Black Myth: Wu Kong

So I read this was supposed to be a day one release when it comes to Xbox with game pass. I known it was delayed for “optimization” on Xbox. If true I think I’ll hold out and play on game pass on pc when it drops.

##edit##
Looks like there’s MANY reports this was a game pass day one on pc release and was removed about 4 months ago. No one seems to have proof with a screenshot, but there are multiple threads saying the same thing.

Either way I’ll wait for a sale I think. Looks good tho.

It was never announced as a day 1 Game Pass release. You're probably confusing this game with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which was a day 1 GP release. The developer wants to release a Series X|S version, but they said that they're having issues getting it running on the Series S, and Microsoft won't allow games to be released on the console unless it runs on both versions. Larian ran into similar issues with BG3.

I like how they make the monkey look whiter than he actually is:

The shrines and some of the bosses make it feel like a soulsborne lite but the level design isn't as complex and the regular enemies are significantly easier and more fun to farm when you need a boost. The fact that you can redistribute your stat points at any shrine as often as you'd like also makes it easier and more fun to experiment with builds.

Man, there are actually many ugly low textures visible, especially noticeable in chapter 3. Why does that even exist? Is this a bug or intentional?

Could be all wrong (do not know anything about China dev scene), but it coud be a small studio doing a small budget game, it is the first game they made that as a wikipedia page I think.

In 2020, it was a 30 dev team, so not that small for certain type of game but for something like this that people end up comparing to AAA release it was.

A CD project had like 1200 employee when Cyberpunk released, they do a lot of not video game stuff on the side but that can give some idea. For the world size and variation it could easily became a bit of with X budget you have to balance between character quality, world or texture.

High quality asset could be one of the most labor intensive part of game making

That makes sense. Thanks.

I've noticed texture resolution pop in, if that makes sense. I'd rather not see that but for the most part it hasn't bothered me all that much, it's fast paced and generally looks damn good to me. Just got into chapter 5 a bit last night and will probably have it beaten by the end of the week, likely long before any performance patches, no regerts, having an absolute ball.

I'm finding the atmosphere and boss design just absolutely incredible. My favorite boss so far has been The Duskveil, SO EPIC. Had a rough go with the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master, then I went back to clean some stuff up, got the Weaver's Needle Vessel, and beat him the first try with that the next day (well also with the Golden Loong Staff, probably didn't hurt matters). Seems like there's a Vessel you can get for each chapter end boss that significantly helps with the fight, wish I knew that for the Yellow Wind Sage, dude rocked me for far too long.

All I hope for now is some extras to look forward to in NG+, ideally the ability to upgrade staffs. My favorite so far has been the Kang-Jin staff, but since I can't upgrade it I've mostly been using the staffs with the most damage and adjusting my build around them, which has actually been kind of fun too but still.

Seems like almost every game is a Sony exclusive these days. Thinking at this point market share has shifted enough that taking some more from Sony might be equal to whatever they would get from Xbox copy sales. Tumbles downhill from here.

Sony has better exclusives for sure but frankly I’m not in love with any of em, I say fuck em both. I’d rather see the tables turned with the best titles being available on PC only, their inclusion only lessens our experience anyway.

the only good Xbox (PC) exclusive in recent years looks like STALKER 2...the Gears of War series was also pretty decent at least in terms of graphics

This game is good, but too tough for someone like myself who can’t react quickly, and also doesn’t have a lot of time to spend playing and learning. I wish I could spend days with this, but I have a full time job and about five thousands games to play and movies and tv shows to watch - not to mention I’m trying to write a novel. LOL.

You realize almost everyone here has, at the very least, a full time job, right? What does that have to do with anything?

As I said… I suck at games like this… and for me, personally, to be able to play this well, it would require me spending days and days trying to learn the mechanics.

I have a full time job, and I also have many other games to play, which prevents me from being able to spend days and days with any one game.

And yes I’m aware that most people here work full time. I said nothing about anyone here not having a job.

There something for a game to come with a single way to play it, like a chef at a restaurant too. Specially for game that are not specially movie-story like, that all about the gameplay.

A bit like enabling cheat can spoil a game (even if you go back trying to play without them after), easier difficulty could, same goes for internet with the answer existing for the Gabriel Knight type game, yes you can simply not check, but the fact that you could make it less special to find the solution, I could have just check.

