Sweet! - PPKA.

Too bad we got kicked off campus :D.. Better for my studies anyway; ended up getting my Masters.

Sig Ep @ UCF ;)

No way, my best buddy is in Sig Ep at UCI. He's a senior, way up near the top. He's hosts their spring and summer retreat's as well.

Back on subject.. Gonna try to get alot done this week-

Here's what I have started on tonight..

The band saw is so damn cool- if you are into woodworking and have an extra 3 or 4 hundred bucks, I highly recommend you getting yo-self one.

Jonathan's trick of the day:

If you know you are going to have some pieces right next to eachother, make a rough cut to get them close, and then cut all of them together to make them the same. That's where those U's came from..

PICT8328.jpg

PICT8329.jpg

As an engineer, the knot in that board makes me cry; but oh well- there are 3 boards in the joint, so it won't crash and burn; at worst it will crack. And as a practical matter, knot-free perfect wood gets very expensive.

Speaker stand- fits perfectly beside the curve of the TV.. [WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR]Only possible with a band saw.. [/WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR] I'll be covering the edge of that piece with either actual veneer, or re-cut it out of a piece of true oak.

PICT8330.jpg

Also another little trick- I cut a bunch of standard blocks at specific lengths for spacers during assembly. Each one is labeled so I just grab a couple of the height I want- i.e. 6" in this case; if it was a bigger shelf, I'd use 3 of them. So all you have to do is get the bottom-most piece level, and everything else will be.

Basically there is a wheel on top, and a wheel on bottom, and a band of serrated steel rolls between them..

The blade is made out of high-quality steel, so it tracks true, and you can make fairly sharp radius cuts with it. They make different bands for different purposes.

Out of curiousity, where did you buy your wood?

-Nebruin

Home Depot and Lowes- depends on whether I'm stopping on the way home from work (Lowes) or going from my house (HD)

Lowes has a better selection.

Note: I have kidnapped the bandsaw. It shall be returned to you, unharmed, provided you transfer $1000 US into my paypal account... j/k

Seriously, though, Delta makes some of the best damn saws/shop utensils on the market. From one woodworker to another, nice stuff!

heh- you damn fast! I was standing next to it 23 seconds ago! :D

I've actually been uber suprized by the quality and bad-assness of my Rigid Miter Saw. That thing rocks!

Don't get me wrong- the Delta Bandsaw is pro-grade; that's why I bought it.

Here is the wall that I have been working on..

The question is do I install the hardwood backboard like I did on the other side, or do I leave the drywall exposed?

I'm not sure about the wood on the back. That may depend on what you do with the top. So maybe put the top on and ask us again! ;)

I did register to say that you're doing great work and you're inspiring me to go out and get started on a few projects myself.

Geek out

Wood on back = yes

It'll look strange if that's the only place where the wall is showing through. Besides, it would be so much nicer. You're obviously putting a whole hell of a lot of work into this, might as well throw on the back panel too.

I agree by far, might look odd if you dont make it all the same!!

Nice job on the desk. Hope it all works out for you at the end. All I can say its going to be one hell of a desk when its done!!!!

I'm pissed.. was going to do recessed lighting in the overhangs- well, I'm off by about an inch with the cans- so no can do.. argh..

holy hell, how much is your power bill? When i lived with my mom (injury related, not because I wanted to) I had like 4 computers running and when i left, she told me her bill went down $50.... i cant imagine what your bill would be with all that stuff. Assuming you have enough stuff to load it down i mean.

I have a nuclear reactor in the garage. Built it myself. Power is not a problem.

sry i am asking so many questions

Google it.

Most people have one in their garage :p

Love the work mate, proper top craftmanship.

Cant wait for the final product.

how much you pay for uranium? or plutonium?

or is this a fusion reactor?

edit: nice desk

Now THAT would be a [H]ard|ware project!! I think you'd get more hits than porn sites if you detailed how to build your own nuclear reactor in your garage. Plus you'd glow in the dark, so that would be a plus as well.

nope- just me, myself and I. Well, tonight my Dad came over and helped me cut the big piece on my bandsaw- cooked him a burger for the help :D It was an expensive piece of wood, wanted an extra set of hands.

But for the most part, I've done absolutely everything. That's why it's taking so long..

Looking at the pics of your old desk made me wonder what kind of finish you are putting on this new desk when you are done. Personally, I love the lighter shades of wood. I've never been a fan of dark stained oak, or anything similar. Now, I don't mind Cherry for moulding, trim, etc... but that much dark wood for a desk or entertainment center is too much. I love how the desk looks now with the unfinished wood, maybe you could use a very light stain?

I love what you have done so far, very beautiful wood work. I'm in college now, so I don't have any woodworking tools or anything, but once I get settled and moved in after college I definitley plan on stocking up. Your desk has been an inspiration, keep up the great work! :D

I'm a darker/red oak stain kinda guy.

Will be doing it like my medicine cabinet..

dear god I cant wait till this is done. Do you have room to take some pics of it from a wider angle? I feel teased for some reason, all these close ups and i cant really get a full mental picture. :)
