Both versions of MGS V coming to Steam.

I'm having an absolute blast with this game. What's the likelihood of there's being a follow up game built on the same engine (or updated) with game play style?

I haven't played a Metal gear game since MGS on PS1. The cut-scene heavy nature of the previous games kept me away but I'm really enjoying what we got here.

I got a sinking feeling Konami, being as shitty as they are, aren't too concerned with making another one of these games. Especially with Hideo Kojima out of the picture would it even be worth it?

If it does well Konami might make more....but with Kojima gone they'd probably be a shell of what they really are.

how does this compare to GZ? I mean I got that game, played the first mission, then saw that ther others all revolve around doing shit at the same base. Like WTF?

It's an open world, you might have some ops that take place at a base you've been to before but a lot of them (especially main missions) will take you around the map to different locations.

Some missions even have a chain of events/areas that you progress through for that mission and how you do it is up to you.

Yeah that was just ground zero's... It was a prequel to phantom pains story and a demo of the game, that is why it only had 1 real mission in it, albeit being able to replay that mission in different ways.

Phantom pain is much different, there is a whole open world you can choose to explore and countless missions that take place on different locations on 2 continents, so don't worry. Think of GZ as a demo, that's all it was really.

how many areas are in the game?...I'm still in Afghanistan...

Afghanistan and Africa. I just unlocked the first mission of the African campaign and I'm over 25 hours into the game. I haven't been rushing by any means though, and I've done all the side ops I've unlocked up till now.

I have to mention again that I really really like this game! Being a huge MGS fan since MGS1 on PS..... I may be biased toward any MG game but this one is just really freaking good. I love the side RPG/base building/staff management system. Sending off troops on success rate probability missions to gather GMP and supplies is great and adds to the "boss" feel. It really makes you want to build up your guys and find specialists and high ranking soldiers to use.

One thing I will say is that I doubt this game's story will end up being as great as MGS4's story was. MGS4 had such a great wrap up ending and tied everything together super well as well as really invoking an emotional response. I don't see this one doing that, but I would love to be proven wrong. I am definitely liking the story so far, I just don't know if it will meet MGS4's "epicness."

For those of us who did not own a PS3 it would be great if they remaster MGS4 using the Fox engine.

and game is much much harder if you go full stealth
you are just going easy way

my intentions is to go full stealth, but sometimes i get noticed and at that point I go loud.

I guess I can restart checkpoint when that happens, but at that point it like I don't want to fail so may as well go full loud and finish the mission. I think it should be much harder in loud in order to encourage stealth even if you get noticed

the game encourages stealth but only in terms of mission scores...I agree that they should have found a way to force more people to use it...I wonder how many people just go in guns blazing...if you play Phantom Pain as a straight first person shooter it's way too easy...for one mission I didn't have the right weapons (missles) to destroy a few tanks so all I did was call in an air strike and that made it even easier...the unlimited supply drops, air strikes etc all make the game too easy when not using stealth

i just go into mission with bare minimum equipment and no buddy (ddog and quiet makes shit way too easy)
you have to pay attention all the time and listen carefully to sound

that's where your stealth skill and fluton comes into play :p

I can't find the option anywhere?

I just found a HUGE retcon in the Medical Bay. HUGE.
MASSIVE spoiler, so I'm not even gonna say, just run around till you find an open door.

I have a couple questions:

1.) I downloaded the game first on my dual-core laptop, then copied the game to my quad-core desktop. Is there a chance the game installs a slightly different version depending on how many cores you have? Probably a dumb question.

2.) Assuming problem #1 isn't my issue, which setting should I lower to reduce CPU load? I currently have Texture filtering, Textures, SSAO, and Model detail set to Extra High, everything else set to high (motion blur at medium though). I noticed that dropping Lighting from Ex High to High helped keep me 60 more often, but I still get drops. Sucks because I usually try to keep Lighting as high as possible in all my games. Wondering what to drop next, maybe shadows another notch or is that more of a GPU thing?

I have a core i5 3470 I upgraded to from a Core 2 Quad Q9650. I got a major jump in performance, regularly dropped into the 30's on the C2Q but only occasionally drop into the mid 50's on my i5. So it definitely uses quite a bit of CPU, contrary to what a lot of people are saying.

I just completed the mission where I meet 'Quiet'...looks like no matter where you are in the Main Mission you'll automatically jump to Mission 11 once you explore a certain area...I was doing a Side-Ops and got bumped out of it to start Mission 11

the game really is amazing...even as a person who never played any of the previous MGS games this is really a fantastic game...the story makes sense in a self contained way...people like the Man on Fire, Skull Face etc can be enjoyed based on Phantom Pain alone...the graphics are excellent- the lighting in particular...textures and character models are also really impressive...Quiet looks almost photo-realistic

Yeah she does. They modeled her face from the game actress who plays her, a Dutch girl I think. Her face is the same.... Body not so much, but still not bad :)

I'm in the beginning of the Africa campaign now and the mission where you extract the prisoner and Afrikaans translator was great. Took me an entire hour to beat as I deployed at the wrong time (won't spoil anything more) and after gathering Intel I used the phantom cigar to speed up time and wait. Seeing the whole encampment go from day to night/night to day (it's one of those, trying not to spoil anything) was great.

