After being delayed by newegg deliveries, the '09 CC, and a hard drive crash (should've know the old 120 GB Maxtor in my closet with half an inch of dust on it would die), I'm finally posting from my new to me Q6600 dedicated folder! Thanks to Sunin for the sweet deal on CPU, mobo, and memory. Tomorrow the two 9600 GSO's go in here for 4 CPU cores and 2 GPU cores of crunching goodness... If I can just find one more core to borg, I'll finally be in the double digits.

Anyone know how an 8600GT might do in GPUGRID? That'll be the card in my gaming box tomorrow, and it runs too hot to fold regularly, but I can't stand the thought of a video card not doing anything... :D

my 8800GT's running at 9800GT speeds it takes me between 12-14 hours per WU on gpugrid.. id say the 8600GT is going to be in the mid to high 16 hour range.. and you will probably get a lot of projects with redundent results and no points.. thats whats happening to me right now..

you may do better in SETI with it or wait til milkyway@home switches to the cuda support.. or you can try RC5-72 i believe has a gpu client as well..

If I didnt know any better I would say that tr0ach added another GPU or two to the GRID. Nice going! Looks like our RAC is higher than ever in that project.

Yea RC5-72 has a Cuda client. I've been running that on my old G80 Nvidia card when its not too damn hot in my basement. :) The client seems to be stable and run well. Just make sure you have a 32 bit OS. There isnt a 64 bit Cuda client. :(

I only have an 8800gts 640mb version which doesn't work for GPUGRID. I was unaware there was a GPU client for RC5-72. I am starting to run it now.

i have 2 8800GT's in the grid went from last to 10th place in just under 2 weeks..

it doesnt have to be a 32bit os.. 64 bit os's have 32bit emulators in them.. which is why you can run both 32bit and 64bit applications..

hmmm . . . On my 64 bit Vista box it would run fine until it came time to unload the out buffer and then the app would crash. Maybe I had something else messed up. Anyway i reformatted to XP and its working good now. I might have to try it out on my Win7 64 box.

Well, it's a G84 GPU, I don't know if that matters... I guess I'll flip a coin between GPUGRID and RC5-72! And for now, I just did what I predicted and stuck with the 32 bit XP I own - I'm going to play with setting up a dual boot with Win7 64 bit at some point, but I've had enough computer configuring for a while.

As of last night I have 14 Wieferich@home processes running. :D It looks like we'll start overtaking other teams soon.

It's really killing me that I still haven't found a stable OC for my i7, so I'll probably go for a safe OC this weekend, like 3.3GHz.

that sucks.. have you tried messing with all the voltages? my friend had the same problem could never exceed 3.4ghz no matter what he did.. and corsair kept saying the memory was fine.. he ended up rma'ing the ram about 6 times before corsair finally said the memory was bad.. which we had already known it was bad because he was running the system at 3.8ghz with the same corsair ram he was trying to RMA that he bought while waiting for corsair to finally take the RMA...

Just an observation on yoyo:

Old processors seem to get really good credit on OGR-27 in yoyo... I know some people don't run OGR on yoyo, preferring to just run the OGR client itself, but my old 1.4GHz mobile celeron just turned in a WU that took 65 hours to complete, and was awarded 1124 pernt for the effort! On a seconds/point basis, that only about 2% less than my OCed dual core in my sig gets! 415 Boinc points a day on a 1.4 celeron is probably the best bang I'll get outta that old chip!

Wonder if I could get my old P3 to finish a WU in time and get 3K+ pernts for it :D

Are you still seeing the same results with this? I have a laptop I want to run but it gets to hot running 24/7 full out. I was going to try running it in power saver mode so it doesn't overheat and this project might just do the trick.

depending on what processor the laptop uses.. you could try undervolting it with RMclock.. so far all the amd mobile processors undervolt by a lot.. i havent had to much luck with the c2d's..

It's an Intel dual-core.

shouldnt run that hot.. my c2d 2ghz maxes out both cores full load at 77C and my c2d 1.5ghz maxes out at 72C(this ones running a much quieter fan)..

It's hot enough that you can't comfortably use it on your lap. If I remove some of the covers it cools down nicely.

yeah thats totally true.. most of my laptops only run projects when idle and sitting on a coffee table.. since this house is generally empty 14 hours out of the day and most of the laptops are idle after 10pm and arent used again til 8pm the next day.. and the c2d 2ghz is usually idle 5 days out of the week since that ones used by my father which works retardedly long 94 hour shifts..

SIMAP IS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN!!!! GRAB YOUR WU'S WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!

there will be 650k units.. so heres our chance to make a huge dent!!

I was for as long as I was running it, but I pulled that laptop off yoyo about a week ago (once I hit 10K) to work on other projects - I'm trying all the various projects to see was gives the best bang on that slow of a processor, and should settle on something soon. I'll keep the group informed on what I find.

