Countdown to the Vega Architecture Preview

I hope the drummer boy is setting pace for the AMD driver and software support team before launch day.

Am I the only one that saw the ADT security advertisement inside this advertisement? (See 0:17; Its Blinking.) Guess AMD needed a little help generating the revenue haha!

Don't go towards the LIGHT, nothing ever good happens in the light lol.

Thats not an advertisement lol.. Ide say it is really part of that building.

My thoughts on the video are well explained in the other thread so I won't repeat them here: I will however say that i have high hopes for Vega. Not as something that can provide me a viable upgrade and certainly not a Volta competitor, but just as a good card in general. I'm hoping for around 1080 performance or between the 1070 and 1080 at a price that gives Nvidia a kick in the balls and restart the price wars of a few years ago (hopefully without the price fixing of a few years ago).

Perhaps they are trying to imply they have tons of stock ready to ship with all those drums in the warehouse.

I think Zarathustra[H] makes a great point towards the direction of the story AMD is telling with this 90 second ad for the preview of Radeon Vega. And like Derangel who said he's already explained his piece about AMD's new video tech I've already said the same thing about AMD for years: Last 2-3 generations when they've released a truly high end enthusiast part (excluding RX 460-480) AMD's tech on paper has been far more powerful than nVIDIA each and every time. But with AMD it's always the same story and here is no different which goes to 1 word: drivers. Drivers...Drivers...Drivers...DRIVERS! It's always the drivers being (currrently) 1.5-2.5 tech generations behind nVIDIA that has always kept AMD and the Radeon brand down. So for Raja Koduri and Roy Taylor this I say to them: "I don't care about what new technology you're harping on about this time, call me back when your DRIVERS are finally on par with nVIDIA's, call me back when you've caught up to them DRIVER wise and are toe-to-toe with them in every way and then maybe I'll actually be interested in what you have to say. And if you have caught up, go hard! If not, stay home." That is all and until next time I am out!

Oh like marching to the beat of a drum driving forward? I get it.

Perhaps it will mean that they will have rhythmic per week, biweekly or monthly driver updates to improve performance and fix bugs. Or something.

Or thousands marching to the beat individually for a sole purpose under one roof.

Perhaps you can beat it on your own or beat it together in the cloud.

The mind boggles. Fap fap

Just waiting for a price tag or I'll just go ahead burn some cash for 1070.

I sure hope all those drums were CG and not bought and stacked by AMD in a condemn building about ready to collapse. Now will Vega spank Nvidia's ass? It needs to perform well out the gate without future promises which may or may not materialized.

That being said, the trend on drivers for AMD is looking real good. Their DX 11 performance has improved dramatically not only on the Rx480 but other cards as well. I hope Vega will have strong drivers out the gate that exposes as much ability of the architecture as possible without a 2 year wait!

Performance/Price/Availability - Winning all three of those could make up for the last seven months of nothing in the high end.

He's smiling because he doesn't have to install Geforce Experience or he walked in to it hanging from the rafters. What a pos, required to use Shadowplay and requires an email address. Just experienced this sack of crap in the past hour, I'll use game performance killing Xbox DVR over this, the fact they full on advertise it uses half as much RAM now was just...wow, their drivers have gone down hill big time.

Odds are I'm still going to be going the 1080ti route assuming the price isn't completely absurd. I'm definitely willing to give Vega a look, though. Hopefully, they finally have something that can spark some competition again. Ryzen looks like it might be doing that on the CPU side, so maybe AMD can have success on the GPU front as well.

Unfortunately, they're in a position where they not only are going to need to be competitive with Nvidia with performance, they're going to have to beat them (not just compete) on price. All things being equal, most people will buy the Nvidia product, and there's no denying that. Hell, I think people would still buy Nvidia if the prices were within $50 of each other. If they can get a 1080 competitor out at, say, $450 they have a chance to move a lot of cards. That would put them at ~$100-150 cheaper than the competition, and that's probably the point where even loyal Nvidia customers would start to think twice. It would also probably be enough room to still be cheaper than Nvidia after the inevitable Pascal price cuts.

