Alan, welcome back man, too bad you wont be staying
Ya it's good for the science, but in the end the science gets done no matter what, just because you are under a different name doesn't matter at all to Stanford
Before this it was a comp between a bunch of people with no other reason to fold other than it's a good thing to do. Now, enter the EVGA marketing giant and it kinda kills the competition. It's already all over the EVGA board, been there for weeks already.
It's kinda like playing in a church baseball league. I loved playing then because it was a just a bunch of guys/gals getting together to have a good time with a little rivalry thrown in for good measure. Now imagine you show up at the first game of the play offs and instead of playing River St. Methodists you're playing against the Yankees, and not only that but they brought every major news outlet this side of Iraq to watch you get creamed and promote the Yankees.
It's kinda like that. Or if your golfing with a buddy (worst sport ever but thats another thread lol) and suddenly Tiger woods shows up and not only kicks your ass and gets his agent to make a commercial out of it, he also brags about how he can get so many more women than you can. Sometimes things go from fun to not fair and not so fun real quick.
I know, its quite frustrating. But you guys don't have EVGA's tire tracks across your backs yet, so just what are you complaining about?
Almost the same thing happened years ago with Google. For those who don't know, they had a custom client bundled in the Google toolbar (with permission, nothing shady like TeamFTL). What sucked is that the team number was hard coded into it, you had to resort to registry hacks to change it. And naturally, Google says this is a good thing, so I better run it right? And Google was crushing every team as hard or even harder than EVGA is now. Enough people complained and even quit, so they got stuck up top with Default and not considered a "real" team.
For now its good for raising awareness of the cause and good for science. And once the corporate money runs out, they'll have to compete on our level again. The only question is how long the corporate bankroll lasts. I can't imagine the answer to that is forever.
Cliffs: we all lived through Google, we'll live through EVGA too.