Nintendo game when we were young, rarely had any difficulty setting. It let creator obviously and by definition only optimize a single set of experience (for some game that less of an issue, but something like this seem like it would benefit) but also the player mind is beating the game without any what if about it.

I got you

If you want to play it but aren't because of the boss difficulty look into a trainer. If you can increase your defense or lower their damage output it would make it much more approachable without, I believe, affecting the enjoyment of the game. The normal enemies are much, much easier than a typical souls like.

There is no exclusivity deal.

The MSM is using the unknown "knowledgeable source" to get clicks.

the FAQ doesn't mean there's no exclusivity deal...they just aren't saying it outright...saying the Xbox version is delayed for quality reasons is what they've been saying for awhile now but watch it just so happens to be the exact amount of time as any exclusivity period would be- 3 months, 6 months...they obviously don't want to come right out and say it

Show me a game that had a console exclusivity deal where they were not public about it.

a lot of (most?) exclusives don't say when the exclusivity period is over...that Final Fantasy game as a recent example (I forget which part- XVI or XVII etc)...Grand Theft Auto 6...did Deathloop reveal exactly when it would be available on PS5 at launch?

It's a lot more valuable to Sony if pat of their timed exclusivity deal is not revealing when it ends.

The question was about whether or not they were hiding an exclusivity agreement, not when it would end. Developers and publishers are almost always upfront when asked.

XVI was shown to be a console exclusive in a Game Informer article a month before release date (can't link to Game Informer article anymore since they just shut down).

https://www.vgchartz.com/article/45...ins-why-final-fantasy-xvi-is-a-ps5-exclusive/

Deathloop was announced as a PlayStation exclusive at least two months in advance, and they said it would be for a year. It was released on Xbox consoles exactly one year later, as promised.

Take Two have already implied that PC will come later for GTA 6. Zelnick said they have a "platform strategy" that works, which everyone knows what that means.

https://www.ign.com/articles/is-gta-6-coming-to-pc-take-two-boss-has-a-coy-response

Their recent financials showing their targeted release calendar excludes PC from the list of platforms.

Given that history I would tend to believe the word of the developer, not some anonymous source.

the developer has not explicitly stated that there is no exclusivity period...they are being vague talking about Xbox issues that need to be fixed...that could be the case but it also could be that there is an exclusivity period...let's see how long this 'optimization' takes...if it ends up being 3 or 6 months then I would say it was an exclusivity period...if the Xbox version comes out in the next few weeks then it really was technical issues

Jeff Grubb says he spoke to one of his sources and they told him there's no PS5 console exclusivity deal in place for Black Myth Wukong...so looks like it's leaning that way

Beat the game today and immediately started tearing through ng+, such an awesome ride.

Final boss gave me trouble until I switched to spellbinder, took him out first try with it and will probably keep it for this entire run.

Saw the mountain secret boss (hopefully vague enough to not be a spoiler) from someone who played it and what a bananas fight. Certainly ramped up the difficulty on a handful of bosses, which I know some appreciated the more Souls-y challenge of.

The one you get to from the Pagoda Shrine? I just completed that one and yeah it was wild.

NG+ is definitely easy mode. I’m mostly speed running to get materials to craft weapons and armor and cleared all the way through chapter 5 without really dying.

Definitely going to 100% this one on Steam, it’s my favorite souls-like next to Lies of P, can’t decide which I like better.

The Series S may have been a real issue in making something presentable for this game. Rich talks about this on the latest Digital Foundary. While the lack of vram can be an issue, it seems to be a lack of bandwidth in particular is the real issue, at least for this game. Here is a screenshot comparing an RX 6700 (~PS5/Series X) running 4k high and an RX 5500XT (~Series S) running 1080p medium, both using resolution scaling.

Given only 2GB seperate these cards, that is a massive performance difference when factoring in the settings.

Why don't you get a trainer to get past the hardest parts. Will at least allow you to experience the full game.

It won't take another six years for the next chapter in what's planned to be a series based on Chinese mythology — though that won't be a sequel...Game Science is working on an expansion to Wukong, which will give it a chance to monetize the game a second time...2022's Elden Ring, a title with similar play style and design, has shown how the release of an expansion — this year's Shadow of the Erdtree — can spur a fresh flurry of sales for the original...
