Crysis: Warhead reviewed (IGN)!

i would love to give crysis warhead a go but this 3 installation crap along with a load of DRM crap annoys me

I understand what you mean. I don't like this DRM program/installation limit either and I wish they would use a better solution. But at this moment, Warhead looks promising and I really want to play it.

I'm sorry if I sounded too harsh in my last post, that was not my intention.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you. DRM is not a part of the game itself and has no effect on the functioning of the game at all. Discussions about performance, graphics or gameplay for example does. Also, DRM is not unique to only this game, IMHO a specific DRM thread would be much more useful. There are people who don't mind DRM or just don't like reading about it in a game thread.

I want to read a discussion about the contents of the game itself, and not finding out that half of the thread is only about how bad DRM (which I'm not denying as I feel that this is not a good solution) is and how many people won't buy the game because of it. That is their choice and I fully respect that but that doesn't mean everyone wants to read or be reminded about it every time.

Well, this is what we are here for, discussion :)

I would like to point out, though that DRM does, in fact, is intertwined within the game, so much so that if it doesn't work, you don't even get to enjoy graphics or game play.

Again, I see a lot of other unrelated "specific" game talk, none of which relates to the graphics/game play of the game, but you say that is more tolerable. Well, that is just your opinion. Again, we are here to discuss games. DRM is a part of the game. If you want to discuss graphics/ game play only, may I suggest another sub thread be started for that discussion, and that discussion only. See where I'm going with this? It would be disadvantageous to have multiple threads on one game, when one thread can cover every aspect of the game.

Just because discussion of a certain aspect of a game annoys you, doesn't mean those of us who find it relevant shouldn't talk about it. DRM should be at the forfront of everyone's concerns as it involves big business and government aligning themselves to take away rights of the consumers (people). Short of me making money off of a game by copying and reselling it (or giving it away for free), I should be able to do whatever the hell I want with it.

I don't see anything wrong with have unlimited installs for my system.

Please excuse the retarded grammar in this post, I was still asleep when I wrote it. :D

dammit. My 8800GT cant pull it off. Damn! Another time to upgrade my GPU, problem is, i have no money and probably now isnt the best time to upgrade.

Just because discussion of a certain aspect of a game annoys you, doesn't mean those of us who find it relevant shouldn't talk about it.

No, it means make your own fucking thread so people who actually want to play and talk about games don't have to weed through crap they've seen a million times in every goddamn game thread.

No, it means I'm a big tool.

NO, you must have a thick skull, it is part of the game therefore it gets discussed in game threads.

If you choose to be an ignorant sheep then go nuts, but those of us who want to retain some property rights, and are responsible, will discuss every aspect of the game, in the games thread.

Dude, you seem to be mistaking me with someone who likes or wants DRM. I don't. I just don't want to hear about it in a thread where I want to talk about gameplay content. May I suggest here or here if you wish to continue to say the same shit over and over.

Why in the world would you even need to install it 4 times anyways?

For what it's worth, Ive been gaming on the PC for over 16 years now, and I can only think of one... perhaps two games out of over 100 that Ive installed more than 3 times.

I firmly believe some of you are being sensational just for the sake of sensationalism itself.

You don't need to believe it because that's exactly what they are being, LOL.

It's like Vista and its bandwagon of haters but look now, everyone loves Vista.

Crysis, the way it should have been released the first time version?

No, unfortunately. Everyone hated the aliens the same as they did FarCry's mutants, but now they're being made less enjoyable. Somehow, though, they claim to have made warhead based on criticisms of Crysis.

Basically, they're full of shit.

Crysis, the way it should have been released the first time version?
Crysis Warhead is to Crysis as iPhone firmware 2.1 is to firmware 2.0, I'm gathering.

(yeah, that's an Aristotelian analogy man. Dig it)

I'm awaiting input on the multiplayer.

If it's legit, I'm in.

Did you play the original multiplayer? Warhead sounds ok with the vehicle maps, but I'm fully expecting everything else to be people running around in strength mode punching people to death in one hit.

You don't need to believe it because that's exactly what they are being, LOL.

