I just got half life 2, and I'm pretty interested in counterstrike; however, I could use some tips on how to shed some newbness. I've always been pretty decent at fps, but CS doesn't seem too friendly to the beginner. Most of the time I'm not sure what I really should be doing or where I should be going. Also, it doesn't help that most people playing the game having doing it for quite some time. Any advice?

de_mapname = a bomb map, terrorist bomb a site, cts defend site
cs_mapname = hostage rescue map, terrorist defend their hostages, cts try to rescue
as_mapname = vip map, terrorist try to kill vip, cts defend the vip
aim_maps = no objective other than killing opposite team (working on aim?)
fy_maps= basically aim maps but different (smaller)

as for what to do while actually playing?... use the radar, follow teamates, help teamates and learn maps... aside from teamwork skills you need lots of this... http://media.putfile.com/FPS-doug

:D

damn, now that BF2's being a little bitch again, it may be time to dust off CS:S...de_dust, here I come!!

With most guns, always keep your crosshairs at head level. This cuts down on aiming time dramatically. If you like using the AK, keep it at chest level (recoils up to the head, although the first shot from the AK is always dead on once you get that good).

burst fire is your friend. anything else would be erratic spraying. try sqeezing the trigger for more than a few secs and you'll even miss with an auto a foot away especially if you're strafing. keep your aim steady and tap it while standing still strafe stop shoot crouch shoot jump strafe stop shoot. rinse and repeat.

running and gunning will get you killed real quick. try using your team as a meatshield.

not really my cup of tea that is cs. this game penalizes the rusher too much for my taste.

fire at some walls with all the guns, and pay attention to the recoils. It will help you to be more accurate with your bursts, and to judge how accurately someone shooting at you. It's not 100% though, there will be the odd random shot that hits you in the face.

lol, I played for about a week before I got my first intentional kill.

With most automatic weapons, keep your aim at neck level and shoot in short burst. Recoil will help you get those tasty headshots.

If you are going to run in like a moron and attempt to take out a hole bunch of enemies, use the old "spray and pray" tactic. Basicly, you aim at their feet and unload clips into the group. If you are lucky enough, you will get headshots.

Deagle can be incredibly cheap sometimes. It's one of the only guns that can keep shots fairly accurate, even when your running/jumping.

TMP is another good/cheap gun. Just unload and aim at the upper chest and your bound to score headshots that way.

well play the game.camper strike. Just hide behind a crate and wait for somoneto walk by and shot them in the back!!!! Thats how most anyone plays..... god i hate that game. * goes back to playing Unreal 2004* ROAD KILL

kill in console helps... All the cool kids do it...

Play aim maps to learn the guns.

ya just play aim maps to statr then learn all the basics of maps... i would recommend getting good at aim maps and the shooting system first tho... once u get good at shooting u kill anything u want no matter if u know the map or not... u just get boom headshots all over the place... i play with no sound and just music all the time now and that helps my game sense a lot too

I whole-heartedly that you not even waste hard drive space with this game. I guaran-mo-damn-tee that playing this you will run up against condescending, assh0li$h, satanic, 1337, maniacal, obessive, !!!!!!s who are out to ruin your game and will say the dumbest shit they can come up with to get a laugh out of their pimply faced bong-sucking friends at your expense. You will have more fun looking at the graphics than the quality of play that this game can offer.

Not only that, you're pretty late to the game, so you'll have to deal with the twitch-masters who invest 20+ hours per day into this game and can headshot you while running backwards, eating a slice of pizza and getting head under a computer desk from a German dragqueen. It's fun for the first 5 minutes maybe, but the community for this game is just sickening. You'd probably have more fun with HL2 DeathMatch, honestly.

You should learn not to let the assholes bother you, and really just play the game.

i must say i do enjoy heckling people in servers just cause they get so riled up by a few silly comments... gotta love the older folks with the big ego's

I am not sure if they fixed the hitboxes yet, but they used to trail or lead the player so you wouldn't have to shoot at the player but in front or behind them.

I play it every now and then when I get bored with BF2.

fy_iceworlds a good practice map to get use to the game

also if ur not sure where to go in certain maps, just follow the mob and ull get use to it pretty fast after a few rounds

I'd say, hit up a deathmatch server, once the plugin is fixed, of course. It's great for playing with diff weapons, that, or a fy map. They're both good for a laugh. As for general playing, learn the maps.

"No Clue" after a bomb plant is usually a bad sign of not knowing them. Hit up more pubs, and play different maps, you'll be fine.. learn what works for you, not others, weaponwise. Spec the people who kill you, then them, and so on, and get a good feel for what they're planning, the player movement, and where they're going. Last but not least, don't buy an awp, start pistol, deagle or usp, and go nuts after that. good luck.

Sounds like someone had a bad experience. :D

I think CS is pretty friendly to the beginner, with all the random bullshit that happens. I mean, it seems pretty easy for a newb to run into a server, equip themselves with a silenced m4a1, and spray and pray and get headshots with the last bullet of their clip... ;D Honestly though, CS has a pretty low learning curve. If you want to get magically better, its pretty easy to just leave your crosshair at head level at all times so when someone pops out from around the corner you have a better chance of nailing them in the head.

