DC Vault

There are a few who occasionally look at the DC Vault stats like myself, Alan and possibly others. I'm actually a bit disappointed that we don't have a more respectable standing than our current position suggests, which is not even in the top 100. A deplorable standing if you ask me. :(

Having said that, I can't estimate to what degree our involvement in one or two additional projects will affect our DC Vault position. Maybe it will bump us into the top 100, I honestly don't know. Part of the problem lies with this team's history and how we have had only official participation in no more than two projects at a time (one at present).

Although the lack of official support has never been an absolute impediment to involvement, it has limited this team's exploratory efforts in 'alternative' projects for whatever rationale of the time was not viewed as viable (ex. SETI). Traditionally, [H] team members frowned upon projects that had little potential benefit for humanity. This has also been my own position in regards to personal DC involvement.

All of this does not imply we don't possess the necessary resources to tackle many other projects if that became an objective. Indeed, if ARS can maintain the #1 spot for near a decade, we can certainly do better than we have done to date. I remember reading on ARS' forum when they had lost the #1 position to us in F@H, the consensus of their multiple team leaders was far better to drop in F@H than sacrifice their overall standing. Different team, different philosophy.
Being ranked #123 isn't nearly [H]ard enough.
Almost 1 year from the beginning of this thread 12-19-2008 and we are pushing at top 10 from then position, I would say we are doing pretty good !!

Yeah I was just thinking about this the other day because I noticed that I had been a WCG member for a year in Oct. We have come a long way in a year!

I hit a bit of a hiccup this weekend. Came home Fri night to find my i7 box down. Turns out I have a bad stick of RAM. The ABC units I was running were taking about 200MB of RAM each so I had to limp through those. Now im running a mix of Enigma and WCG WUs that dont take much RAM. Sucks to build a new rig and have a part fail within 2 weeks. :(

Crunch on!

Yeah, but the preview of the [H] in 10th makes for a nice lunch break! Not to mention that the beer is on my boss after work, so only 4 hours to go until a pitcher of Guinness on tap (promotion party - old tradition here).

Figure I might as well celebrate a short term accidental jump with free beer, right? :D

I was pumped this morning when I saw the jump. To bad its only a preview of whats to come. :)

Yeah I would say that's more than enough reason to enjoy a nice cold Guinness. Drink one for me too! :D

The 6.10 betas are nice, so I'm glad to get a stable version. I have a bunch of systems to update, though.

There's a ton of SIMAP work this month. I'm still crunching it full speed, but I think we're getting near the end.

Anyone know how to reach hitobahadur (captain for out WCG team)? I tried to send him a PM but havent heard back from him yet. I dont suppose anyone has an email address? Just a shot in the dark.

there were 5.4 million WU's.. i dont think they are ending anytime soon..

Project status
Calculation of SIMAP updates is currently running.
The current workunits calculate the similarities and domains of approx. 400.000 new sequences from public databases and approx. 5 million new sequences from environmental samples imported in October 2009.

You're right. I took another look and there's still tons of work left. I wonder if it will be done by Dec. 1? Anyway, it's better than the old days when all work was completed as soon as it appeared.

Given the economy, I might have to start cutting back on crunching so I can save some money on electricity. I'll see what last month's power bill looks like in a day or two and then make some decisions.

Sazan - I think everyone has had to make adjustments in their "DCing world" to some extent because of the economy. We understand, thanks for doing whatever you can contribute. :) If your DCing with all of the hardware in your sig that has to be taking up a lot of juice!

I was all set to put a large dent in some Cosmology WUs and hopefully get us to 9K vault points there, only to find out that the project has been down for about a week. :( Working on some of my WCG badges in the meantime. Hopefully the project comes back alive soon.

P.S. - I sent a PM to hito bahadur about doing the Christmas Race again in WCG. We did that race last year and did quite well. Is anyone up for doing this race again if I can get hito bahadur to enter us in the challenge?

Oh and one more thing - Commandos - Dont forget to vote for the DCer of the Month. :)

Cosmology@home is starting to churn out work again. Looks like they got their transitioner fixed. I got a couple WU's. The ones I picked up are using about 350MB of RAM each though. So beware if you have boxen with not a lot of RAM.

Crunch on.

Keep up the great work Commandos !
We are making great progress in the DC-Vault.

I've shut down all but three boxen, and only my ATI card is crunching in addition to the CPUs. Finally, my A/C is not constantly running. I'm going to do some reorganization and move some more boxen into my office instead of having PCs scattered everywhere (two in the dining room, for example). When it gets a little colder I'll probably bring some back online. The biggest electricity savings comes from completely stopping F@H, but once I get a better feel for my job situation I'll probably start that up again next year.

My i7 will be down for this week. I had to leave it at college. I fired up some good ole P4s to somewhat offset it.
Just got another halfway decent P4 from someone for free and should have it up and running soon.
I love when people think their computers break and all it needs is a new HDD or something. Perfect for my DC farm. :)

In Boinc 6.10.19+ you can disable any GPU from use by Boinc by putting a line in your cc_config.txt file (you can ignore more than one if you want).

NVIDIA -
Disable first NVIDIA GPU use:
<ignore_cuda_dev>0</ignore_cuda_dev>

Disable second NVIDIA GPU use:
<ignore_cuda_dev>1</ignore_cuda_dev>

ATI -
Disable first ATI GPU use:
<ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>

Disable second ATI GPU use:
<ignore_ati_dev>1</ignore_ati_dev>

I requested this to be implemented to the Boinc development team and I have tested it and found that it does work.

