quick in more detailed sections. I mean, literally, I have to pan my mouse across my pad five or six times to get my character viewpoint turned around when at the dead end of a corridor. When out in an open, effect laden area, however, just a few inches of mouse movement accomplish the same thing. It is incredibly frustrating to control.

Just for reference, when in corridor areas my FPS are around 130-150FPS on my setup where mouse movement is very slow. In more detailed areas where my mousemovement is improved and more responsive my FPS seem to be around 90 FPS.

Picked this up today despite the complaints about controls.

It's true; with vsync on, the mouse floats around and it's extremely annoying. Turning it off fixed that issue, then I turned up the mouse sensitivity in game and moving/aiming is great.

I noticed some blurring in ground textures so I used Nvidia control panel to force AF at 16x and it cleared up. The game looks really good and so far (a little into ch3), it's a lot of fun.

Thats a shame. I havent it on the PC but was lucky to get it on the PS3. I did so for the simple fact that EA does horrible ports.

Its a shame, because the PS3 version is easily in the top 10 best games I have ever played. In terms of atmosphere, this game is the best I have seen in all my days.

Game is a work of art and its a shame so many PC users wont get to enjoy that.

oh I see now. if the controls are really as bad as the reviews and users are claiming then they deserve to have the game pirated for being too lazy and/or cheap to properly implement pc controls.

As a programmer, I say nothing deserves piracy. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet and don't buy it. If the experience is worth pirating... then its worth waiting until the game comes down in price to match the flaws... and that price should never be free.

Might the problem be that everyone having difficulties with PC controles just has shitty mouse/keyboard? Or they dont know how to truely optomize the mouse/keyboard settings? Since there are some who are having no problems on the PC with their controles, Im leaning towards user related error in this case....

yes those reviewers like bit-tech.net must be using a shitty mouse and keyboard. problem solved.

how can a keyboard even be shitty in the first place? do I need to overclock it to make a game more responsive?? damn I could be a pro gamer if mom would just buy one of those fancy gaming keyboards...

Dude, I was just throwing a thought out there. And honestly, I'd put my Razer and Lycosa up against anything that came from Dell/HP/(insert name here) anyday. There are many settings and options on this set that make it IMHO the best out there. I have never had a problem with control in any PC game I played with this set up. I had a G15 before the Razor that I thought was awsome till I actually played with the Razor. You just have to experience it to understand I guess.

I am using a G5 with the latest version of setpoint. I have tried using both the setpoint and OS mouse acceleration and speed implementation within the utlility, both with no luck in the game.

I have a feeling this is some sort of timing or synchronization issue. As I have said repeatedly, my control problems stem from there being a huge difference in mouse speed depending on the how graphically / CPU demanding of a scene you are in. If the area is particularily taxing, the mouse moves very quick, if you are in an area where there is little going on, your mouse moves very, very, very slow. One would thnk that enabling Vsync would fix this, but turning on this feature either through the NV control panel or the ingame settings introduces a huge input lag problems.

I am just wondering if those not experiencing problems are running uber rigs in which there is little in the way of slow downs between different areas allowing them to crank their mouse speed sensitivity up in game. My own system is a QX6700@3200 / 4 GB of ram / Vista 64/ 8800GTX with Beta 180 (fixed the BSOD for me I was having with the last drivers) controlled by a Fujitsu keyboard / Logitech G5 Mouse. I am running the game at 1920x1200 on my Dell 2405 LCD.

I'm running the set up in my sig and never got any slowdowns while playing. I'm thinking you have some other issues that are not related to the game itself (though I did get pretty bad performance with the vsync option enabled)

Loafer, in your case, I suggest a few things...

1. Turning off vsync.... yes, this seems to greatly assist the mouse/keyboard "float" and "lag".

2. Buy a Wired Xbox 360 controller, or wireless (but you would then also have to by the microsoft xbox 360 controller receiver for usb, as the wireless 360 controller does not use the usb connection on the controller for control input/output, rather to charge the battery, at least on pc).

3. By any decent gamepad if the 360 controller is out of budget for you, and use a key remap configuration tool. There's severeal freebies out there.

4. Buy a mouse that supports multiple DPI, such as the Razer gaming mice, or something like the logitech G5 gaming mouse. Expensive, but the DPI and speed selectors on these mice allow you to quickly change on the fly, and well worth it

5. Wait for a patch. As new as this game is, and as much attention this is causing, it will more than likely not go unnoticed. The reason it was forgotten on RE4 for PC is because it was a port thrown out for a few extra bucks long after the main console release lost their popularity.

While it doesnt bother me, it is obvious the controller code was just quickly tossed in to wrap to a keyboard and mouse and not fined tuned. Where as a gamepad on a PC, unless the gamepad has been correctley programmed for it, you basically have to use a third party program to slopply remap the keys to the axis/buttons on the pad, and they filled very "loose" and "touchy". Its obvious they did a vice-versa map for this game on PC. This may have been done to get it out the door alongside the console releases, and is probably something they have allready fixed in a yet to be released patch. Overall, while I dont complain about it, it seems to be the only "rushed" issue as far as this port goes anyway.

hope this helps.

I've been playing for a few hours now. Resolution is 1920x1200, and I'm using V-Sync. Though there is a tiny bit of lag, it's not bad at all. It's set to 60fps in the config file on my system. I don't know where people are getting the 30fps thing unless it auto-detects based on your system or something like that. It's smooth as silk with everything maxed.

The controls took a little getting used to, but I'm totally immersed in the game now. They've become nearly transparent. The only thing I have a problem with is that you can't set the mouse sensitivity separately for aiming mode and walking mode. That would be the main thing I'd ask for. I can't swing my gun around as fast as I'd like without messing with the normal mode mouselook.

I tried the 360 pad, and absolutely hated it. It works great on some types of third person games, but this isn't one of them for me. I suppose if you're used to it it wouldn't be so bad. I wouldn't even want to get used to it. :D

I've got the mouse sensitivity at around half-way up. I'm using an MS Sidewinder mouse (the weird looking black one,) and have had it set to the middle DPI setting.

This game is great. No complaints here after a bit of fine tuning.

Bioshock was fine for MOST people and after the patch mouse controls were basically perfect. Alone in the Dark on the other hand is the worst shit I have ever tried to play and 99% of people would agree with me on that.
they were not perfect even after the patch, not even close. the sensitivity curve is still ridiculously high (even setting 2 out of 10 is too fast) and if you set it to 1 the cursor is broken making the mini-games and ui navigation impossible. Then you have to manually edit the mouse sens values for almost 100 different actions separately to get the sensitivity you are used to in other games. The mouse look is still messed up unless you bind a key to disable some interpolation/smoothing shit they have and you have to hit it every time you load a new level or saved game. The granularity is also fucked up where it is impossible to move the crosshair by pixels, even the slightest movement results in way to much response almost as if there was a deadzone! You are just not sensitive to it, those of us who are used to pinpoint precision and linear mouse movement with low sens in games like CS:S can notice this shit immediately. Bioshock is the only game I have ever played that shipped and still has broken mouse look, GoW pc also had the nasty interpolation but it wasn't nearly to the same degree and is easily disabled in the input.ini file unlike in Bioshock. I can't believe the pc testers didn't catch this before the game was released but it's like night and day compared to any other game.

I haven't tried Dead Space yet but after getting burned with Bioshock I'm reluctant to buy it until I get to try it somehow first.

Btw, anyone found a way to widen that ridiculously narrow FOV? I was playing the 360 version the other day and was starting to get dizzy it's so bad, it hurts just thinking how bad it will be when sitting 2 feet from the screen.
