Just started to notice this. I have changed drivers so many times its hard to know where it began. Not sure if I had the issue with a single card or not but im getting major FPS drops during air strike scenes.. drops into the 50s @ 1920x1200 rest of game settings maxed. My GTX280 would do the same but expected better out of a pair of 5870s. I am thinking of putting my 2nd crossfire bridge back on to see if it changes.

Here is what Fraps is showing for a couple min of playing. The big actions scenes make it dip.

Frames
8623

Time (ms)
61739

Min
53

Max
267

Avg
139.669

Here is a COD4 bench with Fraps.... its weird I never saw the 45fps dip.. not sure I ever saw it drop below 200.

Frames
16745

Min

Max
659

Ahhhh..... Those framerates have no issues...

The wierd frame rate drops come around when airstrikes and the flamethrower are being used, right?

Yeah, mostly air strikes. Just sad my GTX280 could hold the same minimum frames.

Yeah, on consoles (x360/ps3 - friends ps3) and lower end systems, I only got frame rate drops when using the flamethrower [Du hast ein Flammenwerfer] and during airstrikes.

Haven't tested on newer hardware, as I just don't game anymore.

I might expect it out of a console but not out of the hardware I am running. Hope future drivers fix the issue. Or maybe its just the game or driver I am running. 9.11 beta4

Those framrate dips are normal. I have the same on my 5870, and I've had it on my 4890 and GTX 260. Those scenes are heavy with particle effects, which can and will strain even today's high end cards, especially if you run with AA at a high res. As to why the GTX280 didn't have the problem, it could be that the G200 card's architecture is designed in a way that it handles the sudden added strain better than AMD/ATI. Also, since the 5870 is still a very new card, it could be that AMD hasn't had the time to optimize the Crossfire scaling. With your dual gpu config, you'll still see noticeable dips, but I would think that it should only drop to 60-70fps. Do you happen to have Adaptive AA enabled? That could account for it going so low...

BTW, nice frame rates. I'm really thinking about going Crossfire when Eyefinity works with dual cards, which should be when the 5870X2(5970?) is released. 3 1920X1200 monitors in portrait mode is really enticing.

GTX280 had the same dips and somewhat worse. I just expected the dual crossfire to hold up better.

Might be a CPU thing if minimums are the same across both cards. If you can, overclock by 200-300MHz and see if there is any improvement.

Better yet, underclock to see if it gets worse.

4.0GHz OC is already quite a bit

I still am pointing to the airstrikes and the flamethrower. As SicKlown42012 said, it is a lot of particles incomming at once.

Drops are normal in COD w/ my 5870 too in intense game play and game effects, like bombs, lots of players, etc.

Yeah im starting to think its just the game and not anything wrong. Glad to see everyone else is getting the same results.

Ah, didn't realize he was already running at 4 GHz :p

FYI.... I dropped back to one card and my minimum FPS is back up. My peak FPS is lower and My average is lower but the game runs smoother and where I was getting 40s before I am getting uppper 50s low 60s for these dips. Its on average 10 FPS better on the minimum side vs two cards. So I sold my other card :)