Do ATI Cards work as well as NV cards?

Or do NV cards outperform ATI by alot just like in F@H?

Yes there are some ATI and Nvidia apps in Boinc and performance is actually the other way around in Boinc compared to FAH.
Boinc ATI out performs Nvidia by about 300% - 400%
and in RC5-72 (non-Boinc) ATI out performs Nvidia by about 400-500%

...but some projects only support ATI, and some only support NVIDIA/CUDA.

I haven't done any head-to-head testing on Collatz, but it's running nicely on my ATI card since Milkyway is out of work. Collatz never worked right on my GTX 295s.

I started reorganizing my office tonight, and I'm hoping to bring my other i7 back online and devote it to GIMPS. I've found that GIMPS really stresses an overclock, so I need to make sure the box is stable this time.

NQueens is back up and running and should be added back to the DC-Vault soon.

NQueens was put back into the DC-Vault which gave us enough to claim the 10th spot in the DC-Vault.

Nice work everyone!
Congrats to all the [H]ard DC Commandos !

It been a year long climb but we finally made it to the top 10. Congrats everyone! Grab yourself a nice cold Guinness tonight to celebrate. I hope everyone has a good holiday!

Oh yeah - Crunch on!

Congrats guys! Quite a climb from the lower 200's when I first discovered the Vault. :D

Anyone go say neener neener at AnandTech yet?

Back from a week in Disneyland with the family to find the top 10 spot! Rock on, [H]ard commandoes!

Think I'm going to start transitioning over to WCG for the big race - might as well go give some again to the project that expanded my horizons beyond just folding... :D

Nice work on Muon1, Razor. Is it pretty easy to gain points there?

I'll probably help out with the WCG race just because I want to break into the top 100 on our team  but I'll keep most of my current limited production on other Vault projects.

A decent Quad core can put in 100k/day in Muon1 and I7 put up incredible numbers.

Great job guys. If EVGA wasn't on our folding butt I'd join in.
I still have two 9600GSOs folding hard for about 8-9K ppd on my quad box - I just refuse to run the CPU client because it was too big of a pain to keep running correctly... I run the BOINC client on my various CPUs while folding, and keep both causes going strong!

So am I reading there stats correctly? You have 6.xxx million points? And we need about 3 million more points to overtake the next spot?

Is the client easy to setup?

clients easy as heck to setup and hes right a decent quad can do 100k points.. i was running it for a while sometimes forgot it was running and started doing other projects at the same time.. just follow the directions on their website on how to set your user name and then start the muon1 background.exe and you are done..

Is this a trick question? :D:D Im guessing that adding 3M points to most projects would get us a spot or two. :)

Actually, If im reading the stats correctly I think that in Muon1 we would need about 3M points to get to the next spot. Razor was saying that a quad will do 100K PPD in that project. I was just thinking that a few Quads/i7s dedicated to the project for a month or so could potentially net us a couple thousand vault points.

Looks like we need another 11K vault points to get to #9. A "quick" 3K points in Muon1 would take a big chunk out of that.

Yes we need a little under 3 million points to start passing other teams and yes I have a little over 6 million points and we just passed The Pirate Fleet just the other day.:D
It is easy to download and set up Muon1 metallicafan, just extract it in any directory and create a user.txt file in the same directory with the team and you user name, this is what I have in my user.txt file.

[H]Razor_FX_II

I always run the config_net.bat file to make sure it is configured to run on my dedicated Internet connection.
You may want to edit the config.txt file and change the L to a B in this line and save:

Priority for background running ([N]ormal, [L]ow, ackground): L

Then double click the muon1_background.exe and when you want to shut it off you will need to stop the process in Task Manager.

yeah i stopped running muon1 to help out in the WCG challange for [H] thats why you passed us :p

btw for those that are joining muon1 make sure you put the [H] in your user name so that it adds you to the team.. without the team tag it will not add you to the team..

Do you set this up in BOINC or do I just run the Muon1.exe?
How can you monitor it?

Do you set this up in BOINC or do I just run the Muon1.exe?
How can you monitor it?
You run Muon1 without graphical interface (best performance) by running the muon1_background.exe

To install as a screensaver, simply run muon1.scr in your Muon1 directory
The file config.txt allows you to change the resolution that the graphical version runs at and the priority level that the background version uses (where "Background" is the lowest). You can also change the number of threads the program uses for its calculations: this is for multicore machines and you should set the number of threads to the number of processors you have (or double that number if you have hyperthreading). For automatic configuration of the program for computers with and without permanent internet connections, run the files config_net/nonet.bat, which will change the relevant settings in config.txt for you.
The program muon1_background.exe will run the simulation without any display, so you can use Windows as normal while it is running. To terminate it, use the task manager to end the task "muon1_background". To set this program to run on startup, place a shortcut to it in your Start Menu's StartUp directory.
The program muon1viewresults.exe shows a histogram of the results in the current results.txt file.

You can download and run the Muon1Bench that gives you some monitoring and performance bench marks that you can compair to other systems.

How do I use the Muon1Bench.exe program? Put the program in your Muon1 directory (same place as muon1.exe) and simply start and leave it running while Muon1 is working. It will produce a file BenchCSV.log which has three columns: one logging the time in seconds, the second showing the number of new Mpts Muon1 has produced and the third showing a running estimate of the speed in units of kpts/sec (1000 kpts = 1 Mpts). Once you've run it for a day or so (enough for the estimate to be stable), post your results to the benchmarking thread in the forum.
