Canada Imposing Usage Based Internet Billing?

No, I think there will be cheaper plans with smaller caps. You know, like AT&T did with their tiered plans.
Those already exist. They come with the added benefit of lower speeds, too.

sign the petition guys, i know i did. bandwidth caps were a joke to begin with, our corrupt CRTC just went along with it and now they're just trying to take this a step further. the nonsense needs to stop.

so my friend phoned shaw about the bandwidth warnings and without him even mentioning it, they said outright that they were trying to run netflix out

there are cheaper plans with smaller caps... but you also get a much lower download/upload speed
might as well go back to dial up with unlimited data but limited to 56k speed

Canadian ISPs have had wired Internet usage caps for much longer than Netflix has been streaming into the country. It's easy to find lowered caps going back to at least 2005. It's been a money maker to charge for overages or upsell into higher cap plans.

They weren't hard caps, nobody got cut off or billed for overages. The only upsell was into higher speed tiers.

A few months ago Shaw made a huge deal about increasing the bandwidth "limit" to 125GB/mo from 100GB/mo for Xtreme service, and other increases for other tiers. When the UBB came to light, they silently dropped the limits.

I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but Netflix in Canada is fairly neutered because the CRTC has not allowed them to stream a large number of shows/movies in order to protect Bell/Shaw/Telus/Rogers.

Several years ago, Shaw and Rogers signed a non-compete agreement where Shaw would get the west and Rogers would get the east. I don't think that would be allowed to happen in the US.

Uh oh, people paying based on how much they use? People who use 1GB of bandwidth no longer subsidizing those who use 100GB. Oh the humanity!

Why do people keep saying this? Yeah grandma with net access shouldn't be subsidizing torrent leeches... BUT, this isn't about saving grandma... if the leeches have to pay more grandma will absolutely NOT pay less than she was... It's to keep your eye off the target.

Like the US Civil War that was fought over taxes without representation and turned into an issue over slavery. I have kept my history books from school and compared them to my childrens' books, during the westward expansion and California became a state under the north, the north passed a law saying no new states can come in under the south. Since the south no longer can win a vote the north can pass any law and tax they want. In my books the later years had less info on the subject, and my childrens' school books have nothing about no more states entering the south.

Did also with a little side note. You must inform your MP that you will not vote for the Conservatives(Steven Harper) in the next election. Other then election day we have no control over our politicians:mad:.

Agreed. I hope people notice my post on page three. I lsited the links for people to contact their MP, CRTC and a couple of minsters.

Comon people! If it takes 250 complaints to the CRTC to look into the banning of Money for Nothing, imagine what thousands will do regarding UBB!

I wouldn't call old-ass history textbooks a valuable guide to modern scholarship and the latest available documentation.

What you are stating is mostly nonsense. Neither the North nor the South would get states "under" them in the westward expansion. What was being decided was whether slavery would be allowed in these new territories. So it's a tautology to say that the war wasn't about slavery because it was about expansion, when the whole conflict was centered on whether slavery would be extended to the new states.

Whoever told your friend that should be fired, because it's a bold faced lie. In order to make a claim like that, such information would have to come down from a Corporate level in the form of a memo or such other things. That has not occurred.

The costs up here for cable internet are rediculous, especially with the gig caps.
35.99 gets you 15 gigs a month and poor download speeds from rogers.

shit gets worse

I signed the petition, for what it's worth. Fuck these greedy ISPs, who want us to pay more and more for shittier and shittier service. The CRTC needs to be dismantled - fuck them most of all.

I sent this to all the MP's. To make it easy put first name in To: copy paste the rest of the names into the Bcc:

This is to inform you that I have just about had it with the CRTC and their decision making process. I am forwarding the following to all my email contacts and asking them to pass this on to their friends and neighbors. They need to know that some more of what was left of some form of free enterprise is gone. I consider the internet as a utility, same as electrical, phone, water, etc. For a government to allow three large corporations to control all the media that flows into peoples homes is outrages. Where is the competition when shaw has a monopoly into my house. I thought the The Competition Bureau of Canada would have stepped in by now if the CRTC isn't going to protect consumers. Unless their funding has been cut to the bone, at a time when people are using more and more bandwidth for services. Just a reminder that taxpayers funded much of the cable and fiber lines. Wasn't it just recently that our Conservative government gave out billions to the cable industry to help connect all Canadians in rural Canada to the Internet because all Canadians should have access. Now you allow the Foxes to look after the Chicken Coop.