Oh yeah, and dont fall for the crouching makes you more accurate thing. Crouching turns you into a giant target ;D! I find it easier to hit people by strafing left and right, and shooting one or two bullets at their head when I stop for a split second.

It is one of the simplest, yet most difficult games you will ever play.

Some good tips I have come to follow:

Subguns have the least recoil with the highest chance of a hit for new players, the MP5 and P90 seem to be the most "noob" friendly.

Shotguns are great for one shot kills, especially at close range, but never rush with one until you are an excellent shot.

Hug walls and corners as much as possible, always try to "peek" around corners to keep from walking in to an ambush. Walk slowly to keep from making a sound.

Grenades are not that effective, but are great to disorient people if they are grouped together.

Use sound as your ally, footsteps are easily heard.

Press F10. It's the win button. :D Ok, yeah that's old.

People pretty much got it, don't look around at the ground when you're moving, raising your weapon to fire gives your enemy all the time he needs to put one between your eyes.

Fire in bursts or in semi-automatic rhythm- I like to get a beat going "Pop. Pop-Pop. Pop. Pop-Pop." I personally prefer semi-automatic versus bursts; ultimate control.

Don't be stupid. ie throwing flash bangs at your own team or firing at teammates with ff on (watch your effing radar).

no no F10 is to start a vote for a pistol round :D

I like watching (reading) people arguing who is more of a noob and someone ALWAYS says
"ME!? a noob? I've been playing since beta!"

Go into console and type
bind "mouse1" "kill"
It's an aimbot, built right into the game, it never misses.

Just make sure to take your time. Being quiet and listening to your enemy's footsteps is just like having a wallhack. (wear headphones)

Oh, and ignore BS urban legends about hitboxes being wrong. The propogators of said legends will post links to videos which were done wrong and try to pass them off as evidence supporting their myth.

Man don't be giving German dragqueens a bad name like that. Sheesh.

one thing that really works well is to just stay in one spot all the time and dont move much ..that way the enemy has time to kill you easier

sniper wars with you using pistol and other guy has an awp is always fun too.

use your scroll wheel only for cycling through your weapons because it takes longer

with automatic weapons remember ...the longer you hold down your trigger ...the more bullets you can get rid of.

try not to use your walk or crouch commands to often cause they just slow you down

if your defending something ..always try and use smoke nades in long tunnels/hallways so you cant see the enemy coming up on you

if you are the last guy alive on your team ..try to find a good place to hide until time runs out

..and always remember ...when your team does a team rush via a particular route .. just go your own way ..do your own thing ..maybe look at the wall textures or hop in the water to see it splash ..or just hang out in your spawn area and admire everyones sprays.

They're not "BS urban legends". Anyone who plays the game and pays attention can clearly see that you can shoot in front or behind people and get headshots. When I first started playing, ever since I've gotten CS I've found it weird that I've been headshotted a lot while running behind cover (especially with servers that show the line of the bullet) and I noticed that shots DO hit and kill people that are out of the path of the bullet.

The death beam from Mani Mod? LOL. That is your reasoning? The death beam is not calculated at the exact time of impact, but instead a few miliseconds later, so if the victim falls or the shooter jumps or moves after the fatal shot, the death beam will NOT be in the right place. It's there for fun and to show you how you were killed.

This subject is been done to death over on the Steam forums. The hitbox myth has been debunked. You are blaming your lag on the hitbox myth.

OH HAHA HAHA Do these ever get old?

good tips, ignor asshats like the guy quoted above.

When you connect to a server, ask what good rates are for the server, most people will tell you what they are running.

Learn to use the M4 and the AK, single shots with the AK, if you cant kill them in the first couple shots it over anyway. M4 3-4 round bursts. Use it with out the surpessor unless you need to conceal your position. (last man standing for example) If you get close and have to spray, aim low, like neck to waist level. The recoil will travel up. this applies to both guns.

If you are low on funds go with the Deagle or MP5. Tips for the deagle, just use it, learn to hit with it. MP5 - low recoil, put the top hash on their face and spary. dont bother shooting at them over long distance as it is useless.

Walk, dont run. giving away your position is everything in this game.

Get a good headset - makes all the difference in the world.

Methodology, watch other people, watch where people camp, sit, whatever. IF you have an idea where someone will be you already have an advantage.

good luck.

The only "lag" I have is a hitbox that follows my character. You can call it a myth if you want, but I don't care. I don't feel like getting into one of these all-too-familiar "I'm right because a bunch of people at another forum told me so" arguments. I'm going by what I see, and what I have seen since the game came out, on multiple computers. Maybe you should load it up and go by what you see, too, instead of a debates on a forum.

Oh, I am familiar with the game. I've been playing it nonstop since it came out.

You can lean on your hitbox cructch if ya want. I guess if you need an excuse to blame however good or poor you play the game on, it's as good of an excuse as any.