I do fresh installs of Vista every 6 months. Acronis ftw but it is annoying for people out there that don't have that image backup option. You're dead on about the bandwagon though, add to that: TN panels, Microstutter, Crysis, along with Vista and DRM the [H] forum cut and paste buzzwords.

Why reinstall Vista every 6 months though? the days of doing this with Windows have been long gone since Windows 98. Vista also doesn't get slower over time unless you're the type who doesn't take care of basic maintenance tasks!

My installs last me years. My XP install lasted me almost 2 years of excellent an installation and I only reinstalled as I got Vista32 on launch and now Vista 64

If you ever used an Image program it begs the question: why not? its like easy as 1,2,3.

It begs the question, why?

If the OS is not compromised in any way why wast the time and effort to restore an image to point x?

As a means of backup in case of failure or compromise that's fine, I have my own backups on external disks for this but why restore it every 6 months for the sake of it especially when it doesn't need to be done on Vista is just bizarre.

Because I like to do things a certain way. Ever switch from Nvidia to ATI? I just did a fresh install and got 0 to minimal problems with my video card which is rare with current drivers. I think you need to realize tons of people use image software like Acronis all the time and do fresh installs for X reason. Bizarre as that sounds yes I know but people have different needs.

Just wanted to add also the part I underlined. The fact that you have to ask tells me you never used Acronis. There is 0 effort and it literally takes a few minutes to when you reboot to restore an image. Again it is so easy and only takes a couple keystrokes. Why not?

I switched from AMD to INtel and never needed to reinstall, no problems at all, my benchmarks exceeded similar systems. I recently went from an 8800GT to a 4870 on vista and didn't need to reinstall either and once again my benchmarks exceed those results of similar systems in games and 3dmarks so that argument kind of doesn't work anymore ever since Driver uninstallers and OS updates fixed compatibility and conflict bugs.

Like your true image restores uninstalling old system drivers from device manager getting ready for a mobo change or gfx drivers for gfx card change takes a few clicks and minutes also so the argument that restoring an image only takes a few minutes also won't work any more.

So basically for every time you say "why not?" I have a "why?" because this can go both ways in a never ending cycle.

FYI I have used trueimage before, I have a TI boot cd on my shelf. I don't need to use it any more though as the only time I did use it was during XP servicepack changes from sp1 to sp2 which didn't go well.

I do a reinstall of Vista x64 whenever a new vLite build comes out ;).

So basically for every time you say "why not?" I have a "why?" because this can go both ways in a never ending cycle.
Exactly.
You had no problems with your switch over with video cards and I say Great!!. I refer you over to 2 excellent threads over in the [H] ATI forums involving the 4870x2 drivers and they are huge with many people reporting driver problems. FYI few people resolved them doing dun dun dun guess what? A fresh Vista install. You can ask Dan D the [H] Forum editor about how many times he upgrades and does fresh installs every 6 months. Do you see where I'm getting at here? Different strokes for different folks.

I didn't even go into the benchmarking. Tons of benchmarkers like the ones at Xtreme forums benchmark between OS and do fresh OS installs all the time which goes back to different strokes for different folks.

Like your true image restores uninstalling old system drivers from device manager getting ready for a mobo change or gfx drivers for gfx card change takes a few clicks and minutes also so the argument that restoring an image only takes a few minutes also won't work any more.
I don't understand what you're getting at here? You actually disprove your argument about the frequency needed for people doing fresh installs in that its a given that they change hardware all the time. Many good reasons in your quote above to do a fresh install just for peace of mind. For me though, I don't use Acronis and just do a fresh install lol if I really have to. However, I find it really convenient using Acronis because I do what I call a vanilla backup image where I don't install any video card/sound card/motherboard drivers at all. I just keep stuff I know I will always use like my Anti Virus, and all the current critical Vista 64 updates.

Again you say you used TI so maybe you think it takes effort but this is what I do:
Load Boot Disk into drive
Hit enter select what I want by tabbing menu screen.
Hit "down Arrow" to highlight my detected backup image.
Hit enter.
Easy.........

There's also Creative drivers that people have to do fresh installs for because they don't play well with Vista and of course hate to say it lol DRM securom but you can always do the registry edit. Blu Ray burner owners are better off just doing a fresh install because its not worth the headache and hassle.