Stop The Meter On Your Internet Use

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are about to impose usage-based billing on YOU.

This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay MUCH more for less Internet. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

These Big Telecom companies are forcing small competing ISPs to adopt the same pricing scheme, so that we have no choice but to pay these punitive fees.

This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

We urgently need to send a clear message to Ottawa, saying that we won't stand by while some of the most profitable companies in the country indiscriminately add new fees to our Internet bills. Enough is enough.

UPDATE: The CRTC just made a decision that paves the way for new internet fees to be added to your bill. To stop this we need to raise our voices now more than ever.

Added by.... . This is not a joke. These Cable companies already censor our connections, so if they don’t like where you go and download they slow your connection speed by THROTTLING(old terminology) or as they now call it, Line Management. Please pass this on to all your email friends and acquaintances.

Phone or email or write to your mp and tell them you will be voting for some other party but not the Conservatives (Steven Harper). They will only listen if you tell them your not going to vote for them.

Respectfully Yours

subject Usage-Based Billing

The best way you could stick it to the government is to cancel your internet. Imagine millions flicking off the switch? But the question is, could YOU handle it?

The problem with this reasoning, and I suspect something that is being missed, is that the infrastructure for ISPs are not entirely privately funded. There is a mix of public funding and public land use that the ISP take advantage of. As such there should be certain obligations to public interest in this regard that the government should be looking after.

Canada is at the bottom end of reasonable internet access worldwide. Putting a meter and therefore working to increase these costs to consumers is just wrong. Though that is my subjective opinion, the corporations controlling internet access in Canada would beg to differ. I guess this goes hand-in-hand with the exorbitantly high cost of monthly cell phone plans here also. Extra tax on blank disc media...etc...

Nice letter there Uncle, think I'll use it and pass it on too!

Y.

This is the Netflix effect. Netflix use is bringing down their infrastructure. This way of slamming the hand down on the table was inevitable.

wrong

nextflix cuts into the TV services offered by those same large ISP's, so now we either watch and pay for cable TV, or pay for the bandwitdh for netflix

same idea with phone and skype, these large ISPs offter Internet/Phone/TV through cable or phone lines, but when the phone and TV business tanks thanks to better pricing with broadband services(netflix/skype), they just charge more for broadband to counter

Same reason CRTC has Hulu blocked for Canada

conflict of interest IMO

Remember that these third party companies do not own, maintain or expand their lines. They buy the service and bandwidth from the owners of those lines.

The main players are and are all SEPERATE companies:

Whether it's right or wrong, it's up to us Canadians to speak up and tell the right people in the government (like in the digitalhome posting) what we think.

Rogers=Shaw=Cogeco
Bell=Telus

same companies under different names based on what cost they've agreed to service they all share the same infrastructure

FWIW, I also signed and emailed my local MP, who emailed me back pretty quickly. He seemed to support the CRTC ruling. I should point out he is a PC and yes I told him to tell his boss Steve not to expect a vote over this and that HST thing...

Id be impressed if even 10% of the local MP's understand what they are agreeing with or suppoting

Well... one good thing may come of this: heavily compressed data. Will make properly IDing quasi-legal content just short of impossible, especially is streamed/error corrected :p

Over five years ago I had this broadband provider called Delta cable who had a download cap of 10 GB per month. When I made a complaint about it to them the douche on the line claimed that was a "generous" amount. I was outraged but had no choice because it was a remote area and my only other choice was dial-up service. These corporate scum are really starting to get on my tits, it's a douchebag world run by douchebags to profit douchebags.

Whoever told your friend that should be fired, because it's a bold faced lie. In order to make a claim like that, such information would have to come down from a Corporate level in the form of a memo or such other things. That has not occurred.

You're a SHAW employee? I dumped them a while back and went to Telus because they offered me a much better price but they are losers just like SHAW so am not happy with them either. Finding a good provider is just not going to happen so we choose our poison and deal with it, one way or another.

Id be impressed if even 10% of the local MP's understand what they are agreeing with or suppoting

It doesn't matter. They do understand "I will not vote for you or the party if you don't change what you don't understand."

*sighs* It's not even just the PC. It's the bloody Liberals/NDP as well. None of them care or likely even understand what the bloody heck is going on. The formation of the CRTC was ridiculous from the start when many of the high ranking officials in the CRTC are former Bell employees. Conflict of interest much?

