Core i7 7820x vs 8700K

If you dont need the featureset of X299, 8700K is the obvious choice.

am currently in same boat, i do overclocking comp stuff a lot so x299 is very tempting but i can't trust intel to release CFL on x299 otherwise i probably would have made the jump to X299 sense its such a flexible platform so am going to sit back and wait because the 8700k is looking to be a really great gaming and 3D CPU going forward.

Atleast with x299 you'll have more CPU upgrades before having to need a new Mobo

When it comes to intel that is pretty much wishful thinking. I don't even consider using the same mobo for an upgrade these days.

The 7820x is ony about $180ish difference over the slower 8700k system with it's slower dual channel memory.

In fact some of the best motherboards you can get for the x299 are only $250 - $280. The reviews on these boards are way more favorable than the expensive x299 boards. So motherboard wise, you're not going to have to spend any more on a great x299 board.

So it really comes down to ...if you have the extra $200 for x299/7820x

Don't listen to people that suggest you wait for the 8700k. Why? Money is their motivating factor or lack there of ..... It's certianly not performance or they would be telling you to get the 7820x.

If you're one of these deep IT/coder cpu feature nerds, then sure their could be some obscure feature that might be missing between the two but for 99.9% of everyone out there this is not going to effect anyone.

The only downside to x299 is the slight additional cost. Which can be mitagated by not fucking off your extra money for a week or two. Fastfood? Eat at home? Girlfriend? Do something free. Etc. Easy to recoup/save $200 if your motivated, patient, etc.

7820x provides 8 cores / 16 threads, Quad channel memory. It's extremely fast at gaming and productivity. Resellability on a 7820x system would be higher than that of a 8700k

If you have a Microcenter near you the 7820x is only $549. That doesn't count the $30 Motherboard/CPU combo they give you as well.

If you hate tax and can wait 3 or 4 days I've heard that Newegg matches Microcenter now. Not sure if this is true.

I just built a 7820x with 16gb of 4400mhz memory, will be adding an additional 16gb soonish. 1tb EVO 960 NVMe SSD. Insane performance ......

I did not expect to see these responses... Tagged for further interest

Well, as someone with an unlimited PC budget, I was aiming at an 8700K simply because it appears to have superior single-thread performance. Given how much is still dependent on single-thread performance I find it difficult to buy a chip that compromises on it.

It looks like many folks are getting a pretty good overclock out of the 7820- 4.3Ghz at least, right?

4.3 is the default all core turbo 2.0, 4.5 would be turbo 3.0 for 2 strongest cores although I see all my cores jump to that speed, not sure hwinfo is reporting everything correct though.

Pardon my ignorance: that's without an overclock right? So you should be able to get a very respectable single core speed right?

They seem to overclock pretty easily, haven't tried on mine yet, but seen people getting 4.6 on all cores pretty easily.

Mine is doing well as you can tell by my sig. I'm going to delid and go custom water and I expect to hit at least 4.9 with this chip.

A bit of topic, but man, pisses me off that we have to delid a overclocking (k series) CPU when it should be designed for it.

/Rant thanks for letting me rant.

On topic, if love to get a 7820x, but if like to get the highest performing single thread CPU, which from the leaks, it sure looks like it is the 8700k

So I am going to return my 8700k and get a 7820x instead. It just makes more sense to me as I am 90% gamer but that 10% I want to be a power user. I literally want to be a power user if you know what I mean.

You'll like the 7820X, it's a beast of a chip when overclocked on the core and mesh.

tis a great cpu, i had a misshap with my water loop and it apparently leaked on my mobo while i was at work last week and killed both so am running a 7740x till i can get it replaced but yeah you won't be disappointed

As nice as your 8700k overclocks I would sell it, especially with what people are paying for them on ebay.

If you play at anything higher than 2560x1440, the 7820x is the way to go. Do you play at 3440x1440? The 8700k is awesome, but it is mainstream. It's platform was simply not designed to be as robust as x299. I can upgrade to the fastest desktop CPU ever made by just swapping chips. That is kind of a nice thought.

Well that is a possibility I would sell it here though. I hate EBAY with my very soul.