OTOH, right now, my big problem is my new dedicated box's temps running 4 Q6600 cores on BOINC + 2 9600GSO cores folding is giving me a temp of 80C at the stock 2.4GHz on core 1 with the case closed. Short term solution was removing the side cover, which dropped me to 65C under full load, but that still seems too hot to get any decent OC. Sunin had this chip at 3.0+, so I have to assume my cooling solution is just not working right, and let's face it - keeping the Q6600 crunching is WAY more important than the old celeron laptop :D Unfortunately, the heatsink I have is the kind that requires removal of the mobo to reseat it due to the plate on the back... :(

I am putting my 2 duals on this. Hopefully it should help. :)

::Janthanis:: I would definitely like to see which projects work the best on old processors because I got 3 P4s/PIII sitting off because I cannot find anything worth the time right now.

One down, three to go in Wieferich@home. :D

I just fired up SIMAP on my BOINC box.

im running W@H and simap on my system right now.. W@H PPS dropped from 1500 to 1100 but im still seeing the same lapse times with the simap WU's with and without W@H running.. which brings me to wonder how much actual cpu power does simap use..

oh yeah on a side note.. ive officially killed my xp-m 2400+ laptop.. either the motherboards finally given up due to overheating or the processor is toast.. it wont stay running W@H for more then 10 minutes before it just completely shuts down.. even when the processor is only hitting 60C(15C lower then its max temp)

It looks like "crimson tide2" just transferred to our W@H team. Welcome! That gave us a nice boost, so that we should catch the next team a couple days sooner.

Welcome crimson. We are in striking distance now folks! Keep up the good work. I've got about half my CPUs on W@home and half on ABC@home.

ok SIMAP's over til next month everyone.. time to slam W@H some more see if we can move up a few more spots.. i only have 25 more simap projects to finish up..

Good Job guys. I am gonna work on W@H once my SIMAP units finish. Once we break past a few teams I think I am going to try some more SoB.

yeah i finished up the last of my simaps while i was asleep.. back on W@H.. hopefully we can get to 9th place.. then i may go back to SoB as well with this system to help out on there.. get us passed some more dead end teams..

I decided to stop trying to shoot for an extreme OC on my i7, and picked 3.5GHz as a decent goal. What do you know, so far (knock on wood) it's rock solid at stock voltage, though I did bump the VTT to 1.26 and the RAM up to recommended voltage for DDR3 1600 (currently @ 1400). The temps are nice too, so I think I'm going to leave it. Of course, I'll know more about stability after 24hrs.

back on W@H.. hopefully we can get to 9th place..

We should be able to get to 8th place in less than a week. According to Jathanis's spreadsheet posted earlier in this thread, that will give us a 666.667 point bump in W@H and one step closer to having at least 8K points in all projects.

arg stupid flicker and its small ass pictures..

when you only have 1 W@H window open on the screen what PPS are you getting? just wondering how much faster it is then my 940..

when you have multiple W@H windows open the PPS goes to absolute shit.. 1 window i get 1500-1700 PPS.. all 4 open it drops to about 1100 PPS..

ha ha this was just to funny not to post... a friggin 16 year old is running FreeHAL...

to bad i no longer have my 3 gigabit servers otherwise i probably would of helped them out by using one of them as a mirror..

Just sitting here watching one window, it fluctuates a lot. I've seen it go above 900 and below 800, but it seems to hang out in the 850-875 range.

My core temps are stable at about 64 C, so I'm happy with that.

what the heck.. thats insanely low.. my 940 completely massacres that thing.. err wait.. are you running F@H on that system or any gpu projects?

if you are.. try going into your task manager and changing the priority to above normal and see if anything happens.. dont change the priority inside W@H otherwise it freaks out.. i had to do that on my system running GPUGRID. if i didnt i avged about 1200 PPS..

above one is just with a single client showing..
bottom one is with all 4 open..

Keep in mind I'm running 8 processes on a quad core, using hyperthreading. This means I'm getting about half of a core per process. I've seen this with GIMPS and BOINC too. I haven't paid attention to the numbers enough to know if only running 4 processes doubles the performance per process, but it works out to the same amount of work either way.

yeah makes sense.. at least i finally found something that my 940 can out perform an i7 on.. :p now all i need to do is get a motherboard that will allow me to hit the 3.8ghz mark and see what the 300mhz more per core will do..

Well, after my successful overclocking yesterday, I decided to fix some hard drive issues I've been having and ended up killing two machines (both running W@H). Luckily I have everything backed up to Windows Home Server, so after a trip to Microcenter eariler today I should have everything back online soon. I really hate XP's need for F6 boot floppies.

damn that sucks...

yeah im probably going to finally make the switch to windows 7 later this week.. im done dealing with xp.. i can never get it to run smoothly with my overclock while having anything using cuda..

Razor - Havent heard from you in a while man. Everything ok? It looks like your GPUGRID RAC has been on a steady decrease. You are probably aware but just thought I'd see if everything was going good. :)

Yeah things are fine, been hitting Seti-Beta GPU to get it to 50k, then I'll be back on GPUGRID in a day or so.

On another note last few days have been busy:
- Upgraded one of my E8400's to a Q9300
- Upgrade the P4HT to a Phenom II A3 x4 810
So I have 1 duel and 3 quads running now. Just getting the oc's done.
Should see an improvement in my work ability by tomorrow, have the quads doing Poem for a few more days then I'm going to spread them around a bit.

Good to hear. Nice wok on the new Quads. I really need to upgrade to a couple of Quads. Right now Im just running a small army of dual cores. :D
