Are we going to make a showing in the Chimp Challenge this year? Haven't heard anyone mention it and its coming up quickly. Looks like EVGA is getting ready.

    edit:
Thread summary (3-15-2010): It seems doubtful that Team #33 would be invited this year. Even if we were invited, most are not interested in participating after the issues we had last year.

    edit:
(3-17-2010) seems we have been invited, look on page 4 of this thread

It is very unlikely that we will be invited.

noo.. I was looking forward to cc :(
well if we do get invited, let's put a warning on the cc thread that this is a competition for fun and that it includes trash talk. Last year was a mess because some people didn't seem to know that fact and took the competition personal.

Just for the record I would like to do it, if we are invited.

Also I think we need to setup a system to where our folders are notified. There are a lot of guys on the [H]orde that are not active on the boards.

Also I remember from last year that people were getting upset because certain people did switch their farm over.

Also people need to stay with it until we complete the challenge not just give up when the first team crosses the finish line.

Its just for fun, and if we were to be invited I think people need to remember this.

We are different from most other teams that participate in the CC. The CC raises much controversy and dissension among teammates at the [H], sometimes causing permanent changes here. If history is any indicator, it will do more harm to the team than be a positive motivational influence, which was its original purpose. IMHO, if something has a determined objective (whatever it may be) and falls far short of it, then it defeats its own purpose. Even a little contention causes deep wounds.

I have no strong opinion either way, but if for whatever reasons we cannot compete the way the other teams do, maybe we should take a break this year?

Agreed. I've participated the past 2 years in the CC, and just reading the boards during that time seemed as though team 33 was going to disband altogether. I agree with Apollo that maybe we should take a break this year from it.

The [H]orde is different when it comes to being a team. There are waaay to many people folding in the shadows. Thus, when CC time comes, our strongest participants are obviously the ones on the boards a lot, which is a small percentage of the whole team. Moreover, team 33 doesn't only focus on F@H, but also BIONIC and WCG (if they're the same, forgive me). Thus, dissent begins to form due to the misunderstand within our own team. People being to say, "why are you not folding for CC?" "How come PersonX didn't switch over?" etc, etc...

Let's take a break from it, regroup our efforts, and maybe next year we'll actually prepare a gameplan for this. I can tell you right now, if we're invited, I'll switch over, but me and 20 other people aren't going to win it. And of those 20, 3 will be new guys who will take the trash talking too far, 2 of them will become offended, and at least 1 will leave the [H]orde. Once again, we should've started planning for this in January, letting people know and get comfortable with the idea and setup a strategy. I agree with Nitro in saying that we need a way to contact those "shadow folders". Once we can get people informed about the CC, then maybe we can have a solid showing. Until then, I say we stay away and just chug along in the name of science.

I don't think I could some it up better than the guy above me

+1 for a break while we get the team in order, I mean look how much more active we are this year than last year, one more year of reaching out to older shadow folders and well be good to go

couldn't have said it better, but that being said we need to keep up our recruitment efforts up, we havnt done much lately like we were 6 months ago

Thanks :D As far as keeping recruitment up, we were doing well until like 2 days ago. According to hardfolding, we lost like 125 people in 2 days  At least the slope of our trend line is still positive...

Last year's CC was the first thing of this sort I had been part of since I started folding about a month before that. This should have been a fun thing to do IMHO but it didn't end up being that way for me considering all the BS that was going on. Being new to this I was excited about the whole thing but that went out the window when people got called out for not being part of the CC. I was a noob to this but I got it right away that this is all voluntary and not everybody wants to go through the hassle of switching over their farms.

Anyway I'm in favor of taking a break and regrouping.

Atleast we all seem to be together on this, I'd rather see the team together like this than in-fighting over a .jpg

It dies better for the team to be together, and the better the team is the better it is for the science

Either way the points go to 33, but I think we get more a team feeling uniting for the cause of defending a title, not just to get some pic of a monkey

except we're not defending anymore... I miss that two years ago when I first joined CC. I felt like I was part of something, upholding a tradition of excellence or something... then it all fell down.

I hope with -bigadv and whatnot that GPU dominance will be over and the playing fields will level out. I know Fermi will be released soon, but even then, I hope the CPU bonuses will keep things fair. I feel that EVGA had a huge bonus due to video card folding and the type of product their sell and heavily promote.

We'll see how they do during the CC and use it as a benchmark to ramp up to.

it comes down to the advertising, we simply can't reach the same number of prospective folders as they can, and they know that everyone they email at least can fold

The buy out is only half the battle

Well, I was an active participant over the past two years, and I have no ill feelings towards other if they did or did not participate themselves. Other people do get quite emotional about the CC and really get into it. Deep down, I'm here for the folding and the science it contributes to, not some meaningless contest to see who can reach a set number ahead of the others. Games don't interest me any more.

I have an Aunt who is in and out of the hospital with cancer, and I would much rather see people get serious about crunching protien data for the right reasons instead of bragging rights to some finish line. I can't say I would be an active participant this year if we were invited.

for me it doesnt matter ill do it.. i mean hell i dont even fold under my own name so it doesnt matter to me.. the question will be how involved do i get into it and if i even want to bother trying the win SMP client to run the A3's during the challenge.. though honestly if EVGA gets involved in it whats the point.. they basically bought all the PPD and i just dont see a reason to bother doing it.. takes all the fun out of the challenge..

I saw one of these kittehs that's in this picture at a winery tour recently.
Stuff I learned from the docents and saw in person: Cheetahs purr but don't expect a growl or a roar. It's makes sounds like a cross between a puppy and a kitten.

Also, Cheetahs prefer to avoid fights.

Well, the point of the CC is to raise awareness and get new people involved. So I can't really say that would be a bad thing. The million PPD that OCN pulled out of their ass last year was definitely good for science.

Alan, welcome back man, too bad you wont be staying

Ya it's good for the science, but in the end the science gets done no matter what, just because you are under a different name doesn't matter at all to Stanford

Before this it was a comp between a bunch of people with no other reason to fold other than it's a good thing to do. Now, enter the EVGA marketing giant and it kinda kills the competition. It's already all over the EVGA board, been there for weeks already.

It's kinda like playing in a church baseball league. I loved playing then because it was a just a bunch of guys/gals getting together to have a good time with a little rivalry thrown in for good measure. Now imagine you show up at the first game of the play offs and instead of playing River St. Methodists you're playing against the Yankees, and not only that but they brought every major news outlet this side of Iraq to watch you get creamed and promote the Yankees.

It's kinda like that. Or if your golfing with a buddy (worst sport ever but thats another thread lol) and suddenly Tiger woods shows up and not only kicks your ass and gets his agent to make a commercial out of it, he also brags about how he can get so many more women than you can. Sometimes things go from fun to not fair and not so fun real quick.

Darn, I was going to point out that the trash talking is already beginning while I have my tamales out from the mowing thread... :D

Yeah, I really forgot about it about 5 minutes after I turned off my CPU client and turned BOINC back on. Make it simple this year: Rule #1, if ya wanna do it do it, if ya don't don't, but either way, keep yer mouth shut about the other side. Anyone folding for the monkey can trash talk those folding for the monkey, but any trash talking (read: insulting, degrading, etc) of those not in it can have a short visit from the banhammer... All in the name of team unity, of course
