Just google for fiber-optic lighting. The technology has been around for a long time, and they tend to use Halogen light sources for the intense central light. Of course, now that LEDs are increasing in strength and capability, there are systems out there that are LED-driven too. (Some pretty spiffy RGB systems, too).

Fiber can be had in a few varieties with the two major ones being sidelight and endlight. Sidelight fiber emits light omnidirectionally from its sides; they contain minor imperfections designed to scatter light instead of to retain it. Endlight fibers are near-perfect and contain no imperfections, allowing the light to bounce its way along inside the fiber until it comes out the end.

You could trim the whole desk in sidelight fiber and hook it up to an RGB LED driver and be able to accent your desk in any color you can imagine. :D
 
Crikies. You have the grain going Vertical on the big doors and horizontal on the small.

The staing looks good. Did you mention what wood this was.

wow, i cant wait till i grow up and get my own house lol, if i ever build a house, i would use nothing but that lighting, thats insane. I bet it uses a LOT less power and lasts a LOT longer :) but thats just a guess

I'm not that picky.. It'll be stained dark enough where it won't be all that noticable, and it was a helluva lot easier putting it together with one sheet for the back.

Strength is not everything; stiffness, i.e. deflections are a big issue with any material you use. And I don't want cracks in my finish like on my other desk for one. Another reason is I am countersinking all of the screws and bolts- well, if you countersink 1/4" into 1/2" material you will have the fasteners pull thru- especially with the small finish screws I am using.

[edit] Why the 1/4" countersink? if a countersink is too shallow, the wood filler does not have enough wood to grab onto and can fall out. Hell- that doesn't make sense! It'll just stick to the screw! Well- no, it won't. What happens is a pocket of air gets trapped (no matter how small) in the socket, and very few things stick to coated screws anyway. So what you rely on is the wood grain on the sides of the hole to retain the filler once it hardens. (analogy to piles in foundations: you have two different effects- end bearing and skin friction. The end of the pile doesn't stick to the dirt or rock, so only skin friction is considered when the pile has uplift, or tension. So long story short, be sure to countersink your holes enough for the wood filler to grab the side of the hole. :D (engineer for ya')[/edit]

Another reason, I'm putting a fascia on all plywood edges, so if I use anything less than 3/4" ply, I'll either get splitting along the plywood planes, or I'll miss the plywood when screwing into it.

Finally, especially when building it, I'm walking all over the thing and I have a bunch of overhangs (cantilevers), so I don't want to step on a corner, break it off or crack it, and have to go three steps backwards to replace it.

As for the framing, I'm using 2x material to avoid splitting with the large bolts, or fasteners in general for that matter. I'm sure some of you have screwed a screw into a 1x4 and had it split right down the middle. Again, I'm walking all over the thing and don't want splits or collapse during construction.

I'm using the large bolts as I said before to be able to have a large enough face on the bolt to where I can either with a hammer or wood filler, lodge it in place in a blind hole and keep it from spinning (and then cover it with an oak veneer). Analogy is try to turn a coke can in your hand versus a pencil; it's alot easier to hold the coke can still.

And finally, I'm using douglas fir and pine for the frame; plywood with an oak veneer for the large surfaces, and oak hardwood for the finished surfaces.

or you could have read the thread and found out that it's being beuilt precisely to be able to be taken out of the room it's in. he's building it in modules that can be easily unbolted.
 
Very nice work. I like how you have allotted space for hot air to leave via fans on the underside. That's my kind of feature!

I have a couple rack mounted APC units here at work for my remote closets.. They have been going strong. Of course, for the main computer room, I have a 21 KVa Best Power unit. That thing has 10 car battery sized batteries in it.

So I am thinking some simple shelves above my monitors and desk.. Trying to get creative.. I am really liking the light overhang/canopy thing, so I think I am going to do that over my desk with some lights etc. But I don't want it as imposing, I want it to appear light and efficient.

So I am playing around with something like this:

It's coming along great. Keep us posted through the Easter weekend. I love large scale wood work projects. I have seen those clamps before. Which ones are they? The ones with trigger squeese adjustment.

The second one is a Morris Chair and they are VERY VERY comfortable! I know, because I have some that I built. I built them because the ones I found in stores were not sized right for me. So I made a big one. The one in my TV room has a cup indentation that I routered into the chair arms towards the end, holds a pop can perfect. I really need to get a camera. :(
