DC Vault

Still digging out from 21 inches of snow yesterday. My latest power bill was $183. I might start F@H again but I probably won't start up anything else until sometime next year.

Just got the dreaded C1 error on my 680i mobo. :(. Well I am going to be down a dual core for a while. RMA here I come, and I hope the mobo did not take out my RAM along with it.

Bummer Eric. Hardware failures are never fun. I just got my RAM back on an RMA after about 3 weeks. Hopefully they can turn that around quickly for you.

Well, after the Christmas race is over I think I will switch my other computers to SoB. We could use a good boost there and we usually retain those points Also, learned that my 8800gts can run Collatz so I should be getting some points for that as well. Hope everyone enjoys their holidays!

SoB would be a good place to put some cycles into Eric.
Happy Holidays to you as well.

Merry Christmas Commandos !

:sigh: my computer got shutoff in my college dorm due to their power outage so i've been pointsless for quite a while now, and the PC won't get back online until the 5th. At least this lappy is crunching malariacontrol for a measly couple hundred boinc ppd

Where do you go to college? I have the same schedule as you except I brought my i7 home with me :)

I got scared that we would lose power due to the snow/ice so I shut my farm off while Im out of town for the next couple days. They should be back on by Monday though. I think that I might throw some cores at NFS. I havent looked at the team standings but maybe since its a new project we can stay up at the top! :)

Clemson University. I didn't feel like lugging my computer to my car at the time, and I figured I have such a nice Sony Vaio that I should at least use it... (I hardly use it in Clemson since I have my desktop)

Ah makes sense. I live about a half an hour away from where I go (RIT) so it isn't to bad for me.

I think I'll join Eric on SOB for a while and put some cores on Poem and see if we can get back up into the 9k's for our Poem score in the DC-Vault.

distrubted.net + Stream - Does anyone know why dnet hasn't come out with a new beta of the stream client for RC5-72? Are they planning on bringing it back at all? I see the CUDA client has now expired as well but the Linux stream client expired back in October with the Windows client expiring in November.

no one really knows with them.. they just release new clients randomly.. you can still use the old clients by changing your OS date.. but then it also screws with other programs..

Tobit there is a new Windows/Linux CUDA 2.2 (non beta) and new Windows x64 (non beta) out today and I would think a new Stream client will be on the way within a few days.
You can set your date back to run the old Stream client if needed until the new one comes out.

Awesome, glad to hear this. I still want to put together a dedicated dnet box after my i7 folding rig is done and now having non-beta 64-bit and GPU clients will make this much more attractive.

I think before I start a new project (either NFS or Muon1) I am going to do a little more work in Cosmology. Cosmology and POEM are the only BOINC projects we dont have 9K vault points in correct? :)

so how many of you guys are running NFS? was wonder what your memory usage was per NFS WU? for me its using 500 megs per WU which is friggin insane for a 30 minute WU..

Yes, Cosmo and Poem are the only Boinc projects under 9K in the Vault.
If you do decide to run NFS you may want to de-select the " lasievef " work unit in your NFS account preferences if you have less then 8gb+ of ram. The rest fit nicely under 4gb ram on a quad core which I complete in about 22-24 minutes.

I am having some trouble with my i7 box being able to run SoB, it seems to restart when I run it. I am having problems just running this computer right now without it restarting. I think the last few were a bad batch of primegrids. Not sure but it seems to restart less if I do not run SoB.

check all your voltages and make sure they are right.. try running p95 large and small FFT's and see if its stable..

Its not overclocked, I have everything stock. And I am in basement where it is chilly my CPU with 8 Bonic WUs running is 39C. So I doubt it is the voltages unless I need to bump them up.

Eric if you have your voltages set to Auto in the Bios you very well may be under volting something and you will need to give it a manual bump up, also be sure to look up your memory specs and check to see if they are getting enough actual volts not just the manual setting.
I always use the Hardware Monitor tab in the Bios to see what the actual volts are then readjust the Bios settings and reboot and then check the Hardware Monitor tab again to see the effects.