Nvidia will just drop price. This price stuff is non sense on high end video cards. AMD is better off just bringing out a card that performs. Trust me a high end card will move a lot of midrange cards. They can price the top end close to nvidia but they can have a whole lineup based on vega. Remember they have 300+ bracket totally wide open. Rx480 prices will stay where they are at and vega lineup will probably fill 300+ 2 cards. Goal is always to sell as many of the ones in 300-450 range. Like the 1070. I am suspecting two vega cards. One possibly giving you 1080 performance for 1070 price and one possible faster then 1080- 15% or so and price it slightly cheaper than 1080. If we see 1080ti that means nvidia is expecting vega top end to beat the 1080. Just as fury was pretty competitive but amd priced themselves out of competition and everyone chewed out the 4gb of ram.

For about 10 seconds, I thought that it was realtime-rendered in a Vega (what else could be the point of it?) and I was looking at all the details and felt really impressed at the cloth and hair... lol.
I guess the Poor Voltage pun was kind of clever.

What catches my eye is the 512TB Virtual Address Space and High Bandwidth Cache Controller - could we see the desktop gaming card coming with a 32GB-128GB SSD (option), caching all the game assets? Being rather transparent to the application via drivers and hardware?

Great, AMD is trying to start a civil war. I don't think they have the resources though. And there's usually more than just one drummer for marches, so AMD must be on the verge of bankrupcy for just being to afford one drummer. And the loads of drum in the warehouse... I'm not even going to bother read between the lines on this one.

Since AMD doesn't want to be the cheaper option, the only way it would work out for them is if they beat nVidia at least in performance. Othereise it would be a Fury X repeat. Released a few month behind nVidia and cost about the same.

Funny thing is that in some scenes the kid is using a germanic grip, and in others he's using something that's... supposed to be traditional, but is really just a poor imitation of it (only using thumb and index finger, fulcrum at the very butt of the stick half the time, in the middle of it for the other half, etc.), and on his right hand no less, which technically makes it reverse traditional, which is never, ever, used in marching percussion (that's not hyperbole, since one guy using reverse traditional would screw up everyone else on the line). It's almost like whomever was in charge of the video found out about traditional grip half way through production, made the actor switch to it, and ran out of money to re-shoot the old footage the same way. Or maybe it was the other way around and they started with reverse trad. Not that it matters in the slightest, but I still find it funny :p

I think the video means that AMD hasn't been sitting around doing nothing, they were just trapped in a warehouse full of drums, and that boy being familiar with drums heard their plea for help and let them out.

by "make some noise" one can only assume they mean the tortured cries of that poor kid who's about to face the same fate as the hundreds before him.

maybe the next commercial will relate to the speed of the cards, and we'll get to see the kid running for his life as fast as he can.

It would make more sense for it to have a slot to install an SSD as having a built in SSD would just be silly in regards to reliability.
Or maybe it will have software support in order to just set up a special cache using a drive on your computer.

You can already do that with the software for certain Marvell controllers, newer Intel controllers, as well as software specifically designed to do so such as MaxVeloSSD.

But if it was tied directly to the video card and bypassed the OS and other hardware.. that might just give a nice increase in performance for certain things.

I really don't know what Vega has but SSDs on cards from AMD already has been established on their professional cards for GPU compute - if that ability moves to the gaming cards would be very interesting. Now looking at patents may expose more of what Vega will have.

This patent is very interesting due to dealing with memory for the GPU:

Vega Cache controller? HBM2 with SSD? .

The other interesting patent is this:

Looks like an refinement to Polaris Primitive discard engine.

Another memory patent which looks Vega orientated:

i think the boy realized that he wasn't special anymore, and that he was just another sucker that bought an overpriced piece of consumer goods that are poorly stored in squalor.

I'm full in on the Vega and hoping for the best. I want a gtx1080 and the only way I can afford it is for the price to come down. For that to happen, I need AMD to hit nothing less than a homerun. It is the only way to make Nvidia react to new competition.