As a side note the MP's are responding but they ask for your full name and address. Most probably to eliminate the possibility of a bot sending the emails. Some MP's won't respond without full name and address.

For your own good make this your own election issue. Take the time and send an email of your displeasure. Lots to lose and everything to gain.

I do hope someday internet over power, or satalite is reliable and fast..and affordable

the day we can get away from Phone lines or Cable lines in the house is the day both Rogers and Bell DIAF...they rely on us requiring one or the other so until then were are alway at the mecry of these tards. an unlimited broadband package that is unrestricted and non filtered, throttled @ 200$ /month is better thn what Bell/Rogers want for a Homephone/HD TV/Internet plus usage fees IMO

i think my bill with Rogers for example is ~ 210$/month for HD TV (only a few channels, infact 3 i want but i am forced to buy the package) and Internet... i dont even have home phone

While in one of the very very few non-shaw/rogers towns (we have compton here) ... I can get 15M/1.5M unlimited, with static IP, phone, and HDTV for 140, and that's even at business rates since I need to run servers from home.... The big 3 can just go fark themselves.

Unfortunatly even in a town of 1000 people all my services are bell, rogers or someone reselling those same services, which is the norm for most of Ontario i think

wonder how long till CRTC err Bell/Rogers/Cogeco fix the independant people not using their services.

As a side note the MP's are responding but they ask for your full name and address. Most probably to eliminate the possibility of a bot sending the emails. Some MP's won't respond without full name and address.

Yea, I sent an email to an MP regarding a complaint about Medical Services of BC harassing me with automated collection calls for unpaid bills when I owed them nothing. He complained to me that my email had a fake name. Yea, well, smart people never use their real name in their Hotmail accounts. Doh! Turns out in the end they were harassing me with calls that were for someone else I didn't even know and of course I had to waste my time and phone their call center to sort it out so they would stop phoning me three times a week.

Oh I'm not thrilled with the other guys either lately, but it was just easier to tag the HST issue as another reason since he was a PC'er :)

It's those losers at the CRTC who are to blame for Telus giving my personal info to a scamming 3rd party telco. The idiots mandated that the major Telcos must give the 3rd party telcos our contact info if they require it to send a collection notice for a bill. I got one of those automated collect call scams and had the charge removed from my Telus bill. Thought that was the end of it until just a few days ago I received a collection notice with threats of damaging my credit rating if I don't pay $20.00 for a 3 minute long distance collect call I never accepted. The legal term for that is called extortion. The CRTC is to blame for this and I am now in the process of taking them to task for it.

Actually the NDP is the only party I believe that does speak out on these technological issues, they've actually called out the CRTC several times before, which is really why I've been voting for them just to get that voice in there.

well do something about it

thats right people seem to be cowardly do nothings these days and thats why crap like this is happening more and more on a global level, You honestly think voting the other guy in is the answer because i can tell you its nothing but good cop / bad cop. Its not the core systems or the value your country upholds, its the individuals who bent in twisted it into what it is today and thats all that needs to change

Interesting that on the online form for registering Internet complaints with the CRTC, they actually mention themselves "The CRTC does not regulate the rates, quality of service or business practices for Internet service providers. So we can’t pursue complaints about these services for you.

I don't have a problem with usage based billing. Gas prices are high up here and I pay them without bitching.

I pay a flat fee per month for subscription and maintenance to my house connection and modem. No issue there.

I get charged a flat REASONABLE rate per GB after that. Let's say $0.25 per GB. So on those months when I'm away on vacation and not using my internet I don't pay much, just money for maintenance and service.

On those heavy downloading months I get charged more. On those off months where I don't use it much, charge me a helluva lot less. No issue with that.

What's being proposed here is "putting lipstick on a pig" of what the Canadian utilities would term "excessive bandwidth" use BS just to squeeze more money out of the strapped Canadian consumer who's already heading to credit crunch overleveraging doom, and who's tax dollars have, and will continue to pay indirectly for these companies' greed.

Whatever. You want your cost-of-business to go down, give upper management a pay cut.

It doesn't cost them $30.00 or more to bring internet to my house especially if it's on pre-existing infrastructure made to carry phone or cable TV signal, so don't charge me an arm and a leg on top of that for superfluous reasons.

I'll be e-mailing my MP, MPP, Prime Minister and everyone else.