Exactly.

well said. just because some people dont format there computer regularly(should do) that doesnt mean others dont. i bet if we do a poll here involving every single member here, you be surprised teh amount of people who do reformats and hardware upgrades

Reformatting is good for the soul.

It's nice to get rid of all the bollocks that accumulates on your PC. It's amazing how much spyware gets through Vista with UAC, a hardware and software firewall, MS Defender, anti-virus and all MS updates and service packs. Scary really. I found a keylogger, identified by Defender recently and so had to wipe. It also forces you to make sure you have everything backed up, which is a good thing for those too lazy to do regularly.

I'd be willing to paypal bet that less people reformat than those who don't.

And I'd be willing to bet that fewer people wait longer than they should to change the oil in their car, it doesn't mean that the majority who don't keep up with their car maintenance are smart.

Well I can accept the fact that you should do whatever suits your usage best and both methods are fine It's just that my argument is why reinstall when the need for it has not arisen? by this what I mean is if your system has not had a virus or spyware infection or whatever broken then there's no need for a reinstall is there really or going back to a backed up image because you'll still be reinstalling things from that image restore point onwards won't you?

I can assure you in the days I've been using Windows I've only ever had to reinstall XP 3-4 times due to bad drivers (creative...) and a hdd death but other than that Vista 32bit and 64bit and XP Sp2 onwards have never needed a reinstall.

I don't get spyware or viruses, I know what is on my machine and what processes are used by what services and I have a weekly strict maintenance routine using a combination of manual and application helped cleaning for anything they find like registry entries that are obsolete or software folders left over from uninstalls etc. My routine has remained unchanged since XP came out and I've never had a problem on any of the machines I build.

It's not really that difficult and I feel doing weekly housecleaning that maintains a 100% stable and fast OS is a far better approach than restoring an image because it's just easier - this leads to laziness and a bad workflow meaning you're more likely to miss a spyware infection if it tries to squeeze through your defences.

I too can put it into an analogy if you like. It's like a new driver driving a car and always taking the shortcut to work instead of the busier road, sure the shortcut is fine but it's not going to improve driving experience in any way any time soon is it. It's not a bad thing but it's not the most sensible way to go about it anyway.

Anyway that's way off topic so let's leave it at that.

I didn't expect it, but a nearby computer/media shop close to the company were I work had just received several copies of Crysis: Warhead. In my break I went to the store and asked the first person behind the counter when they expected the game would arrive at their store. He said it would take a few days, but at that moment his colleague walked towards the counter (he overheard us talking) and informed him that he saw the game in a shipment that was delivered just a few minutes ago. I asked if it was alright if I could already buy a copy. He said that was no problem. (Free Record Shop - The Netherlands)

Unfortunately I still have around 4 hours to work. My friend has a birthday party this evening so I won't be able to play much. I do hope to install the game and take a look at/play it for a few minutes before I have to leave. I look forward to really start playing it which probably will be tomorrow.

I'd just like to point out that you answered your own question.

You like to, he doesn't it. Argument over.

I'm sorry for the late reply, but I have very little time today. I can't say I 100% agree with your point of view but I definitely understand what you mean. Thanks for the detailed explanation. :)

Yeah, this is kinda pissing me off. Assuming Steam even gets around to letting me dl the game today, the servers will be so slammed I won't be able to play it until tomorrow. Only I'm busy all day tomorrow and thus will have to wait till Friday. Pointless bitching on my end? Yeah. But it makes me wonder if I should have bought a hard copy instead.

You see, that's why it shouldn't be part of the discussion.
It's about politics and ethics and opinion and all that. It's not really about Crysis Warhead. The game is just a vehicle for people to get into a debate and put forth their ideals.
You can pick any other game that uses SecuROM or a similar DRM scheme in a similar way, and the DRM-debate will be the same.

Those are byproducts which result from some part of the game. It doesn't matter how you slice it, DRM is, in fact, part of the game. That stands to reason it can be discussed in the games thread.

I'm not debating with you that it isn't any different in other games, and that the discussion isn't the same, but again, that doesn't those of us who discuss it wrong, it's still part of the game.

There isn't DRM discussion in games in which it doesn't apply (at least there shouldn't be).