Wow. It doesnt work so well on an i7 (8 threads) with 4GB of RAM. Between Cosmology (which takes about 300MB/WU) and NFS (about 500MB/WU) my RAM is the limiting factor for once. :( I guess I'll have to sprinkle in a few projects with lower RAM requirements. These Cosmology units sure take a long time for the points you get for them.

Eric - What if you run like 4 SOB threads and 4 BOINC threads? Is it stable then? Could just be a software bug creating problems.

So I tried some things to see if I could get everything stable and so far it has not worked. I checked my power settings, still my computer reboots. I upped my voltages slightly and made sure I they were off auto.
What are some good stable voltages for an i7 (running at stock)?

Congrats on 5 million points in Collatz metallicafan !
Thats a big hill to climb.

have you done any stability tests like small fft's and large fft's in p95 to test if its the cpu or cpu and ram in combination?

if it passes on both for a couple hours.. then we can pretty much determine its a software issue and not hardware..

I am running the stability tests now to see.

if it passes small FFT's but not large FFT's then the problem y is ram related.. if it fails small FFT's then we know its cpu related... and if it passes both then like i said we most likely know its a software problem..

For those that have not heard, thanks to the efforts of mfl0p and others there is now a good working PrimeGrid AP26 Search CUDA GPU application for Nvidia video cards.

Manage your CPU/GPU work units with your PrimeGrid account preferences.
The CUDA GPU application will download and run automatically like GPUGRID work units.

I have tested the application on 8800GTS (G92), GTS250, and on GTX260 running Boinc 6.10.25.
Heat is on or just below what you would expect from a GPUGRID work unit with the same very little CPU use and run times are about 16-19 minutes on my overclocked video cards.

Thanks mfl0p for all your hard work and dedication !

For being stable Yes, and no. I am unsure what the software problem is at the moment. My hardware is fine just I am not sure what is causing the instability from the software end.

My thought so far is primegrid. If I close out of boinc it seems fine and bonic is running primegrid at the moment.

I will be taking some time off from crunching unfortunately.
My revenue stream is getting pinched for the next 2 months and I need to cut back on expenditures.
I'll have everything back on line in a couple months but for now I have to be a spectator and help with any knowledge I can offer to the team.
I'll be right here cheering the team on and keeping it [H]ard.

Thanks for your contributions so far, Razor. The economy is rough.

I'm down to one machine crunching, the gaming i7. I've been hit with various computer problems recently, so even though I tried to ramp back up slightly, I'm back to almost nothing. I'm going to work on getting two of the boxen bootable again, and hopefully I don't have any dead hardware.

Sorry to hear that Razor. I'll be the first to hope that you can rejoin us full time in a couple of months as you mentioned. :) Real life stuff has to come first. Hopefully the rest of the commandos can keep our DC Vault ranking afloat until you can once again spare some processing cycles.

Best regards.

Thanks, I think I can leave one machine up and running but the rest will be offline for the 2 month period that I must cut costs.
I came to the realization this morning that my heating bill will go through the roof if I shut them all down when I seen that my office temp this morning was down from 28c to 21c, thats pretty cold for my office and that is after opening all the furnace vents.
So I'll find a balance and run with it, then I should be back full force sometime in April.

The team is doing a excellent, and I'm glad to be part of such a dedicated team.

Good luck with your 2 months off we will work hard to keep up the production.

I think my i7 is finally stable however my computer as a whole is not. I had to adjust the timings on my memory which was set to auto(i forgot to change it). It can run Bonic WUs or SoB workunits but will not run Bonic Wus, and a GPU unit from collatz. Do you think it could be my power supply?

I tested my processor on all 3 settings for 5+ hours for prime 95 and it ran stable. My GPU is not overclocked and when I run the GPU units I turn up the fan to 100%.

I also just broke 1 Million Bonic points for the horde.