Anyways the only thing I wish there was more of is bigger indoor environments. They did everything great but I think throwing in a few large interior structures to infiltrate would have mixed things up a bit in a great way.

yeah I kind of miss the kind of large sprawling bases you'd find yourself in like in MGS1 and 2.

Most bases seem to have a lot of copy+paste buildings and interiors for many things.

Yeah that is true. Also looking at certain textures you can tell there are some low res ones. I figure they must have to cut corners some where to get such a sprawling environment, super far draw distance, and virtually no load times...

After having 30 hours into the game so far I feel confident that I would give it a 9 or a 9.5/10.... For being a MG fan it would be probably 10... Hah, but realistically speaking if it had more indoor areas like i mentioned I think I'd definitely say 10/10 easily for a stealth/action game. The small but worthy RPG base/army management is a big plus too, it adds something new that is fun to play around with, definitely helps you feel more like a super mercenary leader that way ;)

Just found that. Thanks for the heads up, that was crazy

I'm beginning to appreciate D-Horse a lot more now. With how spread out the side-ops are and each deployment costing me between 30,000-40,000GMP, D-Horse is awesome for cutting across the map while being more manueverable and discrete than the jeep.

The double-barrel shotgun with the barrel extension mod is also sexy as hell and has replaced my assault rifle full-time.

use cardbox fast travel

I know how to use the cardboard box on motherbase to get around, but none of the bases I see have those, at least none marked on my map or anything.

I guess maybe it's for loading purposes or whatever, but the Mother Base platforms being so far from each other is fairly annoying. I guess there are quick ways to get there but why have it be insanely spread out in the first place?

Also, the "open world" is a bit of a misnomer...you are basically forced to ride along roads for the most part, can't get up onto cliffs that look like they should be accessible due to invisible walls. Kind of annoying.

that's something I really like...you don't see that anymore in games where everything on your Base is spread out over far distances...the bridges connecting each platform are really long...as far as weapons I find changing them out based on higher damage/reload/recoil features don't really matter- the thing that really matters is having a suppressor on your main weapons and then upgrading those...the things I develop are grenades, I-Droid, Fulton balloons, night vision etc...the textures on the canyon walls are really impressive for the most part but there are other areas where the textures aren't so good but overall they are excellent

Help me understand this. I basically killed everyone in the base where Kaz is in the first mission. Then I died maybe 3-4 times due to the special soldiers that show up. Then finally, I ran on my horse and hit the LZ. So it took maybe about 53 minutes and I get a B rank with a Chicken moniker. Dafuq!

What caused this drop in mission points. Also the AI is really stupid when you go Rambo. I basically stood behind a wall and let them come to my location and kept on knocking them out and killing them. lol.

I also hate the horse riding and the fact I have to adjust camera, press X and also keep moving my L thumbstick for direction. Was a pain in the ass with those special soldiers chasing me.

Still getting the hang of it but it did not grab me away from Witcher 3. I am still spending tons more time on Witcher 3 and Mad Max than this game. Also stealth is really not my forte. I remember playing the original splinter cell pretty much Rambo style as well and I am thinking this won't be any different. Will stealth only when my patience meter is not full.

you lose points when you die and when you kill people...you gain bonus points for things like not triggering any alarms, not using Reflex Mode etc...and the faster you complete the objective and extract, the more points you get

I see. Well I guess I will be a B rated Chicken for all missions. Stealth is so slow in this game to be honest. Killing is so easy. :p
Another stupid question, how do I know which one is story mission and which one is just an op?

Codenames: http://www.dtgre.com/2015/09/mgs-5-phantom-pain-unlock-activate-all.html

A "chick" = did not complete Mission 06 within 3 missions of Mission 03

A "chicken" = did you use the chicken hat

This information is in the Encyclopedia or something. It's not easy to get to, and honestly the menu system within iDroid is not that great (why can you do customization only within the ACC for example).

And to be honest I wouldn't worry about mission scores - you get to re-do them later anyway, with better loadouts and the secondary objectives unlocked instead of "???." That's not to say it isn't awesome when you do things like take out the base comms and find out it was an objective.

Unplug the controller?

I think there's a bug where even if you don't have the controller plugged in, it will show you controller prompts.

I've had that issue with the last 3 PC games I played with a game pad. Sometimes the prompts that show up show as a KB/M and sometimes as Xbox pad. Happened with Arkham asylum/city and zombi. Might just be a windows bug.

I played a lot this weekend. I last played Mission 9: Backup, Back Down where you have to destroy enemy tanks and vehicles. I captured every single one using the Fulton and D-Horse. OMG it was hillarious. All I did was put D-Horse in the road, run to the side and lay down, when the armored vehicle stopped to get D-Horse to move I popped up and Fultoned them. I even got the prisoner. At the end the Russians sent 3 tanks to get me apparently since I was so successful - so I Fultoned them too! Since I Fultoned the vehicles whole I got the crews all as recruited - I could not stop laughing - best mission ever (so far) and I go so much armor and A rated guys...even got an S rating on the mission. The only downside was the 10K it cost to Fulton each vehicle.

I had no idea about the boxes thing until I read about it online - does it ever explain it in the game?

I am at like mission 12 or something and never heard about this or was told without reading online about it.

The thing that bugs me is that when you're doing side-ops it'd be nice to just use the helicopter to go from one area to the others without going to the ACC every time.

It would be preferrable to be able to get a Heli lift from Points A to B I agree. Not sure why they couldn't do that.
