Can't overclock Q6600!

CPU: Q6600 G0
Motherboard: P45-based ASUS P5Q-E

Stable: 3.7Ghz - 410 FSB - 1.6v
Un-stable: 4.0Ghz - 445 FSB - 1.9v

Summary: Even if I go up to 1.9v, I can't get anything above 3.7Ghz stable on this board. My 680i board couldn't even get 2.7Ghz stable, so this is still an improvement, but I am unhappy! Over-volting the NB doesn't help either.
It POSTs fine, actually. But when it loads up Windows 7 (not a fresh install), it BSODs with STOP Error '0x0000124'. Sometimes, it reaches Windows, but after 20 seconds of ORTHOS, it BSODs.

Is it my CPU and 2 years of being literally stuck to the crummy 680i SLi A1 board? Otherwise, I am very disappointed with the P45 boards. 410Mhz FSB on a Quad?! WTF!
 
I am pretty sure the average overclock for a Q6600 is 3.6ghz give or take.

It's not the P45 board, it's your processor, not to mention you're running 8gb of memory.

Good luck, and if you want to go higher, get a Q9550. You might as well get a new cpu anyway since you're running 1.9vcore into the Q6600.........
 
Yeah, that's a pretty good OC. I didn't even get to 3.6Ghz with my old Q6600 G0. 3.4 was about all it would do.

And pumping 1.9V through your chip isn't going to make it any easier to overclock, it's just going to kill your CPU a lot faster.

Because regardless of temps, voltages, or anything else that you control, some CPUs simply aren't stable past a certain point. Period.

First of all, it's Kentsfield, not Conroe. And even with watercooling, exceedingly few 65nm quads are capable of reaching speeds higher than 3.6GHz. You should be happy that you got 3.7GHz out of your chip, not angry that it won't go any higher.

because... a 1.9vcore is way over the set intel max.

You can do 4.0GHz, but don't expect it to last long. Electromigration, along with a few other factors will kill that level of OCing, and start taking the chip down with it.

EDIT: you also got a full GHz out of it, and then some...

Thats a really good OC, what are you so dissapointed in? Thats a 50 percent OC you have going. Even lapped I couldn't get my Q6600 stable past 3.3 ghz.

If you can't get above 3.3Ghz, you either have a bad board (anything below P35), or you have lousy cooling.

If I can get to 3.6Ghz, mildly stable, on 680i, anyone should be able to get to 3.8Ghz on P45.

So stop being so pessimistic, because I know it's possible.
 
I'm sorry to say this, but you aren't going to get that high without some kind of super cooling it doesn't matter how high you go on vcore and your temps don't matter unless they are way below zero. If you want to try then go ahead but it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to get past your current partially stable 3.7GHz. Also boards don't determine how high CPUs overclock each CPU is different, so while somebody elses CPU might go to 4GHz yours might not.

Really? You bought a cpu that runs stable at the stock voltage and speed. You did not buy a cpu that was guaranteed to run at 3.7 or 4ghz. It's just not going to happen. You should be lucky you got what you did out of it.

Not trying to be a dick, but that is a damn good overclock for a Q6600. If you want something faster, you might want to try a different chip as others have suggested.

Just because you aren't happy with something doesn't mean trying real hard will make it reach your expectations.

I want a car that will do 170mph, but I drive an econobox. Maybe I will just peg the accelerator to the floor and hope for the best? Or... OR, I could buy something else that is designed to meet my goals that are otherwise unrealistic with my current setup.

Logical people think in these terms...
 
I have had my e6600 on 2 different highly rated OCing boards and one decently rated board. All of the boards should have been capable of 400-425 FSB easily at stock board voltages. My chip wont do anything more than 3ghz as very stable (I can boot at 3.2 and 3.4 with decent temps, but not get it stable). In my case it is clearly the chip. Morale of the story, chips vary and are not created equal.

Pumping over 1.5-1.6v into a Conroe or Kentsfield is quite high, disturbingly high at 1.9v. Not just because of temps, but because of what the chips can handle. Still 3.7ghz is a great OC, be happy!

Why are you so set on the 4ghz mark? Gains start to be minimal after the initial jump to 3-3.4ghz.
 
quality p45 boards are generally good right up to 500mhz fsb but that's usually with dual core chips. i had two q6600 hit 3.6ghz with 1.35-1.40vcore on water and still measured under 60'c 4x orthos loaded. unfortunately, these chips would barely budge above 3.7ghz regardless of how much voltage i pumped into them. op has hit the wall with his chip if it no longer achieves stability with that much voltage pumped into it. he's living in an entirely different universe than the rest of us if he feels entitled to a 3.6+ ghz overclock.

Actually Conroe was a completely different and much more powerful, not to mention energy efficient core than Netburst.
 
my Q6600 on my 680i board didn't play nicely and was difficult to OC at 3 ghz so I decided to get a Gigabyte mobo which specs are in the sig. I had it stable at 3.51 ghz which was the maximum I can go but I decided to get it at 3.2 to make it last longer and there was no noticible difference from 3.51 and 3.2. If you want a 4 ghz cpu just get an i7 or Phenom II Black Edition quad core. If your cpu can be stable on 3.7 that's way awesome!

Your changing your tune now on us...before you were saying that it could not be the chip and had to be the board. That is what people were commenting on, that your chip might just be at the wall that most get to. We were not saying YOU CANT, you already said that you cant get higher, we were just saying that it is not unusual to hit the wall where you did and in fact you are actually performing better than most (albeit at huge voltage increases).

1.6v is already on the high end of safe for your chip. I would be happy with that sweet 3.7 OC you got and call it a day. Temps are only one thing to OCing...if you dont believe me go look at the guys who put chips under liquid nitrogen, etc. and still dont just have unlimited OC potential just because their chip is cool.

At this point just go i7 man, your sig shows you like to get the top of the line gear so I really dont know why you are not there already. It would be cheaper than continuing to buy boards and chips just to get a Q6600 a bit higher (which at this point seems like is not very likely).

So if you never hit 90C you can overclock infinitely? Man those guys running phenoms @ only 6ghz on liquid helium/nitrogen must be real noobs!
 
This was on air with tuniq 120. Did not push harder cause this was good enough for me cause memory kept crapping out.

Different chips run at different temps/voltages/specifications. My Q6600 was plenty happy at 3.2ghz, but needed quite a bit of volts to go to 3.4. I have an i7 that does 4ghz like it doesn't even care though. Every chip is different.

And 90C? The thermal oh-crap point for a G0 is 75C iirc.

Believe what you want to believe, but chip limitations are a simple fact. My Q9550 won't do 4GHz stably no matter how much voltage I pump into it. And it's not the board, because I've tested with higher FSBs. It's just something you have to accept.
And 90C? The thermal oh-crap point for a G0 is 75C iirc.
85C-90C depending on the chip.
 
My Q6600 B3 wouldn't go past 3.2, even on peltier/water setup and regardless of how much voltage I crammed through it.
