Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

So, I'm either getting this as a gift or getting it myself for the holidays; anything I should know going in?

Being good at parrying makes the game a lot more enjoyable. You can dodge at first to get an idea of a new enemy's timing (dodge has a larger safe window), then you can try parrying them once you get the timing down. No shame in installing a mod to make the parrying slightly easier if you're getting frustrated. Getting your ass kicked at first is fine. Go in blind and enjoy.

A lot of people don't know about equipping luminas in the beginning. It's kinda of like accessories, they increase stats and give special bonuses. Also, many enemy attacks have both visual and audio cues that help you time parries.

I did 100 Super Jumps in SMRPG (the old one); timed hits shouldn't be a major issue for me.

Don't be afraid to go down side paths thinking that you are wasting time. Basically every side path I went down had a neat little reward. I recommend taking every single one. Was frustrating watching my GF play and she would skip them or just not realize... I guess you sort of get intuition for them with experience playing games. That intuition is always rewarded.

Software Engineer here: UI scaling is *not* fun. I get that smaller studios are going to push doing this out a bit, since resources are best spent elsewhere.
UI scaling is generally easy if the assets are good quality.

JFC you've triggered my PTSD with this.. I tried to do this again in the SMRPG remake when it came out and gave up after prolly 2 hours or trying for that prize.

Having an OLED helps a ton; can't imagine doing it on an LCD.

Yeah, was on my C9 OLED with a wired pro controller and tried handheld on my Switch OLED as well. Never got it.. I think you only have a 1-3 frame window to time those jumps which is insane.

“It Is Hard for Me to Accept That Expedition 33 Is a Better Game Than Elden Ring”, Says Industry Veteran

Industry veteran Rich Vogel feels that Expedition 33 is a 'really good game' but also can't quite wrap his head around it being 'better' than Elden Ring, which he praised for its brilliant open world design:

"I am very happy that Expedition has been honored with so many awards. It is a really good game. It is hard for me to accept that Expedition 33 is a better game than Elden Ring. I had more fun playing Elden Ring. The open-world design was brilliant. I like that it did not force you down paths like Skyrim and gave you the freedom to go anywhere in the world. You started out being hunted and became the hunter"

Another industry veteran Greg Street also replied that Elden Ring is much more replayable...Street called Expedition 33 a masterpiece but also noted that the game's emotional story makes people more forgiving of other faults, such as the level design:

"I imagine I will play Expedition 33 once or twice more in my lifetime, which is typical for single player RPGs for me. I predict I will go back to Elden Ring ten times or more. The replayability potential between the two is hard to compare. I think 33 is a masterpiece for sure, but I think people’s love for the story and characters leads them to overly forgive other places where the game is weaker, such as level design"

😐👍

Are you being pedantic because the devs are French? The gameplay is literally the standard JRPG systems and loop. What is NOT JRPG about it?
So lets just call every turn-based RPG a JRPG, then.

Lets be reasonable, baldur gates, divinity, banner saga, fallout, eyes of the beholder, jagged alliance, star trail are not JRPG just by having turn.

The scripted storyline, characthers based quite a bit, world->battle screen transition and its battle menu/mechanics, the past-future aesthetic/big hairs/guns and blades mix, materia a la Final fantasy 7 and many direct inspirations to them. And the dev saying how much it is trying to be one in every way

Baldurs gate doesn't have that final fantasy mode where it's one side against another and they kind of take turns jumping into action...JRPG mechanics. Thankfully exp33 does not have the over-the-top art with hair and weapons twice as big as the characters wielding it. Though their transportation friend has that JRPG smell to it

Its whatever paper Mario is, so go from there. But genres as a whole are irrelevant these days, and while an interesting thought experiment, certainly not anything to get excited over.

Agreed.

Technically Elden Ring is an RPG from Japan.

the concept of a "genre" is descriptive, it exists outside of the things it attempts to describe, and the whole purpose of "genre" is to set expectations, ease communication, help discoverability.

It's not a fence that contains things in a binary way, rather it's an adjective that can apply to something more or less depending on suitability. Something can be "just a little bit rock" and something else can be "rock". While "Hard Rock" is still "Rock", it describes something else. And no one thing claims the title of being the "most Rock'n'Roll".

Just like JRPGs. We know what games are defined by the genre, but defining it and trying to make it like a fence where everything inside IS a JRPG and everything outside ISN'T... is not how Genres work.

That said: you CAN say something like "I don't see Expedition 33 as a JRPG, and these are the reasons:" but you're talking about an inherently subjective descriptor. You can't be disproven on your lived experience, but your opinion may not help anyone, or have any useful impact on the conversation.

I can't get the timing right? Should I just decrease difficulty and move on?
The parry timing is later than you think it is. You're most likely too early.

But honestly, the difficulty can ramp up real quick, I over-levelled (read: grinded) in one section and got 10 levels above what I thought I needed and essentially cruised through the main story. This was on standard difficulty. If you run into an enemy/boss that just wipes you, explore somewhere else, gain levels, and then come back stronger.

Yeah but for that I need to be invested in the game which I am not. I have just heard that it's best thing since sliced bread so wanted to give a shot again. The game is strange af and I don't have the mental bandwidth to invest myself in it. Also why I am right now really put off from RPGs in general. I just can't be arsed to play an RPG. Too much time investment for very little pay off these days. Also every damn thing is an RPG. But this one is also strange enough to give me a tickle to keep trying to finish. I already lost interest I think 4 times. So wanted to ask if dropping difficulty makes that parry and dodge usable or if it doesn't change then I can safely delete and move on.

I am level 5 and have been running away from most things I can avoid.

II can tell you this is an artsy-fartsy magical world emotional character drama. This is legitimately not for everyone. This is (almost literally) an arthouse French film. It sings to a certain soul, but not to all souls.

If your first reaction isn't "holy fuck I can't wait to learn more about this strange story/character/world" then I can guarantee you won't enjoy the game.

Don't do it will only make the game harder as you'll be missing xp and items. Instead of lowering the difficulty you can install the easier parrying mod from nexusmods (link), which might be a preferable option. 1.3x easier might be a good start.
Dying is perfectly fine the first time you encounter a new enemy, you should be attempting to learn it's parry timing even if you die or have to restart the fight. Almost everything, including spells, can be parried - and it's very satisfying hitting a bunch of perfect parries in a row, especially on the more difficult mobs.

Got it. Thanks for recommending the mod.

the best tipp i got when playing it was look for a slight zoom in at the moment of an attack, best seen at the edges of the screen. thats when youre supposed to parry

Haha, you're right but also not right about about the person needing to find the world amazing. It does play to a certain type of person, and oozes melancholy which isn't for everyone.
But the world building didn't interest me that much, but I could still really appreciate what they pulled off. Especially appreciated the plot twist (that's when things got more interesting). So you don't have to love everything in order to enjoy the game and appreciate it.

Got this in the summer, but didn't start until Christmas vacation. Probably close to 40 hours into it and likely high enough level to run through the rest of the game, but not in a hurry to finish it. I've been having a blast exploring, grinding out levels and just taking in the world.

It does feel a lot like the older FF games, especially FF-X, but with dodging, parrying and a french twist to it. It reminds me how much I preferred the SP FF games that came before FF XII. Might actually have to replay FF-X for the nth time after I'm done with this.

Which game journalists would be crying? It got glazed REALLY hard by the gaming press. Opencritic has it sitting at a 92 average score with 98% of reviews recommending it. The lowest scores I see out there are 7/10. I don't feel like anyone is crying that it is doing well.
